The Second Daughter

Chapter 3

The Second Daughter

The House Beneath the Fog · August 20, 2026

Mira stood at the top of the stairs.

Her mother’s voice came from somewhere below.

“Don’t believe him.”

Daniel tightened his grip around Mira’s wrist.

“She’s trying to confuse you.”

Mira pulled her hand away.

“You said she was alive.”

“She is.”

“Then why is she down there?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Mira looked into the darkness.

For eleven years, she had dreamed about hearing her mother’s voice again.

Now that dream had become a nightmare.

She took the first step.

Daniel followed.

The staircase seemed endless.

Cold air moved upward from below, carrying the smell of damp stone.

After nearly a minute, they reached the bottom.

A long underground corridor stretched ahead.

At the end was a metal door.

There was blood on the floor.

Fresh blood.

Mira stopped.

“Dad…”

Daniel looked down.

His expression changed.

“Stay behind me.”

He approached the door and slowly opened it.

Inside was a small room.

An old chair stood in the center.

A woman sat in it.

Her hands were tied.

Her hair was gray.

Her face was thinner than Mira remembered.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

“Mom.”

The woman lifted her head.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Mira.”

Mira rushed forward.

Daniel grabbed her.

“No.”

“She’s my mother!”

“Look at her hands.”

Mira stared.

There were small red marks around her wrists.

Her mother looked terrified.

“Please,” she whispered. “Don’t let him take me again.”

Daniel stepped into the room.

“Elena, stop.”

Mira looked between them.

“What’s happening?”

Her mother shook her head.

“Your father lied to you.”

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“She is not your mother.”

Mira froze.

The woman began crying.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Daniel pointed at her.

“Ask her what happened on the night of the fire.”

Mira turned toward Elena.

“What fire?”

Elena closed her eyes.

Daniel answered.

“The fire that killed your sister.”

Silence.

Mira stared at him.

“My sister?”

“You were told you were an only child.”

“Because you were.”

Elena’s voice was barely audible.

Daniel looked at her.

“Tell her.”

Elena said nothing.

Mira stepped closer.

“I want the truth.”

Her mother looked at her.

Then she whispered:

“You had a twin.”

Mira felt the room spinning.

“A twin?”

“Her name was Mara.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Elena.”

But she continued.

“You were born three minutes apart.”

Mira looked at the photographs in her hands.

The identical girls.

One smiling.

One crying.

“Mara was the second daughter.”

“What happened to her?”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“We were told she died.”

“Who told you?”

“A doctor.”

“Which doctor?”

Elena looked toward Daniel.

“Your father knows.”

Mira turned.

“Dad?”

Daniel remained silent.

That was answer enough.

Mira stepped toward him.

“You knew.”

“I knew about Mara.”

“You knew I had a sister?”

“I knew she existed.”

“Where is she?”

Daniel looked away.

Mira’s voice rose.

“Where is my sister?”

A sound came from the corridor.

Three slow knocks.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Everyone froze.

Daniel reached for his gun.

Mira stared at the doorway.

Someone was standing outside.

A girl’s voice came from the darkness.

“Mira?”

Mira’s blood ran cold.

The voice sounded exactly like hers.

“Who are you?” she whispered.

No answer.

The figure stepped into the light.

A young woman stood in the doorway.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same scar.

Same dark hair.

Mira couldn’t breathe.

The woman smiled sadly.

“I’ve been waiting for you.”

Daniel raised his gun.

The woman looked at him.

“You still carry that?”

Daniel’s hand trembled.

Mira turned toward him.

“Dad…”

The woman laughed softly.

“He never told you the rest.”

Mira stared at her.

“Are you Mara?”

The woman’s smile disappeared.

“No.”

A pause.

“I’m Mira.”

Mira’s heart stopped.

The woman pointed at her.

“You’re Mara.”

Daniel lowered his gun.

Elena began sobbing.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Mira shook her head.

“No.”

The woman stepped closer.

“You were the one they took.”

“Who?”

“The people who lived beneath this house.”

Mira looked at Daniel.

He wouldn’t meet her eyes.

The woman continued.

“They erased your memories. They changed your name. They gave you to another family.”

Mira’s head throbbed.

Images flashed through her mind.

A white room.

Bright lights.

A little girl holding her hand.

A man wearing a doctor’s coat.

A needle.

A voice saying:

Forget.

Mira grabbed her head.

“No…”

Daniel moved toward her.

“Mira, listen to me.”

She backed away.

“Don’t touch me.”

“You need to remember.”

“I don’t want to!”

The woman stepped forward.

“You have to.”

Suddenly, every light in the underground room turned red.

An alarm began screaming.

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

“They found us.”

“Who?” Mira asked.

He pulled the door shut.

“The people who built this place.”

A heavy metallic sound echoed through the corridor.

Then another.

Doors were opening.

One after another.

Daniel grabbed Elena’s restraints and began cutting them.

“We have less than five minutes.”

Mira stared at the woman who looked exactly like her.

“Who are you?”

The woman leaned closer.

Her voice became a whisper.

“I’m the daughter they failed to erase.”

Then she looked toward the darkness.

“And they’re coming for the daughter they successfully erased.”

The corridor lights flickered.

Footsteps began approaching.

Dozens of them.

Mira looked at her father.

For the first time, she saw something in his eyes she had never seen before.

Not fear.

Guilt.

And she finally understood.

Her father’s disappearance had never been about protecting her from the truth.

He had been hiding the truth from her.

And somewhere beneath the house, someone had spent eleven years preparing for the day she would remember who she really was.
