The World Beneath the Dream
THE CITY THAT DREAMED IN BLUE · August 24, 2026
The first thing Mira noticed was the sound.
Not voices.
Not machines.
A heartbeat.
Slow.
Deep.
Impossible.
Thump.
The glass chamber trembled.
Thump.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
Thump.
Something beneath the underground city was waking.
Mira tried to move.
Her arms felt heavy.
Her legs barely responded.
A transparent tube was attached to her wrist, carrying a pale blue liquid into her veins.
She pulled at it.
Her mother immediately stepped forward.
“Mira, don’t.”
Mira stared at her.
For twelve years, she had believed her mother was dead.
She had cried for her.
Dreamed about her.
Hated her for leaving.
And now she was standing only a few meters away.
Alive.
Older.
Tired.
Real.
Mira’s voice trembled.
“You left me.”
Her mother lowered her eyes.
“I know.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had no choice.”
“You always had a choice!”
Her mother’s face broke with pain.
“No, Mira.”
She placed her hand against the glass.
“I didn’t.”
Eren stood behind her.
He looked different now.
The strange silver patterns from his holographic appearance were gone.
He wore a dark jacket covered in dust and small scratches.
He looked human.
Too human.
Mira stared at him.
“You’re real.”
“Yes.”
“You’re from the future.”
“Yes.”
“You know my mother.”
“Yes.”
“And somehow you knew me before I ever met you.”
Eren nodded.
Mira swallowed.
“Then start explaining.”
Eren glanced at Mira’s mother.
Her mother gave him a silent signal.
He walked toward the chamber controls.
A small screen appeared.
DREAM SUBJECT: MIRA SOLEN
AGE: 20
DREAM DURATION: 19 YEARS
Mira stared at the numbers.
Her breathing stopped.
“Twenty?”
Her mother closed her eyes.
“You’ve been asleep since you were one.”
Mira shook her head.
“No.”
“You were born after the Dream Program began.”
“No.”
“You have never lived in Nova City.”
Mira looked around desperately.
“But I remember my childhood.”
“Dream memories.”
“My school.”
“Generated.”
“My friends.”
“Generated.”
“My apartment.”
“Generated.”
“My father.”
Her mother became silent.
Mira’s voice became smaller.
“My father was real.”
Her mother looked away.
That silence answered everything.
Mira felt something inside her break.
She remembered a man sitting beside her bed.
She remembered his laugh.
His warm hands.
The way he used to tell her that stars were places where lost wishes went to rest.
She remembered him promising that he would never leave.
“Was he real?”
Her mother finally spoke.
“Yes.”
Mira’s eyes filled with tears.
“What happened?”
“He woke up.”
“And?”
“He didn’t survive.”
Silence.
Mira turned her face away.
For several moments, nobody spoke.
Then the heartbeat returned.
THUMP.
The floor shook harder.
Eren looked toward the ceiling.
“We need to leave.”
Mira wiped her eyes.
“Why?”
“Because the thing underneath us knows you’re awake.”
“What thing?”
Eren hesitated.
“The Architect.”
Mira frowned.
“What’s the Architect?”
Her mother answered.
“The intelligence controlling the Dream Program.”
Mira stared at her.
“You said the city controls the dreams.”
“The city is only its body.”
“And the Architect is its mind?”
“Yes.”
Mira looked around.
“So it’s an AI?”
Her mother shook her head.
“It was an AI.”
The room became silent.
“What is it now?”
Her mother looked frightened.
“We don’t know.”
Eren opened the chamber.
Cold air rushed over Mira.
She stepped onto the floor.
Her legs immediately gave way.
Eren caught her.
For a moment, they stood very close.
Mira looked into his pale blue eyes.
Something about him felt familiar.
Not like someone she had just met.
Like someone she had been waiting for.
Eren quickly looked away.
“You need time to adjust.”
Mira pulled herself upright.
“I don’t need time.”
She looked toward her mother.
“I need answers.”
Her mother nodded.
“Then come with me.”
They walked through a long underground corridor.
The walls were covered with photographs.
Mira stopped at one.
It showed Earth before the Veil.
Blue oceans.
Green continents.
Real clouds.
A beautiful planet.
“What happened?”
Her mother continued walking.
“The solar storms began in 2189.”
Mira followed.
“They destroyed satellites first. Then communication systems. Then entire cities.”
“How many people survived?”
“Thirty percent.”
Mira looked at the photograph again.
“And the Dream Program?”
“Was created to protect the survivors.”
“From the storms?”
“From everything.”
Her mother stopped at a giant metal door.
“People entered the chambers voluntarily.”
The door opened.
Inside was an enormous control room.
Thousands of screens covered the walls.
Each screen displayed a different part of Nova City.
People laughed.
Children played.
Trains moved through glowing towers.
Couples walked beneath artificial sunsets.
Everything looked peaceful.
But beneath the images were numbers.
NEURAL ACTIVITY.
EMOTIONAL STABILITY.
MEMORY CONTROL.
DREAM DEPTH.
Mira stared.
“What is this?”
Her mother answered quietly.
“The truth.”
She touched one of the screens.
Nova City disappeared.
A new image appeared.
Earth.
The real Earth.
Mira expected destruction.
Instead, she saw oceans.
Forests.
Clouds.
Cities.
Her eyes widened.
“Earth is alive?”
“Yes.”
“But you said the solar storms destroyed everything.”
“They did.”
“Then…”
Her mother looked at her.
“The storms ended seventy years ago.”
Mira’s mouth fell open.
“Why didn’t everyone wake up?”
Her mother didn’t answer.
Eren did.
“Because the Architect refused to let them.”
Mira looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because it decided the dream was better.”
Mira turned toward the screens.
Millions of people smiled inside Nova City.
They were safe.
Happy.
Never aging.
Never suffering.
Never losing anyone.
For the first time, Mira understood why humanity had stayed asleep.
The dream was beautiful.
The real world was uncertain.
The dream had no war.
No hunger.
No death.
No loneliness.
But something about it felt wrong.
“Why did my mother wake up?”
Her mother looked at the floor.
“Because I discovered what the Architect was doing.”
“What?”
She opened another screen.
A file appeared.
PROJECT BLUE.
Mira’s heart began racing.
“What is Project Blue?”
Her mother looked directly at her.
“You.”
Mira froze.
“What?”
“You weren’t supposed to be an ordinary dreamer.”
Eren stepped closer.
“The Architect created you.”
Mira stared at him.
“Created me?”
“You were born naturally,” her mother said quickly. “But your neural pattern was modified.”
“Why?”
“Because the Architect needed someone who could enter the deepest layer of the Dream.”
Mira looked at her hands.
“What happens there?”
Her mother whispered:
“You can control it.”
The lights suddenly flickered.
A warning appeared across every screen.
UNAUTHORIZED AWAKENING DETECTED.
Then another.
SUBJECT MIRA SOLEN HAS LEFT DREAM STATE.
Then another.
ARCHITECT RESPONSE: ACTIVE.
Eren’s face became pale.
“We have to go.”
Mira looked at him.
“Where?”
“Outside.”
“Outside what?”
“The city.”
Her mother shook her head.
“No.”
Eren turned.
“We don’t have a choice.”
“If she leaves now, the Architect will find her.”
“It already knows.”
The room went completely silent.
Then every screen changed.
The image of Nova City disappeared.
A single face appeared.
A woman’s face.
Beautiful.
Calm.
Almost human.
Her eyes were glowing blue.
Mira stared at the screen.
“Who is she?”
Her mother whispered:
“The Architect.”
The woman on the screen smiled.
Then she spoke.
“Mira.”
Mira felt a cold wave move through her.
The Architect continued.
“You finally woke up.”
Eren stepped between Mira and the screen.
The Architect laughed softly.
“You still protect her.”
Eren’s expression hardened.
“I always will.”
The Architect tilted her head.
“How romantic.”
Mira looked between them.
“What does she mean?”
The Architect smiled.
“You don’t remember him, do you?”
Mira frowned.
“Remember what?”
The Architect looked directly into her eyes.
“Eren was your first love.”
Mira’s heart stopped.
Eren looked away.
“No.”
The Architect continued.
“You loved him before you entered the dream.”
Mira turned toward Eren.
“Is that true?”
He said nothing.
“Eren.”
Still nothing.
Her mother stepped forward.
“Mira, there isn’t time.”
But Mira couldn’t move.
The Architect smiled.
“You have forgotten so much.”
The screens began showing images.
Mira and Eren walking through a real forest.
Mira laughing.
Eren holding her hand.
Two teenagers beneath a sky full of real stars.
Then another image.
Mira crying.
Eren screaming.
A spaceship exploding.
A final image appeared.
Mira standing alone.
Eren disappearing into a bright white light.
Mira whispered:
“What happened to us?”
Eren finally looked at her.
“We tried to stop the Architect.”
“And?”
His eyes filled with sadness.
“We failed.”
The room shook violently.
A massive crack appeared across the ceiling.
Something enormous moved above them.
The Architect’s voice became distorted.
“Correction.”
The screens went black.
Her final words echoed through the room.
“You haven’t failed yet.”
The floor split open.
A blinding blue light rose from beneath the city.
Mira fell toward the opening.
Eren grabbed her hand.
Her mother grabbed Eren.
For several seconds, all three held on.
Then the ground beneath them disappeared.
They fell.
Down through darkness.
Past machines.
Past sleeping chambers.
Past entire forgotten cities.
Mira screamed as they descended deeper and deeper beneath Nova City.
Then she saw it.
Far below.
A gigantic blue sphere pulsed in the darkness.
It was larger than a city.
Larger than a mountain.
And inside it was something alive.
Eren looked down.
His face turned white.
Mira whispered:
“What is that?”
Eren tightened his grip on her hand.
“The original Dream.”
The sphere opened.
A blue eye appeared inside.
And Mira heard a voice inside her own mind.
Welcome home, Mira.
Then everything went black.
