THE LOVE THAT WAS REAL

Chapter 6

THE LOVE THAT WAS REAL

THE PROMISE WE PRETENDED · August 4, 2026

The old estate was silent.

Too silent.

Mia stood beside Ethan in the hallway, staring at the closed door of his mother’s old bedroom.

Behind them, Daniel waited.

Somewhere outside, Robert had taken Lily.

And somewhere else, Margaret was waiting for the final move.

Mia tightened her grip around Ethan’s hand.

“We have to find the evidence.”

Ethan nodded.

“And Lily.”

“And my mother.”

“And your father.”

Mia looked at Daniel.

“And we have to stop Margaret.”

Daniel nodded.

“But first, you need to know the truth.”

Mia frowned.

“What truth?”

Daniel looked at her.

“About your father.”

Mia’s heart tightened.

“I thought you said you didn’t know.”

“I didn’t.”

“Then who does?”

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Your mother.”

Mia froze.

“Sarah?”

“Yes.”

“She’s alive.”

“I know.”

“Where is she?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Mia stepped closer.

“You have to know something.”

“I know what happened twenty years ago.”

“Then tell me.”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Your mother was pregnant with three children.”

Mia stared.

“I know.”

“Two girls.”

“Lily and me.”

“Yes.”

“And a boy.”

Mia looked at Ethan.

“That’s Ethan.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Mia froze.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Then who?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Your father.”

Ethan’s face changed.

“What?”

Daniel nodded.

“Daniel Cole was not your father.”

Ethan’s eyes widened.

“My father was…”

“Robert.”

Silence.

Mia couldn’t breathe.

Ethan stepped backward.

“No.”

Daniel continued.

“Robert was your biological father.”

Ethan stared.

“Then why did my mother marry Daniel?”

“Because Daniel loved her.”

“And Robert?”

“Robert wanted control.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Because Elena was afraid.”

“Afraid of Robert?”

“Yes.”

Mia looked at Daniel.

“Then what about me?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Your father was Daniel.”

Mia froze.

Ethan stared at her.

“So we’re not related.”

“No.”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then Lily?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your sister.”

“Same father?”

“Yes.”

Mia covered her mouth.

“So Robert is Ethan’s father.”

“And Daniel is mine and Lily’s.”

“Yes.”

Everything finally made sense.

Robert had lied about the twins.

He had lied because he wanted Ethan to believe Mia was his sister.

He wanted to destroy their love.

He wanted to keep them apart.

Mia looked at Ethan.

“That’s why he told us we were twins.”

Ethan nodded.

“He wanted us to hate ourselves for loving each other.”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Why?”

“Because if we stayed together, we could expose him.”

Daniel nodded.

“And because he knew you were the rightful heirs.”

Mia looked at him.

“What about the inheritance?”

“Robert wanted Ethan to inherit everything.”

“But the will belongs to me and Lily.”

“Yes.”

“Not Ethan?”

“No.”

Ethan looked confused.

“Then why did Robert want me?”

“Because he planned to use you.”

“For what?”

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“To take control of the company.”

Mia understood.

“And Lily?”

“She was the legal heir.”

“So Robert kidnapped her.”

“Yes.”

“And my mother?”

“She gave Lily to Robert because he threatened to kill you.”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“She saved me.”

“Yes.”

Mia sat down.

For twenty years, she had believed her mother had abandoned her.

Now she understood.

Sarah had made an impossible choice.

She had sacrificed one daughter to save another.

It wasn’t right.

But it was never as simple as Mia had believed.

Ethan sat beside her.

Mia looked at him.

“Everything was a lie.”

“Not everything.”

“What wasn’t?”

Ethan took her hand.

“Us.”

Mia’s tears fell.

“We started with a fake relationship.”

“I know.”

“We lied to everyone.”

“I know.”

“And somehow…”

She smiled through her tears.

“…you became the only person I could trust.”

Ethan touched her cheek.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Daniel watched them.

Then he said:

“We need to leave.”

Mia stood.

“Where?”

“To the place where Robert is holding Lily.”

“How do you know?”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Because I know my father.”

Ethan nodded.

“Where?”

“The old warehouse.”

Mia’s heart raced.

“Then let’s go.”

They drove through the night.

The warehouse stood near the harbor.

The building was dark.

Ethan stopped the car.

Mia looked at him.

“What if Lily is hurt?”

“We’ll get her out.”

“What if Robert is there?”

“He’ll be there.”

“Then what?”

Ethan took her hand.

“Then we face him.”

They entered through the back door.

Inside, they heard voices.

Robert.

Margaret.

And Lily.

Mia followed Ethan quietly.

They reached the main room.

Lily was tied to a chair.

Robert stood behind her.

Margaret stood nearby.

Mia stepped forward.

“Let her go.”

Everyone turned.

Robert smiled.

“I knew you’d come.”

Ethan stepped beside Mia.

“You’ve lost.”

Robert laughed.

“Have I?”

“You don’t have the company.”

“I have Ethan.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You don’t have me.”

Robert looked at him.

“You are my son.”

Ethan froze.

“Yes.”

“And you belong to me.”

“No.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“I belong to myself.”

Robert’s face became cold.

“You were supposed to inherit everything.”

“I don’t want it.”

“Then what do you want?”

Ethan looked at Mia.

“Her.”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

Robert laughed.

“Love.”

He shook his head.

“Love is what makes people weak.”

Mia stepped forward.

“No.”

Robert looked at her.

“Love is what made my mother protect me.”

She pointed toward Lily.

“Love is what made her protect my sister.”

Then she looked at Ethan.

“And love is what made him come back for me.”

Robert’s expression changed.

“You think love will save you?”

Mia nodded.

“I know it will.”

Robert pulled out a gun.

Ethan immediately stepped in front of Mia.

“Don’t.”

Robert raised it.

“One step closer and he dies.”

Mia froze.

Ethan looked at her.

“Don’t move.”

Robert smiled.

“You see?”

He looked at Mia.

“Love makes you weak.”

Suddenly, Lily kicked the chair backward.

The chair hit Robert.

The gun fell.

Ethan rushed forward.

Margaret screamed.

Everything happened at once.

Daniel entered the room.

Police officers followed him.

Robert was immediately arrested.

Margaret tried to run.

But Lily stood in her way.

“You took twenty years from me.”

Margaret froze.

Lily stared at her.

“Twenty years.”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“I saved you.”

“No.”

Lily shook her head.

“You saved yourself.”

The police took Margaret away.

Robert was arrested too.

For the first time in twenty years, the secrets were finally exposed.

The truth about Daniel’s murder came out.

The truth about Elena’s death came out.

The truth about Lily’s disappearance came out.

And the truth about the inheritance was finally known.

But Mia still had one person left to find.

Her mother.

Sarah.

Three days later, Mia stood outside a small house near the sea.

She had seen it before.

In photographs.

In her mother’s drawings.

In her childhood dreams.

The door opened.

Mia froze.

Sarah stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Mia couldn’t speak.

Neither could Sarah.

Then Sarah whispered:

“Mia.”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Mom.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

“My baby.”

Mia ran to her.

They held each other.

Twenty years of pain disappeared into one embrace.

“I’m sorry,” Sarah whispered.

Mia cried.

“I thought you left me.”

“I never left you.”

“You gave Lily away.”

Sarah’s body shook.

“I know.”

“Why?”

“To save you.”

Mia pulled away.

“You should have saved both of us.”

“I tried.”

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I failed.”

Mia looked at her mother.

Then she saw Lily standing behind her.

Lily slowly stepped forward.

Sarah looked at her.

“My daughter.”

Lily stared.

For a moment, there was anger.

Pain.

Confusion.

Then Lily hugged her.

Sarah broke down.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily cried.

“I know.”

Mia joined them.

Three women.

One family.

Finally together.

Later that evening, Mia sat outside the house.

The sea was calm.

Ethan joined her.

He sat beside her.

“How are you?”

Mia smiled.

“Happy.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Even after everything?”

Mia looked at him.

“Especially after everything.”

Ethan smiled.

Mia leaned against him.

“I have a question.”

“What?”

“Our relationship.”

“What about it?”

“Is it still fake?”

Ethan laughed.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Very.”

“What if I want to end it?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Then I’ll ask you to marry me.”

Mia stared.

“What?”

Ethan suddenly looked nervous.

“I mean…”

He reached into his pocket.

Mia’s eyes widened.

“Ethan.”

He pulled out a small ring.

“I bought this months ago.”

Mia couldn’t speak.

“Before I knew the truth.”

He took her hand.

“I bought it because I thought our fake relationship would end.”

Mia smiled.

“And now?”

“Now I know I don’t want it to end.”

He got down on one knee.

Mia covered her mouth.

“Ethan.”

“I know our story is complicated.”

She laughed through her tears.

“That’s an understatement.”

“I know we started with a lie.”

He looked into her eyes.

“But every moment after that became real.”

Mia’s tears fell.

“I love you.”

Ethan held the ring.

“Will you marry me?”

Mia didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.”

Ethan smiled.

“Yes?”

“Yes!”

He stood.

Mia threw her arms around him.

They laughed.

They cried.

And then they kissed.

Not as a fake couple.

Not as strangers.

Not as two people pretending.

But as two people who had survived every lie that had tried to separate them.

Months later, the wedding was held beside the sea.

The entire family was there.

Sarah.

Lily.

Daniel.

And the people who had helped bring the truth to light.

Mia stood in her wedding dress.

She looked at Lily.

“Can you believe this?”

Lily smiled.

“Honestly?”

“What?”

“Our family is completely crazy.”

Mia laughed.

“You’re not wrong.”

Lily hugged her.

“I’m glad I found you.”

Mia held her tightly.

“I’m glad you found me.”

Then the music began.

Mia walked toward Ethan.

He stood waiting.

His eyes never left hers.

When she reached him, he whispered:

“You look beautiful.”

Mia smiled.

“And you look nervous.”

“I am.”

“Why?”

“Because this time, it’s real.”

Mia laughed.

“You still think this is fake?”

“Never again.”

The ceremony began.

When it was time for their vows, Ethan took Mia’s hands.

“I once believed love was something that happened to other people.”

He looked into her eyes.

“Then I met you.”

Mia smiled.

“You were supposed to be my fake girlfriend.”

Everyone laughed.

Ethan continued.

“But somewhere between the lies, the secrets, and the impossible truth, you became the most real thing in my life.”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I promise to love you when life is easy.”

He squeezed her hands.

“And when it isn’t.”

“I promise to choose you.”

“Every day.”

Mia looked at him.

“My turn.”

She took a breath.

“I spent my whole life believing that love was something that people could take away.”

Her voice trembled.

“People left.”

“People lied.”

“People disappeared.”

She looked at Lily.

“But then I found my sister.”

She looked at Sarah.

“My mother.”

Then she looked at Ethan.

“And I found you.”

Ethan smiled.

“You were never part of the plan.”

Mia laughed.

“Neither were you.”

Everyone laughed.

“But maybe that’s the beautiful thing.”

She held his hands.

“The best things in life are sometimes the things we never planned.”

Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.

Mia smiled.

“I choose you.”

“Today.”

“Tomorrow.”

“And every day after that.”

The ceremony ended with a kiss.

A real kiss.

A promise.

A new beginning.

Years later, Mia sometimes thought about the fake relationship that had changed her life.

It had started as a simple arrangement.

Two people pretending to be in love.

But somewhere along the way, the pretending had disappeared.

The secrets had been uncovered.

The family had been reunited.

Lily had built a life of her own.

Sarah had finally found peace.

And Mia had found the one person she had never expected to love.

Ethan.

They had faced lies.

They had faced betrayal.

They had faced secrets that could have destroyed them.

But love had survived.

One evening, Mia stood on the balcony of their home.

Ethan came up behind her.

He wrapped his arms around her.

“Thinking again?”

Mia smiled.

“Always.”

“About what?”

“Us.”

“That’s dangerous.”

She laughed.

“Why?”

“Because you’re going to realize how lucky you are.”

Mia turned around.

“I already know.”

Ethan kissed her forehead.

“Do you remember our first date?”

“Yes.”

“You hated me.”

“I did not.”

“You absolutely did.”

“You were annoying.”

“And now?”

Mia smiled.

“Still annoying.”

Ethan laughed.

Mia rested her head against his chest.

Then she whispered:

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For choosing me.”

Ethan looked down at her.

“I didn’t choose you.”

Mia frowned.

“What?”

“You chose me first.”

She smiled.

“Maybe.”

Ethan kissed her.

And as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon, Mia finally understood something.

Love didn’t always arrive in the way people expected.

Sometimes it began with a lie.

Sometimes it was hidden behind fear.

Sometimes it survived impossible secrets.

But when love was real…

It found a way home.

And theirs had finally found its way home.
