THE RULES OF OUR MARRIAGE
THE ENEMY I COULDN’T STOP LOVING · July 23, 2026
The first night of their marriage was not filled with dreams.
It was filled with silence.
Seraphina sat beside the window in the bedroom that had once belonged to Adrian’s grandmother, staring at the rain sliding down the glass.
She had been married for exactly six hours.
Six hours.
And somehow, those six hours had already changed the shape of her entire life.
She looked down at her left hand.
The wedding ring was simple.
A thin band of platinum.
No diamonds.
No decoration.
Nothing beautiful about it.
And yet…
It felt heavier than every piece of jewelry she had ever worn.
Because it wasn’t just a ring.
It was a promise she had never wanted to make.
A promise made between two enemies.
A promise created from desperation.
A promise that had nothing to do with love.
At least…
That was what she kept telling herself.
Seraphina pulled the ring from her finger.
She stared at it.
Then she placed it on the table.
“One year.”
She whispered the words aloud.
“Just one year.”
After that, she would leave.
She would walk away from Adrian Blackwood.
She would return to her own life.
And the Blackwood name would disappear from hers.
That was the plan.
Simple.
Clean.
Safe.
But then she remembered his face.
The way he had looked at her after the kiss.
The way his hand had rested against her waist.
The way his voice had changed when he told her he would let her go if she discovered his family had destroyed hers.
Seraphina closed her eyes.
Why did that matter?
Why did his words remain inside her mind?
She hated him.
She had to.
Because if she didn’t…
Then everything she believed about her life would begin to fall apart.
A soft knock came at the door.
Seraphina looked up.
“Who is it?”
“Me.”
Adrian.
Her heart immediately reacted.
She hated that.
“Come in.”
The door opened.
Adrian entered.
He was no longer wearing the suit from the wedding.
He wore a simple black shirt.
The sleeves were rolled to his elbows.
His hair was slightly disordered.
He looked less like the cold heir of the Blackwood family…
And more like an ordinary man.
That somehow made him more dangerous.
Seraphina looked away.
“What do you want?”
Adrian noticed the ring on the table.
“You took it off.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m going to sleep.”
“You don’t have to remove it.”
“I don’t like it.”
“You’re married.”
“For one year.”
“Still married.”
“Don’t remind me.”
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
“You really hate this.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
She looked at him.
“Why do you keep saying that?”
“Because it makes two of us.”
She frowned.
“Then why did you marry me?”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“I told you.”
“You want the truth about our fathers.”
“That’s part of it.”
“What’s the other part?”
He was silent.
Seraphina stood.
“I’m asking you a question.”
“I know.”
“Then answer.”
Adrian looked at her.
For a moment, something passed through his eyes.
Something she couldn’t understand.
“I needed a way to protect you.”
She froze.
“Protect me?”
“Yes.”
“From whom?”
“Everyone.”
She laughed bitterly.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Is it?”
“You’re the person I need protection from.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Believe me, Seraphina…”
He stepped closer.
“If I wanted to hurt you, you wouldn’t be standing here.”
Her heart stopped.
She looked into his eyes.
There was no anger there.
Only something much darker.
Pain.
“Is that supposed to scare me?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“A warning.”
“From you?”
“From the world.”
She stared at him.
“You’re very mysterious.”
“So are you.”
“I have nothing to hide.”
“Everyone has something to hide.”
“Not me.”
Adrian looked at the photograph lying on the table.
“The Black Rose.”
Seraphina’s expression changed.
“You’re still thinking about it.”
“Of course.”
“Why?”
“Because my father died trying to find out what it meant.”
Adrian looked at her.
“And your father died the same night.”
Seraphina’s stomach tightened.
“Do you think it’s connected?”
“I know it is.”
“How?”
Adrian walked toward the table.
He picked up the photograph.
“Because I found another one.”
“What?”
He turned the photograph around.
There was a second image.
Older.
Damaged.
But clearly visible.
Her father.
Adrian’s father.
And the same mysterious man.
Seraphina stepped closer.
“Where?”
“My father’s safe.”
“You didn’t show me this.”
“I found it after you left.”
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“I didn’t know if I could trust you.”
She stared at him.
“You’re married to me.”
“Exactly.”
The words struck her.
She stepped back.
“Do you regret it?”
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
“Marrying me.”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
Seraphina’s heart skipped.
“Why?”
“Because now I can keep you close.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“That sounds threatening.”
“It wasn’t meant to.”
“Then explain.”
Adrian looked away.
“You have enemies.”
“Everyone has enemies.”
“Not like yours.”
“What does that mean?”
He didn’t answer.
“Adrian.”
He walked toward the door.
“Go to sleep.”
“Don’t walk away.”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
He stopped.
Seraphina crossed her arms.
“You’re impossible.”
“You’re stubborn.”
“You’re arrogant.”
“You’re angry.”
“You’re cold.”
“You’re emotional.”
“You’re—”
She stopped.
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
She couldn’t think of anything.
His lips curved.
“Exactly.”
Seraphina glared.
“I hate you.”
“Goodnight, wife.”
“Don’t call me that.”
He left.
The door closed.
Seraphina stood there.
Then she whispered,
“Goodnight, husband.”
She immediately regretted it.
Because the word sounded far too natural.
The next morning, Seraphina woke to the sound of voices.
She opened her eyes.
For a moment, she forgot where she was.
Then she remembered.
The marriage.
The mansion.
Adrian.
She groaned.
“Perfect.”
She got dressed quickly.
When she entered the dining room, Adrian was already there.
He sat at the long table.
A cup of coffee rested beside him.
He was reading something.
Seraphina stopped.
He looked up.
“Good morning.”
She ignored him.
She sat opposite him.
A servant placed breakfast in front of her.
She looked at Adrian.
“Why are you staring?”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
“I’m thinking.”
“About?”
“How to survive one year with you.”
She smiled.
“That’s easy.”
“How?”
“Ignore me.”
“I tried.”
“And?”
“Didn’t work.”
Her smile disappeared.
Something about the way he said it…
Made her uncomfortable.
She picked up her coffee.
“What’s that?”
Adrian looked at the papers.
“Financial documents.”
“For the company?”
“Yes.”
“Give them to me.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“Why?”
“Because it’s my family’s company.”
“Not anymore.”
Her eyes flashed.
“Careful.”
“About what?”
“You may have bought the debt.”
“Yes.”
“You may have married me.”
“Technically, you married me.”
“Don’t push me.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it.”
She reached for the documents.
Adrian moved them away.
“Seraphina.”
“Give them to me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because you don’t know what you’re looking at.”
She stared at him.
“I studied business.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“What did you study?”
“Business administration.”
“At university?”
“Yes.”
“Which one?”
“Oxford.”
Adrian blinked.
“You went to Oxford?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t I know that?”
“You never asked.”
He stared at her.
Seraphina smiled.
“Still think I’m stupid?”
“I never thought you were stupid.”
“Then why did you say I don’t know what I’m looking at?”
“Because this isn’t a business problem.”
She froze.
“What?”
Adrian pushed the documents toward her.
“Look.”
Seraphina read them.
At first, everything looked normal.
Then she noticed something.
“What is this?”
“Exactly.”
She looked at him.
“The company has been losing money for years.”
“Yes.”
“But not because of debt.”
“No.”
“Someone has been stealing from it.”
Adrian nodded.
“How much?”
“Millions.”
Seraphina’s hands tightened around the papers.
“Who?”
“That’s what I’m trying to find out.”
She looked at him.
“Do you think it’s someone in my family?”
“Maybe.”
“You think my mother stole from us?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
“Someone with access.”
“An employee?”
“Possibly.”
“Or…”
Seraphina stopped.
Adrian watched her.
“What?”
“My uncle.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Your mother’s brother?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He managed the company after my father’s death.”
“Does he still?”
“Yes.”
Adrian leaned back.
“Then we start with him.”
Seraphina stared.
“We?”
Adrian smiled.
“You’re my wife.”
“For one year.”
“Still.”
She rolled her eyes.
“You really like saying that.”
“Yes.”
“I don’t.”
“I know.”
They spent the entire day going through company records.
For the first time since their marriage…
They worked together.
And it was strange.
Seraphina had expected Adrian to be controlling.
Arrogant.
Impossible.
But he wasn’t.
He listened.
He considered her ideas.
He didn’t interrupt.
And when she found something important…
He trusted her.
By evening, they had discovered something.
A series of payments.
Large amounts of money.
Sent to an unknown company.
Every month.
For five years.
Seraphina stared at the screen.
“Do you recognize this name?”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
“Neither do I.”
“Who owns it?”
She clicked on the details.
“Private.”
Adrian leaned closer.
His shoulder touched hers.
Seraphina immediately became aware of him.
His warmth.
His scent.
His breathing.
She moved away.
Adrian noticed.
He didn’t comment.
“Can you find the owner?”
“Maybe.”
She typed quickly.
Then stopped.
“What?”
Adrian looked at her.
“The company was registered twenty years ago.”
“By whom?”
She turned the screen toward him.
He stared.
His face changed.
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
Adrian stood.
“Because that name belongs to a dead man.”
“Who?”
He looked at her.
“Your father.”
Silence.
Seraphina’s blood went cold.
“No.”
Adrian stared at the screen.
“The company was created three months before his death.”
“But why would my father create a secret company?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who was the director?”
“Your father.”
“Then who received the money?”
Adrian looked at the records.
A name appeared.
Seraphina stopped breathing.
Richard Blackwood.
Adrian’s father.
She looked at him.
“Your father.”
Adrian’s expression was unreadable.
“Yes.”
“My father sent money to your father.”
“Apparently.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“But they hated each other.”
“That’s what we were told.”
Seraphina stared at the screen.
The story she had believed her entire life was beginning to collapse.
Her father.
Adrian’s father.
Money.
Secret companies.
The Black Rose.
Everything was connected.
But how?
That evening, they went to the old Blackwood library.
Adrian unlocked a cabinet.
Inside were hundreds of documents.
“My father kept everything.”
Seraphina looked around.
“Why didn’t you search this before?”
“I did.”
“And?”
“Nothing.”
“Maybe you missed something.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Maybe.”
They searched for hours.
Seraphina opened drawer after drawer.
Nothing.
Then she found a small wooden box.
“Adrian.”
He came toward her.
“What?”
She held it up.
“I found this.”
He took the box.
There was no lock.
He opened it.
Inside was a necklace.
A black rose pendant.
Seraphina’s heart stopped.
“The symbol.”
Adrian picked it up.
“It’s the same.”
She touched the pendant.
“Who owned it?”
“I don’t know.”
There was a letter beneath it.
Adrian unfolded it.
The handwriting was old.
Seraphina recognized it immediately.
Her father’s.
She read.
Richard,
If you are reading this, then something has gone terribly wrong.
I never wanted our children to pay for our mistakes.
Keep Adrian safe.
I will protect Seraphina.
One day, they will know the truth.
But until then…
They must remain enemies.
It is the only way to keep them alive.
Seraphina’s hands began shaking.
She looked at Adrian.
He was staring at the letter.
“Read it again.”
“I can’t.”
“Please.”
She read it again.
Then again.
And again.
They must remain enemies.
Seraphina whispered,
“Why?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
“Why would our fathers want us to hate each other?”
“I don’t know.”
“To protect us?”
“Apparently.”
“From whom?”
Adrian looked at the black rose pendant.
“Maybe from the person who killed them.”
A sound came from behind them.
They turned.
The library door was open.
Someone had been standing there.
Seraphina’s heart raced.
“Who is there?”
No answer.
Adrian immediately moved in front of her.
“Stay behind me.”
“I can protect myself.”
“Seraphina.”
His voice was sharp.
She stopped.
They walked toward the doorway.
The hallway was empty.
But something lay on the floor.
A photograph.
Seraphina picked it up.
Her blood ran cold.
It was a picture of her.
Standing outside the mansion.
Taken that morning.
Adrian looked at it.
“Someone is watching you.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
He turned the photograph over.
There were three words.
LEAVE HIM NOW.
Seraphina felt cold.
Adrian took the photograph.
“We need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever sent this knows where you are.”
“And?”
“And they know we’re together.”
“We are married.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
He looked at her.
“They know we’re investigating.”
Seraphina understood.
“Then we’re in danger.”
“Yes.”
She stared at him.
“Are you afraid?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because I’m not alone.”
Her heart stopped.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You are.”
She stared at him.
Then, unexpectedly, she felt something inside her break.
She had spent her entire life believing that she was alone.
Her father was dead.
Her family was broken.
Her mother was afraid.
And now…
The man she had been taught to hate was standing in front of her.
Protecting her.
Not because of the contract.
Not because of the company.
But because he wanted to.
“Adrian.”
“Yes?”
“Why are you protecting me?”
He looked at her.
“Because I promised.”
“When?”
“The night we married.”
“I don’t remember you promising that.”
“I promised myself.”
The words were quiet.
But they struck her harder than anything else.
Seraphina looked away.
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Make me believe you’re a good man.”
His expression changed.
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re supposed to be my enemy.”
Adrian stared at her.
“And if I’m not?”
She looked at him.
Neither moved.
The silence between them became unbearable.
Adrian stepped closer.
Seraphina’s heart raced.
He lifted his hand.
For a moment, she thought he would touch her.
But he stopped.
His fingers remained inches from her cheek.
He lowered his hand.
“Then you’ll have to decide what I am.”
He walked away.
Seraphina stood alone.
Her heart was beating too fast.
She touched her cheek.
He hadn’t touched her.
But somehow…
She could still feel him.
That night, Seraphina couldn’t sleep.
She lay in bed.
The photograph sat beside her.
LEAVE HIM NOW.
She should have been afraid.
She was.
But not of Adrian.
That was the problem.
She was beginning to fear something else.
The possibility that he might actually be the person she needed.
The possibility that her hatred had been built on lies.
And the most dangerous possibility of all…
That her heart was beginning to change.
She closed her eyes.
Then she heard something.
A sound.
A crash.
Seraphina immediately sat up.
She grabbed the lamp.
“Adrian?”
No answer.
She opened the door.
The hallway was dark.
“Adrian?”
Still nothing.
Then she heard footsteps.
Behind her.
She turned.
A shadow moved.
Before she could scream, someone grabbed her.
She fought.
“Let me go!”
A hand covered her mouth.
She bit it.
The person cursed.
Seraphina ran.
But another figure appeared at the end of the hallway.
She froze.
The first man grabbed her again.
Then suddenly…
Adrian appeared.
He moved with terrifying speed.
He attacked the man holding Seraphina.
The second man ran.
Adrian chased him.
Seraphina screamed.
“Adrian!”
He stopped.
The attacker disappeared.
Adrian returned.
His face was furious.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
He grabbed her shoulders.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“Did he hurt you?”
“No.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
For a moment, she saw something.
Fear.
Pure fear.
Not for himself.
For her.
“Adrian.”
He opened his eyes.
“You’re safe.”
“I’m okay.”
“You could have been killed.”
“But I wasn’t.”
“That doesn’t matter.”
“Why?”
He stared at her.
“Because I thought I was going to lose you.”
The words came out before he could stop them.
Silence.
Seraphina stared at him.
Adrian seemed to realize what he had said.
He stepped away.
But she caught his hand.
He stopped.
“Don’t.”
He looked at her.
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t walk away.”
His eyes searched hers.
Seraphina’s voice trembled.
“Just stay.”
Something changed between them.
Adrian slowly turned toward her.
She was still holding his hand.
Neither of them moved.
Then he pulled her closer.
Seraphina’s heart raced.
“Adrian…”
“I know.”
“What are we doing?”
“I don’t know.”
“This isn’t supposed to happen.”
“I know.”
“We hate each other.”
“Do we?”
The question silenced her.
Adrian looked into her eyes.
And for the first time…
Seraphina didn’t see an enemy.
She saw a man.
A lonely man.
A wounded man.
A man who had spent his entire life carrying a family name that had never truly belonged to him.
And suddenly…
She understood him.
Perhaps that was the beginning of love.
Not the moment when your heart races.
Not the moment when someone kisses you.
But the moment when you finally see the pain behind another person’s eyes…
And realize you want to protect it.
Seraphina whispered,
“You’re not supposed to care about me.”
Adrian’s voice was barely audible.
“I know.”
“Then why do you?”
He looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
Her heart broke.
Not because of sadness.
Because of something far more dangerous.
Hope.
She stepped closer.
Adrian’s hands settled carefully around her waist.
This time…
She didn’t move away.
His forehead touched hers.
“Seraphina.”
“Yes?”
“If we do this…”
“What?”
“If I kiss you…”
Her heart stopped.
“What?”
“It changes everything.”
She looked into his eyes.
“Then don’t.”
Adrian waited.
She didn’t move.
“Seraphina.”
“Yes?”
“Tell me to stop.”
She couldn’t.
The words wouldn’t come.
Instead, she whispered,
“I can’t.”
And then he kissed her.
Not like their wedding kiss.
That had been an act.
A performance.
This was different.
This was real.
His hand held her face.
Her fingers tightened around his shirt.
And for one terrifying moment…
Seraphina forgot everything.
The feud.
The families.
The hatred.
The contract.
There was only him.
Only her.
Only the two of them standing in the middle of a dark hallway, discovering something neither had been prepared to feel.
When they finally pulled apart…
Seraphina’s eyes were filled with tears.
Adrian looked at her.
“Tell me you regret it.”
She couldn’t.
“Seraphina.”
“I don’t.”
His eyes closed.
“Neither do I.”
She rested her forehead against his chest.
His arms wrapped around her.
And for the first time in twenty years…
A Vale and a Blackwood stood together.
Not as enemies.
But as two people who were beginning to realize that perhaps…
Love had been hiding inside their hatred all along.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then a voice spoke.
Adrian’s face went completely pale.
“Who is this?”
The call ended.
Seraphina looked up.
“What happened?”
Adrian stared at her.
The color had disappeared from his face.
“What?”
He slowly lowered the phone.
“The person who called…”
“Who?”
Adrian looked toward the dark hallway.
Then at Seraphina.
“Your father.”
Her heart stopped.
“What?”
“He said…”
Adrian swallowed.
“He said he knows we are married.”
Seraphina couldn’t breathe.
“That’s impossible.”
“I know.”
“Your father is dead.”
“I know.”
“Then who called?”
Adrian looked at the phone.
The final message had arrived.
One sentence.
STOP SEARCHING FOR THE BLACK ROSE, OR SERAPHINA WILL DIE JUST LIKE HER FATHER.
Adrian’s eyes turned dark.
Seraphina read the message.
And suddenly…
The warmth of his arms disappeared.
The truth they had been searching for was no longer a mystery.
It was a threat.
Someone was alive.
Someone who knew everything.
Someone who had been watching them.
And that person had just made one thing very clear.
Their marriage was no longer a business arrangement.
Their love was no longer a secret.
And if Adrian wanted to keep Seraphina alive…
He would have to choose between the truth…
And the woman he was beginning to love.
To be continued..
