Where We Belong

Chapter 6

Where We Belong

WHEN THE STARS FELL BETWEEN US · August 20, 2026

Six months later, Bellmere no longer felt like the town Emma had once escaped.

It felt like home.

The lighthouse had been restored.

The old harbor had new lights.

And the little café beside the sea was filled every evening with music and laughter.

Emma stood near the lighthouse window, holding a cup of coffee.

She watched the waves below.

“Still thinking too much?”

She smiled before turning around.

Noah stood in the doorway.

“Always.”

He walked toward her.

“You’ve been here for an hour.”

“I like the view.”

“You’ve liked the view since you were seventeen.”

Emma laughed.

“Maybe.”

Noah stood beside her.

For a moment, they watched the ocean together.

Six months had passed since Richard’s arrest.

The investigation had exposed years of secrets.

Emma’s father had finally returned home.

Her mother had stopped hiding.

And Noah had learned the truth about his own father.

His father had been forced into Richard’s plans but had eventually helped the authorities.

The past was still painful.

But it no longer controlled their lives.

Emma looked at Noah.

“Do you ever think about that night?”

“The train station?”

“Yes.”

“Sometimes.”

“What would you do differently?”

He thought for a moment.

“I’d run to Platform One.”

She smiled.

“I would have waited longer.”

“You waited four hours.”

“I could have waited five.”

Noah laughed.

Emma rested her head against his shoulder.

“I hate that we lost so much time.”

“So do I.”

“Three years.”

“I know.”

“Do you think we can get them back?”

Noah looked at her.

“No.”

Emma looked disappointed.

“But we can make the next fifty years better.”

She smiled.

“Fifty?”

“At least.”

“Very confident.”

“I’ve been waiting long enough.”

She laughed.

Then Noah took something from his pocket.

A small silver box.

Emma looked at it.

“What is that?”

“Open it.”

She did.

Inside was the necklace her father had left her.

But the heart-shaped pendant had been repaired.

There was a tiny engraving on the back.

Always find your way home.

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“You fixed it.”

“Your father gave it to me.”

“When?”

“This morning.”

Emma looked toward the door.

Her father stood there.

He smiled.

“I thought you should have it.”

Emma walked toward him and hugged him.

“Thank you.”

He kissed her forehead.

“I’m sorry for everything.”

Emma held him tightly.

“I forgive you.”

Her mother joined them.

For a moment, the four of them stood together.

A family.

Finally.

Later that evening, Emma walked along the beach with Noah.

The sky was painted orange and pink.

She took off her shoes and walked barefoot through the sand.

Noah followed.

“Emma.”

She turned.

He was holding a small envelope.

Her heart started beating faster.

“What is that?”

“A letter.”

“For me?”

“Yes.”

She opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Emma,

I loved you when we were young.

I loved you when we were apart.

And somehow, after everything we’ve been through, I love you even more now.

I don’t want to promise you that life will always be easy.

It won’t.

There will be storms.

There will be difficult days.

There will be moments when we don’t know what comes next.

But I promise you one thing.

I will never make you face them alone.

Emma lowered the letter.

Noah was standing in front of her.

He reached into his pocket.

This time, there was no box.

Only a ring.

Emma covered her mouth.

“Noah…”

“I know we’ve already lost enough time.”

He took her hand.

“So I don’t want to waste another minute.”

He knelt in the sand.

“Emma Carter, will you marry me?”

She looked at him through tears.

For three years, she had believed love was something fragile.

Something that disappeared when life became difficult.

But Noah had taught her otherwise.

Love wasn’t the absence of pain.

It was choosing someone even after pain.

It was staying.

It was forgiving.

It was finding your way back.

She smiled.

“Yes.”

Noah stood and placed the ring on her finger.

Emma pulled him into a hug.

Then they kissed as the sun disappeared beneath the horizon.

Months later, the lighthouse was filled with flowers.

Emma walked slowly toward Noah.

Her father stood beside her.

Her mother was crying.

Noah smiled when he saw her.

The ceremony was small.

Only family and close friends.

But to Emma, it felt like the whole world was there.

When they exchanged vows, Noah held her hands.

“You were always my home.”

Emma smiled.

“And you were always the place my heart was trying to find.”

They kissed.

Everyone applauded.

Later that night, Emma stood outside the lighthouse with Noah.

The stars were bright above them.

“Remember when you told me stars were reminders?”

“Yes.”

“What do you think they’re reminding us of tonight?”

Emma looked at him.

“That we made it.”

Noah smiled.

“We did.”

She rested her head on his shoulder.

“Do you think we would have found each other if everything had gone differently?”

Noah looked at the sea.

“Maybe.”

“And if we hadn’t?”

He turned toward her.

“Then I’d still be looking.”

Emma smiled.

The lighthouse beam moved slowly across the ocean.

Once every few seconds, it illuminated the dark water.

Emma watched it.

A light searching through darkness.

Just like them.

She had spent years believing that some endings were permanent.

Now she understood something different.

Sometimes an ending is only a pause.

Sometimes the person you lose becomes the person you find again.

And sometimes the love story you thought was over is only waiting for the right moment to begin again.

Emma took Noah’s hand.

Together, they walked toward the lighthouse.

Toward the future.

Toward all the ordinary mornings and difficult nights that waited ahead.

Toward a life they would build together.

And beneath the stars that had watched them lose each other…

They finally had everything they had once believed was impossible.

Each other.

Home.

And forever.
