The Last Secret of Willowmere

Chapter 6

The Last Secret of Willowmere

The Mystery of the Vanishing Mayor · July 21, 2026

For three terrible seconds, nobody moved.

Elliot stood in the middle of the empty street.

His eyes were glowing.

His voice had changed.

And everyone around him was staring as if he had suddenly grown two extra heads.

Clara was the first to move.

She stepped toward him.

“Elliot?”

He didn’t answer.

“Elliot, look at me.”

His head slowly turned.

His eyes were no longer glowing.

They were normal.

He blinked.

“Clara?”

She rushed toward him.

“You’re back!”

Elliot looked around.

“What happened?”

Clara hugged him.

“You scared me!”

Elliot looked confused.

“Why?”

“You said you weren’t Elliot anymore!”

Elliot frowned.

“I did?”

“Yes!”

“Why?”

“I don’t know!”

Elliot looked at Thomas.

Thomas looked terrified.

The mayor looked terrified.

Victor Blackwood looked delighted.

Elliot pointed at Victor.

“Why is that man smiling?”

Victor laughed.

“Because the awakening has begun.”

Elliot looked at Clara.

“What awakening?”

Victor raised his hands.

“The Heart has chosen its new master.”

Elliot stared.

“Again with the Heart.”

Clara grabbed his hand.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Victor smiled.

“She can’t protect you forever.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Victor looked at him.

“You’ve been hiding the truth for seven years.”

Thomas’s expression hardened.

“To protect them.”

“No.”

Victor smiled.

“To protect yourself.”

Elliot looked between them.

“Can everyone stop speaking in mysterious sentences?”

Nobody answered.

Elliot threw his hands into the air.

“Fine. I’ll solve it myself.”

He turned toward the underground staircase.

Clara grabbed him.

“Where are you going?”

“Down.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because every time we go down somewhere, something terrible happens.”

Elliot thought about this.

“That’s actually a very strong argument.”

Victor laughed.

“The final chamber is waiting.”

Elliot looked at him.

“Why do you want me to go there?”

Victor smiled.

“Because you’re the only person who can open it.”

“And then?”

“You’ll understand.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It will be.”

Elliot looked at Clara.

“Do you trust him?”

“No.”

“Good.”

He turned to Thomas.

“Do you trust him?”

Thomas shook his head.

“Definitely not.”

Elliot looked at the mayor.

“What about you?”

The mayor sighed.

“Not even slightly.”

Elliot nodded.

“Excellent.”

He pointed at Victor.

“Then we’re all in agreement.”

Victor laughed.

“You’re making a mistake.”

“Probably.”

Elliot grabbed Clara’s hand.

“Come on.”

They ran.

Thomas followed.

The mayor followed Thomas.

Victor watched them disappear.

Then he smiled.

“They’ll come back.”

The staircase beneath Willowmere seemed endless.

Elliot and Clara ran downward.

Thomas followed closely.

The mayor was behind him.

“Can someone explain why we’re going underground again?” Elliot asked.

Thomas shouted:

“Because it’s the only way to stop the Blackwoods!”

Elliot looked back.

“How?”

Thomas hesitated.

“That’s what we’re going to find out.”

Elliot groaned.

“That’s not very reassuring.”

They reached the bottom.

A massive door stood before them.

Unlike the previous doors…

This one was covered in gold.

At its center was the symbol of the Finch family.

Elliot stared.

“That’s our family symbol.”

Clara nodded.

Thomas looked away.

Elliot noticed.

“Thomas.”

“What?”

“You knew.”

Thomas didn’t answer.

“You knew this door existed.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Because your parents told me not to.”

Elliot stepped closer.

“Why?”

Thomas finally looked at him.

“Because they knew you would come here.”

Clara frowned.

“How?”

Thomas shook his head.

“They knew the Blackwoods would return.”

“And they knew we’d stop them?”

“No.”

Thomas looked at Elliot.

“They knew you would have to choose.”

Elliot’s face became serious.

“Choose what?”

Thomas looked at the golden door.

“Yourself…”

He paused.

“…or everyone else.”

The door suddenly opened.

Elliot stepped inside.

The chamber beyond was enormous.

At its center floated a glowing golden stone.

The real Heart.

The original Heart of Blackwood.

It was beautiful.

And terrifying.

Around it were hundreds of black shadows.

The shadows moved like people.

Elliot stared.

“Who are they?”

Thomas whispered:

“The Blackwoods.”

Clara stepped forward.

“All of them?”

Thomas nodded.

“Every person who ever used the Heart.”

Elliot looked at the shadows.

“They’re trapped.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the Heart doesn’t give life.”

Thomas looked at the golden stone.

“It takes it.”

Elliot finally understood.

“The Blackwoods weren’t immortal.”

“No.”

“They were trapped inside the Heart.”

“Yes.”

“Then Victor wants to free them.”

Thomas nodded.

“And if he does?”

Thomas looked at him.

“They’ll take the lives of everyone in Willowmere.”

Silence.

Elliot looked at Clara.

“That’s bad.”

Clara nodded.

“Very.”

The mayor stepped forward.

“There’s only one way to stop them.”

Elliot turned.

“You.”

The mayor shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward the Heart.

“Your family.”

Elliot stared.

“My family?”

“Your ancestors created the first seal.”

“How?”

The mayor looked at the golden Heart.

“They gave their lives.”

Clara stepped forward.

“Then we need another seal.”

The mayor nodded.

“Yes.”

Elliot looked at her.

“Clara…”

She smiled sadly.

“No.”

“What?”

“You can’t do it.”

“Why?”

“Because the Heart chose you.”

Elliot shook his head.

“I won’t let you sacrifice yourself.”

Clara looked at him.

“You think I want to?”

Elliot didn’t answer.

She stepped closer.

“I’m scared.”

Elliot stared.

“I know.”

“But I’m more scared of watching you die.”

Elliot’s voice broke.

“Clara.”

She touched his hand.

“We’ve spent seven years without our parents.”

“We can still save them.”

“Maybe.”

“But if we don’t stop the Heart…”

She looked toward the shadows.

“…no one will survive.”

Suddenly…

The chamber shook.

Victor entered.

Behind him came the Blackwoods.

The mayor raised his weapon.

Victor smiled.

“Enough hiding.”

Elliot stepped forward.

“What do you want?”

Victor pointed at the Heart.

“Freedom.”

“Why?”

“Because I want my family back.”

Elliot looked at the shadows.

“Those people?”

Victor nodded.

“They were my family.”

“They killed people.”

“They made mistakes.”

“They murdered thousands.”

Victor’s face became cold.

“They were my family.”

Clara stepped forward.

“And what about everyone else?”

Victor looked at her.

“They don’t matter.”

Elliot shook his head.

“Then you don’t deserve to have them back.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“You sound like your father.”

Elliot froze.

“What?”

Victor smiled.

“Your father said the same thing.”

Elliot stepped closer.

“You knew him.”

“Of course.”

“Where is he?”

Victor pointed toward the shadows.

“There.”

Elliot turned.

One shadow stepped forward.

It took the shape of a man.

Elliot’s father.

His face was clear.

His eyes were kind.

“Elliot.”

Elliot’s heart broke.

“Dad.”

His father smiled.

“I’m sorry.”

Elliot walked toward him.

Clara followed.

Their mother appeared beside him.

“Clara.”

Clara began crying.

“Mom.”

Their parents stood together.

For the first time in seven years…

The family was together.

Elliot reached for his father.

His hand passed through him.

He stopped.

His father smiled sadly.

“We can’t leave.”

“Why?”

“Because we are part of the seal.”

Elliot looked toward the Heart.

“Then I’ll take your place.”

His father immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re not the key.”

Elliot froze.

“What?”

His father looked at Clara.

“She is.”

Clara stopped breathing.

Elliot turned.

“Clara?”

Their mother smiled through her tears.

“The Heart chose her because she has the blood of the original guardian.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

Her mother nodded.

“Yes.”

Elliot looked at Thomas.

“You knew.”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

Elliot became furious.

“Everyone knew!”

Thomas lowered his head.

“We were trying to protect you.”

“By lying to us?”

“Yes.”

“That doesn’t work!”

Clara stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Elliot turned.

She looked at him.

“There’s no time.”

The Heart began to shake.

Victor shouted:

“Now!”

The Blackwood shadows rushed toward the Heart.

The golden stone began turning black.

The mayor attacked Victor.

Thomas fought the others.

The chamber exploded into chaos.

Clara stood before the Heart.

Elliot grabbed her hand.

“Don’t.”

She looked at him.

“I have to.”

“No.”

“Elliot.”

“No!”

“I can stop them.”

“You’ll die.”

“Maybe.”

“Clara!”

She smiled.

“At least this time…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“…I’ll know why.”

Elliot shook his head.

“You don’t have to do this alone.”

Clara stared at him.

“What do you mean?”

Elliot looked toward their parents.

Then toward the Heart.

Then at Thomas.

“Maybe the seal doesn’t need one person.”

Thomas froze.

“What are you thinking?”

Elliot looked at the golden stone.

“The original seal was created by our family.”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why can’t the whole family do it?”

Thomas stared.

“What family?”

Elliot pointed.

“Our parents.”

Clara looked at him.

“They’re already part of the Heart.”

“Exactly.”

Their mother understood.

“Elliot…”

“Mom.”

She smiled.

“You’re just like your father.”

Elliot laughed sadly.

“Is that good?”

His father smiled.

“Usually.”

Elliot turned toward Thomas.

“What happens if we combine the seal?”

Thomas’s eyes widened.

“It could work.”

Clara stared.

“But how?”

Thomas looked toward the Heart.

“Your parents are already connected.”

“Then what?”

“You and Clara must complete the seal.”

Elliot looked at Clara.

“Together.”

She nodded.

Victor suddenly appeared.

“No!”

He rushed toward them.

The mayor blocked him.

Victor attacked.

The mayor fell.

Thomas ran forward.

But the Blackwood shadows surrounded him.

Elliot and Clara stood before the Heart.

The golden stone began to glow.

Clara reached out.

Elliot reached out too.

Their hands touched the Heart.

Pain exploded through them.

Elliot screamed.

Clara screamed.

The chamber disappeared.

Elliot found himself standing in darkness.

Clara was beside him.

“Where are we?”

“I don’t know.”

A voice answered.

Their mother.

“You are inside the Heart.”

Elliot looked around.

“Mom?”

Their parents appeared.

This time…

They looked peaceful.

Their mother smiled.

“The seal can only be completed by choice.”

Elliot frowned.

“What choice?”

Their father stepped forward.

“One of you must stay.”

Clara immediately stepped forward.

“I will.”

Elliot grabbed her.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Elliot.”

“No.”

“Someone has to.”

“Then both of us.”

Their mother shook her head.

“Only one.”

Elliot looked at Clara.

“No.”

Clara began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

She stepped toward the Heart.

Elliot grabbed her.

“Don’t.”

She looked at him.

“I love you.”

Elliot froze.

Clara smiled through tears.

“You’re my brother.”

Elliot’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

“I’ve spent my whole life protecting you.”

“And I’ve spent mine protecting you.”

She laughed.

“You’re terrible at it.”

“I know.”

She touched his face.

“That’s why I have to do this.”

“No.”

“Elliot…”

“No!”

He grabbed her hand.

“Think!”

“About what?”

“The Heart.”

“What about it?”

“It feeds on sacrifice.”

Clara stopped.

Elliot suddenly understood.

“That’s what the Blackwoods did.”

His parents stared.

“The Heart takes life from someone who sacrifices themselves.”

His father nodded.

“Yes.”

Elliot looked at Clara.

“Then we don’t sacrifice.”

“What do we do?”

“We refuse.”

Their mother stared.

“What?”

Elliot looked toward the darkness.

“The Heart only works because people choose to give themselves to it.”

Clara understood.

“So we don’t give it anything.”

“Exactly.”

The Heart began to shake.

The Blackwood shadows appeared.

Victor’s voice echoed:

“You cannot escape.”

Elliot shouted:

“We’re not escaping!”

He grabbed Clara’s hand.

“We’re choosing.”

The Heart screamed.

The shadows rushed toward them.

Elliot and Clara held hands.

Their parents stood behind them.

“We choose life.”

The Heart exploded.

White light filled the chamber.

The shadows disappeared.

Victor screamed.

“No!”

The Blackwood family vanished.

The Heart cracked.

Then…

It shattered.

Elliot opened his eyes.

He was lying on the ground.

Clara was beside him.

“Clara?”

She opened her eyes.

“Elliot?”

They stared at each other.

Then laughed.

The chamber was silent.

The Heart was gone.

The Blackwood shadows were gone.

Victor was gone.

Thomas stood nearby.

The mayor was sitting against a wall.

Elliot looked around.

“Did we win?”

Thomas smiled.

“I think so.”

Elliot looked at Clara.

“Are we alive?”

“Yes.”

“That’s good.”

He looked at Thomas.

“Are you alive?”

“Yes.”

“That’s less good.”

Thomas rolled his eyes.

Clara laughed.

Then Elliot noticed something.

Two figures stood behind them.

Their parents.

Real.

Alive.

Elliot froze.

“Mom?”

His mother smiled.

“Hello.”

Elliot ran toward her.

He hugged her.

Clara joined them.

Their father wrapped his arms around all three.

For a long moment…

Nobody spoke.

Seven years of loneliness disappeared in one embrace.

Then Elliot whispered:

“Why didn’t you come home?”

His father looked at him.

“We couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“We were trapped.”

“But now?”

His mother smiled.

“The Heart is gone.”

Elliot looked around.

“Completely?”

Thomas nodded.

“The Blackwood curse is over.”

Elliot sighed.

“Good.”

Then he remembered something.

“The mayor!”

Everyone turned.

Mayor Hargrove slowly stood.

Elliot pointed.

“You’re the reason this happened.”

The mayor looked guilty.

“Yes.”

“You kidnapped yourself.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to us.”

“Yes.”

“You used us.”

“Yes.”

“You released an ancient evil.”

“Yes.”

Elliot nodded.

“You’re a terrible mayor.”

The mayor sighed.

“I know.”

Clara crossed her arms.

“Why did you do it?”

The mayor looked at Elliot’s parents.

“I thought I could destroy the Blackwoods.”

His voice became quiet.

“But I became obsessed.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“You nearly destroyed the town.”

“I know.”

The mayor looked at Elliot.

“I’m sorry.”

Elliot stared at him.

Then sighed.

“Fine.”

The mayor looked surprised.

“Fine?”

“Yes.”

“You’re forgiving me?”

“No.”

“Oh.”

“I just don’t want to spend another week in this underground nightmare.”

The mayor smiled weakly.

“Fair enough.”

Three weeks later…

Willowmere looked completely different.

The Blackwood mansion had been abandoned.

The underground tunnels were sealed.

The old mine was closed forever.

The mysterious railway station became a museum.

And the mayor…

Resigned.

Apparently, kidnapping yourself was considered a serious violation of municipal regulations.

Elliot became famous.

He hated it.

Clara became famous too.

She loved it.

Thomas disappeared.

Nobody knew where he went.

Although Elliot suspected he was hiding in a library somewhere.

As for Elliot’s parents…

They stayed in Willowmere.

They spent every day trying to repair the seven years they had lost.

It wasn’t easy.

But they tried.

And that was enough.

One sunny afternoon, Elliot sat outside the town café.

Clara sat opposite him.

A newspaper lay on the table.

The headline read:

WILLOWMERE FINALLY FREE FROM BLACKWOOD CURSE

Elliot folded the newspaper.

“Do you know what I’ve learned?”

Clara looked at him.

“What?”

“Never investigate anything.”

Clara laughed.

“You’re terrible at following your own advice.”

“That’s true.”

A waiter arrived.

“Anything else?”

Elliot shook his head.

“No.”

Clara looked at him.

“Are you sure?”

Elliot nodded.

Then he noticed something.

A small black envelope lay beneath his chair.

He picked it up.

Clara’s smile disappeared.

“What is that?”

Elliot opened it.

Inside was a piece of paper.

Only one sentence was written.

THE HEART IS GONE.

Below it…

BUT THE GAME IS NOT OVER.

Elliot stared.

Clara leaned closer.

“Who sent it?”

Elliot turned the paper over.

There was no name.

No symbol.

Nothing.

Then a small object fell from the envelope.

A golden key.

Elliot stared at it.

Clara whispered:

“Another mystery.”

Elliot slowly pushed the key back into the envelope.

“No.”

Clara raised an eyebrow.

“No?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m retired.”

“You’ve never had a job.”

“Exactly.”

Clara laughed.

Elliot stood.

They walked away from the café.

Behind them…

A man watched from across the street.

He wore an ordinary coat.

His face was hidden.

He opened his hand.

Inside was a small piece of black stone.

The remains of the Heart.

The man smiled.

Then disappeared into the crowd.

Six months later…

Elliot was sitting peacefully at home.

He had finally achieved his dream.

No mysteries.

No secret tunnels.

No ancient curses.

No disappearing mayors.

Just peace.

Then someone knocked on the door.

Elliot froze.

He looked at Clara.

Clara looked at him.

“Don’t.”

Elliot whispered:

“I’m not moving.”

Another knock.

KNOCK. KNOCK.

Elliot whispered:

“Maybe they’ll go away.”

Clara nodded.

They waited.

Another knock.

KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.

Elliot sighed.

“I hate people.”

Clara stood.

“Stay here.”

“Where are you going?”

“To open the door.”

“Why?”

“Because someone has to.”

“Why can’t it be someone else?”

“Because we’re the only people in the house.”

Clara opened the door.

A young man stood outside.

He held a large suitcase.

“Are you Clara Finch?”

“Yes.”

“Is Elliot Finch here?”

Elliot immediately hid behind the sofa.

Clara looked at him.

“Yes.”

The stranger stepped inside.

“I need your help.”

Elliot shouted:

“No!”

The stranger blinked.

Clara sighed.

“Ignore him.”

The stranger placed the suitcase on the table.

He opened it.

Inside…

Were dozens of mysterious objects.

Ancient maps.

Strange keys.

Old photographs.

And one black stone.

Elliot slowly stood.

“What is that?”

The stranger smiled.

“I think you already know.”

Clara stared.

“The Heart.”

The stranger nodded.

“Not the Heart.”

He picked up the stone.

“A piece of it.”

Elliot groaned.

“No.”

Clara looked at him.

“What?”

“No more.”

The stranger smiled.

“There’s a new mystery.”

Elliot shook his head.

“Absolutely not.”

Clara smiled.

“Come on.”

“No.”

“Elliot.”

“No.”

She grabbed his arm.

“You’re coming.”

Elliot sighed.

“Fine.”

The stranger smiled.

“Excellent.”

Elliot pointed at him.

“But I have one condition.”

“What?”

“We don’t go underground.”

The stranger paused.

“Well…”

Elliot’s eyes widened.

“No.”

Clara laughed.

The stranger smiled.

“Then I suppose we should start with the basement.”

Elliot screamed.

“WHY IS IT ALWAYS THE BASEMENT?”

And somewhere far away…

A black stone began to glow.

The mystery of the Vanishing Mayor was over.

But Willowmere…

Had never truly been a quiet town.
