The Door Beneath the Lake

Chapter 4

The Door Beneath the Lake

Whispers at Blackwater Lake · July 21, 2026

The black door continued to rise from the lake.

Amelia stood on the shore.

She couldn’t move.

The water around the door was perfectly still.

Not a single wave touched it.

Not even the rain.

It was as if the entire lake had stopped breathing.

Daniel stood beside her.

“Don’t go near it.”

Amelia looked at him.

“You just told me I have until midnight.”

“I know.”

“Then why shouldn’t I go?”

“Because the door isn’t an entrance.”

“What is it?”

Daniel stared at the black surface.

“A mouth.”

Amelia’s stomach tightened.

“A mouth?”

“It doesn’t take you somewhere.”

“Then what does it do?”

“It takes something from you.”

“What?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Your name.”

Amelia frowned.

“What happens if it takes my name?”

“You forget who you are.”

She stared at the door.

“Then how do I get my family back?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Amelia turned toward him.

“Daniel.”

He looked away.

“Tell me.”

“You can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because they’re not your family anymore.”

Amelia felt cold.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your mother has been dead for fifteen years.”

“I know.”

“Your father has been dead for ten.”

“I know.”

“I died fifteen years ago.”

Amelia swallowed.

“Then what is inside that house?”

Daniel whispered:

“Memories.”

Amelia stared at him.

“Memories don’t talk.”

“These do.”

“Memories don’t walk.”

“These do.”

“Memories don’t ask to come back.”

Daniel looked toward the lake.

“These do.”

Amelia felt a strange pressure in her chest.

“What happens at midnight?”

“The door closes.”

“And?”

“Anyone trapped inside stays there forever.”

“Then we have to go.”

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“No.”

Amelia pulled away.

“My mother is in there.”

“No.”

“My father.”

“No.”

“My brother.”

“Amelia.”

“You said they were waiting.”

“They are.”

“Then I’m going.”

Daniel stepped in front of her.

“Listen to me.”

His voice was suddenly serious.

“The people inside that house are not the people you remember.”

Amelia stared.

“How do you know?”

“Because I went inside.”

“When?”

“Fifteen years ago.”

“You said you died.”

“I did.”

“Then how are you here?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

Amelia stepped closer.

“Who brought you back?”

Daniel looked toward the lake.

“The house.”

“Why?”

“Because it needed someone who remembered the way out.”

“Out of what?”

Daniel whispered:

“Death.”

The word hung between them.

Amelia stared.

Then she noticed something.

Daniel’s reflection wasn’t visible in the lake.

She looked at herself.

Her reflection was there.

Daniel’s wasn’t.

Amelia stepped backward.

“You aren’t real.”

Daniel became silent.

“Are you?”

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.”

“I’m your brother.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Daniel’s face became sad.

“You already know.”

Amelia felt tears in her eyes.

“You’re dead.”

“Yes.”

“You’ve been dead this entire time.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you come to me?”

“Because you called me.”

“I never called you.”

Daniel smiled.

“You did.”

“When?”

“Fifteen years ago.”

Amelia shook her head.

“I was ten.”

“I know.”

“What did I say?”

Daniel looked at the lake.

“You promised you’d bring me back.”

Amelia’s heart broke.

“I don’t remember.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because you made your father erase it.”

“Why would I do that?”

“Because you were afraid.”

“Of what?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Of what you had become.”

A car approached.

The headlights cut through the darkness.

Amelia turned.

Elias stepped out.

He was carrying a large black bag.

Daniel immediately moved away.

Amelia noticed.

“What’s wrong?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Elias walked toward them.

“Amelia.”

She stared at him.

“Where were you?”

“Looking for you.”

“You disappeared.”

“So did you.”

“Why?”

Elias glanced at Daniel.

“Because of him.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

Amelia looked between them.

“You know each other.”

Elias didn’t answer.

“Tell me.”

Elias sighed.

“I knew Daniel.”

“When?”

“Before he disappeared.”

“Who are you?”

“I already told you.”

“No.”

Amelia stepped closer.

“You said you were Detective Elias Ward.”

“I am.”

“You also said the real Elias died.”

“Yes.”

“Then explain.”

Elias looked at Daniel.

Daniel shook his head.

“Don’t.”

Amelia turned.

“Don’t what?”

Elias suddenly raised his weapon.

Daniel stepped backward.

“Amelia, move.”

“Why?”

Elias aimed directly at Daniel.

“Because that’s not your brother.”

Amelia froze.

Daniel stared at him.

“You’re still doing this?”

Elias’s face became angry.

“You don’t belong here.”

“Neither do you.”

“At least I’m alive.”

Daniel laughed.

“Are you sure?”

Amelia felt cold.

“What is going on?”

Elias kept his weapon raised.

“Daniel died fifteen years ago.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Elias looked at Amelia.

“You don’t understand.”

He pointed at Daniel.

“That thing is not Daniel.”

Daniel’s face became pale.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Elias fired.

The bullet hit Daniel.

Amelia screamed.

“NO!”

Daniel fell.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Amelia ran to him.

“Daniel!”

He looked at her.

His eyes were filled with pain.

“Amelia…”

She pressed her hands against the wound.

“Stay with me.”

Daniel smiled.

“I told you.”

“What?”

“You shouldn’t trust him.”

Elias walked closer.

“Get away from him.”

“You’re a monster!”

“He isn’t your brother.”

Amelia looked at Daniel.

“Tell me the truth.”

Daniel coughed.

“About what?”

“Are you real?”

Daniel stared at her.

Then he smiled.

“No.”

Amelia’s heart shattered.

The world seemed to stop.

Daniel’s body began changing.

His skin became pale.

His eyes turned black.

His face twisted.

Amelia screamed and moved backward.

The thing that looked like Daniel stood.

Elias raised his weapon again.

But the creature moved faster.

It grabbed Elias by the throat.

Elias fired.

The bullet missed.

The creature threw him into a tree.

Amelia ran.

She didn’t look back.

She ran toward the lake.

The black door was still there.

Behind her…

Something followed.

“Amelia!”

She heard Daniel’s voice.

She stopped.

“Amelia!”

She turned.

Daniel stood behind her.

But now he looked normal.

Blood covered his shirt.

His eyes were human.

“Please.”

Amelia stared.

“You’re not real.”

“I know.”

“Then what are you?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your memory.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Why are you here?”

“Because you remember me.”

“Then why did Elias shoot you?”

“Because he knows what happens if I stay.”

“What?”

Daniel looked toward the door.

“The house becomes complete.”

Amelia stared.

“Complete?”

“Yes.”

“What does that mean?”

“You’re the last piece.”

Amelia’s heart stopped.

“Of what?”

Daniel whispered:

“The family.”

The black door opened.

A terrible sound came from inside.

Amelia looked.

Darkness.

Then…

A light.

A small room.

A table.

Four chairs.

Her mother sat at one.

Her father at another.

Mara at the third.

The fourth was empty.

Amelia understood.

“The fourth chair.”

Daniel nodded.

“Is for you.”

“No.”

“You have to sit.”

“Why?”

“Because then the family will be complete.”

“What happens?”

“You stay.”

“Forever?”

Daniel nodded.

Amelia looked at the door.

Her mother stood.

“Amelia.”

Her voice was gentle.

Familiar.

The voice Amelia had missed for years.

“Mom.”

Her mother smiled.

“Come home.”

Amelia stepped forward.

Daniel grabbed her hand.

“Don’t.”

Amelia looked at him.

“She’s my mother.”

“No.”

“She is.”

“Not anymore.”

Her mother stepped closer.

“You don’t have to be afraid.”

Amelia started crying.

“I’ve missed you.”

Her mother smiled.

“We’ve missed you too.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Amelia.”

She ignored him.

Her mother opened her arms.

“Come here.”

Amelia moved forward.

One step.

Two.

Then…

She stopped.

Something was wrong.

Her mother didn’t have a reflection.

Neither did Thomas.

Neither did Mara.

Only Amelia.

She looked at Daniel.

“You said they’re memories.”

“Yes.”

“Then why do they look real?”

“Because they remember being alive.”

Amelia turned toward her mother.

“Do you remember me?”

Her mother smiled.

“Of course.”

“What was my favorite song?”

Silence.

Amelia’s mother’s smile disappeared.

“What?”

“When I was a child.”

Her mother stared.

Amelia stepped closer.

“What was my favorite song?”

The woman didn’t answer.

Amelia’s voice became stronger.

“What did I call Daniel when we were children?”

Silence.

“What was my favorite book?”

Nothing.

Amelia began crying.

“You’re not my mother.”

The woman’s face changed.

The skin became gray.

Her eyes turned black.

The mouth opened too wide.

The creature screamed.

“YOU BELONG TO US!”

Amelia ran.

The black door slammed shut.

The lake exploded.

Water rose into the sky.

Amelia fell.

Someone grabbed her.

Elias.

He pulled her away from the shore.

“Run!”

“What about Daniel?”

Elias looked toward the lake.

“He’s gone.”

“No!”

“Amelia!”

She fought him.

“He was my brother!”

“He was a memory!”

“He was real!”

Elias stopped.

Amelia looked at him.

“Wasn’t he?”

Elias said nothing.

“Tell me!”

He looked away.

Amelia suddenly understood.

“You knew.”

Elias closed his eyes.

“You knew Daniel was dead.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe he was alive.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

Elias looked at the lake.

“From the truth.”

“What truth?”

Elias turned toward her.

“Daniel didn’t die fifteen years ago.”

Amelia stared.

“What?”

“He disappeared.”

“That’s what everyone said.”

“No.”

Elias shook his head.

“His body was never found.”

“I know.”

“Because he was never in the lake.”

“Then where was he?”

Elias whispered:

“Under the house.”

Amelia froze.

“What?”

“Your father built the house over something.”

“What?”

“A tunnel.”

“To where?”

Elias looked at the lake.

“An underground city.”

Amelia stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“Not here.”

“What is this place?”

Elias looked at the black door.

“The oldest part of Blackwater.”

“What does that mean?”

“The lake isn’t natural.”

Amelia frowned.

“What?”

“Neither is the house.”

“Then who built it?”

Elias didn’t answer.

Amelia grabbed his coat.

“Tell me.”

Elias looked at her.

“The people who built the house weren’t human.”

The words echoed in her mind.

“Then what were they?”

Elias whispered:

“Something that came before us.”

Amelia felt dizzy.

“Aliens?”

“No.”

“Demons?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Elias looked toward the forest.

“People.”

Amelia stared.

“People?”

“Ancient people.”

“How ancient?”

“Older than civilization.”

Amelia shook her head.

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

A noise came from the trees.

Both turned.

A figure stood in the darkness.

Elias raised his weapon.

“Who’s there?”

The figure stepped forward.

Mara.

Amelia ran toward her.

“Mara!”

The little girl looked terrified.

“Amelia.”

“Where were you?”

“Inside.”

“Inside the house?”

Mara nodded.

“Why?”

“Because I was hiding.”

“From who?”

Mara looked at Elias.

Then at the lake.

“From them.”

“Who?”

Mara whispered:

“The people beneath the lake.”

Elias went pale.

“How did you get out?”

Mara looked at Amelia.

“She opened the door.”

Amelia frowned.

“Who?”

“You.”

“I didn’t.”

Mara shook her head.

“You did.”

“When?”

“Fifteen years ago.”

Amelia stepped backward.

“No.”

Mara grabbed her hand.

“You opened the door.”

“Why?”

“To save Daniel.”

Amelia felt tears.

“Did I?”

Mara nodded.

“But you didn’t know the price.”

“What price?”

Mara looked at Elias.

“He knows.”

Amelia turned.

“What price?”

Elias was silent.

“Tell me!”

Elias finally spoke.

“You traded your memories.”

“For Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he come back?”

“Because the house kept him.”

Amelia looked at Mara.

“Then what am I supposed to do?”

Mara whispered:

“Open the door again.”

Amelia stared.

“No.”

“If you don’t…”

Mara looked toward the lake.

“…everyone trapped inside will disappear forever.”

“Who?”

“Your family.”

Amelia shook her head.

“They’re not real.”

Mara’s eyes filled with tears.

“Maybe not.”

“Then why should I save them?”

“Because they’re still waiting.”

Amelia looked at the lake.

The black door was disappearing beneath the water.

Midnight was approaching.

She had less than an hour.

Elias stepped beside her.

“If you open the door…”

“What?”

“You may never come back.”

Amelia stared.

“And if I don’t?”

“The house will choose someone else.”

“Who?”

Elias looked at Mara.

Amelia immediately understood.

“No.”

Mara stepped backward.

“It’s okay.”

“No.”

“Amelia.”

“No!”

“You have to choose.”

“Choose what?”

Mara pointed toward the lake.

“The door needs a keeper.”

Amelia’s heart stopped.

“What does that mean?”

Mara whispered:

“Someone has to stay behind.”

Amelia looked at Elias.

“Who?”

He didn’t answer.

Then…

A voice came from the forest.

“Me.”

Everyone turned.

Daniel stood there.

But this time…

Amelia knew.

He was real.

She ran toward him.

“Daniel!”

He caught her.

For a moment…

Neither spoke.

Amelia cried.

“You’re alive.”

Daniel held her tightly.

“Yes.”

“But you were shot.”

“I know.”

“You changed.”

“I know.”

“You’re not a memory.”

Daniel smiled.

“No.”

“Then what are you?”

Daniel looked at Elias.

“Elias knows.”

Amelia turned.

Elias looked away.

Daniel said:

“Tell her.”

Elias shook his head.

“Now.”

Elias finally spoke.

“Daniel was born inside the house.”

Amelia froze.

“What?”

“He isn’t your biological brother.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Amelia stared at him.

“Is that true?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then who are you?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

Amelia’s eyes filled with tears.

“But I remember you.”

“I remember you too.”

“You were my brother.”

“I still am.”

“How?”

Daniel smiled.

“Because family isn’t always blood.”

Amelia hugged him.

Elias watched silently.

Then the ground shook.

The black door rose again.

But this time…

It was much larger.

The lake began draining into it.

A massive staircase appeared beneath the water.

Mara stared.

“She’s coming.”

Amelia turned.

“Who?”

Mara whispered:

“The first one.”

“Who is the first one?”

Mara looked at Amelia.

“The first Amelia.”

A woman stepped out of the lake.

She looked exactly like Amelia.

But older.

Scarred.

Dead.

The same woman Amelia had seen in the basement.

She walked toward them.

Everyone froze.

The woman looked at Amelia.

“Finally.”

Amelia stepped backward.

“Who are you?”

The woman smiled.

“I told you.”

“I’m you.”

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

The woman touched Amelia’s face.

“You are me.”

Amelia pushed her away.

“Why do you want me?”

The woman smiled.

“Because I have been waiting fifteen years.”

“For what?”

The woman looked at the black door.

“For my replacement.”

Amelia froze.

“No.”

The woman stepped closer.

“Someone has to stay.”

Amelia looked at Daniel.

Then Mara.

Then Elias.

The woman whispered:

“And someone has to leave.”

The clock struck midnight.

The black door opened completely.

A massive darkness emerged from beneath the lake.

The woman smiled.

“Choose.”

Amelia stared.

“Choose what?”

The woman pointed at three people.

Daniel.

Mara.

Elias.

“One of them will leave with you.”

Amelia’s heart stopped.

“Only one?”

“Yes.”

“And the others?”

The woman smiled.

“They stay.”

Amelia looked at the three people she had come to trust.

Her brother.

The mysterious girl.

The detective who had lied to her.

One was alive.

One was dead.

One was something else.

And she had to choose.

The woman leaned closer.

“You have five minutes.”

Amelia stared at them.

Then she noticed something.

The silver key was back in her hand.

But this time…

There was writing on it.

Four words.

THE FIRST CHOICE WAS YOURS.

Amelia’s eyes widened.

She suddenly remembered.

Fifteen years ago…

She had stood at this exact lake.

She had opened the door.

She had made a choice.

And she remembered what she had chosen.

Amelia looked at the woman.

“You lied.”

The woman stopped smiling.

Amelia raised the key.

“There are not three choices.”

The woman stared.

Amelia stepped toward the door.

“There are four.”

Silence.

Daniel looked at her.

“What are you doing?”

Amelia smiled.

“I’m remembering.”

The black door began shaking.

The woman screamed:

“NO!”

Amelia inserted the silver key.

The entire lake exploded with light.

The house screamed.

The forest disappeared.

And a voice came from beneath the world.

“AMELIA VANE…”

Amelia looked into the darkness.

“Yes?”

“WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE?”

Amelia closed her eyes.

Then she answered:

“I choose no one.”

The world went black.

And when Amelia opened her eyes…

She was standing somewhere else.

A city.

A modern city.

People walking.

Cars moving.

Children laughing.

She looked at her hands.

No blood.

No key.

No scars.

She turned around.

The house was gone.

The lake was gone.

Blackwater didn’t exist.

A man walked toward her.

Daniel.

Alive.

Human.

Amelia smiled.

“Daniel.”

He hugged her.

“Are you okay?”

She began crying.

“Where are we?”

“Home.”

She looked around.

“What year is it?”

Daniel frowned.

“2026.”

Amelia froze.

“How old am I?”

“Twenty-five.”

Her heart stopped.

She looked at him.

“What happened?”

Daniel smiled.

“Nothing.”

Amelia stared.

“Nothing?”

“You’re acting strange.”

“Where is Mom?”

Daniel frowned.

“At home.”

“Dad?”

“Working.”

Amelia couldn’t breathe.

“They’re alive?”

“Of course.”

Amelia looked around.

Everything was normal.

Everything was perfect.

Too perfect.

Daniel touched her shoulder.

“What’s wrong?”

Amelia looked at him.

“Do you remember Blackwater Lake?”

Daniel became silent.

His smile disappeared.

“What did you say?”

“The lake.”

Daniel stared.

Then he whispered:

“Don’t say that name.”

Amelia’s heart stopped.

“Why?”

Daniel looked terrified.

“Because that’s where you disappeared.”

Amelia froze.

“What?”

Daniel stepped backward.

“You were missing for fifteen years.”

“No.”

“Amelia…”

“I was ten.”

“Yes.”

“And now I’m twenty-five.”

“Yes.”

“Then what happened to me?”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“We thought you were dead.”

Amelia stared.

“But I’m here.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed behind her.

Amelia turned.

A mirror stood against the wall.

She looked at her reflection.

She was ten years old.

Not twenty-five.

A little girl.

Wet.

Covered in blood.

Holding a silver key.

Amelia screamed.

Daniel grabbed her.

“Don’t look!”

The mirror cracked.

A voice whispered from inside.

“Wrong choice.”

Amelia looked at Daniel.

“What?”

His face changed.

The skin became gray.

His eyes became black.

He smiled.

“You were supposed to choose me.”

Amelia stepped backward.

“You’re not Daniel.”

The creature laughed.

“No.”

“Who are you?”

It leaned closer.

“The one you left behind.”

The room disappeared.

Amelia fell into darkness.

And somewhere…

A clock began ticking again.

Five minutes.

Four.

Three.

Two.

One.

Then a voice whispered:

“Choose again.”
