The City at the Edge of Nowhere

Chapter 1

The City at the Edge of Nowhere

THE CITY THAT MOVED BETWEEN STARS · August 12, 2026

Nobody knew who had built the city.

Nobody knew when it had appeared.

And most importantly, nobody knew why it moved.

For nearly eighty years, the city had traveled through space.

It had no engines.

No visible fuel system.

No known propulsion technology.

Every seventeen days, it simply disappeared from one location and appeared somewhere else.

Sometimes it appeared near a dead star.

Sometimes beside a planet.

Sometimes in the middle of empty space where there should have been nothing at all.

The people who lived inside it had stopped asking questions.

They called it **Veyra**.

Veyra was not a spaceship.

It was a world.

A gigantic city enclosed inside a transparent sphere nearly two hundred kilometers wide.

Millions of people lived beneath its artificial sky.

There were oceans.

Mountains.

Forests.

Buildings taller than anything built on Earth.

Artificial suns moved across the sky.

At night, the city projected constellations above its citizens.

Nobody knew what the real universe looked like anymore.

For most people, Veyra was home.

For nineteen-year-old **Mara Ellison**, it was a prison.

She stood on the highest observation platform of District Seven, staring at the artificial stars.

She hated them.

They were too perfect.

Real stars flickered.

Real stars changed.

These never did.

Mara leaned against the glass barrier.

“You’ll fall.”

She didn’t turn around.

“That’s the plan.”

A young man laughed behind her.

“Again?”

Mara finally looked back.

**Jonas Vale** was standing there with his hands inside his jacket pockets.

He was twenty-one, a mechanic, a terrible liar, and Mara’s only real friend.

“You’ve been saying that for three years,” he said.

“And one day I’ll mean it.”

Jonas walked beside her.

“Why are you here?”

“Because the sky is lying.”

He looked upward.

“What?”

“Those stars.”

“They’re projections.”

“I know.”

“Then why does that bother you?”

Mara pointed at one.

“That star hasn’t moved in eighty years.”

Jonas shrugged.

“Maybe it’s a very stable star.”

“It’s not a star.”

He looked at her.

“What is it?”

“I don’t know.”

She took a small device from her pocket.

The screen displayed a series of numbers.

Jonas’s smile disappeared.

“Where did you get that?”

“Maintenance level.”

“You went there again?”

“Yes.”

“Mara…”

“Don’t.”

“You’re going to get yourself arrested.”

“Maybe.”

“What did you find?”

Mara looked around.

Nobody was nearby.

She lowered her voice.

“Something beneath the city.”

Jonas frowned.

“What kind of something?”

“A door.”

“That’s not unusual.”

“It was made of metal.”

“Still not unusual.”

“It had no handle.”

“Okay.”

“It had my name on it.”

Jonas stopped walking.

“What?”

Mara showed him the screen.

A symbol appeared.

Then her name.

**MARA ELLISON — AUTHORIZED.**

Jonas stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“I know.”

“Have you told anyone?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever built that door knows who you are.”

Mara looked toward the artificial stars.

“That’s what scares me.”

Suddenly, the city lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire artificial sky disappeared.

For the first time in eighty years, the people of Veyra saw the real universe.

Millions of stars filled the sky.

The city became silent.

People stopped walking.

Children looked upward.

Older citizens began crying.

Mara stared.

The real stars were beautiful.

But one thing was wrong.

There were too many.

Thousands of stars appeared where Veyra’s artificial sky had shown only a few hundred.

Then a massive object moved across the darkness.

It was not a planet.

Not a ship.

It was enormous.

Jonas whispered:

“What is that?”

Mara didn’t answer.

The object moved slowly behind the transparent shell.

It looked like a city.

Another city.

But it was black.

Dead.

And it was following Veyra.

Every screen in the city activated.

A message appeared.

**DO NOT LOOK OUTSIDE.**

The message vanished.

Then another appeared.

**THE CITY HAS BEEN FOUND.**

Mara’s heart began beating faster.

Jonas looked at her.

“Found by who?”

The city shook.

People screamed.

Buildings swayed.

The artificial gravity failed for three seconds.

Mara’s feet left the ground.

Jonas grabbed her.

Then gravity returned.

A deep sound echoed through Veyra.

Not an alarm.

A voice.

**MARA ELLISON.**

She froze.

Jonas looked at her.

“How does it know your name?”

The voice spoke again.

**MARA ELLISON. COME TO THE CENTRAL TOWER.**

Mara stared at the sky.

“I didn’t tell it my name.”

Jonas swallowed.

“Maybe you should go.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I think it wants me there.”

“Then that’s exactly why you should go.”

Mara looked at him.

“You’re coming with me.”

Jonas sighed.

“I knew you’d say that.”

They ran toward the central tower.

Veyra was in chaos.

Emergency doors were closing.

Security drones filled the streets.

People crowded into shelters.

Nobody understood what was happening.

Mara and Jonas reached the tower.

The doors opened before they touched them.

Inside was darkness.

A circular elevator waited.

There were no buttons.

Mara stepped inside.

Jonas followed.

The doors closed.

The elevator began moving.

Down.

Not up.

Jonas looked at Mara.

“How far does this go?”

“I don’t know.”

The elevator continued descending.

One hundred meters.

Five hundred.

One thousand.

The city was supposed to have no underground levels beyond the maintenance network.

But the elevator kept going.

Three kilometers.

Five.

Ten.

The walls changed from metal to something black and glass-like.

Then the elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

Mara stepped into a massive underground chamber.

There was a machine in the center.

It was enormous.

Circular.

Covered with glowing symbols.

Jonas stared.

“What is this?”

Mara walked closer.

The machine suddenly activated.

A blue light appeared.

Then a human figure formed inside it.

A woman.

She looked about thirty years old.

She was wearing a silver uniform.

Mara stared at her.

The woman looked directly at her.

“Mara.”

Mara’s voice trembled.

“Who are you?”

The woman smiled.

“My name is **Seren**.”

“Are you human?”

Seren hesitated.

“Once.”

Jonas stepped forward.

“What does that mean?”

Seren ignored him.

Her eyes remained fixed on Mara.

“You’re late.”

Mara frowned.

“Late for what?”

“For waking up.”

Mara’s heart stopped.

“What?”

Seren pointed toward the enormous machine.

“Veyra was never a city.”

Mara looked around.

“What is it?”

“A vessel.”

“For what?”

Seren looked upward.

“For the last human civilization.”

Jonas shook his head.

“That makes no sense.”

Seren smiled sadly.

“You’re right.”

She touched the machine.

The chamber filled with images.

Thousands of planets appeared.

Some were green.

Some were blue.

Some were completely destroyed.

Then one image appeared larger than the others.

A planet.

Earth.

But it was not the Earth Mara knew.

It was covered in darkness.

No cities.

No lights.

No satellites.

Nothing.

Jonas whispered:

“Earth?”

Seren nodded.

“The real Earth.”

Mara stared at the image.

“What happened?”

“Humanity happened.”

The image changed.

Wars.

Spacecraft.

Explosions.

Civilizations disappearing.

Then Veyra appeared.

A gigantic city being constructed.

Mara watched millions of humans entering it.

Then something unexpected happened.

The people inside Veyra began losing their memories.

One generation.

Then another.

Then another.

Until nobody remembered where they came from.

Mara looked at Seren.

“Why?”

Seren’s expression became serious.

“Because memory was dangerous.”

“Why?”

“Because Veyra was running from something.”

A sound echoed through the chamber.

The same deep voice from the city.

**WE HAVE ARRIVED.**

Seren looked frightened.

For the first time, Mara saw fear in her eyes.

“Who?”

Seren looked upward.

“The ones who built Veyra.”

Jonas stared.

“You said humans built it.”

“They did.”

“Then who are you afraid of?”

Seren looked at Mara.

“The humans who never forgot.”

The chamber shook violently.

A crack appeared across the ceiling.

Something enormous was approaching Veyra.

Mara looked at the machine.

“Can we stop it?”

Seren shook her head.

“No.”

“Then what can we do?”

Seren stepped toward her.

“You can move the city.”

Mara frowned.

“I don’t know how.”

Seren touched Mara’s forehead.

A bright blue symbol appeared.

Suddenly, thousands of images flooded Mara’s mind.

Stars.

Planets.

Galaxies.

Paths between them.

She could see Veyra moving through space.

She could feel the city.

Like it was alive.

Like it was part of her.

Mara gasped.

Seren whispered:

“You are not a passenger, Mara.”

The machine began glowing.

“You are the navigator.”

Mara looked at the enormous city surrounding them.

Then the voice returned.

This time it sounded closer.

**WE HAVE FOUND YOU.**

The entire city began moving.

But it wasn’t traveling through space.

It was moving through the stars themselves.

Mara suddenly understood.

Veyra did not have an engine.

It had a memory.

And Mara was the only person left who could remember where it needed to go.

Seren looked at her.

“Choose.”

“Choose what?”

“Where we go next.”

Mara looked at the thousands of stars inside her mind.

Then one distant point began glowing.

A place she had never seen.

A planet hidden beyond the known galaxy.

A planet surrounded by rings of black light.

A planet marked with a single symbol.

**HOME.**

Mara whispered:

“Take us there.”

Seren smiled.

The machine activated.

Veyra disappeared.

For the first time in eighty years, the wandering city had chosen its destination.

And somewhere behind it, the black city followed.
