The Boy Who Couldn’t Hear Magic

Chapter 1

The Boy Who Couldn’t Hear Magic

The Boy Who Couldn’t Hear Magic · August 5, 2026

Morning sunlight spilled across the floating island of Varellis, turning its white cliffs into rivers of gold. Hundreds of crystal bridges connected homes built on enormous ancient trees, while windmills with glowing blue sails gathered magical currents drifting through the sky.

Children laughed as they chased tiny feathered creatures called Lumas across the streets. Merchants shouted from colorful market stalls. Above them, massive sky whales drifted peacefully through the clouds, their crystal scales reflecting every color of the rainbow.

In this world, everyone could hear magic.

Everyone…

Except one boy.

“Ren! Hurry up!” shouted the old blacksmith from across the street.

“I’m coming!”

Seventeen-year-old Ren grabbed a bundle of iron ingots and sprinted through the crowded market. His black hair was messy as always, and his patched work clothes were stained with soot from the forge.

“Late again,” the blacksmith grumbled.

“I wasn’t late. The sun was.”

“The sun?”

“It rose too early.”

The old man sighed.

“You really have an answer for everything.”

A few nearby workers laughed.

Ren smiled awkwardly.

Humor was easier than explaining why he always felt different.

Every child in Elyndra awakened their magical hearing by the age of ten. They could hear the Echo—the mysterious voice of the world’s magical energy.

Ren never did.

Teachers called him defective.

Nobles called him cursed.

Even children whispered that he had been abandoned by the gods.

Still…

He refused to give up.

Every evening after work, he trained alone.

Sword practice.

Running.

Climbing cliffs.

Studying old books no one else wanted.

If magic wouldn’t choose him…

He would become strong enough that it wouldn’t matter.

At least…

That was what he kept telling himself.

Later that afternoon, the village square erupted into excitement.

“The Kingdom Scouts are here!”

Everyone rushed outside.

Six armored warriors descended from enormous winged beasts.

Silver cloaks fluttered behind them.

Each carried a glowing weapon that hummed with magical energy.

One woman stepped forward.

Captain Seraphine.

One of the youngest commanders in the Sky Kingdom.

“We’re searching for volunteers.”

Her calm voice echoed across the square.

“A newly discovered dungeon has appeared beneath the western ruins.”

Gasps spread instantly.

Legendary dungeons were unpredictable.

Some contained priceless relics.

Others swallowed entire armies.

The captain continued.

“We need laborers, guides, and blacksmith assistants.”

The old blacksmith pushed Ren forward.

“Him.”

“What?!”

“You’re always reading adventure books.”

“I read them because they’re cheaper than therapy.”

Even Captain Seraphine laughed.

“You’ve got courage.”

“I’ve got bad luck.”

“Sometimes those are the same thing.”

The captain smiled.

“You’re hired.”

Ren blinked.

“Seriously?”

“Report tomorrow morning.”

Before he could celebrate—

BOOOOOOOM!

The earth shook violently.

Screams filled the village.

A gigantic crack split the western cliffs.

Something enormous crawled out.

It resembled a wolf.

If wolves were the size of castles.

Black crystal spikes covered its body.

Its glowing crimson eyes swept across the village.

Someone whispered in terror.

“A Ruin Beast…”

Captain Seraphine drew her spear instantly.

“Everyone evacuate!”

The monster roared.

The sound shattered windows.

Entire houses collapsed.

Panic exploded.

People ran in every direction.

Children cried.

Parents searched desperately for their families.

Ren spotted a little girl frozen in fear beneath a collapsing bridge.

Without thinking—

He ran.

“Kid! Move!”

She couldn’t.

The bridge snapped.

Ren threw himself forward.

The falling stones slammed into his back as he pushed the girl clear.

Pain exploded through his body.

But she was alive.

“Run!”

She finally moved.

Ren tried standing.

His legs trembled.

The Ruin Beast noticed him.

Its crimson eyes locked onto the injured boy.

“Oh…”

Ren forced a weak smile.

“That’s… probably bad.”

The monster charged.

Captain Seraphine intercepted it.

Her spear erupted with silver light.

“Second Resonance!”

Thousands of glowing symbols spiraled around her.

The spear became a beam of pure energy.

She struck.

The explosion shook the floating island.

Smoke swallowed everything.

Cheers erupted.

“She defeated it!”

Then…

The smoke moved.

The Ruin Beast walked out.

Barely injured.

Silence.

Even Seraphine’s confident expression faded.

“No…”

The monster opened its mouth.

Dark energy gathered.

“If that attack fires…”

“The whole village…”

Ren looked around.

Too many people were still trapped.

There wasn’t enough time.

His eyes fell upon an abandoned watchtower overlooking the cliff.

An idea formed.

Crazy.

Dangerous.

Possibly suicidal.

Perfect.

He sprinted.

“REN!”

Ignoring the screams behind him, he climbed the tower faster than anyone believed possible.

The beast tracked him.

Good.

“Come on…”

He reached the top.

The ancient bell still hung there.

Rusty.

Broken.

Connected to chains stretching toward the cliff.

Ren grabbed the largest hammer he could lift.

“If this works…”

He swung.

CLANG!

The ancient bell rang.

The chains snapped tight.

Old mechanisms buried inside the mountain awakened after centuries.

Massive stone anchors burst from the cliffs.

The ground beneath the Ruin Beast collapsed.

The monster lost its footing.

It crashed into the canyon below.

The entire mountain shook.

For several seconds…

Nothing.

Then…

The canyon exploded.

The beast climbed back out.

Only now—

It was angry.

“Right…”

Ren sighed.

“That definitely made things worse.”

The monster leaped.

Straight toward him.

Time slowed.

There was nowhere left to run.

Suddenly…

A strange pulse echoed beneath the tower.

Not a sound.

A feeling.

Warm.

Ancient.

Alive.

The floor cracked.

Hidden beneath centuries of stone lay a circular door covered in silver symbols.

No one else seemed to notice it.

The symbols began glowing.

One by one.

Ren stared.

“I’ve… never seen writing like this.”

The massive door slowly opened.

Golden light poured upward.

The Ruin Beast froze in midair.

For the first time…

It looked afraid.

A single ancient sword rested upon a crystal altar below.

Unlike every magical weapon in history…

It made no sound.

Ren reached toward it.

The moment his fingers touched the hilt—

The world disappeared.

He found himself standing inside endless darkness filled with countless floating stars.

A mysterious figure made entirely of silver light stood before him.

Its face could not be seen.

Its voice echoed like thousands speaking together.

“At last…”

“You have arrived.”

Ren stepped backward.

“Who are you?”

The figure raised one glowing hand.

“For seventeen years…”

“The world believed you could not hear magic.”

A pause.

Then came words that shattered everything Ren thought he knew.

“No…”

“It was magic that could not hear you.”

The stars trembled.

The ancient sword burst into brilliant light.

And somewhere far beyond the floating islands of Elyndra…

Something that had slept for ten thousand years…

Opened its eyes.
