THE TRUTH BETWEEN US

Chapter 3

THE TRUTH BETWEEN US

THE PROMISE WE PRETENDED · August 4, 2026

For several seconds, no one moved.

The lake house had become completely silent.

Mia stood in the middle of the room, staring at the three people in front of her.

Her father.

Ethan.

And Margaret.

Three people who seemed to know the truth about her life.

A truth that had been hidden from her for twenty years.

Mia looked at her father.

“Is it true?”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Her father didn’t answer.

Mia stepped closer.

“Did you have something to do with Ethan’s mother’s death?”

Still nothing.

“Ethan.”

She turned toward him.

His face was pale.

His eyes were fixed on her father.

“Say something.”

Ethan finally looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

Mia’s heart broke.

“What do you mean you don’t know?”

“I don’t know what happened.”

“But your grandmother said—”

“My grandmother has been lying to me for years.”

Margaret’s expression changed.

“Ethan.”

He turned toward her.

“Don’t.”

His voice was cold.

“You don’t get to tell me what to believe anymore.”

Margaret stared at him.

“I raised you.”

“You raised me on lies.”

The words hit the room like a storm.

Mia looked at her father.

“Tell me the truth.”

Her father closed his eyes.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.”

“Then tell me.”

“I didn’t kill Ethan’s mother.”

Mia’s heart stopped.

“But you knew her?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Her father looked at Ethan.

“Because she was my closest friend.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

Mia’s father continued.

“Your mother and I were not the only ones involved.”

“Then who was?”

“Ethan’s mother.”

Ethan stared at him.

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

“My mother hated you.”

“She didn’t.”

“Grandmother said—”

“Your grandmother told you that because she wanted you to hate me.”

Ethan’s face became pale.

“Why?”

Mia’s father looked at Margaret.

“Because she knew the truth would destroy her.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Mia turned toward her.

“No.”

Margaret stopped.

Mia’s voice shook.

“I want to know everything.”

“Mia.”

“Everything!”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I spent twenty years thinking my father abandoned me.”

She looked at her father.

“Then I find out you’re alive.”

She looked at Ethan.

“Then I find out you knew him.”

Then Margaret.

“And now I’m hearing that my father is responsible for your mother’s death.”

Her voice broke.

“How much more am I supposed to take?”

No one answered.

Mia wiped her tears.

“I’m done.”

She walked toward the door.

Ethan followed.

“Mia.”

She stopped.

“Don’t.”

“I need to talk to you.”

“I can’t.”

“Please.”

She turned.

“What do you want me to say?”

Ethan stepped closer.

“I don’t know.”

“Exactly.”

“I need time.”

“So do I.”

“Then give me that.”

Mia stared at him.

“You don’t trust me.”

Ethan’s expression softened.

“I don’t know what to believe.”

Mia nodded.

“Neither do I.”

She walked outside.

Ethan followed her.

They stood near the lake.

The sun was setting.

The sky had turned orange.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Finally, Ethan said:

“I’m sorry.”

Mia looked at him.

“For what?”

“For my family.”

“You didn’t choose them.”

“No.”

“Then don’t apologize.”

Ethan looked at the water.

“My mother died when I was six.”

Mia’s heart tightened.

“I didn’t know.”

“I don’t talk about her.”

“Why?”

“Because everyone told me she was killed because of your father.”

Mia looked at him.

“Do you believe that?”

“I did.”

“And now?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Now I don’t know.”

Mia sat near the water.

Ethan sat beside her.

“My father said he didn’t do it.”

“I heard.”

“Do you believe him?”

Ethan was silent.

Mia looked away.

“You don’t.”

“I want to.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“No.”

Mia’s voice became quiet.

“Maybe he did something terrible.”

Ethan looked at her.

She continued:

“Maybe he didn’t.”

“Why are you defending him?”

“I’m not.”

She looked at him.

“I’m trying to understand.”

Ethan nodded.

“Me too.”

They sat quietly.

Then Ethan said:

“There’s something else.”

Mia turned.

“What?”

“Before my mother died, she left me something.”

“What?”

“A letter.”

Mia waited.

“I was too young to understand it.”

“Where is it?”

“At the main house.”

“Can we see it?”

“Yes.”

They returned to the lake house.

Margaret was gone.

Mia’s father was sitting alone in the library.

Mia stopped.

“Where is Margaret?”

“She left.”

“Why?”

“She knows the truth is coming out.”

Mia looked at him.

“What truth?”

Her father stood.

“Not here.”

“Then where?”

He walked toward a bookshelf.

He pulled out an old book.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small metal box.

Mia stared.

“What is that?”

“Something your mother and I hid.”

“Why?”

“Because people were looking for it.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“What is inside?”

Mia’s father looked at him.

“Proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“Who really stole the money.”

Ethan froze.

“Your grandmother?”

Mia’s father nodded.

“Yes.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

“She wasn’t alone.”

“Who helped her?”

Mia’s father looked at Ethan.

“Your father’s business partner.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Robert?”

Mia had heard the name before.

“Who is Robert?”

“My father’s closest friend,” Ethan said.

“He’s dead.”

Mia’s father shook his head.

“No.”

Ethan stared.

“He died ten years ago.”

“That’s what everyone believes.”

“Then where is he?”

Mia’s father opened the box.

Inside were photographs.

Bank documents.

Letters.

And a newspaper clipping.

Mia picked it up.

The headline read:

BUSINESSMAN ROBERT COLE PRESUMED DEAD AFTER PRIVATE PLANE CRASH

Mia stared.

“Robert Cole.”

Ethan’s face changed.

“That’s my grandfather.”

Mia looked at him.

“What?”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Robert Cole was my grandfather.”

Mia looked at her father.

“Then why is he involved?”

“Because he wasn’t just Margaret’s husband.”

“Who was he?”

“Your father’s business partner.”

Ethan stared.

“Why did my father never tell me?”

“Because your father was afraid.”

“Of Robert?”

“Yes.”

Mia looked at the documents.

“What did he do?”

Her father sat down.

“Robert was involved in illegal financial dealings.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“My grandfather was a businessman.”

“That’s what everyone thought.”

“What about my father?”

“Your father discovered the truth.”

“Then why did he disappear?”

“Because Robert threatened him.”

“With what?”

Mia’s father looked at her.

“With you.”

Mia froze.

“He threatened to hurt me?”

“Yes.”

“That’s why you left?”

“Yes.”

Mia felt tears fill her eyes.

“Why didn’t you take me with you?”

“Because he would have followed.”

“So you left me with Mom.”

“Your mother was the safest person for you.”

Mia looked down.

“She told me you abandoned us.”

“I asked her to.”

“Why?”

“Because if you hated me, you wouldn’t look for me.”

Mia began crying.

“I spent my whole life thinking you didn’t love me.”

Her father walked toward her.

“I loved you more than anything.”

Mia finally hugged him.

For twenty years, she had imagined this moment.

She had imagined being angry.

She had imagined asking questions.

She had imagined walking away.

But instead, she simply cried.

Her father held her.

“I’m sorry.”

Mia whispered:

“I missed you.”

“I missed you every day.”

Ethan stood silently nearby.

He watched them.

And something inside him broke.

Because he had spent his whole life believing Mia’s father had destroyed his family.

But now he wasn’t sure.

Later that night, Mia went upstairs.

She found Ethan sitting on the balcony.

“Can I join you?”

He looked at her.

“Of course.”

She sat beside him.

“How are you?”

“I don’t know.”

“Same.”

Ethan smiled sadly.

Mia looked at him.

“Do you hate my father?”

He thought about it.

“I don’t know.”

“Do you hate me?”

His head turned immediately.

“No.”

“Even if he did something?”

“You’re not him.”

Mia looked down.

“That’s what you said last night.”

“I meant it.”

“Why?”

“Because I know you.”

She looked at him.

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“After one month?”

“Sometimes it doesn’t take years.”

Mia’s heart moved.

“Ethan.”

He turned toward her.

“I don’t want to lose you.”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“You won’t.”

“How do you know?”

“I don’t.”

He reached for her hand.

“Then promise me.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“Don’t disappear.”

Mia squeezed his hand.

“I won’t.”

“Even if things get difficult?”

“Even then.”

“Even if your father is responsible for what happened to my mother?”

Mia hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“Even then.”

Ethan looked at her.

“I believe you.”

Mia smiled through her tears.

“Thank you.”

Their hands remained together.

Neither moved.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Mia.”

“Yes?”

“I need to tell you something.”

“What?”

He took a breath.

“I don’t think I can keep pretending.”

Her heart stopped.

“About what?”

“Us.”

Mia stared at him.

“We are pretending.”

“I know.”

“That’s the whole point.”

“I know.”

“Then what’s wrong?”

Ethan moved closer.

“I don’t know when it happened.”

“What?”

“When I stopped pretending.”

Mia couldn’t breathe.

“Ethan.”

“I tried to convince myself that you’re just my fake girlfriend.”

“Ethan—”

“But I can’t.”

She pulled her hand away.

“This is dangerous.”

“I know.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I do.”

“No.”

Mia stood.

“You can’t fall in love with me.”

“Why?”

“Because—”

She stopped.

The words were almost there.

Because someone was threatening her.

Because her father had a dangerous past.

Because she was terrified of losing him.

But she couldn’t say any of it.

Ethan stood.

“Because what?”

Mia shook her head.

“Nothing.”

“Mia.”

“I need to go.”

She turned.

Ethan caught her wrist.

“Mia.”

She looked at him.

He was close.

Too close.

“I don’t want to lose you.”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t even have me.”

The words hurt them both.

Ethan released her.

Mia walked away.

She entered her room and closed the door.

Then she leaned against it.

Her heart was breaking.

Because she loved him.

She knew it now.

She loved Ethan Cole.

And that was the one thing she had promised herself would never happen.

The next morning, Mia woke to shouting.

She rushed downstairs.

Ethan was standing near the front door.

Her father was there.

And Margaret.

Mia stopped.

Margaret looked furious.

“Where is the box?”

Mia’s father said nothing.

Margaret turned toward Ethan.

“Ask her.”

Ethan looked confused.

“Ask who?”

“Your girlfriend.”

Mia froze.

“What?”

Margaret pointed at Mia.

“She has it.”

Mia shook her head.

“I don’t.”

Margaret smiled.

“Search her room.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“No.”

Margaret looked at him.

“Why are you protecting her?”

“Because I trust her.”

Margaret laughed.

“You’re making the same mistake your father made.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Don’t talk about my father.”

“Then ask Mia.”

Mia stared at her.

“Ask me what?”

Margaret walked toward her.

“Where is the missing document?”

“What document?”

“The one your father stole.”

“My father didn’t steal anything.”

Margaret’s expression became cold.

“Then why was it found in your room?”

Mia froze.

“What?”

Margaret held up a photograph.

It showed Mia’s bedroom.

The metal box was on her bed.

Mia stared.

“I’ve never seen that.”

Ethan looked at her.

Mia saw the doubt in his eyes.

“No.”

She stepped toward him.

“Ethan, I didn’t take it.”

He didn’t answer.

Her heart broke.

“Say something.”

Ethan looked at the photograph.

Then at her.

“I don’t know.”

Mia stepped backward.

“You don’t believe me.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You don’t have to.”

Margaret smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Mia looked at her.

“What?”

Margaret’s voice was quiet.

“Your fake relationship is over.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“No.”

Margaret stared at him.

“You choose her?”

Ethan looked at Mia.

Mia’s heart stopped.

Then he said:

“Yes.”

Margaret’s expression changed.

“Even if she’s lying?”

“Yes.”

“Even if her father destroyed our family?”

“Yes.”

“Even if she is the reason you’ll lose everything?”

Ethan didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.”

Mia couldn’t believe it.

Ethan turned toward her.

“Mia.”

She was crying.

“Why?”

“Because I believe you.”

She shook her head.

“You shouldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because I have a secret.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“What secret?”

Mia looked at him.

“I know who my father really is.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

Mia’s voice broke.

“I’ve known for years.”

“How?”

“My mother told me.”

“Who is he?”

Mia couldn’t speak.

Then she whispered:

“Robert Cole.”

Ethan’s face went completely pale.

“That’s impossible.”

Mia shook her head.

“No.”

Ethan stepped backward.

“You’re saying your father…”

“Yes.”

“Is my grandfather?”

Mia nodded.

Silence.

Ethan stared at her.

The woman he loved.

The woman he had been pretending to love.

The woman whose father had supposedly destroyed his family.

Was the granddaughter of the man who had destroyed both of them.

Mia began crying.

“I didn’t know what to do.”

Ethan couldn’t speak.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“Of losing you.”

Ethan looked away.

Mia stepped closer.

“Now you know.”

He looked at her.

“I need time.”

Mia nodded.

“I understand.”

He walked away.

Mia watched him go.

Her heart shattered.

But then Ethan stopped.

He turned around.

Mia looked at him.

He didn’t say anything.

He simply walked back.

And kissed her.

Mia froze.

The kiss was emotional.

Desperate.

Painful.

It wasn’t the kiss of a fake couple.

It was the kiss of two people who knew they might lose each other.

When they separated, Ethan whispered:

“I don’t know how to forgive your grandfather.”

Mia cried.

“I know.”

“I don’t know what happened to my mother.”

“I know.”

“I don’t know if I can trust the past.”

“I know.”

He touched her face.

“But I know one thing.”

Mia looked at him.

“What?”

“I love you.”

Her tears fell.

“Ethan.”

“I don’t care if it started as a lie.”

He pressed his forehead against hers.

“Because what I feel now is real.”

Mia closed her eyes.

“I love you too.”

They held each other.

But neither noticed Margaret standing at the end of the hallway.

She had heard everything.

She slowly smiled.

Because now she knew exactly how to destroy them.

And that evening, she made one phone call.

“Robert.”

A man’s voice answered.

“Margaret.”

“She’s here.”

Silence.

“Mia?”

“Yes.”

“Then the girl survived.”

“She knows the truth.”

Another silence.

“Then we have a problem.”

Margaret looked toward the window.

Ethan and Mia were standing beside the lake.

Together.

“Not anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

Margaret smiled.

“She loves him.”

The man laughed.

“Then use him.”

Margaret’s smile disappeared.

“That’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

The next morning, Mia woke to a message.

UNKNOWN NUMBER:

YOUR FATHER IS NOT ROBERT COLE.

Mia stared.

Another message appeared.

YOU HAVE BEEN LIED TO AGAIN.

Her heart raced.

Then came the final message.

MEET ME ALONE AT THE OLD BOATHOUSE.

Mia looked toward the lake.

The old boathouse stood at the far end.

She knew she shouldn’t go.

But there was one thing she needed to know.

The truth.

She quietly left the house.

She didn’t see Ethan watching from his window.

He saw her walk toward the lake.

He followed.

Mia entered the boathouse.

It was dark.

Empty.

Then a man stepped from the shadows.

Mia froze.

He was old.

His face was familiar.

She had seen his photograph.

Her heart stopped.

“Who are you?”

The man smiled.

“My name is Robert.”

Mia stepped backward.

“Robert Cole?”

“Yes.”

“But you’re dead.”

“That’s what they wanted everyone to believe.”

Mia couldn’t breathe.

“Why did you call me?”

Robert looked at her.

“Because you’re my granddaughter.”

Mia stared.

“I already know.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You don’t.”

“What don’t I know?”

Robert stepped closer.

“Your father isn’t my son.”

Mia froze.

“What?”

Robert smiled.

“Your father is the man you think is dead.”

Mia’s blood ran cold.

“Who?”

Robert looked toward the door.

Someone was standing there.

Ethan.

He had heard everything.

Robert pointed at him.

“Ask him.”

Mia turned.

Ethan stared at her.

Robert whispered:

“Your father is Ethan’s father.”

Mia’s world collapsed.

She looked at Ethan.

Ethan couldn’t speak.

Because the impossible truth had just been revealed.

Mia and Ethan weren’t strangers.

They weren’t just fake lovers.

They weren’t even supposed to be lovers.

They were connected by a secret that could destroy both their families.

And somewhere behind them, Margaret was watching.

Smiling.

Because she had finally found the one secret that could tear Mia and Ethan apart forever.
