The Last Night of Blackwood Hollow

Chapter 5

The Last Night of Blackwood Hollow

THE WHISPERING HOUSE OF BLACKWOOD HOLLOW · August 6, 2026

The words echoed through the underground chamber.

“The real Lucas is beneath Blackwood House.”

Elena felt the world around her disappear.

For fifteen years, she had imagined countless possibilities.

Lucas was dead.

Lucas escaped.

Lucas forgot her.

Lucas started a new life somewhere far away.

But she had never imagined this.

That he was alive.

That he had been trapped.

That he had been waiting.

The figure sitting in the chair slowly stood.

Its appearance changed.

For one moment, it looked like Lucas.

Then it became someone else.

A stranger.

An old man.

A child.

A woman.

Every face it showed belonged to someone who had entered the house.

Someone who had been forgotten.

Daniel stepped in front of Elena.

“The Hollow Man.”

The creature smiled.

“So you remember.”

Elena looked at Daniel.

“The Hollow Man?”

Daniel’s face was filled with fear.

“The thing that lives inside this house.”

The creature walked around the room.

“You humans always give names to things you don’t understand.”

Its voice changed constantly.

Hundreds of voices speaking together.

“Monster.”

“Demon.”

“Ghost.”

“But I am none of those.”

It touched an old photograph.

“I am memory.”

Elena’s hands tightened.

“Where is my brother?”

The creature looked at her.

“Still asking the same question after all these years.”

“Where is he?”

A smile appeared.

“Close.”

“Very close.”

The creature pointed toward a door behind the chair.

A door Elena hadn’t noticed before.

“Behind that door is what you came for.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

“That door doesn’t lead to Lucas.”

“Then where does it lead?”

Daniel whispered:

“To the place where the house keeps what it steals.”

The creature laughed softly.

“Daniel knows.”

Elena turned toward him.

“What does he know?”

Silence.

Then Daniel finally spoke.

“When I entered this house with Claire…”

Elena waited.

“I found that door.”

“What happened?”

“I opened it.”

His voice broke.

“Inside were people.”

“Not dead.”

“Not alive.”

“Just trapped.”

Elena looked toward the door.

“And Claire?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She was there.”

“She was calling my name.”

“She looked exactly like herself.”

“But something was wrong.”

“What?”

Daniel swallowed.

“She didn’t remember me.”

The room became silent.

The Hollow Man smiled.

“Memories are fragile things.”

“It only takes one small crack…”

“And everything falls apart.”

Elena looked at the creature.

“What did you do to my brother?”

The creature tilted its head.

“Your brother was different.”

“How?”

“He resisted.”

“Most humans give themselves to the house.”

“They surrender their pain.”

“They surrender their memories.”

“But Lucas…”

The creature smiled.

“He fought.”

Elena felt tears forming.

“Where is he?”

The creature pointed toward the door.

“Find out.”

Daniel grabbed Elena’s arm.

“Don’t.”

She looked at him.

“My brother has been waiting for me for fifteen years.”

“Then we go together.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What?”

“You came here because of Lucas too.”

He looked surprised.

Elena continued:

“We don’t leave anyone behind.”

For a moment, Daniel said nothing.

Then he nodded.

They opened the door.

The moment they stepped through…

Everything changed.

They were no longer inside a room.

They were standing in a hallway.

A hallway from Elena’s childhood.

Her old home.

Her old memories.

But something was wrong.

The walls were covered with black roots.

The ceiling moved like it was breathing.

The house had created a copy of her past.

A voice came from the end of the hallway.

“Elena.”

She froze.

Lucas.

This time…

Different.

Older.

Tired.

Real.

She ran.

At the end of the hallway was a small room.

Inside was Lucas.

Not a monster.

Not a memory.

A person.

He looked exactly how he should have looked.

Twenty-seven years old.

Tired eyes.

Messy hair.

A face that carried years of loneliness.

Elena stopped.

Neither moved.

Then Lucas whispered:

“You’re real.”

The words broke her heart.

She rushed forward and hugged him.

For the first time in fifteen years…

She held her brother again.

Lucas cried.

“I thought I would never see you again.”

Elena held him tightly.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You came.”

“I knew you would.”

After several minutes, they pulled away.

Elena looked at him.

“Tell me everything.”

Lucas looked around.

“The house took me.”

“Not physically.”

“It took me through memories.”

“It showed me everything I feared.”

“Everything I missed.”

“Everything I regretted.”

“Why didn’t you escape?”

Lucas smiled sadly.

“I tried.”

“Many times.”

“But the house learned me.”

“Every time I found a door…”

“It showed me a memory I didn’t want to lose.”

“What memory?”

Lucas looked at Elena.

“You.”

Elena became emotional.

“It showed me you leaving.”

“It showed me you growing old without me.”

“It showed me a world where I never existed.”

His voice cracked.

“But then I realized something.”

“What?”

“The house wasn’t keeping my memories.”

“It was using them.”

Daniel looked around.

“How do we leave?”

Lucas became serious.

“We don’t.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

Lucas looked at them.

“The house has been awake for weeks.”

“Why?”

Daniel asked.

Lucas answered:

“Because it found a new memory.”

“What memory?”

Lucas looked at Elena.

“Yours.”

A cold feeling entered the room.

Elena understood.

The house had not brought her here because Lucas sent the letter.

The house wanted her.

It wanted her memories.

Her guilt.

Her pain.

Her love.

The walls suddenly shook.

A deep voice filled the hallway.

The Hollow Man.

“Every person who enters gives something.”

The lights flickered.

“A memory.”

The floor cracked.

“A fear.”

The walls moved closer.

“A heart.”

Lucas grabbed Elena’s hand.

“We have to run.”

They moved through the changing hallways.

The house fought back.

Doors disappeared.

Stairs collapsed.

Memories appeared around them.

Elena saw her parents.

Lucas saw childhood moments.

Daniel saw Claire.

The house tried to stop them with everything they loved.

Finally, they reached the entrance hall.

The front door appeared.

Freedom.

Almost.

But standing between them…

Was the Hollow Man.

“You cannot leave.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Why?”

The creature looked at her.

“Because you are the final memory.”

“What does that mean?”

The creature smiled.

“Your brother survived because of you.”

“He held onto one memory.”

“The day you promised to protect him.”

Elena froze.

“But that memory…”

The creature interrupted:

“Is the strongest thing inside this house.”

The walls cracked.

The mansion began collapsing.

The Hollow Man reached toward Elena.

“Give me that memory.”

“Give me the love that kept him alive.”

“And everyone leaves.”

Elena looked at Lucas.

Then Daniel.

Then the house.

She understood.

The creature did not want her fear.

It wanted her love.

Because love was the one thing the house could not create.

Only steal.

“No.”

The Hollow Man stopped.

Elena stepped forward.

“You can take my memories.”

“You can take my pain.”

“But you will never understand this.”

“What?”

She smiled through tears.

“Love isn’t something you keep.”

“It’s something you give.”

The house screamed.

The sound shook the entire forest.

The Hollow Man’s face changed.

Anger.

Fear.

Confusion.

For the first time…

It was afraid.

A crack of light appeared.

The front door opened.

Daniel shouted:

“Now!”

They ran.

Elena grabbed Lucas’s hand.

Daniel followed.

Behind them, Blackwood House began collapsing.

The walls.

The rooms.

The memories.

Everything falling apart.

They reached the outside.

The three of them fell onto the grass.

The mansion stood behind them.

Burning.

But there was no fire.

Only darkness disappearing.

Elena looked back.

For a moment, she saw someone standing in the window.

A figure.

Watching.

Then it vanished.

The sun began rising.

The first sunrise Blackwood Hollow had seen in decades.

Lucas looked at Elena.

“Is it over?”

She looked at the burning house.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel stood quietly.

Because all three of them knew the truth.

Some things do not die.

Some things wait.

Far beneath the ruins of Blackwood House…

A small piece of broken mirror reflected the empty room.

And from inside the glass…

A whisper escaped.

A familiar voice.

Elena’s voice.

“You thought you escaped.”

“But you forgot one thing…”

“I remember you.”
