The Room Without a Door

Chapter 4

The Room Without a Door

The House Beneath the Fog · August 20, 2026

The footsteps were getting closer.

Mira could hear them through the walls.

Slow.

Heavy.

Organized.

Daniel finally freed Elena’s hands.

“Move,” he whispered.

They rushed into the corridor.

The woman who looked like Mira followed behind them.

Mira kept staring at her.

She wanted answers.

But every time she opened her mouth, another question appeared.

They reached a narrow passage.

Daniel stopped beside a stone wall.

“There.”

He pressed his palm against it.

Nothing happened.

He pressed again.

A hidden mechanism clicked.

A section of the wall moved inward.

Behind it was another passage.

Mira stared.

“How many secret rooms does this house have?”

Daniel looked at her.

“More than you want to know.”

They entered.

The wall closed behind them.

For a moment, everything was silent.

Then Elena spoke.

“He’s coming.”

Mira turned.

“Who?”

Elena looked at Daniel.

“Dr. Voss.”

Daniel’s face became pale.

Mira recognized the name.

She had seen it in her father’s old documents.

“Who is Dr. Voss?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

The other woman did.

“He created the experiment.”

Mira stopped walking.

“What experiment?”

The woman looked directly at her.

“The experiment that created you.”

Mira shook her head.

“I’m not an experiment.”

“You were.”

“No.”

“You were born naturally. But after that, they changed you.”

Mira looked at Elena.

“Is this true?”

Elena began crying.

“Part of it.”

“Only part?”

Daniel finally spoke.

“Your memories were altered.”

Mira felt cold.

“Why?”

“Because you saw something.”

“What?”

“Your sister being killed.”

The words echoed through the passage.

Mira couldn’t breathe.

She remembered a little girl.

A red dress.

A broken window.

Fire.

Someone screaming.

Then darkness.

“No,” she whispered.

Daniel continued.

“You were eight years old. Mara was taken to the underground facility. You followed her.”

Mira pressed a hand against the wall.

“And I saw her die?”

“No.”

The other woman interrupted.

“You saw them pretend to kill her.”

Mira looked at her.

The woman nodded.

“They wanted you to believe Mara was dead.”

“Why?”

“Because you were the only witness.”

Mira’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then who is she?”

She pointed at the woman.

The woman smiled faintly.

“I told you. I’m Mira.”

Mira stared.

“Then who am I?”

The woman stepped closer.

“You are Mara.”

Silence.

Daniel looked away.

Mira suddenly understood.

The photograph.

The two girls.

The dates.

The missing memories.

Everything began connecting.

She was not Mira.

She was Mara.

The girl everyone believed had died.

The girl who had been erased.

The girl who had been given another life.

Mira’s knees weakened.

Elena caught her.

“I’m sorry.”

Mira pushed her away.

“You knew?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You let me live under a false name!”

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

Elena looked broken.

“Not when they were watching.”

A loud metallic bang came from behind the wall.

Everyone froze.

Daniel pulled out his weapon.

“They found the entrance.”

He looked at the two identical women.

“We need to split up.”

Mira stared at him.

“No.”

“If we stay together, they’ll take all of us.”

“Who are they?”

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

“The people who funded Voss.”

“Who?”

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your grandfather.”

Mira’s eyes widened.

“My grandfather died before I was born.”

“That’s what we told you.”

Another explosion shook the corridor.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Daniel opened a second hidden door.

“Go.”

Mira grabbed his arm.

“You’re coming with us.”

“I’ll slow them down.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, he looked like the father she remembered.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t there.”

Mira’s eyes filled with tears.

“Dad…”

He smiled sadly.

“Find the room without a door.”

“What room?”

“The room where they kept your memories.”

The door began shaking.

Someone was trying to break through.

Daniel pushed Mira toward the passage.

“Go!”

The women ran.

Mira looked back one last time.

Her father stood alone in the corridor.

The door exploded open.

Several men in black entered.

Daniel raised his gun.

Then the passage closed.

Mira, Elena, and the other woman continued running.

They reached an enormous underground chamber.

There were computers everywhere.

Old medical equipment.

Glass containers.

Photographs.

And hundreds of files.

Mira approached a large monitor.

A name appeared on the screen.

PROJECT MIRROR

Below it were two identification numbers.

SUBJECT 01 — MIRA VALE

SUBJECT 02 — MARA VALE

Mira stared.

Then another line appeared.

SUBJECT 01 — DECEASED

SUBJECT 02 — ACTIVE

Her heart stopped.

She looked at the woman beside her.

“Which one of us is Subject 02?”

Before the woman could answer, the screen changed.

A video began playing.

A younger version of Daniel appeared.

He was standing beside a doctor.

Dr. Voss.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, the memory procedure failed.”

Mira stepped closer.

Her father’s younger voice continued.

“Mara survived.”

The woman beside Mira smiled.

But then the recording continued.

“However, there is something you don’t know.”

Daniel looked terrified.

“Mara was never the dangerous one.”

The screen went black.

A final sentence appeared.

THE DANGER IS THE OTHER GIRL.

Mira slowly turned toward her identical sister.

Her sister was holding a knife.

And smiling.
