The Man Who Stole Tomorrow

Chapter 3

The Man Who Stole Tomorrow

The Echo Beyond Orion · July 21, 2026

Adrian woke to the sound of rain.

For several seconds, he didn’t move.

He simply listened.

Rain.

Real rain.

Not the artificial sound generated by a spaceship.

Not the recycled water of a colony.

Real rain.

It tapped against glass somewhere nearby.

Adrian opened his eyes.

He was lying on a narrow bed inside a small room.

The walls were white.

The ceiling was low.

A single window stood beside him.

Beyond it…

A city.

Not the enormous futuristic city he had seen before.

This one was older.

Darker.

Broken.

Adrian slowly sat up.

His head was pounding.

He remembered the Gate.

The woman.

Elena.

Cael.

Then the explosion.

He immediately stood.

“Elena!”

The door opened.

A man walked inside.

He was tall.

Perhaps fifty years old.

His hair was completely white.

He wore a simple black coat.

“You’re awake.”

Adrian stepped backward.

“Where is she?”

The man stopped.

“Who?”

“Elena.”

The man’s expression changed.

“She’s not here.”

“Where is my son?”

“Your son?”

“Cael.”

The man stared at him.

Then he smiled.

“You’re still remembering.”

Adrian’s hand moved toward his weapon.

The man noticed.

“You won’t need that.”

“Who are you?”

“My name is Dr. Elias Venn.”

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

“Are you one of the Architects?”

The doctor laughed.

“No.”

“Then what are you?”

“A survivor.”

Adrian looked around.

“Where am I?”

“Safe.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

The doctor walked toward the window.

“This is the last city.”

Adrian froze.

“Last city?”

“On Earth.”

Adrian looked through the window.

The streets were almost empty.

Buildings stood damaged.

Smoke rose from the horizon.

The sky was gray.

“What happened?”

Dr. Venn looked at him.

“You happened.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

“What?”

The doctor turned.

“Welcome to 2184.”

Adrian stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I was in 2179.”

“Five years ago.”

“The Gate…”

“Moved you.”

“Where?”

“Five years into the future.”

Adrian looked outside again.

“Where is everyone?”

Dr. Venn’s expression became cold.

“Dead.”

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

“Everyone?”

“Almost.”

“What happened?”

The doctor looked at him.

“You happened.”

Adrian shook his head.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“Explain.”

Dr. Venn walked toward a table.

A holographic display appeared.

Images filled the air.

Earth.

Cities.

Oceans.

Then destruction.

Adrian watched in horror.

A massive energy wave moved across the planet.

Cities disappeared.

Oceans boiled.

The atmosphere turned red.

Millions of ships fled Earth.

Adrian whispered:

“What is that?”

“The Collapse.”

“When?”

“2179.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

“The same year…”

“The same day you arrived.”

Adrian turned toward him.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

Dr. Venn smiled.

“Time rarely does.”

Adrian stared at the hologram.

“How did I cause this?”

“You didn’t.”

“Then why are you blaming me?”

“Because the Architects are.”

“That’s different.”

“Is it?”

Dr. Venn touched the display.

The image changed.

A young Adrian appeared.

Standing beside a machine.

Adrian froze.

“What is that?”

“You.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Adrian stepped closer.

The image showed him.

But this Adrian looked different.

Older.

Tired.

Desperate.

Beside him stood Elena.

And between them…

A small child.

Cael.

Adrian couldn’t breathe.

“When was this?”

“2174.”

“Five years after my disappearance.”

“Correct.”

Adrian looked at Dr. Venn.

“That’s impossible.”

“Not anymore.”

Adrian watched the recording.

The older version of himself was speaking.

His voice echoed through the room.

“We have only one chance.”

Elena stood beside him.

“You said that last time.”

“And I was right.”

“Adrian, this isn’t a solution.”

“It’s the only one.”

“You’re going to destroy everything.”

“I know.”

Adrian stepped backward.

The recording continued.

Older Adrian looked at the camera.

“If anyone finds this…”

He paused.

“Don’t trust me.”

The recording ended.

Adrian stared.

“Why would I say that?”

Dr. Venn answered:

“Because you knew what you were going to become.”

Adrian turned.

“What did I become?”

Dr. Venn didn’t answer.

Instead, the room door opened.

A woman entered.

Adrian froze.

Elena.

She looked exactly as he remembered.

Silver hair.

Blue eyes.

A face he had loved for years.

“Elena.”

She smiled.

“Hello, Adrian.”

Adrian ran toward her.

She caught him.

For a moment, he forgot everything.

The future.

The Architects.

The Gate.

The Collapse.

All of it.

He simply held her.

“You came back.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I never left.”

Adrian pulled away.

“What does that mean?”

She touched his face.

“You’re finally awake.”

Adrian frowned.

“Awake from what?”

Elena looked at Dr. Venn.

The doctor silently left the room.

Adrian watched him disappear.

Then turned back.

“Tell me the truth.”

Elena sighed.

“You aren’t ready.”

“I’ve heard that too many times.”

“Adrian—”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“I’ve spent eleven years believing you were dead.”

“I know.”

“I heard your voice in the darkness.”

“I know.”

“I found out I have a son.”

“I know.”

“I’ve seen the future.”

“I know.”

“I’ve seen myself.”

Elena became silent.

Adrian’s voice became softer.

“Who am I?”

Elena looked into his eyes.

“The answer isn’t simple.”

“Then give me the complicated one.”

She smiled sadly.

“You are the man who tried to save humanity.”

Adrian waited.

“And failed.”

The door opened again.

This time…

Cael entered.

Adrian immediately moved toward him.

“Cael.”

His son stopped.

For several seconds, they stared at each other.

Then Cael smiled.

“Father.”

Adrian laughed.

“Stop calling me that.”

“Why?”

“It still sounds strange.”

Cael walked closer.

“You’ll get used to it.”

“I don’t think I will.”

Cael smiled.

“You’ve been saying that for five years.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

Cael’s smile disappeared.

Adrian looked at Elena.

“What did he say?”

She looked away.

“Cael.”

“Tell him.”

Adrian’s heart began beating faster.

“Tell me what?”

Cael looked at him.

“You’ve been here before.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

“You have.”

“I’ve never been to this city.”

“Not this city.”

Cael stepped closer.

“This time.”

Silence.

Adrian felt dizzy.

“What does that mean?”

Cael raised his hand.

The crescent mark glowed.

Adrian’s mark responded.

The room filled with light.

Images appeared.

Adrian saw himself.

Standing in the same room.

Years ago.

Talking to Cael.

But Cael was a child.

Four years old.

Adrian watched the memory.

He was kneeling beside the boy.

“Will you remember me?”

Young Cael nodded.

“You are my father.”

Adrian’s memory-self smiled.

“Good.”

“Are you leaving?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I have to save the world.”

Young Cael frowned.

“Can I come?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m afraid.”

“Of what?”

Adrian looked at his son.

“Of becoming someone you hate.”

The memory disappeared.

Adrian stared.

“That happened.”

Cael nodded.

“You were here.”

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“Then why don’t I remember?”

“Because you weren’t supposed to.”

“Who erased my memory?”

Elena whispered:

“You did.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

“You erased your own memories.”

“Why?”

“To protect yourself.”

“From what?”

She looked at him.

“From the truth.”

Adrian stepped backward.

“Stop saying that.”

“Adrian.”

“Stop!”

The lights flickered.

The entire building shook.

Cael turned toward the window.

“They found us.”

Dr. Venn’s voice came through the communication system.

“Everyone to the underground shelter.”

Elena grabbed Adrian’s hand.

“Come on.”

“Who found us?”

“The Architects.”

Adrian looked outside.

The sky had changed.

Black clouds covered the city.

Something enormous moved above them.

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

“That’s not a ship.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“What is it?”

“A city.”

Adrian stared.

The object was massive.

A floating structure larger than a continent.

Thousands of towers hung beneath it.

Millions of lights moved across its surface.

It was an entire civilization.

Flying above Earth.

Cael looked at his father.

“The Architects don’t travel in ships.”

Adrian watched the enormous structure.

“They travel in worlds.”

They reached the underground shelter.

Hundreds of people were already there.

Children.

Scientists.

Soldiers.

Old men.

Women.

The last survivors of Earth.

Adrian looked around.

“How many?”

Dr. Venn answered.

“Twenty-seven thousand.”

Adrian stared.

“That’s all?”

“Yes.”

He looked at the people.

Twenty-seven thousand.

Out of billions.

His heart sank.

“Where are the rest?”

Dr. Venn looked at him.

“You’re looking at them.”

The lights went out.

A terrible sound shook the shelter.

People screamed.

Dr. Venn shouted:

“Stay calm!”

The walls began shaking.

Adrian grabbed Elena.

“What’s happening?”

“They’re attacking.”

“Why?”

Dr. Venn looked at him.

“Because they want the Gate.”

Adrian frowned.

“The Gate is gone.”

“No.”

Dr. Venn pointed at him.

“You are the Gate.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

“The Gate isn’t a machine.”

Dr. Venn’s voice became quiet.

“It’s you.”

Adrian stared.

The crescent mark on his hand began glowing.

Elena grabbed him.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because he’s lying.”

Dr. Venn turned.

“Elena.”

She stepped forward.

“You know what he is.”

Dr. Venn smiled.

“Yes.”

“What is he?”

The doctor looked at Adrian.

“He’s the first successful human time traveler.”

Adrian stared.

“That’s what you said.”

“No.”

Dr. Venn shook his head.

“He’s more than that.”

Adrian felt cold.

“What?”

The doctor pointed toward the ceiling.

“The Architects didn’t build the Gate.”

“Then who did?”

Dr. Venn looked at Elena.

“She did.”

Adrian turned toward Elena.

She became pale.

“Elena?”

She didn’t answer.

“Did you build the Gate?”

“Adrian…”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Adrian stepped away.

“Why?”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“To bring you back.”

“From where?”

“The future.”

Adrian shook his head.

“I was already here.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“You were dead.”

Adrian froze.

“You died in 2167.”

“I know.”

“But your consciousness survived.”

“Where?”

“Inside the Gate.”

Adrian stared.

Elena continued.

“I spent five years trying to find you.”

“Then I found you.”

“Where?”

“At the beginning of time.”

Adrian couldn’t breathe.

Elena touched his chest.

“I found your consciousness.”

“Then what?”

“I brought you back.”

Adrian looked at his hands.

“That’s why I’m an Echo.”

“Yes.”

“Then who was the man I saw?”

Elena hesitated.

“Which one?”

“The older me.”

“The one from the screen.”

“Yes.”

Elena whispered:

“That’s you.”

Adrian stepped backward.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

“He tried to destroy the Gate.”

“Why?”

“Because he discovered what it was doing.”

Adrian’s heart raced.

“What was it doing?”

Elena looked at Cael.

Cael stepped forward.

“The Gate wasn’t sending people through time.”

Adrian stared.

“Then what?”

Cael looked toward the ceiling.

“It was bringing something back.”

The shelter shook.

A massive explosion rocked the building.

People screamed.

The lights returned.

Red emergency lights filled the room.

Dr. Venn shouted:

“Everyone move!”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“What did you bring back?”

Elena didn’t answer.

“Elena!”

She finally whispered:

“Your future.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

Elena looked terrified.

“The Gate was created from your memories.”

“Your memories became the bridge between timelines.”

“Every time you traveled…”

“You changed the future.”

Adrian understood.

“The signal.”

Elena nodded.

“I sent it.”

“But I heard my own voice.”

“Because you sent it too.”

Adrian looked at Cael.

“The Architects.”

Cael nodded.

“They followed the signal.”

Adrian suddenly understood everything.

The signal.

The Gate.

The Architects.

The Collapse.

They weren’t separate events.

They were one chain.

He had traveled into the future.

The future had sent him back.

He had created the Gate.

The Gate had created the signal.

The signal had brought the Architects.

And the Architects had destroyed Earth.

Adrian whispered:

“I caused the Collapse.”

Elena stepped closer.

“No.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Yes.”

“No.”

“You said it yourself.”

“I was wrong.”

“How?”

“Because the Collapse hasn’t happened yet.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

Elena pointed toward the ceiling.

“The year is 2184.”

Adrian’s eyes widened.

“The Collapse…”

“Is happening now.”

The shelter shook violently.

A deep sound echoed above them.

Something was approaching.

Dr. Venn looked at the screen.

His face became pale.

“That’s impossible.”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

The doctor stared at the display.

“The Architects aren’t attacking.”

“Then what are they doing?”

Dr. Venn whispered:

“They’re leaving.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Why?”

The screen showed the enormous floating city moving away from Earth.

Every ship was departing.

Every Architect was retreating.

Adrian looked at Elena.

“What’s happening?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Then the shelter doors opened.

A soldier ran inside.

“Commander!”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

The soldier was breathing heavily.

“There’s someone outside.”

“Who?”

The soldier looked frightened.

“A woman.”

Adrian felt a strange chill.

“What woman?”

The soldier swallowed.

“She looks exactly like Elena.”

Silence.

Adrian looked at Elena.

Her face had gone completely white.

“That’s impossible.”

The soldier shook his head.

“She says she knows you.”

Adrian reached for his weapon.

“Where is she?”

“Outside.”

Adrian walked toward the exit.

Elena grabbed him.

“Don’t.”

“Why?”

“Because she isn’t me.”

Adrian stared.

“Who is she?”

Elena whispered:

“The woman from the Gate.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

The door opened.

A woman stood outside.

Silver hair.

Silver eyes.

A face identical to Elena.

But there was something different about her.

She was smiling.

The woman looked at Adrian.

“Hello.”

Adrian raised his weapon.

“Who are you?”

She smiled.

“You already know.”

“Tell me.”

She stepped closer.

“I am Elena.”

The real Elena moved beside Adrian.

“No.”

The woman laughed.

“Still pretending?”

Adrian looked between them.

Two identical women.

One was Elena.

The other…

Something else.

The stranger looked at Cael.

“Hello, son.”

Cael raised his weapon.

“You’re not my mother.”

The woman smiled.

“Not yet.”

Adrian froze.

“What does that mean?”

The woman looked at him.

“It means you haven’t created me.”

Adrian’s heart began racing.

“Created you?”

She nodded.

“Not yet.”

The world seemed to stop.

The woman stepped closer.

“I am the future you.”

Adrian stared.

“You’re not me.”

She smiled.

“Not yet.”

She looked at Elena.

“You will hate me.”

Elena whispered:

“I already do.”

The woman laughed.

Then she looked at Adrian.

“You have two choices.”

“Which are?”

“Come with me.”

“And the second?”

“Stay with her.”

Adrian tightened his grip.

“What happens if I stay?”

The woman smiled.

“Humanity dies.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“And if I go?”

The woman’s expression became serious.

“You save everyone.”

Adrian didn’t answer.

The woman stepped backward.

“Choose quickly.”

“Why?”

“Because the Architects are not running from Earth.”

She looked toward the sky.

“They’re running from something else.”

Adrian looked up.

The clouds were moving.

Something enormous was descending from space.

Not a ship.

Not a city.

A planet.

A dark planet.

Adrian stared.

The woman whispered:

“The real enemy has arrived.”

The planet opened.

A massive red eye appeared.

Everyone in the shelter screamed.

Elena grabbed Adrian’s hand.

Cael grabbed the other.

Adrian looked at them.

His family.

His past.

His future.

Then he looked at the woman.

His possible future.

He finally understood.

The Architects had never been the enemy.

They had been afraid.

And whatever they feared…

Was now coming to Earth.

Adrian raised his weapon.

“I choose neither.”

The woman smiled.

“Interesting.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“I choose my own future.”

The woman stared.

For the first time…

She looked afraid.

Adrian turned toward Elena and Cael.

“Stay behind me.”

Cael smiled.

“You’re protecting us again?”

“Yes.”

Elena looked at him.

“Adrian…”

He held her hand.

“I’m done running.”

The dark planet moved closer.

The sky began to burn.

And from somewhere beyond the stars…

A voice spoke.

A voice so powerful that every human on Earth heard it.

“ADRIAN VALE.”

Adrian looked up.

The voice continued.

“YOU HAVE BEEN DEAD FOR SEVENTEEN YEARS.”

Adrian froze.

“WHY DO YOU CONTINUE TO LIVE?”

The woman from the future smiled.

Elena tightened her grip on Adrian’s hand.

Cael raised his weapon.

Adrian looked at the sky.

Then he answered.

“Because I haven’t finished yet.”

The red eye opened wider.

The planet began descending.

And for the first time since humanity had reached the stars…

The entire universe seemed to hold its breath.
