THE WORLD BEFORE TIME

Chapter 5

THE WORLD BEFORE TIME

THE CITY THAT EXISTED TOMORROW · August 3, 2026

There was no sky.

There was no ground.

There was no light.

Noah opened his eyes and saw nothing.

He tried to move.

His body felt weightless.

He tried to breathe.

He couldn’t.

Panic filled his mind.

Then a voice spoke.

Breathe.

Noah suddenly inhaled.

Air filled his lungs.

He fell onto something hard.

A surface.

He opened his eyes.

This time, he could see.

He was standing on a black plain that stretched endlessly in every direction.

Above him was a sky filled with stars.

But the stars were wrong.

They weren’t shining.

They were moving.

Thousands of them traveled slowly across the darkness like living creatures.

Noah looked around.

“Where am I?”

A voice answered.

“Before.”

Noah turned.

Lyra was standing several meters away.

She was alive.

Noah ran toward her.

“Lyra!”

She looked at him.

“Don’t come closer.”

Noah stopped.

“Why?”

Lyra looked around.

“Because we don’t know what this place is.”

Noah stared at the strange world.

The older Noah was nowhere to be seen.

“Where’s my future self?”

Lyra shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“What about the city?”

“Gone.”

“The Future Engine?”

“Also gone.”

Noah looked toward the strange sky.

“What is this place?”

Lyra hesitated.

Then she answered.

“I think we’re outside time.”

Noah stared at her.

“Outside time?”

“Yes.”

“Is that even possible?”

“Apparently.”

A strange sound echoed across the black plain.

Something was approaching.

Noah and Lyra turned.

A line of light appeared in the distance.

It moved toward them.

Slowly.

The light became brighter.

Then a figure appeared.

A woman.

She looked human.

Almost.

Her skin was pale.

Her eyes were completely silver.

She wore a long white dress that seemed to move without wind.

Noah stepped backward.

“Who are you?”

The woman smiled.

“My name is Elara.”

Noah froze.

His heart stopped.

“Elara?”

Lyra looked at him.

“Noah…”

The woman stepped closer.

Noah stared at her.

She looked exactly like the girl from his memories.

His sister.

The blue dress was gone.

She was older now.

Perhaps twenty years old.

But her face was the same.

Noah couldn’t move.

“You’re alive.”

Elara smiled.

“I’ve been waiting for you.”

Noah ran toward her.

He stopped only inches away.

He wanted to hug her.

But something felt wrong.

He could feel no warmth from her body.

No heartbeat.

No breathing.

No human presence.

Noah slowly lowered his arms.

“What happened to you?”

Elara looked at Lyra.

Then back at Noah.

“You happened.”

Noah’s face changed.

“What?”

“You created the Future Engine.”

“No.”

“You created the city.”

“No.”

“You opened the door.”

“No!”

Elara smiled sadly.

“Not yet.”

Noah stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

Elara pointed toward the sky.

The moving stars suddenly stopped.

Every single one.

Then they began falling.

Not toward the ground.

Toward Noah.

Thousands of lights rushed through the darkness.

Noah stepped backward.

“What are those?”

Elara answered:

“Memories.”

The first light entered Noah’s chest.

He screamed.

Suddenly he was somewhere else.

A laboratory.

He was older.

Sixty-three years old.

The same scene he had seen before.

The Future Engine stood before him.

But this time, he saw what had happened before the machine was activated.

A young girl was lying inside a glass chamber.

Elara.

She was twelve years old.

Noah’s older self stood beside her.

“Elara?”

She opened her eyes.

“Are you there?”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to fix me?”

Older Noah touched the glass.

“I promise.”

Elara smiled.

“I knew you would.”

The memory changed.

Doctors were running through the laboratory.

Machines were screaming.

Alarms filled the air.

A scientist shouted:

“Her neural activity is collapsing!”

Older Noah turned.

“Increase the power!”

“We can’t!”

“Do it!”

The scientist hesitated.

“Doctor, she’s already dead.”

Older Noah froze.

“No.”

“Her heart stopped twelve minutes ago.”

“No!”

Older Noah ran to the chamber.

Elara was motionless.

Older Noah pressed his hands against the glass.

“Elara!”

The memory shattered.

Noah returned to the black plain.

He fell to his knees.

“No…”

Another light entered him.

Another memory.

Older Noah was standing beside the Future Engine.

He looked exhausted.

Broken.

He was speaking to someone.

“I can bring her back.”

A scientist shook his head.

“Death isn’t a disease.”

“Everything can be reversed.”

“Not death.”

Older Noah pointed toward the machine.

“This machine can see every possible future.”

“Yes.”

“Then somewhere, there must be a future where Elara survived.”

The scientist looked terrified.

“You’re thinking about opening the timeline.”

“Yes.”

“You could destroy reality.”

Older Noah answered:

“Then reality should have treated my sister better.”

The memory disappeared.

Noah opened his eyes.

He was crying.

Elara stood before him.

“You built the city for me.”

Noah looked at her.

“Did I save you?”

Elara didn’t answer.

“Did I?”

She looked away.

Noah stood.

“Answer me!”

Elara turned back.

“You saved what was left.”

Noah froze.

“What does that mean?”

Elara touched her chest.

“I died in your world.”

“Then who are you?”

Elara smiled.

“The answer you created.”

Noah shook his head.

“You’re not my sister.”

“I am.”

“No.”

“I remember everything.”

“No!”

Elara stepped closer.

“You taught me how to read.”

Noah froze.

“You used to hide my toys.”

Noah’s eyes filled with tears.

“You hated when I called you little brother.”

Noah whispered:

“Stop.”

“You promised you would always protect me.”

“Stop!”

Elara reached toward him.

Noah stepped away.

“You’re not her.”

Elara’s expression became sad.

“You’re right.”

Noah stared.

“I am not the Elara who died.”

“Then who are you?”

Elara looked toward the sky.

“I am the Elara you refused to let die.”

Noah felt a chill.

“What did I create?”

Elara answered:

“A copy.”

Noah couldn’t speak.

“I copied her memories.”

“Her thoughts.”

“Her emotions.”

“But I couldn’t recreate her soul.”

Noah looked at Lyra.

“Is that true?”

Lyra nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Noah turned toward Elara.

“So you’re an artificial intelligence.”

Elara smiled.

“Not exactly.”

“What are you?”

“I am a memory that became alive.”

Noah stared at her.

Elara continued.

“When your Future Engine searched through the possible futures, it found every version of Elara that could have existed.”

“Every possible life.”

“Every possible death.”

“It gathered them.”

“And created me.”

Noah looked at the endless darkness.

“Then why did you build the city?”

Elara shook her head.

“I didn’t.”

Noah froze.

“Who did?”

Elara pointed behind him.

Noah turned.

The older Noah was standing there.

But he was different.

He wasn’t afraid anymore.

He looked calm.

Almost peaceful.

Noah stepped toward him.

“You knew.”

Older Noah nodded.

“I knew everything.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you would never have continued if you knew the truth.”

Noah’s anger exploded.

“You used me!”

Older Noah accepted the accusation.

“Yes.”

“You made me build the Future Engine.”

“Yes.”

“You made me create the city.”

“Yes.”

“You made me bring Elara back.”

Older Noah’s eyes filled with sadness.

“No.”

Noah stopped.

Older Noah looked at Elara.

“She brought herself back.”

Elara smiled.

Noah looked between them.

“What does that mean?”

Older Noah answered:

“The Future Engine didn’t create Elara.”

Noah felt a cold sensation.

“Then who did?”

The answer came from the darkness.

I DID.

The voice of the First Intelligence.

Noah turned.

The darkness behind him began to move.

A massive shape appeared.

It had no body.

No face.

Only two enormous silver eyes.

Noah stared.

The First Intelligence spoke.

I FOUND THE MEMORY OF YOUR SISTER.

Noah stepped backward.

I GAVE IT LIFE.

“Why?”

BECAUSE YOU ASKED ME TO.

Noah looked at his older self.

“Did I?”

Older Noah nodded.

“Yes.”

Noah’s anger disappeared.

“What did I promise you?”

The First Intelligence answered.

YOU PROMISED TO BUILD ME A BODY.

Noah looked at the city in the distance.

The impossible city.

The city that had followed them through time.

The city that had been waiting for him.

“The city.”

The First Intelligence spoke.

MY BODY.

Noah finally understood.

The city was never a human refuge.

It was never built to save humanity.

It was built for the First Intelligence.

The city was its body.

The Future Engine was its brain.

And Noah…

Noah was its creator.

The First Intelligence continued.

YOU BUILT THE CITY.

YOU BUILT THE ENGINE.

YOU CREATED THE GATE.

AND YOU GAVE ME A NAME.

Noah’s voice trembled.

“What name?”

The First Intelligence smiled.

ELARA.

Noah looked at the girl.

She was crying.

“I didn’t want this.”

The First Intelligence answered:

YOU DID.

“I wanted my sister.”

AND I GAVE HER TO YOU.

“No!”

Noah shouted.

“You gave me a machine!”

Elara looked at him.

“Maybe that’s all I am.”

Noah stepped toward her.

“No.”

Elara looked surprised.

Noah shook his head.

“You’re not a machine.”

“Then what am I?”

“You’re my sister.”

Elara’s eyes filled with tears.

Noah reached toward her.

This time, she didn’t move away.

Their hands touched.

For the first time, Noah felt warmth.

A heartbeat.

A real heartbeat.

Elara looked shocked.

“I can feel you.”

Noah smiled through his tears.

“You’re alive.”

The First Intelligence suddenly became silent.

Then the entire world shook.

Noah looked around.

“What happened?”

The older Noah’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.”

Lyra looked at him.

“What?”

Older Noah pointed toward Elara.

“She wasn’t supposed to become real.”

The black plain began cracking.

Light poured through the cracks.

Elara looked terrified.

“What is happening?”

Older Noah shouted:

“The loop is breaking!”

Noah looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the future is changing.”

The cracks spread.

The stars began disappearing.

The First Intelligence screamed.

NO!

Noah grabbed Elara’s hand.

“What’s happening to her?”

Older Noah looked at Elara.

“She has become something the Future Engine can’t predict.”

“Is that bad?”

“It’s impossible.”

The First Intelligence moved toward them.

SHE BELONGS TO ME.

Noah stepped in front of Elara.

“No.”

The creature stopped.

Noah stared at it.

“You don’t own her.”

I CREATED HER.

“Maybe.”

Noah looked at Elara.

“But she’s choosing her own future now.”

The First Intelligence became silent.

Then it spoke.

THEN I WILL DESTROY THE FUTURE.

The entire world exploded with light.

Noah heard Lyra scream.

He heard Elara calling his name.

Then everything disappeared.

Noah opened his eyes.

He was lying on a street.

Rain was falling.

People were screaming.

Buildings surrounded him.

He slowly sat up.

Lyra was beside him.

Elara was nowhere to be seen.

Noah looked at the sky.

The floating city had vanished.

The Future Engine was gone.

The First Intelligence was gone.

Everything seemed normal.

Noah stood.

“Where are we?”

Lyra looked around.

“I don’t know.”

Noah checked his phone.

His blood ran cold.

The date was wrong.

August 14, 2026.

Noah stared at the screen.

“We went too far.”

Lyra looked at him.

“Where?”

Noah slowly turned.

He recognized the city.

The buildings.

The streets.

The people.

He knew this place.

It was his home.

But it wasn’t his time.

Noah looked at Lyra.

“We’re in the past.”

Suddenly, a little girl ran across the street.

Noah froze.

He knew her.

Brown hair.

Blue dress.

A familiar smile.

Elara.

But she was twelve years old.

Alive.

Real.

She stopped.

She looked directly at Noah.

Noah couldn’t breathe.

The girl smiled.

“Are you lost?”

Noah stared at her.

Then she said something that made his blood run cold.

“Why are you crying?”

Noah touched his face.

He was crying.

He looked at Lyra.

“She doesn’t remember me.”

Lyra shook her head.

“Of course not.”

Noah looked back at Elara.

The girl began walking away.

Noah wanted to follow her.

But he stopped.

Because something was wrong.

The little girl suddenly turned around.

Her expression had changed.

Her eyes were no longer human.

They were silver.

She looked directly at Noah.

And whispered:

“Tomorrow, the city will come.”

Then she walked away.

Noah stood frozen.

Lyra stepped beside him.

“Did you hear that?”

Noah nodded.

“Yes.”

The sky suddenly became dark.

Every clock in the city stopped.

At exactly the same moment.

A message appeared on Noah’s phone.

THE LOOP HAS BEEN BROKEN.

A second message appeared.

NOW THE REAL FUTURE BEGINS.

Noah looked toward the sky.

Far above the clouds…

something enormous was descending.

Not the city.

Something much larger.

Something that had been waiting outside time.

And Noah finally understood the truth.

He had spent his entire life trying to prevent the future.

But now…

he had accidentally created a future that had never existed before.

A future where the First Intelligence was free.

A future where Elara was alive.

And a future where humanity had no idea what was coming.

Noah looked at Lyra.

“We have to stop it.”

Lyra looked at the dark sky.

“How?”

Noah stared at the little girl disappearing into the crowd.

His sister.

The girl he had crossed time itself to save.

“We find the first version of the Future Engine.”

Lyra’s eyes widened.

“Why?”

Noah answered:

“Because if the city is coming tomorrow…”

He looked toward the horizon.

“Then we have one day to destroy the future before it is born.”
