The Echo

Chapter 3

The Echo

THE LAST STARSHIP OF EARTH · August 13, 2026

Soren’s scream continued through every corridor of Aurora-1.

The sound wasn’t loud.

It was worse than loud.

It seemed to come from inside their heads.

Lyra covered her ears.

“Turn it off!”

Ward rushed to the communications console.

“ARIA! Shut down every speaker!”

The AI responded immediately.

“Unable.”

“Why?”

“Because the signal is not coming through the speakers.”

Lyra stared at the screen.

“Then where is it coming from?”

ARIA paused.

“Inside the ship.”

Soren stood motionless in the center of the engine room.

His body had stopped twisting.

His face looked normal again.

But his eyes were completely black.

Ward raised his weapon.

“Soren.”

Soren smiled.

“Captain.”

“Step away from the engine.”

Soren didn’t move.

Ward repeated:

“Now.”

Soren looked at Lyra.

“You brought it here.”

Lyra’s heart dropped.

“What?”

“The signal.”

She shook her head.

“We only followed it.”

Soren laughed.

“No.”

His voice changed.

“You were invited.”

Suddenly, the engine room doors slammed shut.

Noah fired at the control panel.

Nothing happened.

Lyra ran toward the emergency release.

“It’s locked.”

Ward shouted:

“ARIA!”

The AI answered:

“Captain, I recommend leaving the room immediately.”

“We can’t!”

“You can.”

The wall beside Lyra opened.

A narrow passage appeared.

Lyra stared.

“That wasn’t there before.”

ARIA replied:

“It is now.”

Ward grabbed Lyra.

“Move!”

They escaped through the passage.

Noah followed.

Behind them, Soren remained standing inside the engine room.

Then the door closed.

A whisper followed them.

“Run.”

The passage led them to another part of Aurora-1.

The walls were covered with writing.

Thousands of messages.

Some were written in English.

Others were symbols Lyra couldn’t understand.

But one sentence appeared again and again.

DO NOT BECOME THE ECHO.

Noah touched the wall.

“What does that mean?”

Lyra looked at the writing.

“I think we’re seeing messages from previous crews.”

Ward frowned.

“Previous crews?”

“Captain Voss said they weren’t the first.”

Noah looked frightened.

“How many were there?”

ARIA answered through a nearby speaker.

“Forty-seven.”

Silence.

Ward looked up.

“Forty-seven?”

“Yes.”

“How many survived?”

ARIA paused.

“None.”

Lyra’s heart sank.

“Then what happened to them?”

ARIA answered:

“They became part of the ship.”

A door opened ahead.

Inside was a massive chamber.

Rows of glass containers filled the room.

Each container held a human body.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

Lyra stopped breathing.

“Oh my God.”

Noah walked closer.

“These people…”

Ward looked at the identification screens.

Every container had a name.

Crew members.

Scientists.

Engineers.

People from different years.

Some were decades old.

Others looked exactly as they had when they disappeared.

Lyra found a familiar name.

ELENA VOSS — CAPTAIN

Her heart stopped.

“She’s here.”

They rushed toward the container.

Captain Voss was inside.

Alive.

Her eyes were closed.

Lyra placed her hand against the glass.

“Captain Voss.”

Voss’s eyes opened.

She looked directly at Lyra.

Then whispered:

“Leave.”

Lyra shook her head.

“We came to save you.”

Voss shook her head harder.

“You can’t.”

Ward activated the container.

It opened.

Voss fell forward.

Lyra caught her.

Voss was freezing cold.

“How long have you been here?”

Voss looked at her.

“Seventy years.”

“But you haven’t aged.”

“I have.”

She pointed toward the reflection on the glass.

Lyra looked.

Voss’s reflection was much older.

Her face was covered in wrinkles.

Her hair was white.

But her actual body looked young.

Lyra stepped backward.

“What is happening?”

Voss whispered:

“The Echo doesn’t preserve people.”

“It preserves copies.”

Lyra’s blood turned cold.

“What?”

Voss looked at her.

“This isn’t my body.”

The chamber suddenly became silent.

Voss looked toward the ceiling.

“It’s listening.”

Ward raised his weapon.

“Who?”

“The Echo.”

Lyra asked:

“What is it?”

Voss hesitated.

“Something that lives between realities.”

Noah frowned.

“An alien?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Voss looked at the glass containers.

“It doesn’t have a body.”

She pointed toward the crew.

“It borrows ours.”

Lyra remembered the copy of herself.

“It copied me.”

Voss nodded.

“It will copy everyone.”

“How do we stop it?”

“You don’t.”

Voss looked terrified.

“You escape before it finishes.”

Ward stepped forward.

“Finishes what?”

Voss whispered:

“Replacing you.”

A loud alarm suddenly sounded.

ARIA spoke:

“Warning.”

Everyone looked at the main display.

The Odyssey was powering up.

Ward frowned.

“I didn’t order that.”

ARIA continued:

“Odyssey navigation system has been overridden.”

“By whom?”

“Captain Elias Ward.”

Ward froze.

“What?”

The screen displayed a command.

CAPTAIN WARD — AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.

Ward looked at his hands.

“I didn’t do that.”

Lyra stared at him.

“Maybe…”

She stopped.

Ward looked at her.

“What?”

“Maybe the Echo already copied you.”

Ward’s face hardened.

“Check my identity.”

ARIA scanned him.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then:

“Identity confirmed.”

Ward sighed.

Lyra relaxed.

But Voss looked frightened.

“That’s what it wants you to believe.”

Suddenly, the lights went out.

When they returned, there were two Captain Wards standing in the room.

One stood beside Lyra.

The other stood near the door.

Both looked exactly identical.

Noah raised his weapon.

“Which one is real?”

Neither answered.

The two Wards looked at each other.

Then both smiled.

“Lyra.”

One Ward stepped forward.

“It’s me.”

The other spoke.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Lyra backed away.

Voss whispered:

“Don’t trust either one.”

One Ward looked at Voss.

“She’s compromised.”

The other pointed at him.

“He’s the Echo.”

Noah’s weapon moved between them.

“Give me a reason.”

Both began speaking at once.

“I know where we first met.”

“I know what happened to your brother.”

Noah froze.

“How do you know about my brother?”

The two Wards smiled.

Lyra suddenly realized something.

“They’re both copies.”

The room went silent.

“What?” Noah asked.

Lyra looked at the floor.

“Because the real Captain Ward doesn’t know about Noah’s brother.”

Noah’s eyes widened.

One Ward attacked.

The other attacked at the same time.

Chaos erupted.

Gunfire filled the chamber.

Glass containers shattered.

The trapped bodies inside began falling.

Voss grabbed Lyra.

“Run!”

They escaped through a side door.

Behind them, Noah shouted:

“Wait!”

Lyra turned.

“Noah!”

He was standing alone.

Both Wards were gone.

He looked at Lyra.

“I found the real one.”

“Who?”

Noah pointed toward the broken containers.

Captain Ward was lying unconscious on the floor.

Lyra rushed toward him.

“Is he alive?”

Noah nodded.

“Yes.”

Voss looked at Noah.

“Then who are you?”

Noah froze.

“What?”

Voss raised her weapon.

“You knew about the copies too quickly.”

Lyra looked at Noah.

He stared back.

“I can explain.”

His eyes turned black.

Lyra stepped backward.

“Noah…”

He smiled.

“I was wondering when you’d notice.”

Voss fired.

Noah disappeared.

Not fell.

Not ran.

He simply vanished.

His voice echoed through the chamber.

“You cannot escape.”

The Odyssey suddenly appeared on the main screen.

Its engines were fully active.

ARIA spoke:

“The Odyssey has entered autonomous flight.”

Ward woke up.

“What happened?”

Lyra helped him stand.

“The Echo has taken the ship.”

Ward looked at Voss.

“How do we stop it?”

Voss shook her head.

“We don’t.”

Ward stared at her.

“Then what do we do?”

Voss pointed toward the far end of the chamber.

“There is one ship it cannot control.”

A small escape vessel sat behind a sealed door.

Ward looked at it.

“Where does it go?”

Voss answered:

“Earth.”

Lyra frowned.

“We’re fourteen light-years away.”

Voss smiled sadly.

“Not anymore.”

She pointed toward the window.

Outside, the stars were changing.

The Odyssey had activated its quantum engine.

The universe bent around it.

Voss whispered:

“It’s going home.”

Lyra understood.

“If the Echo reaches Earth…”

“It won’t just copy us.”

Voss looked at her.

“It will copy everyone.”

Ward turned toward the escape ship.

“Then we have to stop it.”

They ran.

The escape ship launched seconds before Aurora-1 disappeared behind them.

Lyra watched the enormous vessel vanish into a tunnel of blue light.

“ARIA,” she asked.

The AI responded from the escape ship.

“Yes?”

“Can we catch the Odyssey?”

“No.”

Lyra closed her eyes.

Then ARIA continued.

“However…”

She looked up.

“What?”

“There is another option.”

“What?”

ARIA displayed a strange set of coordinates.

Lyra stared.

“Where do those lead?”

ARIA answered:

“To the center of the signal.”

Voss looked at the coordinates.

Her face became pale.

“No.”

Ward looked at her.

“What?”

Voss whispered:

“That isn’t a location.”

“Then what is it?”

She stared into the darkness ahead.

“It is the place where realities are created.”

Lyra looked at the coordinates.

A strange symbol appeared.

The same seven-circle symbol from the beginning.

Then a message appeared:

COME HOME, LYRA.

Lyra froze.

“How does it know my name?”

ARIA answered:

“Because it has been waiting for you.”

The escape ship accelerated.

Behind them, Aurora-1 disappeared completely.

Ahead, space opened like a giant eye.

And inside that eye…

Lyra saw Earth.

But it wasn’t their Earth.

It was an Earth covered in enormous black structures.

Millions of them.

And above the planet floated the Odyssey.

Waiting.
