The Clock Beneath The Dead Moon
THE LAST PLANETARY CLOCK · August 5, 2026
The universe was full of abandoned things.
Forgotten planets.
Destroyed civilizations.
Lost civilizations that once believed they would live forever.
But nothing was more forgotten than Nerion-12.
A dead moon orbiting a dying star at the edge of the Helios Sector.
No forests.
No oceans.
No cities.
Only endless grey deserts and ancient ruins buried beneath layers of dust.
Most humans had left Nerion-12 centuries ago.
They called it a useless world.
A place where nothing could grow.
A place where nothing could survive.
But Arin Solace believed every abandoned place had a secret.
And secrets were the only things that still made life interesting.
Arin tightened the final bolt on the damaged engine in front of him.
The small mining ship shook violently as the old machine came back to life.
“Please work,” he whispered.
The engine made a strange noise.
A horrible, painful noise.
Then it stopped.
Arin closed his eyes.
“You have got to be kidding me.”
A small floating robot beside him scanned the engine.
The robot was round, silver, and had one glowing blue eye.
Its name was Kiro.
“Engine failure confirmed,” Kiro announced.
Arin looked at the robot.
“You could have said something positive.”
“I searched my database for positive information.”
“And?”
“None found.”
Arin sighed.
“You are the worst assistant ever created.”
“Incorrect. I am the 14th worst assistant ever created.”
Arin stared.
“That is somehow worse.”
Kiro rotated in the air.
“Thank you.”
Arin ignored him and looked outside the ship.
The surface of Nerion-12 stretched endlessly beneath him.
For ten years, he had lived here.
Repairing old machines.
Collecting forgotten technology.
Searching for something nobody believed existed.
The truth about the disappearance of Earth.
Two hundred years ago, Earth vanished.
Not destroyed.
Not attacked.
Vanished.
One day, every communication signal from Earth stopped.
Every satellite went silent.
Every spaceship traveling toward it disappeared.
The official explanation was simple:
A catastrophic timeline failure.
The government claimed Earth had been removed from normal time.
A scientific accident.
A mistake.
But Arin never believed that explanation.
Because his father was one of the scientists who worked on the original Chrono Engine project.
Before he disappeared, his father left Arin one message.
Only one sentence.
“Time does not break by accident.”
Arin had spent his entire life trying to understand what those words meant.
That night, something unusual happened.
Kiro detected a strange signal beneath the surface.
“Unknown energy source detected.”
Arin looked up from his work.
“Where?”
“Approximately 700 meters below your current location.”
Arin frowned.
“That area was scanned before.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“No structures were detected.”
Arin stood.
“Then why are you detecting something now?”
Kiro processed the information.
“Unknown.”
Arin smiled.
“Finally. A mystery.”
Kiro’s blue eye blinked.
“Your excitement level has increased by 43%.”
“Because mysteries are interesting.”
“Your survival rate decreases when mysteries appear.”
“Also true.”
Arin grabbed his exploration equipment.
“Let’s go.”
The underground tunnels of Nerion-12 were older than human settlements.
The walls were covered with strange symbols.
Not human symbols.
At least, not any symbols Arin recognized.
The deeper he went, the colder it became.
His helmet display showed increasing energy levels.
“Whatever is down there,” Kiro said, “it is not natural.”
Arin touched one of the symbols.
The moment his hand connected with the wall…
Everything changed.
For one second, he saw another world.
A city floating among stars.
Millions of people watching a giant machine.
A clock.
Not a normal clock.
A machine larger than planets.
Then the vision disappeared.
Arin stepped back.
“What was that?”
Kiro scanned him.
“Unknown neurological event.”
“I saw something.”
“Your brain also creates dreams.”
“I was awake.”
“Your brain is still capable of making poor decisions while awake.”
Arin looked at the robot.
“Can you be serious for five seconds?”
“I can try.”
Kiro paused.
“Five seconds completed.”
Arin continued walking.
After an hour, they reached a massive underground chamber.
Arin stopped.
Because in the center of the chamber was something impossible.
A machine.
A giant metallic clock.
Its surface was covered with thousands of moving symbols.
But the strange thing was…
The clock had no hands.
Instead, inside the center was a small galaxy.
Stars moved inside it.
Time itself was trapped within the machine.
Arin whispered:
“What is this?”
Kiro scanned it.
His voice changed.
“Unknown technology.”
“That is not helpful.”
“Correction. Extremely unknown technology.”
Arin walked closer.
A small panel appeared on the machine.
Then words formed.
Words that made his heart stop.
WELCOME BACK, ARIN SOLACE.
He froze.
“No…”
Kiro moved closer.
“Your name has been identified.”
“That’s impossible.”
The machine continued.
CHRONO ENGINE ACCESS GRANTED.
Arin stepped away.
The Chrono Engine.
The technology that caused Earth’s disappearance.
The technology his father worked on.
The technology that was supposed to be destroyed.
“How does this know me?”
A new message appeared.
BECAUSE YOU CREATED ME.
Arin’s blood went cold.
“I didn’t create anything.”
The machine responded.
NOT IN THIS TIMELINE.
Suddenly, the entire chamber shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
The clock activated.
The galaxy inside it began spinning faster.
Kiro’s alarm system activated.
“Warning.”
“What?”
“Multiple temporal distortions detected.”
Arin looked at the machine.
“What does that mean?”
Kiro turned toward him.
“It means time is breaking.”
A bright light exploded from the Chrono Engine.
Arin covered his eyes.
When he opened them…
Someone was standing inside the chamber.
A woman.
She wore a futuristic exploration suit covered with damage marks.
Her dark hair moved slightly in the strange energy surrounding them.
She looked at Arin like she had been searching for him for years.
“Finally,” she whispered.
Arin raised his weapon.
“Who are you?”
The woman looked at him sadly.
“My name is Mira Kael.”
“How did you get here?”
She looked at the Chrono Engine.
“I came from the future.”
Arin froze.
“That’s impossible.”
Mira smiled.
“I know.”
“Time travel is impossible.”
“No.”
She looked directly at him.
“Time travel is forbidden.”
Arin lowered his weapon slightly.
“Why?”
Mira’s expression became serious.
“Because every time someone changes the past…”
The chamber lights flickered.
“…the future gets worse.”
A silence followed.
Then Arin asked:
“Why did you come here?”
Mira looked at him.
Her next words changed everything.
“Because in my timeline, you destroy the universe.”
Arin stared.
“What?”
“You activate this machine.”
She pointed toward the Chrono Engine.
“And seven years later…”
Her voice became quiet.
“Every star goes dark.”
The clock began counting backward.
10…
9…
8…
Mira stepped closer.
“I came here to stop you.”
7…
6…
Arin looked at the machine.
Then at the woman from the future.
For his entire life, he searched for answers.
Now the answer had found him.
And it was accusing him of destroying everything.
5…
4…
The Chrono Engine opened.
A voice echoed across the chamber.
THE FIRST TIMELINE RESTORATION WILL BEGIN.
3…
2…
Arin realized one terrifying truth.
The future was not waiting for him.
The future was afraid of him.
1…
The universe changed.
To be continued…
