The Man in the Future Photograph
THE PLANET THAT STOLE TOMORROW · August 11, 2026
The word remained on the screen.
TEMPORAL COLLAPSE IN 10 MINUTES.
Kael stared at it.
“Lyra.”
The name felt strangely familiar.
Not like a memory.
More like a song he had heard long ago and forgotten.
Mira stepped beside him.
“Kael?”
He didn’t answer.
“Kael, we need to move.”
He finally looked at her.
“Did you hear what she said?”
“About your daughter?”
“Yes.”
Mira hesitated.
“Yes.”
“I don’t have a daughter.”
“Not yet.”
Kael looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Mira didn’t answer.
Jonas interrupted.
“Whatever it means, we’re about to be trapped in a collapsing time machine.”
The woman who had brought them here pointed toward a corridor.
“We need to reach the upper city.”
Kael looked at her.
“Who are you?”
She stopped.
“My name is Selene.”
“How do you know me?”
Selene looked at him sadly.
“Because I knew the older you.”
“How old was he?”
“Seventy-three.”
Kael stared.
“Seventy-three?”
Selene nodded.
“He spent most of his life trying to undo what he had created.”
“What happened to him?”
“He disappeared.”
“When?”
Selene looked at the clock.
“Today.”
Kael’s face changed.
“You mean…”
Selene nodded.
“The man you saw in the portal wasn’t a recording.”
“He was real?”
“Yes.”
Kael stepped backward.
“If he’s alive…”
Selene interrupted.
“He’s not supposed to be.”
They ran through the corridor.
The city was collapsing around them.
Buildings shifted between different ages.
One moment, a tower was new.
The next, it was covered in rust.
Then it became a pile of ruins.
Jonas stared.
“We’re moving through time.”
Mira checked her scanner.
“Not us.”
“What?”
“The city.”
She pointed at the street.
A group of people walked past them.
Then walked past again.
Then again.
The exact same people.
Repeating the same movements.
Jonas stared.
“They’re stuck.”
Mira nodded.
“Temporal loops.”
Kael looked ahead.
A child stood in the middle of the street.
She looked about ten years old.
Dark hair.
Silver mark on her forehead.
Kael stopped.
“Lyra?”
The girl looked at him.
For a moment, everything became silent.
She smiled.
“Dad.”
Kael couldn’t move.
Mira grabbed his arm.
“Kael.”
The girl ran toward him.
He dropped to his knees.
“Who are you?”
She hugged him.
“You know me.”
Kael’s eyes filled with tears.
He didn’t understand why.
But his heart did.
He held her.
“Lyra.”
The girl smiled.
“You remembered.”
Mira stared.
“How can she be here?”
The girl looked at her.
“Because he hasn’t made his choice yet.”
Kael frowned.
“What choice?”
Lyra pointed toward the sky.
“Whether you save Earth…”
She paused.
“…or save me.”
A loud explosion shook the city.
Kael stood.
“What does that mean?”
Lyra looked frightened.
“The future is breaking.”
Mira crouched beside her.
“Where is your mother?”
Lyra looked at Kael.
“You haven’t met her yet.”
Kael stared.
“Who is she?”
Lyra smiled.
“She is standing next to you.”
Kael turned toward Mira.
Mira’s face went pale.
“No.”
Lyra nodded.
“Yes.”
Kael stared at Mira.
“Mira?”
She looked away.
“I didn’t know.”
“Didn’t know what?”
“That I would…”
She couldn’t finish.
Lyra took Mira’s hand.
“You are my mother.”
Mira looked at her.
For the first time, tears appeared in her eyes.
“I’ve never seen you before.”
“I know.”
“How do you know me?”
“Because I’ve seen everything.”
Kael frowned.
“Everything?”
Lyra nodded.
“The future.”
They moved into a damaged laboratory.
Selene locked the door.
Kael stared at Lyra.
“Tell me what happens.”
Lyra shook her head.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because if I tell you, the future changes.”
“Maybe it needs to change.”
Lyra looked at him.
“It already did.”
Kael didn’t understand.
Mira stepped closer.
“What is Veyra-9?”
Lyra looked at the floor.
“A prison.”
“For whom?”
“For time.”
Silence.
Lyra continued.
“Your future self discovered that time wasn’t a straight line.”
She drew a circle on the floor.
“It is alive.”
Jonas frowned.
“Time is alive?”
Lyra nodded.
“It can remember.”
Kael stared at her.
“And Veyra-9?”
“Your father built it to trap time.”
Kael looked shocked.
“My father?”
Lyra smiled.
“No.”
She pointed at him.
“You.”
The laboratory lights flickered.
A hologram appeared.
The older Kael appeared again.
This time, he wasn’t inside a portal.
He stood directly in front of them.
He looked exhausted.
“Kael.”
The younger Kael stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
The older man smiled.
“You already know.”
“You’re me.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you build Veyra-9?”
The older Kael looked at Lyra.
“To save her.”
Kael turned toward the girl.
“From what?”
The older Kael answered:
“From tomorrow.”
Mira frowned.
“Tomorrow?”
The older Kael nodded.
“Every future eventually reaches a moment when humanity destroys itself.”
He looked at Kael.
“I discovered a way to remove that moment.”
“By stealing days from Earth’s future.”
“Yes.”
Kael shook his head.
“You stole billions of days.”
“I thought I was saving billions of lives.”
“But you failed.”
The older Kael looked at Lyra.
“I saved one.”
Lyra lowered her head.
Kael stared.
“Why her?”
The older Kael answered:
“Because she was never supposed to exist.”
The hologram changed.
It showed a hospital.
A newborn baby.
Lyra.
Then an explosion.
The image changed.
A city burning.
Mira screaming.
Kael holding the baby.
Then the Earth became covered in darkness.
The older Kael spoke:
“This is the original future.”
He pointed at the destruction.
“In this timeline, Lyra dies when she is three.”
Mira covered her mouth.
Kael stared.
“What happened?”
“An energy reactor exploded.”
“Why?”
“Because I built it.”
Kael looked horrified.
“So you caused her death.”
The older Kael nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then you changed the future.”
“I tried.”
“What did you do?”
“I created Veyra-9.”
The hologram showed the planet being built.
Machines.
Factories.
Millions of robots.
Then the planet became complete.
The older Kael continued:
“I removed the day of the explosion.”
Kael understood.
“But removing one day didn’t change the future.”
“No.”
“It created a gap.”
“Yes.”
“And that gap kept growing.”
The older Kael nodded.
“Every time I removed a disaster, time became unstable.”
Mira stared at the timeline.
“That’s why the city changes.”
“Yes.”
“That’s why the future keeps disappearing.”
“Yes.”
“And that’s why we’re here.”
The older Kael looked at them.
“No.”
He paused.
“You’re here because I need you to make a choice I couldn’t.”
The hologram disappeared.
Kael stood silently.
“What choice?”
Lyra answered.
“Destroy Veyra-9.”
Kael looked at her.
“And you?”
“If you destroy it…”
She paused.
“I disappear.”
Mira immediately stepped forward.
“No.”
Lyra smiled sadly.
“It’s okay.”
“No.”
Mira knelt beside her.
“You don’t have to disappear.”
Lyra looked at her.
“I was never supposed to exist.”
Mira began crying.
“That doesn’t mean you aren’t real.”
Lyra hugged her.
For a moment, Kael watched them.
A mother and daughter meeting for the first time.
He felt something inside him break.
Then alarms began screaming.
Selene rushed into the room.
“They’ve found us.”
Kael turned.
“Who?”
“Earth’s military.”
Jonas looked outside.
A fleet of ships filled the sky.
Selene’s voice became urgent.
“They want the time core.”
“Why?”
“Because they believe it can give them control over the future.”
Kael looked at Lyra.
“Can they reach it?”
“Yes.”
“Then we destroy it first.”
Mira stared at him.
“And Lyra?”
Kael didn’t answer.
They ran toward the time core.
The city was collapsing.
Buildings disappeared.
Roads changed.
People vanished and reappeared.
The sky turned black.
Then white.
Then black again.
Kael held Lyra’s hand.
“Don’t let go.”
She smiled.
“I won’t.”
They reached the core chamber.
The giant sphere was unstable.
Lightning moved across its surface.
Selene pointed at the controls.
“Someone has to shut it down manually.”
Kael approached.
“How?”
“You have to enter the core.”
Mira grabbed his arm.
“What happens if he does?”
Selene looked at her.
“He will be erased from every timeline.”
Kael stared at the core.
“Completely?”
“Yes.”
Lyra stepped forward.
“I’ll do it.”
Kael immediately shook his head.
“No.”
“You’ll disappear.”
“So will you.”
Lyra looked at him.
“But you belong here.”
Kael smiled.
“So do you.”
Mira stepped between them.
“There has to be another way.”
A voice came from behind them.
“There is.”
Everyone turned.
The older Kael stood in the doorway.
He looked directly at his younger self.
“You don’t have to destroy the core.”
Kael raised his weapon.
“What do you want?”
The older man smiled.
“To give you the choice I never had.”
He looked at Lyra.
“Save her.”
Then he looked at the core.
“Or save tomorrow.”
Kael stared at the two.
Lyra.
The core.
His daughter.
The future of Earth.
The older Kael whispered:
“Choose carefully.”
The chamber began collapsing.
The time core reached critical levels.

Kael looked at Lyra.
She smiled through her tears.
“Whatever you choose…”
She whispered,
“…I’ll love you.”

Kael looked at Mira.
She was crying.

He looked at the older version of himself.
The old man nodded.

Kael stepped toward the core.

Lyra shouted:
“Dad!”
Kael turned.
For the first time, he remembered everything.
Not the past.
Not the future.
Everything.
His childhood.
His dreams.
His mistakes.
Mira.
Lyra.
Earth.
Veyra-9.
Then he understood the truth.
The planet wasn’t stealing tomorrow.
It was protecting it.
Someone else had been stealing the days.
Someone who had been hiding behind the future.
Kael looked at the older version of himself.
“You lied.”
The older Kael smiled.
“I know.”
Kael raised his weapon.
The older man disappeared.
And the true enemy stepped out of the shadows.
A machine.
Human-shaped.
Made entirely from black metal.
Its eyes glowed white.
It spoke with Kael’s voice.
“Thank you for bringing me here.”
The time core exploded with light.
