The War Between Different Futures

Chapter 3

The War Between Different Futures

THE LAST PLANETARY CLOCK · August 5, 2026

There was no up or down inside the Chrono Engine.

No beginning.

No ending.

Only possibilities.

Arin Solace floated through a sea of forgotten timelines, watching countless versions of reality move around him like glowing rivers.

Every river showed a different future.

A different humanity.

A different Arin.

He saw worlds where humans lived peacefully among the stars.

He saw worlds where machines ruled every planet.

He saw worlds where Earth was never lost.

And he saw worlds where Earth was destroyed before humanity ever reached space.

Arin looked away.

“This is impossible.”

Mira Kael floated beside him.

“No.”

She looked at the endless timelines.

“This is what was always possible.”

Arin turned toward her.

“How can you stay calm?”

Mira smiled sadly.

“I stopped being surprised a long time ago.”

“You have seen all of this?”

“Not all.”

She looked at the infinite paths.

“Only the ones where we failed.”

Kiro floated nearby, scanning the strange environment.

“New discovery.”

Arin looked at the robot.

“What?”

“The laws of physics are currently experiencing confusion.”

Arin raised an eyebrow.

“Physics is confused?”

“Yes.”

Kiro paused.

“Which is understandable because I am also confused.”

For the first time since entering the Chrono Engine, Arin laughed.

A small laugh.

But real.

Mira looked at him.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You laughed.”

“I know.”

“I thought you forgot how.”

Arin became quiet.

Because maybe he had.

A sudden vibration passed through the timelines.

The glowing rivers began moving faster.

Mira’s expression changed.

“What is happening?”

Kiro scanned the area.

“External force detected.”

Arin looked around.

“External force?”

Before Kiro could answer, a massive structure appeared in the distance.

A city.

A city floating between timelines.

Mira stared.

“No…”

Arin noticed her reaction.

“What?”

She whispered:

“The Chrono Citadel.”

The Chrono Citadel was the headquarters of the Chrono Guardians.

A place that existed outside normal time.

It was not built in the past.

It was not built in the future.

It existed between every possible moment.

The city opened.

Thousands of ships emerged.

Darian Voss had followed them.

Arin looked at Mira.

“Can they travel here?”

Mira nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why did we come here?”

She looked away.

“Because I was hoping they couldn’t.”

Arin stared.

“You guessed?”

Mira sighed.

“I remember many futures.”

A pause.

“But not this one.”

The ships surrounded them.

A communication screen appeared.

Commander Darian Voss appeared.

“Arin.”

Arin looked at him.

“You followed us.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Darian looked serious.

“Because you do not understand what you are.”

Arin frowned.

“I’m a person.”

“No.”

Darian shook his head.

“You are an event.”

Silence followed.

Arin did not understand.

“What does that mean?”

Darian answered:

“Every timeline changes when you make a choice.”

Mira looked at him.

“That’s not true.”

Darian turned toward her.

“You know it is.”

He looked back at Arin.

“You are the center point of all possible futures.”

Arin laughed.

“That’s impossible.”

Darian smiled.

“Your father said the same thing.”

Arin froze.

“My father?”

Darian nodded.

“Professor Elias Solace discovered it.”

“What happened to him?”

Darian’s expression changed.

“He tried to protect you.”

Arin stepped closer.

“From what?”

Darian answered:

“From yourself.”

The Chrono Citadel opened a gateway.

Soldiers moved forward.

Mira grabbed Arin’s arm.

“We need to go.”

“Where?”

“To the original timeline.”

Arin looked confused.

“Why?”

“Because that is where the answer is.”

They escaped through a hidden timeline path.

Behind them, Darian watched.

He did not follow.

Not yet.

Because he knew something they did not.

The original timeline was empty.

Completely empty.

No stars.

No planets.

No life.

Only darkness.

Arin looked around.

“This is the future where everything ends?”

Mira nodded.

“Yes.”

They floated through the destroyed universe.

Eventually, they reached Earth.

Or what remained of it.

The planet was frozen.

Dead.

Arin landed on the surface.

He walked through the ruins of humanity’s first home.

“This happened because of me?”

Mira looked down.

“Yes.”

Arin closed his eyes.

“Tell me the truth.”

“I am.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“The whole truth.”

Mira remained silent.

Then she spoke.

“You did not destroy the universe.”

Arin stared.

“What?”

“You saved it.”

He looked confused.

“Then why did everything die?”

“Because every time you tried to save everyone…”

She looked toward the dead Earth.

“You sacrificed more and more of reality.”

Arin whispered:

“I don’t understand.”

Mira stepped closer.

“In every timeline, you create the Chrono Engine.”

She pointed toward the sky.

“In every timeline, you try to fix the past.”

“And?”

“And every correction creates another disaster.”

Arin looked at his hands.

“So I’m trapped.”

“Yes.”

Suddenly, a hologram appeared.

A message.

A message from Professor Elias Solace.

Arin froze.

His father’s face appeared before him.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

“Arin.”

His voice echoed across the dead planet.

“If you are seeing this…”

He looked away.

“…then you have discovered the truth.”

Arin stepped closer.

“Father…”

The recording continued.

“I built the Chrono Engine to prevent humanity’s extinction.”

The image changed.

Showing thousands of destroyed timelines.

“But I discovered something terrifying.”

A pause.

“Time cannot be controlled.”

The hologram looked directly at Arin.

“It can only be chosen.”

Arin listened carefully.

“The greatest danger is not the machine.”

The message flickered.

“It is the person who refuses to accept loss.”

The recording ended.

Arin stood silently.

Because he finally understood.

The enemy was not time.

The enemy was his desire to change everything.

A new signal appeared.

Kiro scanned it.

“Incoming transmission.”

The message opened.

Commander Darian appeared.

But this time, he looked afraid.

“Arin.”

“What?”

Darian looked behind him.

The Chrono Citadel was under attack.

Something was destroying it.

Something moving between timelines.

Mira’s face turned pale.

“No…”

Arin looked at her.

“What is it?”

She whispered:

“The reason every future fails.”

A dark shadow appeared behind Darian.

A voice echoed.

TIME BELONGS TO NO ONE.

The screen went black.

Arin looked at Mira.

“What was that?”

Mira looked terrified.

“The first mistake.”

A pause.

“The thing that created the broken timelines.”

Arin stared into the darkness.

And for the first time…

He realized the universe was not trying to stop him.

Something else was trying to use him.
