The Secret Between Us

Chapter 4

The Secret Between Us

Where the Moonlight Found Us · August 18, 2026

For the next two weeks, Maya and Daniel became inseparable.

They worked together almost every day.

They visited old streets, quiet cafés, forgotten gardens, crowded markets, and places most people walked past without noticing.

Daniel took photographs.

Maya wrote the stories.

But somewhere between the photographs and the stories, something else began growing.

Something neither of them had named.

They talked about everything.

Childhood dreams.

Favorite books.

Places they wanted to visit.

The kind of homes they wanted someday.

And sometimes, they talked about nothing at all.

Those were Maya’s favorite moments.

One evening, they sat on the steps outside the old theater.

The sky was painted pink and gold.

Daniel looked at her.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Why don’t you believe in love?”

Maya went silent.

She hadn’t expected the question.

“I never said I don’t believe in it.”

“You don’t have to.”

He smiled gently.

“It’s written all over your face.”

Maya looked away.

“My parents were in love once.”

Daniel waited.

“They were happy. At least, that’s what I remember.”

She took a breath.

“Then they changed.”

“What happened?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked at the fading sunlight.

“Maybe people change. Maybe love changes. Maybe promises become too heavy.”

Daniel’s voice was soft.

“Do you think love always ends?”

Maya shook her head.

“I think people stop choosing each other.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then maybe real love isn’t about never changing.”

“What is it about?”

“Choosing the same person even after everything changes.”

Maya looked at him.

“And would you?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said,

“If I ever find the right person, I will.”

Her heart skipped.

She knew what he was saying.

But she was afraid to believe it.

The following morning, Maya arrived at the office and found Daniel waiting near her desk.

He looked unusually serious.

“What happened?”

He handed her an envelope.

“What’s this?”

“Open it.”

Maya opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

She stared at it.

It was a picture of her standing beneath the rain on the night they first met.

She hadn’t known he had taken it.

She looked beautiful.

Not because of the way she looked.

Because she looked peaceful.

She turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten sentence on the back.

“The night I stopped feeling alone.”

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

She looked at him.

“Daniel…”

“I know it’s probably too much.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“It’s beautiful.”

He smiled.

“I wanted you to have it.”

Maya held the photograph against her chest.

“Thank you.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You know you changed something in me too.”

“What?”

“I used to take photographs because I was afraid of forgetting.”

Maya looked at him.

“And now?”

“Now I take them because I want to remember.”

Her heart felt painfully full.

She wanted to tell him everything.

That she thought about him before sleeping.

That she looked for his name on her phone every morning.

That his smile had become her favorite part of the day.

But fear stopped her.

Instead, she whispered,

“Daniel…”

“Yes?”

“I think I’m falling for you.”

He became completely still.

Maya’s heart raced.

For a moment, she thought she had made a terrible mistake.

Then Daniel smiled.

Not his usual smile.

Something deeper.

Something full of relief.

He reached for her hand.

“I’ve been falling for you since the night you complained about my coffee.”

Maya laughed through her tears.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Maybe.”

He squeezed her hand.

“But it’s true.”

She looked into his eyes.

“Then why didn’t you say anything?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Of losing you.”

Maya’s eyes softened.

“You can’t lose someone you haven’t had.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then let me have you.”

She smiled.

“That sounds like a terrible proposal.”

He laughed.

“Let me try again.”

He gently took both her hands.

“Maya, I don’t know where this will go.”

She listened quietly.

“I don’t know what tomorrow looks like. I don’t know what life will ask from us.”

He paused.

“But I know that when I’m with you, I don’t want to be anywhere else.”

Maya smiled.

“That’s better.”

“Is that a yes?”

She nodded.

“It’s a yes.”

Daniel pulled her into his arms.

For the first time, Maya allowed herself to believe.

Maybe love wasn’t a promise that nothing would ever hurt.

Maybe love was simply finding someone worth staying for.

But happiness rarely arrives without fear.

That evening, Maya was walking home when she received a message from Daniel.

Daniel: Can you meet me tomorrow night?

Maya: Of course. Why?

Daniel: There’s something I need to tell you.

Maya stared at the message.

Her smile disappeared.

Maya: Is something wrong?

No reply.

She waited.

Ten minutes.

Twenty.

Nothing.

That night, Maya couldn’t sleep.

The next evening, she arrived at their usual café.

Daniel wasn’t there.

Five minutes passed.

Ten.

Twenty.

Then her phone rang.

It was Daniel.

She answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

His voice was quiet.

“Maya, I’m sorry.”

Her heart sank.

“Why?”

“I should have told you earlier.”

“Told me what?”

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered,

“I have to leave the city.”

Maya couldn’t breathe.

“What?”

“My photography company is sending me to Paris.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

“When are you leaving?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

The café suddenly felt too loud.

Maya stared at the empty chair across from her.

“Tomorrow?”

“I’m sorry.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Almost a week.”

Maya closed her eyes.

“You knew for a week and didn’t tell me?”

“I wanted one more week with you.”

Her voice broke.

“You should have trusted me.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

She stood.

“I thought we were choosing each other.”

“We are.”

“Then why does it feel like you’re leaving me?”

Daniel’s voice trembled.

“Because I don’t want to leave you.”

Maya wiped away a tear.

“Then don’t.”

Silence.

“I can’t.”

Those two words shattered something inside her.

She ended the call.

Outside, rain began falling.

Again.

Maya stood beneath the café’s awning, holding the photograph Daniel had given her.

She turned it over.

The night I stopped feeling alone.

A tear fell across the words.

She whispered,

“Maybe I was never meant to stay happy.”

Across the city, Daniel stood beside his packed suitcase.

His phone rested in his hand.

He wanted to call her.

He wanted to run back.

But there was one truth Maya didn’t know.

The Paris trip wasn’t the real reason he was leaving.

There was another secret.

A secret he had been hiding from everyone.

And tomorrow, Maya was going to discover it.
