The Voice in the Darkness

Chapter 1

The Voice in the Darkness

The Whispering Well · August 3, 2026

The village of Black Hollow did not appear on most maps.

Even the people living in nearby towns avoided speaking its name after sunset.

There were no hotels.

No tourist signs.

No mobile signal once you entered the old forest road.

Only silence.

And a story that every child in the region knew by heart.

Never answer the voice from the well.

Rain fell heavily as Lena Brooks drove along the narrow mountain road.

Her old jeep struggled through the mud while thunder echoed across the dark hills.

Lena was twenty-four years old and worked as an investigative podcaster. She had become famous for solving abandoned cases and exposing fake ghost stories.

She believed every mystery had a logical explanation.

Ghosts.

Curses.

Haunted places.

To her, they were nothing more than stories people created to hide the truth.

Her producer, Noah, had begged her not to accept this assignment.

“Black Hollow is different,” he had warned.

“Every village has the same rumors.”

Lena had laughed.

“That’s exactly why people listen to my podcast.”

Now, five hours later…

She was beginning to regret her confidence.

The road had become so narrow that tree branches scraped against both sides of her jeep.

The rain suddenly stopped.

Not slowly.

Instantly.

The forest became unnaturally quiet.

No birds.

No insects.

Not even the wind.

Lena frowned.

“That’s strange.”

She reached for her phone.

No Signal.

She sighed.

“Perfect.”

Then…

Her car engine died.

The headlights flickered twice before switching off.

Everything disappeared into darkness.

Lena tried starting the engine again.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

She stepped outside with a flashlight.

Cold air wrapped around her like invisible hands.

The forest smelled of wet earth and old wood.

Somewhere deep among the trees…

She heard someone whisper.

“Lena…”

She froze.

Her flashlight swept across the forest.

Nothing.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

Only silence.

She shook her head.

“Probably the wind.”

But deep inside…

She knew it hadn’t been the wind.

The voice had spoken her name.

After twenty minutes of walking, she finally saw lights in the distance.

Black Hollow.

The village looked frozen in time.

Small wooden houses stood along muddy roads.

Every door had the same strange white symbol painted above it.

A circle with three lines crossing through its center.

People watched her from behind their curtains.

No one smiled.

No one waved.

It felt as though they had been expecting her.

An elderly man stepped onto the road.

He carried an old oil lantern.

“You must be Miss Brooks.”

Lena nodded.

“I’m looking for the guest house.”

“There isn’t one.”

“Then where am I staying?”

“My house.”

The old man turned without another word.

Lena followed him.

“My name’s Lena.”

“I know.”

“And your name?”

The old man remained silent for several seconds.

Finally he answered.

“Samuel.”

Samuel’s house was small but warm.

The smell of fresh bread filled the kitchen.

An old fireplace crackled quietly.

Samuel placed a cup of tea on the table.

“You should leave tomorrow.”

Lena smiled politely.

“I just arrived.”

“Exactly.”

She took out her recorder.

“I’ve heard stories about an old well.”

Samuel’s face changed instantly.

The cup in his hand began shaking.

“Who told you?”

“People online.”

“They’re fools.”

“So the well isn’t real?”

Samuel looked directly into her eyes.

“It’s real.”

“The stories are true.”

Lena leaned forward.

“Has anyone actually disappeared?”

Samuel whispered,

“My wife.”

The room fell silent.

“I was with her.”

“We walked past the well after sunset.”

“She heard someone calling her name.”

“I heard nothing.”

“She answered.”

“What happened?”

Samuel stared into the fire.

“She smiled.”

“As if someone she loved was waiting for her.”

“Then…”

“She walked into the forest.”

“I followed her.”

“But when I reached the well…”

“She was gone.”

“No footprints.”

“No scream.”

“No body.”

“Only her scarf lying beside the stones.”

Lena stopped recording.

For the first time…

She couldn’t think of a logical explanation.

That evening…

Samuel showed her to a small bedroom.

“There is one rule.”

“What is it?”

“If you hear someone calling your name tonight…”

“Don’t answer.”

Lena smiled.

“I’ll be fine.”

Samuel didn’t smile back.

“No.”

“You won’t.”

The village became silent before midnight.

Every light disappeared.

Even the dogs stopped barking.

Lena checked her watch.

3:12 AM

She couldn’t sleep.

The silence was too perfect.

Then…

The old clock downstairs struck once.

3:13 AM

A whisper drifted through the darkness.

“Lena…”

She sat upright in bed.

The voice came again.

Closer this time.

“Lena…”

She slowly walked toward the window.

Outside…

A young woman stood beneath the dead oak tree.

She wore a white dress soaked in muddy water.

Long black hair covered her face.

She slowly lifted one pale hand.

Pointing toward the forest.

Then she whispered again.

“Come…”

Lena’s heart pounded.

Every instinct told her to stay inside.

But her curiosity was stronger than her fear.

She grabbed her flashlight.

Quietly opened the front door.

And stepped into the cold night.

The woman was already walking toward the forest.

Without thinking…

Lena followed.

The trees swallowed the moonlight.

Branches cracked beneath her feet.

The woman never looked back.

After nearly ten minutes…

She stopped.

Lena raised her flashlight.

In front of her stood an ancient stone well covered with black moss.

Its stones looked centuries old.

The woman had disappeared.

Only the well remained.

Lena slowly stepped closer.

The water inside was perfectly still.

She pointed her flashlight into the darkness.

At first…

She saw only her reflection.

Then…

The reflection smiled.

Lena didn’t.

Her blood turned cold.

The smiling reflection slowly raised one finger…

And pointed behind her.

A voice whispered directly into her ear.

“Don’t turn around.”
