The Last Soul
The Whispering Well · August 3, 2026
The final night arrived.
3:13 AM.
The time Black Hollow feared for hundreds of years.
The entire village stood outside their homes, holding candles in their shaking hands.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
Everyone knew what was coming.
The Choosing.
But this time…
Something was different.
This time…
They had hope.
Lena stood beside the old well with Adrian, Samuel, and Father Thomas.
The First Stone rested in her hands.
The ancient symbols carved into it were glowing faintly.
The air around them felt alive.
Like the forest itself was watching.
Adrian looked at Lena.
“You don’t have to do this.”
Lena looked at the black water.
“If I don’t…”
“It will choose someone else.”
Samuel nodded sadly.
“For centuries, people sacrificed themselves because they were afraid.”
“Maybe it’s time someone stopped being afraid.”
The clock tower in the village struck.
One.
Two.
Three.
Thirteen.
The final bell echoed.
The water inside the well began moving.
Slowly.
Dark waves formed on the surface.
Then…
The whisper came.
“Lena…”
Her name.
The same voice that had followed her since the first night.
The voice of the thing beneath the well.
“Come closer.”
Lena stepped forward.
Adrian grabbed her arm.
“Don’t listen.”
She looked at him.
“I have to.”
The well laughed.
A deep, ancient laugh.
“You think you can defeat me?”
“I have lived longer than your bloodline.”
“I have watched generations disappear.”
“I know every fear inside every human heart.”
The water rose.
A dark figure slowly appeared above the well.
It wasn’t a person.
It wasn’t a shadow.
It changed every second.
Sometimes it looked like a man.
Sometimes a woman.
Sometimes a child.
It had no true face.
Because it was made from stolen memories.
“I gave this village everything.”
“I gave them a way to bring back their loved ones.”
Lena stared at it.
“You lied.”
The creature smiled.
“Did I?”
“I returned their voices.”
“I returned their faces.”
“I returned their memories.”
“They simply refused to accept what they had lost.”
Emily appeared beside the well.
The real Emily.
Her small face was filled with sadness.
“Lena…”
“You have to destroy the stone.”
Everyone looked shocked.
Adrian stepped forward.
“What?”
Emily looked at her father.
“I’m sorry, Daddy.”
“The stone doesn’t trap the creature.”
“It traps me.”
Adrian froze.
“What are you saying?”
Emily smiled sadly.
“The well was never keeping the monster inside.”
“It was keeping my soul here.”
“The creature used me as its doorway.”
Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.
“No…”
“I searched for you for twelve years.”
“I know.”
“I heard you every night.”
“I know.”
Emily touched his hand.
“But you have to let me go.”
The creature screamed.
“No!”
The forest shook violently.
“You belong to me!”
Emily turned toward the darkness.
“No.”
“I never did.”
Lena understood.
The well wasn’t asking for another victim.
It was asking for someone brave enough to end the cycle.
She lifted the First Stone.
The creature rushed toward her.
Every voice it had stolen screamed at once.
“Lena!”
“Stop!”
“You’re making a mistake!”
It showed her visions.
Her mother alive.
Her lost memories returned.
A perfect life.
All she had to do…
Was surrender.
But Lena smiled.
“I know you’re lying.”
The creature stopped.
“How?”
“Because real love doesn’t ask people to destroy themselves.”
She dropped the stone into the well.
For a moment…
Nothing happened.
Then…
The entire forest went silent.
The water turned clear.
The darkness began breaking apart.
The creature screamed.
A sound that shook the earth.
“No!”
“I am eternal!”
Lena watched as the shadow disappeared.
“You were never eternal.”
“You were only remembered.”
The well cracked.
Light poured from inside.
Hundreds of whispers filled the air.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Free.
Emily smiled at her father.
“I can go now.”
Adrian cried.
“I wasn’t ready.”
“No one is.”
She hugged him.
“Thank you for never forgetting me.”
Then…
She turned into a soft golden light.
And disappeared.
The well became empty.
Completely silent.
Morning arrived in Black Hollow.
For the first time in hundreds of years…
The village heard birds singing.
Children played outside.
People opened their windows without fear.
The black symbols above the doors slowly faded away.
The curse was gone.
Weeks later…
Lena returned to the city.
Her podcast episode about Black Hollow became her biggest story ever.
But she didn’t reveal everything.
Some mysteries were too strange for the world to understand.
Some truths were better left quiet.
Months passed.
One evening, Lena visited Black Hollow again.
The old well had been covered with flowers.
Samuel was sitting nearby.
“You came back.”
Lena smiled.
“I wanted to see if it was really over.”
Samuel looked at the peaceful village.
“It is.”
Then he handed her a small wooden box.
“What is this?”
“Something found after the well disappeared.”
Lena opened it.
Inside was an old piece of paper.
Only one sentence was written on it.
Every curse ends. But every story leaves a whisper behind.
Lena smiled.
She closed the box.
And for the first time in a long time…
She heard silence.
Not the terrifying silence of Black Hollow.
A peaceful one.
A beautiful one.
But as she walked away from the village…
The wind moved through the trees.
And somewhere deep in the forest…
A faint whisper echoed.
“Lena…”
She stopped.
Slowly turned around.
The forest was empty.
No footsteps.
No shadow.
Nothing.
Then she smiled.
Because she knew the truth.
Some voices don’t haunt you.
Some voices simply remind you…
That you survived.
