THE LIE THAT BROKE US

Chapter 4

THE LIE THAT BROKE US

THE PROMISE WE PRETENDED · August 4, 2026

Mia couldn’t move.

She stood inside the old boathouse, staring at Ethan.

His face was pale.

His eyes were filled with confusion.

Behind him stood Robert Cole, the man everyone had believed was dead for twenty years.

Mia’s mind refused to accept what she had just heard.

Your father is Ethan’s father.

The words repeated in her head.

Again.

And again.

And again.

“No.”

Mia shook her head.

“That’s not possible.”

Robert remained silent.

Mia looked at him.

“Say it again.”

Robert’s expression was cold.

“Your father is Ethan’s father.”

Ethan suddenly stepped forward.

“Stop.”

Robert looked at him.

Ethan’s voice was shaking.

“Don’t say another word.”

Mia turned toward Ethan.

“Ethan.”

He looked at her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Mia searched his eyes for an answer.

For anything.

But there was only shock.

“Ethan, is this true?”

“I don’t know.”

Robert laughed softly.

“Of course you don’t.”

Ethan turned toward him.

“You’re supposed to be dead.”

Robert smiled.

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

“Where have you been?”

“Watching.”

“Watching what?”

“You.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Why?”

Robert’s smile disappeared.

“Because I needed to know what kind of man you would become.”

Ethan’s eyes hardened.

“You abandoned me.”

Robert didn’t answer.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

“Not when Margaret was involved.”

Mia stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Both men looked at her.

She was trembling.

“I need to know who my father is.”

Robert looked at her.

“I told you.”

“No.”

Mia shook her head.

“You told me Ethan’s father is my father.”

“Yes.”

“Then who is Ethan’s mother?”

Robert looked away.

Mia’s heart began beating faster.

“Answer me.”

Robert finally said:

“Her name was Elena.”

Ethan froze.

“My mother?”

Robert nodded.

Mia stared.

“And my father was…”

Robert looked at Ethan.

“Your father.”

Mia felt sick.

She turned toward Ethan.

“No.”

Ethan’s eyes were filled with tears.

“Mia.”

“No.”

She stepped backward.

“This isn’t true.”

Robert said nothing.

Mia looked at Ethan.

“Tell me he’s lying.”

Ethan couldn’t speak.

“Please.”

“I don’t know.”

“Tell me he’s lying!”

“I don’t know!”

His voice echoed through the boathouse.

Mia flinched.

Ethan immediately looked ashamed.

“I’m sorry.”

Mia shook her head.

“No.”

She walked toward the door.

Ethan grabbed her hand.

“Mia.”

She pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.”

His expression broke.

“Please.”

“Don’t.”

“I didn’t know.”

“I know.”

“I swear.”

“I know.”

“Then look at me.”

Mia couldn’t.

“If this is true…”

Her voice broke.

“If you’re really my brother…”

Ethan closed his eyes.

The word destroyed him.

Brother.

The woman he loved.

The woman he had kissed.

The woman he had held.

The woman he had promised not to lose.

Mia began crying.

“I can’t do this.”

She ran.

“Mia!”

Ethan followed.

She kept running toward the lake house.

She didn’t stop.

She didn’t look back.

Because if she looked back, she knew she would see the man she loved.

And she couldn’t love him anymore.

Not if he was her brother.

Not if their entire relationship had been built on a lie.

When Mia reached the house, she went straight to her room.

She locked the door.

Then she collapsed on the floor.

Her body shook.

She had lost her father.

She had lost her family.

She had lost her past.

And now she had lost Ethan.

A knock came at the door.

“Mia.”

Ethan.

She closed her eyes.

“Go away.”

“Please.”

“No.”

“I need to explain.”

“There’s nothing to explain.”

“That’s not true.”

Mia laughed through her tears.

“What do you want me to say?”

“Say you believe me.”

“I do.”

“Then open the door.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I can’t look at you.”

Silence.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Why?”

Mia pressed her hand against her heart.

“Because I love you.”

Ethan became silent.

Mia cried harder.

“And I wish I didn’t.”

“Mia.”

“Don’t.”

“I love you too.”

“That’s the problem.”

“No.”

“It is.”

“Why?”

“Because if you’re my brother…”

“I’m not.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Yes, I do.”

“How?”

“Because I remember my father.”

Mia froze.

Ethan continued.

“I remember him.”

“What?”

“I was six.”

He paused.

“I remember his face.”

Mia stood slowly.

Ethan continued from the other side of the door.

“My father wasn’t your father.”

“Then why did Robert say—”

“Because he’s lying.”

Mia stopped.

“What?”

“Robert is lying.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I know my father.”

“Who was he?”

Ethan took a breath.

“His name was Daniel Cole.”

Mia’s heart stopped.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Then who is Robert?”

“My grandfather.”

“Your grandfather.”

“Yes.”

Mia stepped away from the door.

“Then Robert is lying.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Mia looked at the door.

“Ethan.”

“I’m here.”

“Tell me the truth.”

“I am.”

“Your father wasn’t my father?”

“No.”

“Then who was?”

Ethan hesitated.

Mia’s heart sank.

“Ethan.”

“I don’t know.”

She closed her eyes.

“Then we’re back where we started.”

“No.”

“What do you mean?”

“I know someone who might.”

“Who?”

“My mother.”

Mia froze.

“Your mother is dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then how can she tell us?”

“Because she left another letter.”

Mia opened the door.

Ethan stood outside.

His eyes were red.

He looked exhausted.

Mia stared at him.

“Where?”

“In the house.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of finding out the truth.”

Mia looked away.

“Me too.”

For a moment, they stood silently.

Then Ethan said:

“Come with me.”

“Where?”

“To my mother’s room.”

“Is it here?”

“No.”

“Where?”

“My father’s old estate.”

Mia looked at him.

“You want to go there now?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if Robert is lying, we need to know why.”

Mia hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“Okay.”

They left the lake house before sunrise.

Neither spoke during the drive.

The silence was painful.

Mia sat beside Ethan.

Their hands were only inches apart.

But neither reached for the other.

Everything had changed.

Four hours later, they arrived at the old Cole estate.

It was abandoned.

The windows were broken.

The gardens were overgrown.

The front door was covered in dust.

Mia stared.

“Your family lived here?”

“Once.”

“What happened?”

“After my mother died, my father left.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Mia looked at him.

“Your family has a lot of secrets.”

Ethan smiled sadly.

“So does yours.”

“Fair.”

They entered the house.

The air smelled old.

Ethan turned on a flashlight.

“Her room is upstairs.”

They climbed the staircase.

The wooden floor creaked.

Mia felt nervous.

“Are you sure this is safe?”

“No.”

“Great.”

Ethan smiled.

“Stay close.”

Mia looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I said so.”

“You’re not my boyfriend.”

The words came out before she could stop them.

Ethan’s smile disappeared.

Mia immediately regretted it.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

They continued.

At the end of the hallway, Ethan opened a door.

Inside was a bedroom.

Everything had been left untouched.

A mirror.

A wardrobe.

A small table.

And photographs.

Ethan walked toward one.

He picked it up.

His mother.

A beautiful woman with dark hair.

She was holding a little boy.

Ethan.

Mia looked at the photograph.

“You were cute.”

Ethan smiled.

“Was?”

Mia laughed softly.

For one moment, things felt normal.

Then Ethan looked at her.

Mia looked away.

The moment disappeared.

Ethan began searching through drawers.

“Where is the letter?”

“I don’t know.”

“My father told me there was one.”

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he give it to you?”

“I was too young.”

Mia sat on the bed.

“What did your father say before he died?”

Ethan stopped.

“My father didn’t die.”

Mia stared.

“What?”

“He’s missing.”

“Like mine?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did everyone think he was dead?”

“Because Robert told us.”

Mia looked around.

“Robert lied about your father too.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Ethan opened another drawer.

Nothing.

Then Mia noticed something.

“Wait.”

She pointed toward the wall.

“What?”

“That painting.”

Ethan walked toward it.

He moved the painting.

Behind it was a small safe.

Mia stared.

“Do you know the code?”

Ethan shook his head.

“Try your mother’s birthday.”

He entered the numbers.

Nothing.

“Your father’s?”

Nothing.

“Your birthday?”

Nothing.

Mia thought.

“Try mine.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

He entered Mia’s birthday.

The safe opened.

They stared at each other.

“What?”

Mia stepped closer.

“Why would your mother’s safe open with my birthday?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

Inside was a letter.

And a photograph.

Ethan picked up the photograph.

His hands began shaking.

Mia looked at it.

A young Elena stood beside a man.

Mia recognized him.

Her father.

But there was someone else in the photograph.

A little girl.

Mia.

Mia’s heart stopped.

“That’s me.”

Ethan stared.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Mia took the photograph.

She was only a baby.

Her father was holding her.

Elena was standing beside him.

And behind them was Daniel Cole.

Ethan’s father.

Mia stared.

“Why were they together?”

Ethan picked up the letter.

“Let’s find out.”

He opened it.

The letter was addressed to Ethan.

My dearest Ethan,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you.

Ethan stopped.

Mia watched him.

He continued reading.

I need you to understand something. Your father was not the man you believed him to be.

Ethan looked at Mia.

His hands trembled.

Daniel was a good man. He loved our family. But he also loved someone else.

Mia’s heart stopped.

Ethan continued.

Her name was Sarah Bennett.

Mia couldn’t breathe.

“That’s my mother.”

Ethan nodded.

They continued reading.

Daniel and Sarah fell in love before either of them married. Their relationship was a secret. They were afraid of Margaret.

Mia stared.

Her mother.

Ethan’s father.

Together.

The story was becoming more complicated.

Sarah became pregnant.

Mia covered her mouth.

Ethan looked at her.

Margaret discovered the truth. She threatened Sarah. She told her that if she didn’t disappear, Daniel would lose everything.

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

Sarah gave birth to a daughter.

Mia whispered:

“Me.”

Ethan nodded.

Daniel wanted to leave with Sarah and their daughter. But Margaret stopped him. She threatened to destroy Sarah’s family.

The letter shook in Ethan’s hands.

Then Elena found out.

Ethan’s mother.

She confronted Margaret.

Mia’s heart raced.

The night Elena died was not an accident.

Ethan stopped reading.

His eyes filled with tears.

Mia reached for his hand.

“What does it say?”

Ethan couldn’t answer.

“Please.”

He continued.

Elena discovered that Margaret had arranged everything.

Mia froze.

“Everything?”

Ethan nodded.

She planned to make it look like Sarah’s family had betrayed the Coles. She blamed Sarah’s husband. She blamed Daniel’s friend. She created a story that would keep everyone silent.

Mia’s father.

The stolen money.

The disappearance.

Everything.

It had all been a lie.

Then Ethan read the final lines.

Ethan, your father is alive.

Mia’s heart stopped.

Ethan looked at her.

The letter fell from his hands.

“My father is alive.”

Mia couldn’t speak.

“Where?”

The answer was written on the back.

A location.

A small town.

Mia looked at Ethan.

“That’s where my father disappeared.”

Ethan stared.

“Then they’re together.”

Mia nodded.

“My father and yours.”

Ethan took a deep breath.

“Then we have to find them.”

Mia looked at the photograph again.

She suddenly noticed something.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“Look.”

She pointed.

In the background was a house.

A small house near the sea.

Mia recognized it.

“My mother used to draw this house.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

Mia turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten address.

She read it.

Then she froze.

“Ethan.”

“What?”

“This isn’t just an address.”

“Why?”

“It’s my childhood home.”

Ethan stared.

“What?”

“The house where my mother raised me.”

Mia’s heart began racing.

“Why would your mother have a photograph of my father and me there?”

Ethan looked at the letter.

“Because she knew you.”

Mia shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because my mother told me I was born there.”

Silence.

Ethan stared at her.

“You were born there?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

Ethan’s face changed.

Mia looked at him.

“What?”

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan?”

He slowly stepped backward.

“Mia.”

“What?”

“My mother died twenty years ago.”

Mia’s blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?”

“She died the same month you were born.”

Mia stared.

“That’s impossible.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at the photograph.

Then at her.

“Maybe your father wasn’t the only person who disappeared.”

Mia felt dizzy.

“What do you mean?”

Ethan whispered:

“Maybe your mother disappeared too.”

Mia couldn’t breathe.

Her entire life had been built on one story.

Her mother had raised her.

Her father had abandoned them.

Ethan’s mother had died.

His father had disappeared.

But now the pieces didn’t fit.

Not anymore.

Suddenly, footsteps echoed downstairs.

Ethan turned.

“Did you hear that?”

Mia nodded.

Someone was inside the house.

Ethan grabbed her hand.

“Stay behind me.”

They slowly walked toward the stairs.

A shadow moved across the hallway.

Mia held her breath.

“Ethan.”

“I’m here.”

The front door slammed.

They rushed downstairs.

But no one was there.

Only an envelope lay on the floor.

Ethan picked it up.

There was no name.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Mia looked at it.

Her entire body froze.

It showed her mother.

Sarah.

Standing beside Ethan’s father.

Daniel.

And in Sarah’s arms was a newborn baby.

Mia.

But that wasn’t the shocking part.

A second baby was standing beside them.

A little boy.

Ethan.

Mia stared.

“No.”

Ethan’s face became pale.

“That’s impossible.”

The photograph fell from her hands.

On the back, someone had written:

THEY WERE NEVER BROTHER AND SISTER.

Mia looked at Ethan.

Her heart stopped.

Another line was written beneath it.

THEY WERE TWINS.

Mia couldn’t breathe.

Ethan stared at her.

They had spent their lives believing they came from different families.

They had spent weeks pretending to be lovers.

They had fallen in love.

And now they were learning that they had been connected since birth.

Mia whispered:

“We’re twins?”

Ethan shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“Then who is my father?”

Ethan looked at the photograph.

“Maybe Daniel.”

“And your mother?”

“Maybe Sarah.”

Mia’s mind was spinning.

Then a voice came from behind them.

“You’re close.”

They turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Ethan immediately recognized him.

“Dad?”

Daniel Cole looked at his son.

Then at Mia.

His eyes filled with tears.

“My children.”

Mia froze.

Ethan couldn’t move.

Daniel stepped forward.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.”

Mia’s voice trembled.

“Is it true?”

Daniel looked at them.

“Yes.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“We’re twins?”

Daniel nodded.

Mia began crying.

“But how?”

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the photograph.

“Because your mother was pregnant with twins.”

Mia stared.

“Then why were we separated?”

Daniel’s face became filled with pain.

“Because Margaret took Ethan.”

Ethan froze.

“And you took me?”

Daniel nodded.

“Sarah took you.”

Mia couldn’t understand.

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

“From what?”

Daniel looked toward the door.

“From Margaret.”

Suddenly, the house became silent.

Then Daniel whispered:

“She’s coming.”

Mia turned.

“Who?”

Daniel’s face became terrified.

“Your grandmother.”

Mia froze.

“Margaret?”

Daniel nodded.

“She knows you’re here.”

Ethan grabbed Mia’s hand.

“Then we leave.”

Daniel shook his head.

“It’s too late.”

A car stopped outside.

Mia heard footsteps.

Margaret’s voice echoed through the house.

“Ethan.”

Everyone froze.

Margaret entered.

She looked at Daniel.

Then at Mia.

Then at Ethan.

And smiled.

“Finally.”

Mia stared at her.

“What do you want?”

Margaret looked at her.

“Everything.”

“Why?”

Margaret’s eyes moved to Ethan.

“Because your father stole my son.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“You stole me from my mother.”

Margaret’s smile disappeared.

“She was weak.”

“She was my mother.”

“And she would have ruined everything.”

Mia stepped forward.

“What about me?”

Margaret looked at her.

“You were never supposed to survive.”

Mia’s blood turned cold.

Ethan immediately moved in front of her.

“What did you say?”

Margaret smiled.

“Ask your father.”

Mia looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?”

Daniel’s face was full of tears.

“Yes.”

Mia stepped backward.

“She tried to kill me?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Margaret interrupted.

“Not me.”

Mia looked at her.

“Then who?”

Margaret smiled.

“Your mother.”

Mia froze.

“What?”

Margaret’s voice became quiet.

“Sarah was the one who tried to kill you.”

Mia stared.

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

Margaret reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small photograph.

Then she handed it to Mia.

Mia looked down.

It showed Sarah.

Her mother.

Standing beside a newborn baby.

And the baby was covered in blood.

Mia dropped the photograph.

Margaret smiled.

“Your mother tried to kill you the night you were born.”

Mia couldn’t breathe.

Ethan grabbed her.

“Mia.”

She looked at him.

Her entire world was falling apart.

Her father.

Her mother.

Her brother.

Her family.

Everything she believed was a lie.

Then Margaret whispered:

“Now you know why I separated the twins.”

Mia looked at Ethan.

Tears filled her eyes.

Ethan held her tighter.

Margaret turned toward the door.

“You have until midnight.”

Mia stared.

“For what?”

Margaret smiled.

“To decide which family you belong to.”

Then she walked away.

The door closed.

Mia collapsed into Ethan’s arms.

“I don’t know who I am anymore.”

Ethan held her.

“You are Mia.”

“But who are my parents?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who am I supposed to trust?”

“Me.”

She looked at him.

“Can I?”

Ethan wiped her tears.

“Always.”

Mia closed her eyes.

Then Daniel spoke.

“There is one more thing.”

Ethan turned.

“What?”

Daniel looked at Mia.

“The photograph Margaret showed you.”

“What about it?”

“Your mother didn’t try to kill you.”

Mia froze.

“Then why was there blood?”

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Because you weren’t the baby covered in blood.”

Mia stared.

“Then who was?”

Daniel looked toward the photograph.

“The other twin.”

Silence.

Ethan’s face went pale.

“Me?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Mia whispered:

“Then who?”

Daniel looked at them.

“The third child.”

Mia couldn’t breathe.

“Third?”

Daniel nodded.

“Because you and Ethan weren’t the only babies born that night.”

And somewhere outside the old estate, Margaret sat inside her car.

She looked at an old photograph.

Three newborn babies.

Three children.

Three families.

And one secret that had been buried for twenty years.

She smiled.

Because Mia and Ethan had finally discovered the truth.

But they had only discovered the first part.

The real secret was still waiting.

And it would change everything they thought they knew about love, family, and the past.
