The Basement of Forgotten Memories

Chapter 2

The Basement of Forgotten Memories

THE LAST MESSAGE · August 13, 2026

The staircase seemed endless.

Emma followed Jonathan into the darkness beneath Old Harbor Station.

Every step created a loud echo.

Step.

Step.

Step.

The air became colder.

The smell of dust and rust filled the underground tunnel.

Emma held her camera tightly.

She didn’t trust Jonathan.

She didn’t trust the mysterious messages.

And after everything she had discovered, she wasn’t even sure she trusted herself.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

Jonathan continued walking.

“To the place where your memories were buried.”

Emma stopped.

“What does that mean?”

Jonathan looked back.

“It means your mind was protecting you.”

“From what?”

He didn’t answer.

That made Emma more nervous.

“Jonathan.”

He finally stopped.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Then prepare yourself.”

He continued walking.

“The truth is sometimes worse than a lie.”

Emma followed.

At the bottom of the stairs was a massive underground room.

The walls were covered with old photographs.

Thousands of them.

People.

Places.

Events.

But something was strange.

Every photograph had a date.

And every date was from the future.

Emma walked closer.

One picture showed a man entering a building.

The date:

Tomorrow.

Another showed a woman standing beside a grave.

The date:

Next Week.

Another showed Emma herself.

The date:

Three Days From Now.

She touched the photograph.

“What is this?”

Jonathan looked serious.

“A prediction system.”

Emma laughed nervously.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

He walked toward a computer in the corner.

“It is not prediction.”

He turned on the screen.

“It is memory.”

Emma frowned.

“I don’t understand.”

Jonathan opened a file.

A video appeared.

The screen showed Emma.

But she looked different.

Older.

Tired.

She was sitting in this same room.

The future Emma looked directly at the camera.

“If you are watching this, then I failed.”

Emma froze.

Her own voice.

Her own face.

But years older.

Future Emma continued:

“Jonathan will tell you he is trying to help.”

The screen flickered.

“He is.”

Emma looked at Jonathan.

“But he is also responsible.”

Jonathan looked away.

Emma stared.

“Responsible for what?”

The video continued.

“The station was never abandoned.”

Future Emma whispered:

“It was a laboratory.”

Emma stepped closer.

“Laboratory?”

“Yes.”

The video showed old images.

Scientists.

Machines.

People wearing white coats.

Future Emma continued:

“They created a way to record memories.”

Jonathan interrupted.

“Enough.”

Emma looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because you don’t remember the worst part.”

“What worst part?”

Jonathan didn’t answer.

The video continued.

Future Emma looked terrified.

“They didn’t just record memories.”

A pause.

“They changed them.”

The screen went black.

Emma stood silently.

Her mind was racing.

“Someone changed my memories?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

He looked toward the deepest part of the basement.

“The Memory Project.”

Emma whispered:

“What is that?”

Jonathan walked toward an old metal door.

“Your biggest investigation.”

Emma shook her head.

“I have never investigated anything called the Memory Project.”

Jonathan looked at her.

“That is because they erased it.”

He opened the door.

Inside was a small room.

A single chair.

A machine.

And dozens of video tapes.

Emma walked inside.

On the wall was written:

SUBJECT 07

Her face changed.

“What is Subject 07?”

Jonathan looked at the machine.

“You.”

Silence.

Emma stepped backward.

“No.”

Jonathan picked up one of the tapes.

“The project needed volunteers.”

“I wasn’t a volunteer.”

Jonathan looked at her.

“You were.”

Emma shook her head.

“I would remember.”

“That is the problem.”

He inserted the tape.

The screen turned on.

A recording appeared.

A young Emma sat in the chair.

She looked seventeen.

The same age she was when Lily disappeared.

A man in a white coat stood beside her.

Doctor Marcus Vane.

Emma recognized the name.

He was a famous neuroscientist.

He disappeared years ago.

The doctor spoke.

“Subject 07, do you understand the procedure?”

Young Emma nodded.

“Yes.”

The doctor smiled.

“Why are you doing this?”

Young Emma answered:

“To bring Lily back.”

Emma covered her mouth.

The room started spinning.

“No…”

Jonathan watched her carefully.

“You wanted to erase the pain.”

The video continued.

Young Emma looked at the camera.

“I can’t live knowing she died.”

Doctor Vane said:

“The process will remove the memory of the event.”

Young Emma asked:

“And Lily?”

The doctor paused.

“She will become a forgotten person.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“No…”

Jonathan turned off the video.

Emma looked at him.

“I agreed to this?”

“Yes.”

“Why don’t I remember?”

“Because the procedure worked.”

She stared at the machine.

Then she noticed something.

A label on the side.

MEMORY TRANSFER — SUBJECT 07

Emma whispered:

“Transfer?”

Jonathan nodded.

“They didn’t erase your memories.”

“Then what?”

“They moved them.”

“Where?”

Jonathan looked at the tapes.

“Into someone else.”

Emma’s phone suddenly vibrated.

Both of them looked at it.

A new message appeared.

YOU ARE FINALLY LEARNING THE TRUTH.

Emma typed:

WHO ARE YOU?

The reply came instantly.

YOU ALREADY KNOW.

Another message appeared.

A picture.

Emma opened it.

Her hands shook.

It was a photograph of Jonathan.

But not the Jonathan standing beside her.

This Jonathan was sitting in the Memory Project room.

The date was ten years earlier.

The message below said:

HE WAS SUBJECT 08.

Emma looked at Jonathan.

“What does this mean?”

Jonathan didn’t speak.

“Jonathan?”

His face became serious.

“Emma, listen to me.”

“You were part of this.”

“Yes.”

“So were you.”

“Yes.”

“Then why don’t you remember?”

Jonathan looked at the machine.

“Because my memories were stolen too.”

Emma stepped closer.

“Who did this?”

Jonathan whispered:

“The same person who is sending you messages.”

The basement lights suddenly went off.

Darkness surrounded them.

Emma heard movement.

Someone was inside the room.

A third person.

She whispered:

“Jonathan…”

“I know.”

A voice came from the darkness.

A familiar voice.

Emma froze.

Because she knew that voice.

It was hers.

“Hello, Emma.”

The lights turned on.

A woman stood at the door.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same voice.

Emma stared.

“No…”

The woman smiled.

“I know this is confusing.”

Emma couldn’t move.

“You are me.”

The woman nodded.

“Yes.”

Jonathan stepped backward.

“Impossible.”

The woman looked at him.

“You thought you deleted me.”

Emma looked between them.

“What is happening?”

The woman smiled sadly.

“I’m the memory you lost.”

Emma’s heart raced.

The woman walked closer.

“I’m the part of you that remembers everything.”

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“And I know who really killed Lily.”

Emma’s breathing stopped.

“Who?”

The woman looked directly at Jonathan.

“Him.”

Jonathan’s face changed.

Emma looked at him.

“Jonathan?”

The woman continued:

“He didn’t save you.”

She stepped closer.

“He created you.”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

The woman smiled.

“The Emma standing here…”

She pointed at her.

“…is not the original.”

The basement became silent.

Emma looked at Jonathan.

“Tell me she’s lying.”

Jonathan didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Emma felt the world collapse.

The woman leaned closer.

“Welcome back, Emma.”

Then every screen in the basement turned on.

A message appeared:

MEMORY RESTORATION COMPLETE.

And beneath it:

SUBJECT 07 IS AWAKE.

Emma stared at the words.

Because suddenly…

she remembered everything.

And the truth was far worse than any nightmare.
