The Distance Between Two Hearts

Chapter 4

The Distance Between Two Hearts

THE LAST SUNSET WE SHARED · August 6, 2026

Three weeks.

That was all the time Adrian Blake had left in Silver Bay.

Twenty-one days before he had to return to the city and begin his next journey.

A journey that could take him across the world for years.

Before coming back to Silver Bay, Adrian believed leaving was easy.

He had done it before.

He had packed his bags.

He had closed doors.

He had convinced himself that moving forward meant never looking back.

But now everything was different.

Because this time…

Someone was waiting for him to stay.

The days after discovering Nathan Harper’s letters felt strangely peaceful.

Adrian and Lily began spending more time together.

Not like strangers.

Not like two people trying to repair a broken past.

But like two old friends slowly discovering each other again.

Every morning, Adrian helped Lily restore Harper House.

They painted walls.

Repaired old furniture.

Cleaned forgotten rooms.

And sometimes…

They simply sat together and talked.

About everything.

And about nothing.

“You still hate tomatoes.”

Lily laughed as she watched Adrian remove them from his sandwich.

“I don’t hate them.”

“You just remove them every time.”

“That’s different.”

“How?”

“I dislike their existence.”

She laughed.

The sound made Adrian stop for a moment.

He had missed that.

Not the sound itself.

The feeling it created.

The feeling that life was lighter.

Lily was different from the girl he remembered.

The seventeen-year-old Lily had been full of dreams.

The adult Lily carried responsibilities.

She had become stronger.

But Adrian noticed something.

She still painted the same way.

With emotion.

With honesty.

With her whole heart.

One afternoon, he found her sitting in the art room, painting near the window.

The sunlight touched her face.

For a moment, she looked exactly like the girl from his memories.

“You always watch people when they create.”

Lily didn’t look up.

Adrian smiled.

“You noticed?”

“I noticed everything about you.”

The words came naturally.

But after he said them, the room became quiet.

Lily slowly looked at him.

“Everything?”

He nodded.

“The way you tap your fingers when you’re thinking.”

“The way you look at the sky before answering difficult questions.”

“The way you pretend you’re not tired because you don’t want others to worry.”

Lily stared at him.

“Adrian…”

He smiled softly.

“I told you.”

“I remember everything.”

That evening, they walked along the beach.

The same place where they had made their promise years ago.

The sunset painted the sky orange.

Lily removed her shoes and walked barefoot through the sand.

“You know what I missed most?”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“This.”

“The ocean?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She smiled.

“Feeling like I didn’t have to pretend.”

The words stayed with him.

Because Adrian understood.

He had spent years pretending too.

They reached the old pier.

Lily leaned against the wooden railing.

“Do you ever wonder what would have happened if you never left?”

Adrian looked at the waves.

“Every day.”

“What do you think?”

He was silent for a moment.

Then he answered honestly.

“I think I would have asked you to stay with me.”

Her heart skipped.

“But you don’t know.”

“No.”

“I don’t.”

He looked at her.

“But I know I loved you.”

The confession was quiet.

Simple.

Real.

Lily looked away, fighting tears.

“I loved you too.”

Adrian froze.

She smiled sadly.

“I never stopped.”

The ocean moved beneath them.

The world continued around them.

But for a moment, nothing else existed.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

The moment he looked at the screen, Lily noticed his expression change.

“What happened?”

He hesitated.

“My publisher.”

He answered.

“Hello, Martin.”

A voice came through.

“Adrian, we need your final decision.”

Adrian looked toward the ocean.

The opportunity.

The contract.

The life he had built.

Everything he had worked for.

“We need you in Paris next month.”

Silence.

“You understand what this means?”

Yes.

He understood.

A permanent position.

A chance to lead an international storytelling project.

A dream.

A dream he had spent years chasing.

But now…

It felt complicated.

After the call ended, Lily asked quietly:

“You’re leaving?”

Adrian looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

She forced a smile.

“You should go.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“You wanted this.”

“I know.”

“And I don’t want to become the reason you give up your dreams.”

“Lily…”

She looked at the ocean.

“Some people spend their lives searching for opportunities.”

“You shouldn’t lose yours because you found me again.”

Adrian felt something painful.

Because this was exactly who Lily was.

She loved deeply.

But she also knew how to let go.

And he hated that.

Because he didn’t want to be let go.

“I need time.”

Lily nodded.

“I understand.”

But her voice didn’t sound like she did.

That night, Adrian returned to his cottage.

He opened his laptop.

The Paris contract waited.

A future filled with success.

Travel.

Fame.

Everything he once wanted.

Then he looked beside the computer.

A small photograph.

A teenage boy and girl sitting beside the ocean.

The last sunset they shared.

Meanwhile, Lily returned to Harper House.

She entered the old art room.

On the desk was another envelope.

Not old.

Not dusty.

New.

Her name was written on it.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside was a letter.

From her grandfather.

But this time…

It was not about Adrian.

It was about her mother.

A truth hidden for years.

A truth that would change everything.

The final line made Lily drop the letter.

“Lily, before you give your heart to Adrian again, you must know why your mother left Silver Bay.”

Outside, the ocean became darker.

And somewhere between love and fear…

Two hearts began drifting apart again.
