Chapter 5

Across the Ocean

THE PEARL OF OUR HEARTS · August 10, 2026

The morning Kai left for his six-month training program was quiet.

There was no storm.

No heavy rain.

No dramatic goodbye.

The sea was calm, almost as if it knew that two hearts were about to be tested by distance.

Kai stood at the harbor with his suitcase beside him.

His parents had come to say goodbye.

Aria stood a few steps away, holding back her tears.

Kai hugged his mother first.

“Take care of yourself.”

Lia smiled.

“You too.”

Then Daniel placed his hands on Kai’s shoulders.

“Work hard.”

“I will.”

“And remember what I told you.”

Kai smiled.

“Come home.”

Daniel nodded.

“Always.”

Finally, Kai turned toward Aria.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Six months suddenly felt like an entire lifetime.

Aria stepped closer.

“I hate this.”

Kai smiled sadly.

“Me too.”

“You’ll call?”

“Every day.”

“Even when you’re tired?”

“Especially when I’m tired.”

She looked into his eyes.

“And when you’re busy?”

“I’ll make time.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

Kai took her hands.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

He kissed her forehead.

Then he whispered,

“Wait for me.”

Aria smiled through her tears.

“I will.”

Kai picked up his suitcase and boarded the boat that would take him toward the city and eventually to another country.

Aria stood at the harbor until he disappeared from sight.

She didn’t know it yet, but those six months would become the hardest and most important months of their relationship.

The first month was easy.

Kai called every evening.

Sometimes they talked for hours.

He told Aria about his classes.

She told him about the conservation project.

He showed her pictures of the places he visited.

She sent him photographs of the sea near their village.

They laughed.

They missed each other.

But they were happy.

One night, Kai called her from his small apartment.

“Look.”

He turned the camera toward the window.

“Snow.”

Aria stared.

“I’ve never seen snow.”

“I’ll bring some home.”

She laughed.

“How exactly?”

“I’ll figure it out.”

“You’re ridiculous.”

“But you love me.”

“I do.”

He smiled.

“I miss you.”

“I miss you too.”

For a while, distance didn’t feel so terrible.

Then the second month arrived.

Kai’s schedule became busier.

His training sessions lasted from morning until evening.

There were research projects.

Fieldwork.

Examinations.

He still called Aria.

But sometimes he was too tired to talk.

One night, Aria waited until midnight.

No call.

She looked at her phone.

Nothing.

She finally went to sleep.

The next morning, she woke up to a message.

I’m sorry. I fell asleep.

She smiled.

It’s okay.

But it wasn’t completely okay.

The distance had begun to create small cracks.

Neither noticed how quickly those cracks could grow.

During the third month, Aria received an opportunity of her own.

A marine research company offered her a position in another city.

It was an excellent opportunity.

She wanted it.

But she was afraid to tell Kai.

When she finally did, he became quiet.

“You want to move?”

“For the job.”

“How far?”

“Three hours from the village.”

Kai looked away.

“That’s good.”

“You don’t sound happy.”

“I am.”

“You are?”

“Of course.”

Aria became silent.

“I thought you would be excited.”

“I am excited.”

But there was something in his voice.

Something distant.

Aria understood.

“You don’t want me to go.”

Kai sighed.

“I want you to follow your dreams.”

“Then what’s wrong?”

“I guess I’m scared.”

“Of what?”

“That we’re becoming strangers.”

Aria’s eyes filled with tears.

“We’re not.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I still love you.”

Kai looked at the screen.

“I love you too.”

“Then trust us.”

He nodded.

“I’ll try.”

The fourth month was harder.

Their conversations became shorter.

Not because they loved each other less.

Because life was becoming complicated.

One evening, Kai called.

Aria answered immediately.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

“You sound tired.”

“I am.”

“Did you eat?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Neither knew what to say.

Finally, Kai asked,

“How was your day?”

“Busy.”

“Mine too.”

Another silence.

Then Aria whispered,

“I miss when we had nothing to talk about and still talked for hours.”

Kai smiled sadly.

“Me too.”

She looked down.

“Do you think this is working?”

Kai’s heart tightened.

“What?”

“Us.”

He remained silent.

Aria immediately regretted asking.

“Forget it.”

“No.”

Kai took a breath.

“I think we’re just tired.”

“Maybe.”

“Distance is difficult.”

“I know.”

“But difficult doesn’t mean impossible.”

Aria smiled weakly.

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

A week later, something unexpected happened.

Kai received an email.

His training program had been extended.

Six months would become nine.

He stared at the message.

His first thought was Aria.

He called her immediately.

She answered.

“Hey.”

“I have news.”

“Good or bad?”

“I’m not sure.”

“What happened?”

“My training has been extended.”

“For how long?”

“Three more months.”

Silence.

Aria closed her eyes.

Nine months.

Not six.

“Okay.”

Kai could hear the disappointment in her voice.

“I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to apologize.”

“I don’t want this.”

“I know.”

“Aria…”

“It’s okay.”

But her voice broke.

“No, it isn’t.”

She wiped away a tear.

“I miss you.”

“I miss you too.”

“I just want you here.”

“I know.”

They stayed on the phone without speaking.

Sometimes love didn’t need words.

Sometimes two people simply needed to know the other person was still there.

Then came the fifth month.

Aria began working at the research company.

Her days became busy.

Kai’s training became harder.

Their calls became less frequent.

One evening, Aria returned home late and saw several missed calls from Kai.

She immediately called him.

He answered.

“Where were you?”

“Work.”

“You didn’t tell me.”

“I didn’t know I had to.”

Kai became quiet.

“That’s not what I meant.”

Aria sighed.

“I’m tired, Kai.”

“So am I.”

“I don’t want to fight.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then stop asking questions like you don’t trust me.”

Kai stared at the phone.

“I trust you.”

“Then trust me.”

“I do.”

“Good.”

The call ended.

Both of them sat alone.

Both were hurt.

Both were angry.

And both were too stubborn to call again.

Three days passed.

No calls.

No messages.

Aria checked her phone constantly.

Kai did the same.

Finally, Aria received a message.

I’m sorry.

She stared at it.

Then another message arrived.

I don’t want pride to destroy what distance couldn’t.

Her eyes filled with tears.

She immediately called him.

He answered on the first ring.

Neither spoke.

Then Aria whispered,

“I love you.”

Kai closed his eyes.

“I love you too.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Me too.”

“I don’t want to lose you.”

“You won’t.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Because I’m coming home.”

Aria froze.

“When?”

“Next week.”

Her heart jumped.

“But your training…”

“It’s finished.”

“You said three more months.”

“I completed it early.”

She laughed through her tears.

“You didn’t tell me.”

“I wanted to surprise you.”

“Don’t ever do that again.”

“Why?”

“Because I almost cried.”

“You are crying.”

“Shut up.”

Kai laughed.

For the first time in weeks, they laughed together.

A week later, Aria stood at the harbor.

The same harbor where Kai had left months earlier.

The same place where she had promised to wait.

The boat appeared in the distance.

Her heart began racing.

Then she saw him.

Kai stepped onto the dock.

He looked tired.

Older.

But when he saw her, his entire face changed.

He smiled.

Aria ran toward him.

He dropped his bag.

She threw her arms around him.

For several moments, they said nothing.

They simply held each other.

“I missed you,” Kai whispered.

“I missed you more.”

“I don’t think that’s possible.”

She pulled back.

“You look terrible.”

He laughed.

“So do you.”

She hit his arm.

“That wasn’t romantic.”

“I’ve been away for nine months. Give me time.”

She smiled.

Then Kai took her hand.

“I brought you something.”

“What?”

He opened his suitcase.

Inside was a small glass container.

Snow.

Aria stared.

“You actually did it?”

“I promised.”

She laughed.

“You kept snow?”

“For you.”

She looked at him.

“You’re crazy.”

“I know.”

She hugged him again.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

That evening, they walked along the beach.

The moon reflected across the water.

Kai stopped.

“Aria.”

She turned.

“I have something important to ask.”

She smiled.

“What?”

“I’ve spent nine months thinking about our future.”

He took her hands.

“I don’t want us to keep saying someday.”

Her eyes widened.

“What are you saying?”

“I want to build my life with you.”

He reached into his pocket.

Aria’s eyes filled with tears.

But before he could open the small box, a voice came from behind them.

“Kai.”

They turned.

It was Daniel.

He was holding an envelope.

His face was serious.

“There’s something you need to know.”

Kai frowned.

“What happened?”

Daniel handed him the envelope.

“It came for you while you were away.”

Kai opened it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then his expression changed.

Aria looked at him.

“What is it?”

Kai slowly looked up.

“It’s from the company.”

“What do they want?”

He swallowed.

“They’re offering me a permanent position.”

Aria’s heart sank.

“Where?”

Kai looked toward the ocean.

“Overseas.”

The future they had just begun imagining suddenly seemed uncertain again.

And this time, the choice would not be about six months.

It would be about the rest of their lives.
