THE SECRET BENEATH THE CLOCK TOWER

Chapter 5

THE SECRET BENEATH THE CLOCK TOWER

THE MIDNIGHT CARNIVAL OF CREEPY CLOWNS · August 4, 2026

Milo Pockets was falling.

That was the first thing he noticed.

The second thing he noticed was that he was screaming.

The third thing he noticed was that Nora was screaming louder.

The fourth thing he noticed was that Benny was screaming even louder than Nora.

And the fifth thing…

Professor Pickle was singing.

“WHY ARE YOU SINGING?” Milo shouted.

“I’M TERRIFIED!”

“THEN SCREAM!”

“I ALREADY DID!”

They continued falling.

Below them was the Midnight Carnival.

The Ferris wheel was breaking apart.

The roller coaster tracks twisted like snakes.

The carousel spun wildly.

The giant clocks exploded one after another.

BOOM!

BOOM!

BOOM!

Milo looked down.

“WE’RE GOING TO DIE!”

Nora grabbed his coat.

“STOP SAYING THAT!”

“WHY?”

“BECAUSE YOU KEEP BEING WRONG!”

Milo blinked.

“What?”

“We haven’t died yet!”

“That’s true.”

“Then stop predicting it!”

“Okay.”

Milo took a deep breath.

“We are definitely going to survive.”

A giant piece of the Ferris wheel flew past them.

Milo screamed.

“I TAKE IT BACK!”

Suddenly…

Something grabbed Milo’s coat.

He stopped falling.

Nora grabbed Milo.

Benny grabbed Nora.

Professor Pickle grabbed Benny.

Everyone hung in the air.

Milo looked up.

Elias was holding them.

Not the mysterious boy.

Not the clown.

The real Elias.

Or at least…

The memory of him.

Elias looked exhausted.

“Hold on!”

Milo shouted:

“WE ARE HOLDING ON!”

Elias flew downward.

The four friends followed.

They landed on the roof of the Clock Tower.

THUD!

Milo rolled across the roof.

Nora landed beside him.

Benny landed on top of Professor Pickle.

Professor Pickle shouted:

“GET OFF ME!”

Benny jumped up.

“Sorry!”

Milo slowly stood.

He looked around.

The Clock Tower was enormous.

Its walls were covered in strange symbols.

The giant clock above them had no numbers.

Instead…

It had four names.

MILO.

NORA.

BENNY.

PICKLE.

Milo stared.

“Why are our names on the clock?”

Elias appeared behind them.

“Because the clock remembers you.”

Milo turned.

“You keep saying strange things.”

Elias shrugged.

“It’s been a strange night.”

Nora stepped forward.

“Tell us the truth.”

Elias looked at her.

“About what?”

“Everything.”

Elias smiled.

“That’s a lot.”

“We have time.”

Elias looked at the clock.

“Not much.”

Milo pointed at him.

“Stop doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Speaking in mysterious sentences.”

Elias laughed.

“Fine.”

He walked toward the clock.

“Twenty years ago, you four came to this carnival.”

Milo frowned.

“We were children.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To save me.”

Nora stared.

“You were trapped here.”

Elias nodded.

“My brother disappeared.”

Milo’s eyes widened.

“Your little brother.”

“Yes.”

“The boy with the golden key.”

Elias nodded.

“His name was Leo.”

Milo looked at the mysterious boy.

“Leo?”

Elias nodded.

“That’s him.”

Milo stared.

“But why does he look like a child?”

Elias sighed.

“Because the carnival froze his time.”

Nora frowned.

“Why?”

“To keep him young forever.”

Benny looked horrified.

“That’s terrible.”

Elias nodded.

“The Ringmaster needed someone to control the carnival.”

Milo looked at the clock.

“And Leo was chosen?”

“Yes.”

“Why him?”

“Because he had the golden key.”

Milo stared at the key.

“What does it do?”

Elias answered:

“It opens the Heart of the Carnival.”

Milo looked confused.

“The Heart?”

Elias pointed toward the tower.

“Under this clock.”

A loud sound came from below.

BOOM!

Everyone jumped.

Milo looked down.

“What was that?”

Elias became serious.

“The Ringmaster.”

Milo frowned.

“How do we stop him?”

Elias looked at the four friends.

“Remember.”

Milo blinked.

“Remember what?”

“Everything.”

Nora stepped forward.

“How?”

Elias pointed at the clock.

“The clock is hiding your memories.”

Benny stared.

“Can we get them back?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Each of you must touch your name.”

Milo looked at the clock.

“That’s it?”

Elias nodded.

“Yes.”

Milo stepped forward.

He touched his name.

MILO.

The clock began glowing.

Suddenly…

Milo saw a memory.

He was eight years old.

He was standing inside the carnival.

Nora was beside him.

Benny was laughing.

Professor Pickle was younger.

And Elias was there.

Milo remembered.

They had come to the carnival together.

They were searching for Leo.

Milo watched the memory.

Young Milo shouted:

“We’ll find him!”

Young Elias smiled.

“Thank you.”

Then…

The Ringmaster appeared.

Young Milo stepped forward.

“Give him back!”

The Ringmaster laughed.

“You don’t understand.”

Young Milo shouted:

“We’re not afraid!”

The Ringmaster raised his hand.

A bright light appeared.

Young Milo fell.

The memory ended.

Milo opened his eyes.

He was back in the Clock Tower.

Nora looked at him.

“What did you see?”

Milo swallowed.

“I remember.”

“What?”

“We came here to rescue Leo.”

Nora nodded.

“Yes.”

“But the Ringmaster stopped us.”

“Yes.”

Milo looked at Elias.

“Then what happened?”

Elias stared at him.

“The carnival erased your memories.”

Nora touched her name.

NORA.

The clock glowed again.

She gasped.

Her memory returned.

She was standing in the carnival.

Young Nora was holding a small book.

Inside it was a map.

She was pointing toward the Clock Tower.

“We have to get there!”

Young Milo nodded.

Young Benny looked nervous.

Professor Pickle was carrying something.

The golden key.

Young Nora shouted:

“Give us the key!”

Professor Pickle shook his head.

“No.”

Young Milo stared.

“Why?”

Professor Pickle looked terrified.

“Because the Ringmaster will use it.”

Young Nora stepped forward.

“We need it to save Leo.”

Professor Pickle looked at the Clock Tower.

“I know.”

Suddenly…

The Ringmaster appeared.

Young Professor Pickle dropped the key.

The Ringmaster picked it up.

He smiled.

“Thank you.”

Young Nora screamed:

“NO!”

The memory ended.

Nora opened her eyes.

She looked at Professor Pickle.

“You had the key.”

Professor Pickle nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you give it to us?”

Professor Pickle looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid.”

Nora became angry.

“You betrayed us.”

Professor Pickle closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Milo stared.

“Professor…”

Professor Pickle looked at him.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“You weren’t.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because the Ringmaster promised he would let you leave.”

Nora stared.

“And did he?”

Professor Pickle shook his head.

“No.”

Benny stepped forward.

He touched his name.

BENNY.

The clock glowed.

His memory returned.

Benny saw himself as a child.

He was standing beside the Memory Engine.

He was holding a strange device.

Young Milo stood beside him.

Young Nora stood beside him.

Young Professor Pickle was behind them.

Benny was crying.

Milo was shouting:

“FIX IT!”

Young Benny shook his head.

“I can’t!”

“You built it!”

“Not this one!”

Nora shouted:

“Then what do we do?”

Young Benny looked at the Memory Engine.

“We need someone to stay behind.”

Everyone froze.

Young Milo stared.

“What?”

Benny whispered:

“The carnival needs a memory keeper.”

Young Nora shook her head.

“No.”

Young Benny looked at Leo.

Leo was holding the golden key.

“I’ll do it.”

Everyone screamed.

“No!”

Leo smiled.

“It’s okay.”

Young Milo grabbed his hand.

“We’ll come back.”

Leo nodded.

“Promise?”

Young Milo nodded.

“I promise.”

The memory ended.

Benny opened his eyes.

He was crying.

Milo stepped closer.

“You knew.”

Benny nodded.

“We promised Leo we’d come back.”

Milo looked at Elias.

“But we forgot.”

Elias nodded.

“Yes.”

Milo’s voice became quiet.

“I’m sorry.”

Elias smiled.

“You were children.”

“But we forgot him.”

“The carnival made you forget.”

Nora stepped forward.

“Then we’ll remember him now.”

Finally…

Professor Pickle stepped toward the clock.

He touched his name.

PICKLE.

The clock shook.

A bright light filled the tower.

Professor Pickle saw his memory.

Twenty years ago…

He stood before the Ringmaster.

He was holding the golden key.

The Ringmaster spoke.

“Give it to me.”

Professor Pickle refused.

“No.”

The Ringmaster raised his hand.

“You want to save the children?”

Professor Pickle nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then give me the key.”

Professor Pickle looked at Milo.

At Nora.

At Benny.

At Leo.

He dropped the key.

The Ringmaster picked it up.

Professor Pickle whispered:

“Let them go.”

The Ringmaster smiled.

“They will forget.”

Professor Pickle’s face changed.

“No.”

“They will forget everything.”

“No!”

“They will forget Leo.”

Professor Pickle screamed:

“NO!”

The memory ended.

Professor Pickle fell to his knees.

Milo stared.

“That’s what happened.”

Professor Pickle nodded.

“I tried to stop him.”

Nora asked:

“Then why did you tell us you couldn’t remember?”

Professor Pickle looked at her.

“Because I couldn’t.”

Milo frowned.

“What?”

“The Ringmaster erased my memory too.”

Milo stared.

“Then how did you remember now?”

Professor Pickle pointed toward the clock.

“Because the four of us remembered together.”

Suddenly…

The clock began spinning.

TICK.

TICK.

TICK.

The four names disappeared.

A new name appeared.

LEO.

Milo stared.

“He’s next.”

Elias nodded.

“The clock is ready.”

“Ready for what?”

“To return his memory.”

Nora stepped forward.

“Then let’s do it.”

Elias shook his head.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because Leo isn’t the one who needs his memory.”

Milo frowned.

“Then who?”

Elias looked at him.

“You.”

Milo froze.

“Me?”

Elias nodded.

“Your memory is the key.”

Milo stared.

“Why?”

“Because you’re the one who made the promise.”

Milo swallowed.

“What promise?”

Elias looked toward the door.

“You promised Leo you’d come back.”

Milo remembered.

A little boy.

A golden key.

A promise.

A friendship.

And a night that had been forgotten.

Milo whispered:

“I promised.”

Elias nodded.

“Yes.”

Milo looked at the Clock Tower.

“What happens if I remember everything?”

Elias answered:

“The carnival loses its power.”

Milo stared.

“And Leo?”

“He can leave.”

Nora smiled.

“Then let’s do it.”

Milo stepped toward the clock.

But before he could touch it…

The door exploded.

BOOOOOOM!

Everyone screamed.

Smoke filled the tower.

A figure walked through the broken doorway.

The Ringmaster.

He slowly removed his silver mask.

Underneath was…

A face that made Professor Pickle gasp.

Milo stared.

Nora stared.

Benny stared.

Elias stared.

Professor Pickle whispered:

“No…”

Milo looked at him.

“You know him?”

Professor Pickle nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

Professor Pickle’s voice shook.

“The original owner of the carnival.”

Milo stared at the Ringmaster.

“What’s his name?”

The Ringmaster smiled.

Then he removed his hat.

“My name…”

He stepped forward.

“…is Mr. Midnight.”

The clocks began spinning.

The walls shook.

The entire carnival screamed.

Mr. Midnight raised his hand.

The golden key appeared in his palm.

He looked directly at Milo.

“You promised to return.”

Milo stepped forward.

“Yes.”

Mr. Midnight smiled.

“Then you should have kept your promise.”

Milo frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Mr. Midnight pointed toward the clock.

“You promised to come back for Leo.”

Milo nodded.

“I did.”

“But you didn’t.”

Milo’s face fell.

“We forgot.”

“Exactly.”

Mr. Midnight smiled.

“And now…”

The clock began counting backward.

10.

Milo looked around.

9.

Nora grabbed his hand.

8.

Benny grabbed Nora.

7.

Professor Pickle grabbed Benny.

6.

Elias shouted:

“MILO!”

Milo looked at him.

5.

“REMEMBER!”

4.

Milo closed his eyes.

3.

He remembered Leo.

2.

He remembered the promise.

1.

He remembered everything.

The clock stopped.

Silence.

Milo opened his eyes.

A golden light surrounded him.

Mr. Midnight stepped backward.

“No.”

Milo looked at him.

“Yes.”

Mr. Midnight shook his head.

“You remembered.”

Milo smiled.

“Everything.”

The Clock Tower exploded with light.

The golden key flew from Mr. Midnight’s hand.

It landed in Milo’s.

The entire carnival began shaking.

Mr. Midnight screamed:

“STOP!”

Milo held the key.

“What happens now?”

Elias smiled.

“You open the Heart.”

Milo looked down.

A door appeared beneath the clock.

It was covered in golden symbols.

Milo inserted the key.

CLICK.

The door opened.

A powerful light came from below.

Milo looked at Nora.

“Ready?”

Nora nodded.

Benny swallowed.

“I think so.”

Professor Pickle adjusted his glasses.

“Probably.”

Milo laughed.

“That’s the most confidence you’ve ever shown.”

They stepped toward the door.

But before Milo could enter…

Leo appeared.

The mysterious boy.

He stood at the bottom of the staircase.

For the first time…

He looked happy.

Milo smiled.

“Leo.”

Leo nodded.

“You remembered.”

Milo stepped toward him.

“I’m sorry.”

Leo smiled.

“You came back.”

Milo nodded.

“I promised.”

Leo looked at the golden key.

“Then finish it.”

Milo turned toward the Heart of the Carnival.

The light grew brighter.

Mr. Midnight screamed behind them.

“You cannot destroy my carnival!”

Milo looked back.

“We’re not destroying it.”

Mr. Midnight froze.

“Then what?”

Milo smiled.

“We’re freeing it.”

The Heart began beating.

THUMP.

THUMP.

THUMP.

The entire carnival shook.

The walls cracked.

The clocks shattered.

The Ferris wheel stopped.

The roller coaster collapsed.

And the Midnight Carnival began disappearing.

Milo looked at Leo.

“Come on.”

Leo smiled.

Together…

They stepped into the light.

Behind them…

Mr. Midnight screamed.

And the Clock Tower disappeared.

The entire carnival vanished.

Leaving only…

An empty field.

Silence.

Darkness.

Then…

Morning.

Milo opened his eyes.

He was lying on the grass outside Whispering Wheels.

Nora was beside him.

Benny was sleeping on a bench.

Professor Pickle was snoring.

Milo sat up.

“Where is Leo?”

Nora looked around.

“I don’t know.”

Milo stood.

“Leo!”

A voice answered:

“Here.”

Milo turned.

Leo stood beside the park gates.

But he was no longer a child.

He was a young man.

He smiled.

“I think I’m finally free.”

Milo ran toward him.

They hugged.

Nora smiled.

Benny woke up.

“Did we win?”

Milo looked at him.

“Yes.”

Benny smiled.

“Good.”

Then he looked around.

“Where’s the haunted amusement park?”

Milo pointed.

“It’s gone.”

Benny stared.

“Forever?”

Milo nodded.

Benny smiled.

“Excellent.”

Milo laughed.

Nora looked toward the empty field.

But something bothered her.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Nora pointed toward the ground.

There was a small object lying in the grass.

A silver mask.

Mr. Midnight’s mask.

Milo picked it up.

The mask was cold.

Very cold.

He turned it over.

Written on the inside were four words:

THE CARNIVAL ALWAYS RETURNS.

Milo’s smile disappeared.

Nora stared.

“That’s not good.”

Milo nodded.

“No.”

Suddenly…

The empty field became silent.

A distant bell rang.

DONG.

Everyone froze.

Another bell.

DONG.

Milo looked toward the horizon.

A faint red light appeared.

Then…

A voice whispered:

“ONE NIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH.”

The red light disappeared.

Milo stared.

Benny swallowed.

“Was that…”

Milo nodded.

“Yes.”

Nora asked:

“Mr. Midnight?”

Milo looked at the silver mask.

“I don’t know.”

Leo stepped closer.

“Whatever it was…”

He looked toward the empty field.

“…the carnival isn’t finished with us.”

The wind blew.

The silver mask suddenly cracked.

CRACK.

Milo dropped it.

The mask fell into the grass.

And from somewhere far away…

A familiar clown laughed.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Milo slowly looked at his friends.

“Nobody is going back there.”

Nora nodded.

“Agreed.”

Benny raised his hand.

“Absolutely.”

Professor Pickle nodded.

“Never again.”

A pause.

Then Milo asked:

“Unless someone sends us another mysterious invitation.”

Everyone shouted:

“NO!”

Milo smiled.

“Fine.”

But somewhere beneath the empty field…

A golden clock began ticking.

TICK.

TICK.

TICK.

And deep underground…

A small boy opened his eyes.

He smiled.

And whispered:

“One more ride.”
