A Secret Named Sophia

Chapter 4

A Secret Named Sophia

The Billionaire’s Forgotten Promise · August 3, 2026

The air turned cold the moment Victoria Collins stepped out of the black luxury car.

She was dressed in an elegant black suit, her confidence unmistakable. Reporters immediately recognized her and rushed toward the entrance, hoping to capture another headline involving two of the country’s most powerful business families.

Victoria ignored them.

Her attention remained fixed on Ethan.

“So,” she said with a calm smile. “This is where you’ve been.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“What are you doing here, Victoria?”

“I came to discuss a business proposal.”

Her eyes shifted toward Emma.

“But it seems I’ve interrupted something… personal.”

Emma stood silently, holding Sophia’s hand. She had no interest in becoming part of another chapter of Ethan’s complicated life.

“I should leave,” she said quietly.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Emma, wait.”

Victoria folded her arms.

“You’re still chasing the same woman after all these years?”

Ethan looked directly at Victoria.

“I never stopped.”

For a brief moment, Victoria’s confident smile disappeared.

She had always known the truth.

She had never been the woman Ethan loved.

Their engagement had been nothing more than a business arrangement.

“I see,” she whispered.

Emma watched the exchange in silence. She could feel old wounds opening again.

“Mommy,” Sophia whispered, tugging gently at Emma’s sleeve. “Who is that lady?”

Emma bent down.

“Just someone from the past.”

Sophia nodded, though she clearly didn’t understand.

Victoria noticed the little girl for the first time.

“She’s beautiful.”

“What’s her name?”

Emma hesitated.

“Sophia.”

Victoria smiled warmly at the child.

“Hello, Sophia.”

Sophia smiled back politely.

“Hello.”

Victoria’s eyes lingered on the little girl’s face.

Something about her seemed strangely familiar.

The blue eyes.

The smile.

The shape of her face.

She looked at Ethan for a second.

Then back at Sophia.

A thought crossed her mind, but she pushed it away.

“No,” she told herself. “It can’t be.”

Inside the company lobby, employees watched the scene through the glass walls.

Whispers spread quickly.

“Who’s that woman with Mr. Blackwood?”

“I’ve never seen him look at anyone like that.”

“They seem to know each other.”

Michael, Ethan’s assistant, quietly approached.

“Sir, the board members are waiting.”

“Tell them to wait.”

“They’ve already been waiting for thirty minutes.”

“They can wait longer.”

Michael nodded and stepped back.

This was the first time in years Ethan had put anything before business.

Emma finally broke the silence.

“I really have to go.”

Sophia had a doctor’s appointment that afternoon.

She couldn’t stay any longer.

Ethan looked at her desperately.

“Please.”

“Give me one hour.”

“One hour to explain everything.”

Emma looked into his eyes.

For the first time in five years…

She didn’t see a billionaire.

She saw the young man who had once stood beside her in the university library, promising to love her forever.

But promises had broken her once before.

“I don’t know if explanations can change the past.”

“They can’t,” Ethan admitted.

“But maybe they can change the future.”

Emma looked away.

The words reached her heart, but her mind refused to trust them.

Sophia gently squeezed Emma’s hand.

“Mommy.”

“Can we listen to him?”

Emma looked down at her daughter.

“Why do you want that?”

Sophia smiled innocently.

“Because he looks lonely.”

Ethan lowered his head.

Even a child could see the sadness he had hidden from the world.

An hour later…

They sat in a quiet café a few streets away.

The same café where Ethan had confessed his love years earlier.

Time had changed the furniture.

The paint.

The owner.

But not the memories.

Sophia happily enjoyed a slice of chocolate cake by the window while Emma and Ethan sat across from each other.

Neither of them spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Ethan broke the silence.

“The night I didn’t come…”

“I was forced to choose between my family and you.”

Emma looked at him.

“I know that now.”

“But knowing doesn’t erase the pain.”

“It doesn’t.”

“I waited for you until eight that night.”

“I know.”

“I called you eleven times.”

“I know.”

“I saw every missed call.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then why didn’t you answer?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Because I was a coward.”

“I believed sacrificing our love would save everyone.”

“But all it did was destroy us.”

Emma quietly wiped away a tear.

For years she had imagined hearing these words.

Yet they brought no peace.

Only more questions.

Before she could ask another one, Sophia walked over carrying her drawing book.

“I made something.”

She placed the drawing on the table.

It showed three people holding hands.

A mother.

A little girl.

And a tall man.

“Who’s this?” Ethan asked gently.

Sophia pointed at the man.

“I don’t know.”

“But I always draw him.”

Emma’s heart skipped a beat.

Sophia looked at Ethan and smiled.

“I think he looks a little like you.”

Silence filled the café.

Emma looked away.

Ethan stared at the drawing.

A strange feeling settled deep inside his heart.

He looked at Sophia again.

The familiar blue eyes.

The smile.

The way she tilted her head when she asked questions.

Everything reminded him of himself.

A question slowly formed in his mind.

One he was almost afraid to ask.

He looked at Emma.

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

“Emma…”

“How old is Sophia?”

Emma’s fingers tightened around her coffee cup.

She had known this moment would come one day.

She just hadn’t expected it to come so soon.

She slowly looked into Ethan’s eyes.

Neither of them spoke.

But both of them understood…

The biggest secret of their lives could no longer stay hidden.
