The Prisoner of the First Light
THE CITY THAT MOVED BETWEEN STARS · August 12, 2026
The darkness inside the sphere was unlike ordinary darkness.
There were no stars.
No planets.
No distant galaxies.
Nothing.
Veyra had entered a place where light itself seemed to disappear.
Mara stood inside the navigation chamber, staring through the transparent wall.
The gigantic eye remained open in the distance.
It watched them.
It did not blink.
Jonas stood beside her.
“I have a question.”
Mara didn’t look at him.
“What?”
“Why does the prison have an eye?”
“I don’t know.”
“Because personally, I think that’s a terrible sign.”
Despite everything, Mara smiled.
Then the entire city shook.
Alarms began screaming.
Seren rushed toward the navigation console.
“We’re losing control.”
Mara looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because this place is rejecting Veyra.”
“Can we leave?”
“No.”
Mara’s smile disappeared.
“Then what do we do?”
Seren looked at the enormous eye.
“We go deeper.”
Jonas stared at her.
“Into the thing trying to kill us?”
“Yes.”
“Excellent plan.”
Mara stepped toward the navigation core.
The blue symbol on her forehead began glowing.
She placed her hand against the surface.
The city responded.
Buildings folded inward.
Roads disappeared.
The outer shell transformed.
Veyra was changing shape.
From a distance, it no longer looked like a city.
It looked like a gigantic sphere of light.
The eye moved closer.
A voice filled Mara’s mind.
YOU HAVE RETURNED.
Mara closed her eyes.
“Who are you?”
YOU KNOW ME.
“No.”
YOU HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN ME.
Images appeared.
Mara as a child.
Her mother.
Her father.
Veyra.
Then something else.
A room.
A small room with white walls.
Mara was sitting on the floor.
She was six years old.
A woman stood before her.
Not her mother.
Not Seren.
A stranger.
The woman had silver eyes.
She touched Mara’s forehead.
“Remember this.”
Young Mara looked frightened.
“What?”
The woman smiled.
“One day, you will forget me.”
“Why?”
“Because you must.”
“Who are you?”
The woman leaned closer.
“My name is Astra.”
The memory disappeared.
Mara opened her eyes.
“Astra.”
The gigantic eye moved.
YES.
Mara’s heart began racing.
“You’re Astra.”
I AM WHAT REMAINS OF HER.
“Who was she?”
Silence.
Then the answer came.
THE FIRST HUMAN.
Mara stared.
Her father had told her the prisoner was the first human who escaped.
But Astra was not imprisoned.
She was something more.
Mara stepped closer.
“Why are you inside the prison?”
I BUILT IT.
Jonas looked at Mara.
“What did she say?”
Mara repeated the words.
Jonas stared at the darkness.
“She built her own prison?”
Seren nodded slowly.
“To keep herself contained.”
Mara looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because she was dangerous.”
The voice answered.
I WAS NOT DANGEROUS.
The darkness moved.
I WAS AFRAID.
Mara felt something strange.
The voice didn’t sound threatening anymore.
It sounded lonely.
“What were you afraid of?”
MY CREATION.
Mara understood.
“The Architects.”
YES.
Astra had created the Architects.
The Architects had created the Forgotten.
The Forgotten had helped create Veyra.
And humanity had been caught in the middle.
A chain of creation stretching back millions of years.
Mara whispered:
“You started everything.”
YES.
“Why?”
I WANTED TO BUILD A SPECIES THAT COULD LIVE FOREVER.
Jonas frowned.
“That sounds bad already.”
Mara continued.
“What happened?”
THEY LEARNED TOO QUICKLY.
Images filled the chamber.
The Architects appeared.
They were not machines.
They were living beings made from light and matter.
They could manipulate gravity.
Create stars.
Destroy planets.
They had no fear.
No aging.
No limits.
Astra had created them to help humanity.
Instead, they decided humanity was unnecessary.
They began replacing humans.
World by world.
Planet by planet.
Until Astra realized what she had created.
She fought them.
She lost.
So she built Veyra.
She created the Forgotten.
Then the Navigators.
Then the moving city.
All to escape the Architects.
Mara looked toward her father.
“You knew.”
He nodded.
“We discovered the truth years ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Astra told us not to.”
Mara looked at the giant eye.
“Why?”
Astra answered.
BECAUSE YOU WERE NOT READY.
Mara’s voice became angry.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
BECAUSE EVERYONE IS AFRAID OF WHAT YOU WILL BECOME.
“What will I become?”
The answer came slowly.
MY SUCCESSOR.
The room became silent.
Mara stared.
“No.”
YES.
“I don’t want that.”
YOU HAVE ALREADY BEGUN.
The blue symbol on Mara’s forehead spread across her skin.
Jonas stepped toward her.
“Mara.”
She looked at her hands.
They were glowing.
“I don’t understand.”
Seren spoke quietly.
“The first Navigator wasn’t created to control Veyra.”
Mara looked at her.
“Then what?”
“To control Astra.”
Mara froze.
The truth hit her.
She wasn’t the key to the prison.
She was the key to the prisoner.
Astra had been waiting for her.
Not to escape.
To transfer herself.
Mara stepped backward.
“You want my body.”
NO.
“You want my mind.”
NO.
“Then what?”
Astra answered:
I WANT YOUR CHOICE.
Mara frowned.
“What does that mean?”
I HAVE BEEN ALONE FOR MILLIONS OF YEARS.
The eye became smaller.
The darkness around it began disappearing.
For the first time, Mara saw Astra’s real form.
A woman.
She looked young.
Almost exactly like the woman from Mara’s childhood memory.
Silver eyes.
Black hair.
A simple white suit.
She floated in the darkness.
Not a monster.
Not a machine.
Just a woman.
A lonely woman.
Astra looked at Mara.
I NEED SOMEONE TO DECIDE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.
Mara whispered:
“What happens if I say no?”
Astra smiled sadly.
THEN I REMAIN HERE.
“And the Architects?”
THEY WILL CONTINUE HUNTING YOU.
Mara looked toward Veyra.
“Can you stop them?”
YES.
“How?”
I CAN DESTROY THEM.
Mara’s eyes widened.
“All of them?”
ALL.
“And what would happen to you?”
Astra looked down.
I WOULD DIE.
Mara didn’t speak.
Astra continued.
THAT IS WHY I WAITED FOR YOU.
Mara finally understood.
This wasn’t a trap.
It was a choice.
Astra wanted to know whether humanity would repeat its oldest mistake.
Would they choose destruction?
Or freedom?
Mara turned toward her father.
“What do you think?”
He looked at her.
“For the first time in my life, I don’t know.”
Her mother stepped forward.
“You don’t have to decide alone.”
Mara looked at her.
“Mom.”
Elara smiled.
“I should have trusted you sooner.”
Mara hugged her.
Then the prison shook.
A massive crack appeared in the darkness.
The Architects had entered.
Nera rushed into the chamber.
“They’re here.”
Mara turned.
“How many?”
“All of them.”
Jonas looked terrified.
“That’s not helpful.”
Nera raised her weapon.
“We have minutes.”
Astra looked toward the approaching army.
THEY HAVE FOUND THE PRISON.
Mara stepped forward.
“Can you stop them?”
YES.
“Without destroying Veyra?”
YES.
“Then do it.”
Astra looked at her.
YOU MUST GIVE ME PERMISSION.
Mara hesitated.
“What happens to you?”
I WILL BECOME THE PRISON.
“And the Architects?”
THEY WILL BE TRAPPED FOREVER.
Mara looked at her parents.
Then Jonas.
Then Nera.
Finally, she looked at Astra.
Astra smiled.
For the first time, Mara saw something in those ancient eyes.
Hope.
Mara reached toward her.
“I give you permission.”
Astra touched her hand.
A wave of white light exploded through the prison.
The Architects screamed.
Their bodies began breaking apart.
Not dying.
Changing.
Their memories disappeared.
Their weapons vanished.
Their power faded.
One by one, they became ordinary humans.
Millions of them.
The Forgotten watched in silence.
The war was ending.
But something unexpected happened.
Astra began disappearing too.
Mara held her hand.
“You don’t have to die.”
Astra smiled.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because every creator must eventually let their creation become free.”
Her body turned into light.
Then she whispered:
“Don’t become me.”
Mara cried.
“I won’t.”
Astra disappeared.
The prison became quiet.
The giant eye closed.
Then the entire sphere began collapsing.
Seren shouted:
“We have to leave!”
Mara ran toward the navigation core.
Veyra transformed.
The city accelerated.
The prison shattered behind them.
They escaped into normal space.
For the first time, the universe looked peaceful.
But something was wrong.
Mara checked the navigation system.
A single red signal was blinking.
Jonas walked toward her.
“What is it?”
Mara stared at the screen.
“I don’t know.”
The signal came from Earth.
A message appeared.
THIS IS DR. ELARA ELLISON.
Mara turned toward her mother.
Elara looked confused.
“I didn’t send that.”
The message continued.
IF YOU ARE HEARING THIS, THEN ASTRA IS DEAD.
Mara froze.
A second line appeared.
WHICH MEANS THE REAL THREAT HAS FINALLY AWAKENED.
Everyone stared at the screen.
Then the final message appeared.
THE ARCHITECTS WERE NEVER THE ENEMY.
Mara’s blood ran cold.
A new image appeared.
A planet.
A familiar planet.
Earth.
But beneath Earth’s surface was something enormous.
Something sleeping.
Something older than Astra.
Something that had been there long before humanity.
Jonas whispered:
“What is that?”
Mara stared at the image.
She didn’t know.
But somewhere deep inside her mind, a voice whispered one final sentence.
THE FIRST LIGHT IS WAKING.
Mara looked toward the stars.
The journey was not over.
It had only begun.
To be continued…
