The Shadow Behind the Mirror
THE WHISPERING HOUSE OF BLACKWOOD HOLLOW · August 6, 2026
The darkness inside Blackwood House was different from ordinary darkness.
It was not simply the absence of light.
It felt alive.
It moved.
It listened.
Elena stood frozen beside Daniel, unable to process his words.
“Because Lucas wasn’t the first person I lost inside Blackwood House.”
For fifteen years, she had believed Daniel Cross was the officer who failed to save her brother.
She had blamed him silently.
She had imagined him as someone who gave up.
Someone who walked away.
But now she realized something worse.
Daniel had been carrying a secret.
A secret connected to the house.
A secret connected to Lucas.
The lights suddenly returned.
The child standing in the hallway was gone.
Only the empty corridor remained.
Elena turned toward Daniel.
“Who was the first person?”
Daniel looked away.
“Daniel.”
His jaw tightened.
“I was nineteen years old when I first came here.”
“Before you became a police officer?”
He nodded.
“My younger sister disappeared.”
Elena felt a chill.
“Your sister?”
“Her name was Claire.”
He looked around the room.
“She was sixteen.”
Daniel walked toward the window.
Outside, the forest was covered in darkness.
“I grew up near Blackwood Hollow. My family knew about the house.”
“Everyone did.”
“But people didn’t talk about it.”
“Why?”
“Because every family in this village had lost someone.”
Elena looked at him.
“And your sister?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“She believed the stories were fake.”
“She thought people created the legend because they were afraid of an abandoned building.”
A painful smile appeared on his face.
“She was like Lucas.”
Elena looked down.
That sounded exactly like her brother.
Curious.
Fearless.
Always searching for answers.
“What happened?”
Daniel was silent for a moment.
Then he said:
“She entered Blackwood House during a storm.”
“Alone?”
“No.”
Elena waited.
Daniel whispered:
“With me.”
The confession shocked her.
“You went inside?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did nobody know?”
“Because I lied.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at the walls.
“Because when I came out…”
“I wasn’t sure if Claire came with me.”
The words made Elena uncomfortable.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“The house doesn’t always take people.”
“Sometimes…”
“It takes parts of them.”
A sound interrupted them.
A soft humming.
A child’s song.
Elena recognized it.
Her mother used to sing it.
She slowly turned.
The sound came from a mirror hanging on the wall.
An old mirror covered with cracks.
But the reflection inside it was wrong.
The room appeared normal.
Daniel appeared normal.
But Elena…
She was not alone.
A figure stood behind her reflection.
Tall.
Thin.
Motionless.
Elena turned around.
Nothing.
She looked back at the mirror.
The figure was still there.
Behind her reflection.
Not behind her.
Inside the glass.
Daniel stepped closer.
“No.”
“What?”
“Don’t look at it too long.”
“Why?”
“Because it learns.”
Elena stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel’s expression was serious.
“The mirror is one of the oldest things in this house.”
“What does it show?”
“Your fear.”
The figure in the mirror moved.
Slowly.
Its head tilted.
Then Elena noticed something terrifying.
It was wearing her face.
She stepped back.
The reflection smiled.
But Elena wasn’t smiling.
The mirror version whispered:
“You left him.”
Her blood turned cold.
“No.”
“You left Lucas.”
The words hurt because they were the exact thought she had carried for fifteen years.
She should have followed him.
She should have stopped him.
She should have protected him.
The mirror knew.
The reflection continued.
“You were older.”
“You were supposed to protect him.”
“You failed.”
Elena covered her ears.
“Stop.”
Daniel grabbed her shoulder.
“Don’t listen.”
But the mirror kept speaking.
“You moved on.”
“You built a career.”
“You wrote stories about strangers…”
“While your brother waited.”
Tears filled Elena’s eyes.
Because the words were cruel.
And because part of her believed them.
Suddenly, the mirror cracked.
A deep crack appeared across the glass.
Then another.
Then hundreds.
The reflection disappeared.
The mirror shattered.
But the pieces did not fall.
They remained floating in the air.
Each piece showing a different memory.
Elena saw herself at twenty years old.
Running through the rain.
Calling Lucas’s name.
She saw herself searching.
Crying.
Begging police officers to continue looking.
Then another piece changed.
She saw herself years later.
Laughing.
Traveling.
Living.
The mirror whispered:
“You forgot.”
“No.”
Elena shook her head.
“I survived.”
The floating glass pieces stopped.
For the first time…
The house became silent.
Daniel looked at her.
“You resisted it.”
“How?”
He looked at the broken mirror.
“Because you accepted the memory.”
“What?”
“The house feeds on guilt.”
“It wants you to believe you are only your worst moment.”
A loud sound echoed through the mansion.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
Like something massive moving beneath them.
The floor trembled.
Daniel looked terrified.
“We need to move.”
“What was that?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
They ran through the hallway.
The house changed around them.
Doors appeared.
Walls moved.
The mansion was no longer hiding its anger.
They reached a large underground staircase.
Elena stopped.
“We were never here before.”
Daniel looked down.
At the bottom was a door.
Black.
Ancient.
Covered with strange symbols.
Above it were carved words:
THE FIRST MEMORY
Daniel became pale.
“No.”
“What?”
“We shouldn’t open that.”
“Why?”
“Because this is where everything began.”
Before they could move away…
The door opened by itself.
Inside was a room filled with thousands of objects.
A child’s toy.
An old photograph.
A broken watch.
A wedding ring.
Every object belonged to someone who disappeared.
A room of memories.
In the center was a chair.
And sitting on it…
Was Lucas.
Older.
Not twelve years old anymore.
He looked around twenty-seven.
The same age he would be now.
Elena stopped breathing.
“Lucas…”
He looked up.
Tears filled his eyes.
“Elena.”
She ran toward him.
But Daniel grabbed her.
“Wait.”
Lucas looked at Daniel.
“You still don’t trust me?”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Because I know what you are.”
Lucas’s expression changed.
“What?”
Daniel whispered:
“You aren’t Lucas.”
The figure smiled.
Slowly.
The same unnatural smile.
The house shook.
And Lucas whispered:
“You’re right.”
Elena felt her heart break.
“Then where is my brother?”
The figure looked at her.
And answered:
“He has been waiting for you…”
“…inside the house.”
The walls began whispering.
Thousands of voices.
And one sentence repeated again and again:
“The real Lucas is beneath Blackwood House.”
