The Curse of Black Hollow

Chapter 5

The Curse of Black Hollow

The Whispering Well · August 3, 2026

The little girl stood in the doorway.

Her yellow raincoat was covered in drops of water.

But there was no rain.

No storm.

No reason for her to be wet.

Lena couldn’t move.

The girl smiled gently.

“Don’t be afraid.”

Her voice was soft.

Almost human.

Almost.

Lena slowly stepped backward.

“Who are you?”

The girl’s expression became sad.

“My name is Emily.”

“The real Emily.”

Lena swallowed.

“If you’re real…”

“Why are you trapped inside the well?”

Emily looked toward the dark hallway.

“Because something else is wearing my face.”

The lights suddenly flickered.

The little girl’s eyes became frightened.

“He’s coming.”

“Who?”

Emily looked directly at Lena.

“The first whisper.”

A cold wind rushed through the room.

The bedroom door slammed shut.

The mirror cracked again.

This time, words appeared on the glass.

SHE BELONGS TO ME

Lena covered her mouth.

Emily stepped closer.

“Listen carefully.”

“You don’t have much time.”

“What is happening to me?”

Emily looked at the black mark on Lena’s arm.

“The well has chosen you.”

“But you can break the curse.”

“How?”

Emily pointed toward the forest.

“Find the first stone.”

“The one buried beneath the roots.”

“It holds the beginning.”

“And the ending.”

Before Lena could ask another question…

Emily disappeared.

The room became silent.

Only the cracked mirror remained.

The next morning…

Lena told everything to Samuel, Adrian, and Father Thomas.

No one spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Father Thomas whispered,

“The First Stone.”

“I thought it was destroyed.”

Samuel looked at him.

“You knew about it?”

The priest lowered his head.

“My grandfather was one of the people who built the well.”

Lena stared at him.

“You built it?”

“No.”

“We tried to contain what was already there.”

Father Thomas opened an ancient book.

Its pages were yellow and damaged.

“The legend is older than Black Hollow.”

“It says a creature lived beneath the earth.”

“Not a ghost.”

“Not a demon.”

“Something older.”

“It feeds on memories.”

“It feeds on pain.”

“It grows stronger when people lose someone they love.”

Lena looked at Adrian.

“The well used your daughter.”

Adrian looked down.

“Yes.”

“And it will use anyone.”

Samuel placed a map on the table.

“This shows where the First Stone was hidden.”

Lena studied it.

The location was deep inside the forest.

Near the original well.

“The old well?”

Father Thomas nodded.

“The one before this one.”

Lena frowned.

“There are two wells?”

Samuel answered quietly.

“The village has many secrets.”

“Most of them are buried.”

That afternoon…

Lena, Adrian, and Samuel entered the forest.

The trees seemed different now.

As if they knew they were coming.

The deeper they walked…

The colder it became.

Birds stopped singing.

The sunlight disappeared.

After an hour, they reached an ancient area covered with thick roots.

Samuel pointed.

“There.”

Beneath a massive tree stood a circle of black stones.

In the center was a small stone covered in strange symbols.

Lena stepped closer.

The moment she touched it…

She saw something.

A vision.

A village hundreds of years ago.

People standing around a well.

A young girl crying.

A man whispering words she couldn’t understand.

Then…

Darkness rising from the water.

Lena pulled her hand away.

“What did you see?”

She looked terrified.

“The first sacrifice.”

Suddenly…

A voice echoed through the trees.

“Lena…”

Everyone froze.

The voice came from everywhere.

From the ground.

From the trees.

From inside their own minds.

The well had found them.

Adrian looked around.

“It’s here.”

The shadows between the trees started moving.

A figure appeared.

A man.

Wearing old black clothes.

His face was hidden.

But Lena recognized the voice.

The voice from the well.

“You came looking for answers.”

“Now you will learn the truth.”

Samuel raised the First Stone.

The figure laughed.

“You still believe a rock can stop me?”

The forest shook.

Branches twisted.

The ground cracked.

The figure stepped closer.

“I was here before your village.”

“I will be here after it is gone.”

Lena felt the mark on her arm burning again.

She fell to her knees.

The creature looked at her.

“Your pain brought you here.”

“Your loneliness opened the door.”

Lena looked up.

“What do you want from me?”

The creature smiled.

“Your memories.”

The air became freezing.

“You think losing people hurts?”

“I will show you what it feels like to lose yourself.”

Suddenly…

Lena saw her past.

Her mother dying.

Her empty house.

Every lonely night.

Every regret.

Every moment she wished she had done something differently.

She screamed.

“No!”

Adrian grabbed her hand.

“Look at me!”

“Don’t listen!”

The creature whispered.

“Everyone leaves you eventually.”

“Everyone.”

Lena closed her eyes.

She remembered why she became an investigator.

Why she searched for truth.

Why she refused to give up.

She opened her eyes.

“No.”

The creature stopped.

“I am not my pain.”

“I am not my memories.”

“I choose who I am.”

The First Stone in Samuel’s hand began glowing.

The creature stepped backward.

For the first time…

It looked afraid.

A crack appeared across the ancient stone.

The creature screamed.

“No!”

The forest exploded with wind.

The shadow disappeared.

But before it vanished…

It whispered one final sentence.

“The seventh night is coming.”

“And when it arrives…”

“She will choose.”

The group returned to the village with the First Stone.

But Lena knew something was wrong.

The creature had disappeared too easily.

That night…

She woke suddenly.

The room was dark.

Her window was open.

On the floor beside her bed was a wet footprint.

A child’s footprint.

She followed it slowly.

Outside her door…

Someone had written on the wall.

Not in blood.

In water.

I WAS NEVER TRAPPED IN THE WELL

Lena stepped backward.

Another sentence appeared.

THE WELL WAS TRAPPED WITH ME

Her breathing stopped.

Because she finally understood.

The creature wasn’t hiding inside the well.

The well was keeping it imprisoned.

And if she broke the curse…

She might release it forever.
