The Woman From His Past
THE DAY YOU STOPPED WAITING · August 12, 2026
Maya woke up the next morning with an unfamiliar feeling in her chest.
Hope.
It frightened her.
For three years, she had survived by convincing herself that hope was something dangerous.
Hope had kept her waiting.
Hope had made her believe Adrian would return.
Hope had made every silent night harder.
But yesterday had been different.
For the first time, she wasn’t hoping that Adrian would come back.
He already had.
Now she had to decide whether there was still a place for him in her life.
She smiled as she remembered the river.
His hand holding hers.
The quiet way he had looked at her.
Then her smile disappeared.
She remembered the woman across the street.
Who was she?
And why had she been watching them?
Maya tried to ignore the thought.
She couldn’t.
At noon, Adrian called.
“Can I see you?”
Maya hesitated.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“You sound worried.”
“I am.”
“Why?”
“Because there’s something I should have told you.”
Her heart sank.
“About what?”
“About my past.”
Maya became silent.
“Where are you?”
“The café.”
“I’ll come.”
When Maya arrived, Adrian was already waiting.
He looked serious.
She sat across from him.
“Tell me.”
Adrian took a deep breath.
“There was someone before you.”
Maya’s heart tightened.
“Before me?”
“Yes.”
“Someone you loved?”
He looked down.
“Not the way I loved you.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Her name is Elena.”
Maya said nothing.
“She was my father’s business partner’s daughter.”
“Were you together?”
“For a short time.”
“How short?”
“Four months.”
Maya nodded slowly.
“Why did you break up?”
“She wanted something I couldn’t give her.”
“What?”
“A future.”
Maya looked away.
“And now she’s back?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She wants the company.”
Maya frowned.
“What does that have to do with you?”
“Everything.”
He leaned forward.
“After my father died, his business was divided between several people. Elena’s father owned part of it. When I took over, there were agreements I didn’t fully understand.”
“And?”
“And Elena believes I owe her family.”
Maya looked into his eyes.
“Do you?”
“No.”
“Then why are you worried?”
“Because she knows how to hurt me.”
Maya’s expression softened.
“How?”
“She knows about you.”
Maya froze.
“What?”
“She knows I left because of you.”
“But nobody knew.”
“She found out.”
“How?”
Adrian hesitated.
“I told her.”
Maya’s heart sank.
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
“Why?”
“Because she was helping my family.”
Maya stood.
“You told another woman about me?”
“I had to.”
“No. You didn’t.”
“Maya, listen—”
“You disappeared from my life, but somehow you still had time to tell another woman about us?”
“She was helping my mother.”
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t care.”
“I know.”
“Do you know what it feels like to spend three years thinking you meant nothing to someone?”
Adrian stood.
“You never meant nothing.”
“Then why did you make me feel like I did?”
“I was wrong.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true.”
Maya turned away.
“I don’t know if I can do this.”
Adrian’s voice softened.
“Do what?”
“Love you again.”
Silence.
The words hung between them.
Maya wiped her tears.
“I thought seeing you would make everything clear.”
“And?”
“It made everything worse.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“I don’t want to lose you again.”
“You already lost me once.”
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“And I’m scared that I’ll lose myself if I let you back in.”
That sentence broke him.
He reached for her hand.
She let him.
“I won’t ask you to trust me today.”
He gently held her fingers.
“But please don’t punish yourself for still loving me.”
Maya closed her eyes.
“I hate that I still do.”
“I don’t.”
She opened her eyes.
“Why?”
“Because loving you is the one thing I never regretted.”
She cried.
Adrian pulled her gently into his arms.
For a moment, she resisted.
Then she gave in.
She rested her head against his chest.
His heartbeat was fast.
So was hers.
“I missed this,” she whispered.
“I missed you.”
“I don’t want to lose myself again.”
“You won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because this time, I’ll hold your hand without holding you back.”
Maya closed her eyes.
For one brief moment, everything felt right.
Then a voice interrupted them.
“Adrian.”
They turned.
Elena stood near the entrance.
Elegant.
Calm.
Beautiful.
And completely unafraid.
Her eyes moved toward Maya.
“So this is her.”
Maya stepped away from Adrian.
Elena smiled.
“I’ve heard so much about you.”
Maya didn’t respond.
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Elena, what are you doing here?”
“I came to talk.”
“You could have called.”
“I did.”
“I didn’t answer.”
“I noticed.”
She looked at Maya.
“I didn’t mean to interrupt.”
“You already did,” Adrian said.
Elena smiled.
“You haven’t changed.”
“Neither have you.”
Her smile disappeared.
“Maybe that’s why you still owe me.”
Maya looked between them.
“Owe you what?”
Elena looked at Adrian.
“Tell her.”
“Not here.”
“Why not?”
“Because this doesn’t concern her.”
Elena laughed quietly.
“Everything concerning you concerns her now.”
Maya felt a chill.
“What is she talking about?”
Adrian said nothing.
Elena reached into her purse.
She pulled out a document.
She placed it on the table.
“Your father’s company was protected by an agreement.”
Maya looked at Adrian.
“What agreement?”
Elena answered.
“If Adrian married me, my family would forgive the remaining debt.”
Maya’s face went pale.
The world seemed to go silent.
Adrian immediately shook his head.
“That agreement is dead.”
“Is it?”
“Yes.”
“You’re willing to lose everything for her?”
Adrian looked at Maya.
“Yes.”
Elena’s eyes hardened.
“Then you really haven’t learned anything.”
She turned toward Maya.
“Ask him what happened the last time he chose you.”
Maya’s heart stopped.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Leave.”
Elena smiled.
“You can’t hide the truth forever.”
She walked away.
Maya looked at Adrian.
“What did she mean?”
Adrian said nothing.
“What happened the last time you chose me?”
“Maya…”
“Tell me.”
He closed his eyes.
“My family lost almost everything.”
She stared at him.
“What?”
“I didn’t leave because my father died.”
“You said he died.”
“He did.”
“Then what?”
Adrian’s voice broke.
“Before he died, he found out I was planning to marry you.”
Maya couldn’t breathe.
“He was against it.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed your family was beneath ours.”
Maya stepped back.
Adrian continued.
“He threatened to cut me out of the company.”
“And you chose the company.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I chose you.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Then why did you leave?”
“Because after my father died, I discovered he had transferred his debts to me.”
Maya covered her mouth.
“You sacrificed everything.”
“I thought I had.”
“Adrian…”
He looked at her.
“I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.”
His voice trembled.
“I left because I was afraid that if I stayed, I would destroy the life you deserved.”
Maya cried.
“You should have let me decide.”
“I know.”
She walked toward him.
“You should have told me.”
“I know.”
She touched his face.
“And now?”
Adrian covered her hand with his.
“Now I’m done deciding for you.”
Maya stared into his eyes.
For the first time, she understood.
He hadn’t stopped loving her.
He had been running from the belief that his love would ruin her.
And somehow, that made everything hurt more.
She whispered,
“I don’t want a perfect life.”
Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.
“I just wanted you.”
He pulled her into his arms.
This time, she held him tightly.
“I love you,” she whispered.
He closed his eyes.
“I love you too.”
For three years, those words had lived inside them.
Now they were finally spoken again.
But neither knew that Elena was standing outside the café.
Watching.
Waiting.
And holding one final secret.
A secret that could destroy everything they had just begun to rebuild.
She looked at the photograph in her hand.
It was old.
It showed Adrian and Maya together.
But there was someone else standing behind them.
Someone Maya had never seen before.
Elena smiled.
“Let’s see how much your love can survive.”
To be continued…
