The Day We Chose Each Other

Chapter 6

The Day We Chose Each Other

THE DAY YOU STOPPED WAITING · August 12, 2026

The photograph stayed in Maya’s mind all night.

She had seen it only for a few seconds, but that was enough.

Adrian and her.

Standing beside the river.

Smiling.

Happy.

And behind them, almost hidden by the crowd, was a man Maya didn’t recognize.

She couldn’t understand why Elena had shown it to her.

Or why Adrian had never mentioned him.

The next morning, Maya called Adrian.

“Where are you?”

“At the office.”

“I need to see you.”

There was a pause.

“I’ll come to you.”

“No.”

She took a breath.

“I want to come there.”

Twenty minutes later, Maya walked into Adrian’s office.

He looked worried.

“What happened?”

She placed the photograph on his desk.

Adrian’s face changed immediately.

“Where did you get this?”

“Elena.”

He picked it up.

His hands became still.

“Who is he?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

“Adrian.”

He finally looked at her.

“His name is Daniel.”

“Who is Daniel?”

“My father’s former accountant.”

Maya frowned.

“What does he have to do with us?”

“Everything.”

He sat down.

Maya remained standing.

“Three years ago, when my father died, Daniel discovered something.”

“What?”

“My father had been moving money from the company into secret accounts.”

Maya’s eyes widened.

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

“Then what happened?”

“Daniel disappeared.”

“Disappeared?”

“Yes.”

“And this photograph?”

“It was taken the week before he disappeared.”

Maya stared at him.

“Why did Elena have it?”

“I don’t know.”

Adrian’s phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

No one spoke.

Then a man’s voice came through.

“You should never have brought her back into your life.”

Adrian’s face went pale.

“Who is this?”

The call ended.

Maya looked at him.

“What happened?”

Adrian stood.

“We need to leave.”

“Why?”

“Now.”

They rushed outside.

For the first time since Adrian had returned, Maya saw genuine fear in his eyes.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for her.

They drove to his apartment.

He locked the door behind them.

Maya turned toward him.

“Tell me everything.”

“I will.”

“No more secrets.”

He nodded.

“No more secrets.”

Adrian sat beside her.

“My father wasn’t the only person involved in the company’s problems.”

“Who else?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

“Because someone has been watching me since I came back.”

Maya’s heart began beating faster.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t want to frighten you.”

She shook her head.

“You still don’t understand.”

“What?”

“I don’t need you to protect me from the truth.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I need you to trust me with it.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I’ve spent years believing that protecting you meant keeping you away from my problems.”

“And now?”

“Now I understand that loving someone doesn’t mean building a wall around them.”

Maya reached for his hand.

“It means standing beside them.”

He squeezed her fingers.

“I love you.”

She smiled through her tears.

“I know.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I need to say it properly.”

He moved closer.

“I loved you when I was twenty-six and stupid enough to think leaving would save you.”

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“I loved you when I was alone in another city and every street reminded me of you.”

He continued.

“I loved you when I told myself you had moved on.”

His voice broke.

“And I loved you when I finally realized that losing you was the one thing I could never survive.”

Maya cried openly now.

“I loved you too.”

Adrian touched her face.

“I don’t want another three years.”

“Neither do I.”

“I don’t want another day.”

She smiled.

“Then don’t waste one.”

He pulled her into his arms.

She held him tightly.

For the first time, there was no fear between them.

No waiting.

No unanswered questions.

Just love.

Real love.

The kind that had survived distance.

Silence.

Anger.

Regret.

And three years of loneliness.

A few days later, Adrian discovered the truth about the photograph.

Daniel had not disappeared.

He had been hiding.

And he had kept evidence proving Adrian’s father had been manipulated by a business partner.

Elena’s family had been involved.

The debts Adrian believed belonged to him were not actually his.

The company was finally cleared.

But Adrian didn’t care about the money anymore.

He cared about one thing.

Maya.

He took her to the river one evening.

The same river where everything had begun.

The sun was setting.

Maya stood beside him.

“Why do I feel like you’ve brought me here for something important?”

Adrian smiled.

“Because I have.”

He reached into his pocket.

Maya’s heart skipped.

“Don’t tell me you’re proposing.”

He laughed.

“No.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

“Not yet.”

She looked at him.

“Not yet?”

Adrian took her hands.

“I spent three years making promises I couldn’t keep.”

He looked into her eyes.

“So I don’t want to promise you forever tonight.”

Maya smiled.

“What do you want to promise?”

“I promise tomorrow.”

She laughed softly.

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“That’s not very romantic.”

“I think it is.”

He squeezed her hands.

“I promise to wake up tomorrow and choose you.”

Her smile faded.

“And the day after?”

“I’ll choose you again.”

“And the day after that?”

“Again.”

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“You’re making me cry.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“These are the good tears.”

He smiled.

Then he pulled something from his pocket.

A small ring.

Maya stared at it.

“Adrian…”

“This isn’t a proposal.”

She laughed through her tears.

“Then what is it?”

“A reminder.”

“Of what?”

He took her hand.

“That you don’t belong to me.”

He gently placed the ring on her finger.

“You choose me.”

Maya looked at the ring.

Then at him.

“You know what I learned?”

“What?”

“Waiting for you taught me how deeply I could love someone.”

She took his hand.

“But losing you taught me how deeply I needed to love myself.”

Adrian nodded.

“And that’s why I don’t want the old version of us.”

“Neither do I.”

“I want something better.”

“So do I.”

Maya stepped closer.

“Adrian?”

“Yes?”

“I stopped waiting for you a long time ago.”

His eyes became sad.

“I know.”

She smiled.

“But that’s not the ending.”

He looked at her.

“What is?”

“I stopped waiting…”

She took his hand.

“…and started choosing.”

Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.

“I choose you.”

He pulled her into his arms.

And this time, when Maya rested her head against his chest, she didn’t feel like the girl who had spent three years waiting for someone to return.

She felt like herself.

Whole.

Loved.

Free.

The river moved quietly beside them.

The same place where they had once promised to come back to each other.

Only now, they understood.

Love wasn’t a promise that someone would never leave.

Love was the courage to stay.

The courage to speak.

The courage to forgive.

And most importantly—

the courage to choose each other again.

Every morning.

Every difficult day.

Every ordinary moment.

Years later, Maya would still remember the night Adrian returned.

But she would remember something else even more clearly.

The day she stopped waiting for him…

was the day she finally found the courage to choose him.

And he chose her too.

Not because they had forgotten the past.

But because they had survived it.

Together.

The End.
