The Ghost Army

Chapter 5

The Ghost Army

The Ghost Who Failed to Scare Anyone · August 3, 2026

The underground chamber became colder.

The glass containers around the room started shaking.

Inside them…

Dark shadows moved.

Whispers filled the air.

Hundreds of forgotten voices.

Mia stepped closer to Charlie.

“Tell me this isn’t what I think it is.”

Charlie stared at Victor.

“It is.”

Mia swallowed.

“What are they?”

Victor smiled proudly.

“The future.”

Victor walked around the machine.

“For centuries, humans feared death.”

“They searched for medicine.”

“They searched for magic.”

“They searched for answers.”

“But nobody understood the simplest truth.”

“Death is only a door.”

Charlie looked angry.

“You turned people into ghosts.”

Victor smiled.

“I gave them another life.”

“No.”

Charlie shook his head.

“You stole their lives.”

Victor’s expression became cold.

“You always were too emotional, brother.”

Mia looked at the machine.

“How many people are trapped here?”

Victor looked at the containers.

“More than you can imagine.”

“Famous people.”

“Scientists.”

“Rich businessmen.”

“Everyone wanted a second chance.”

Mia frowned.

“And you gave them this?”

Victor laughed.

“I gave them immortality.”

Charlie moved toward him.

“You murdered them.”

Victor raised his hand.

The shadows inside the containers suddenly stopped moving.

Charlie froze.

Mia noticed.

“Victor can control them.”

Victor smiled.

“Of course.”

“They are my creations.”

Suddenly…

One of the glass containers cracked.

A dark shadow escaped.

It moved across the room like smoke.

Mia stepped backward.

“What happens now?”

Victor smiled.

“Now you see the future.”

The shadow rushed toward Charlie.

Charlie disappeared.

The shadow passed through him.

Charlie reappeared near Mia.

“Okay.”

“I officially hate this place.”

Mia looked at him.

“You’re a ghost.”

“You can’t be hurt.”

Charlie looked offended.

“Have you ever tried being attacked by another ghost?”

“No.”

“Then don’t judge.”

More containers began breaking.

The ghost figures escaped.

The room filled with dark shapes.

Victor laughed.

“After all these years…”

“My army is finally free.”

Mia looked around.

“You created a ghost army?”

Victor smiled.

“Exactly.”

Charlie looked at Mia.

“Is this the part where we run?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“I was hoping you would say that.”

They ran through the underground tunnels.

Behind them, ghost shadows followed.

Mia held the old diary.

Charlie floated beside her.

“Where are we going?”

“Anywhere away from Victor.”

“Excellent plan.”

“Very detailed.”

Mia looked at him.

“Do you have a better one?”

Charlie thought.

“No.”

“I just wanted to complain.”

They reached the old secret room.

Mia closed the door.

For a few seconds…

Silence.

Then Charlie spoke.

“We need a weapon.”

Mia looked around.

“We have no weapons.”

Charlie pointed at himself.

“I have a ghost.”

Mia stared.

“How is that useful?”

“I don’t know.”

“But it sounds impressive.”

She sighed.

Mia opened Charles’s diary again.

A forgotten page had appeared.

She touched it.

The words slowly became visible.

If Victor succeeds, the mansion will become a prison for every soul he controls.

The only thing powerful enough to stop him is the first ghost.

Mia looked at Charlie.

“The first ghost.”

Charlie pointed at himself.

“That sounds like me.”

She nodded.

“Your death created the machine.”

“Your ghost can destroy it.”

Charlie became silent.

“So…”

“To save everyone…”

“I have to face the thing that created me.”

Mia looked at him.

“Are you scared?”

Charlie smiled sadly.

“I am a ghost who spent a hundred years trying to scare people.”

“I think I deserve to be scared once.”

They returned to the underground chamber.

Victor was waiting.

The ghost army stood behind him.

“I knew you would come back.”

Charlie floated forward.

“This ends now.”

Victor laughed.

“You still think you can defeat me?”

“No.”

Charlie smiled.

“I don’t.”

Victor looked confused.

“Then why are you smiling?”

Charlie pointed behind him.

Mia had secretly moved toward the machine.

She pulled out several wires.

The machine began shaking.

Victor’s expression changed.

“What are you doing?”

Mia smiled.

“Solving the mystery.”

The lights flashed.

The ghost army began disappearing.

Victor shouted.

“No!”

“You don’t understand!”

“I created perfection!”

Charlie looked at him.

“No.”

“You created loneliness.”

Victor rushed toward Mia.

But Charlie blocked his path.

For the first time…

The failed ghost looked powerful.

The air around him changed.

His eyes glowed.

His voice became deep.

“Victor.”

“You forgot one thing.”

“What?”

“I am the ghost who knows this house better than anyone.”

Charlie snapped his fingers.

Every door in the mansion slammed shut.

The walls moved.

The hidden passages opened.

The entire mansion awakened.

Victor looked around in shock.

“The house…”

“It listens to you?”

Charlie smiled.

“Apparently.”

The machine started collapsing.

The trapped ghosts were released.

Hundreds of souls rose into the air.

Some disappeared peacefully.

Others whispered thank you.

Victor fell to his knees.

“This can’t happen.”

Charlie looked at him.

“It already did.”

A bright light surrounded Victor.

The same machine he created began pulling him inside.

“No!”

“Charlie!”

“Help me!”

Charlie looked at his brother.

For a moment…

He remembered everything.

The good times.

The betrayal.

The pain.

Then he made his choice.

“I forgive you.”

Victor looked surprised.

The machine disappeared with a flash of light.

Silence returned.

The underground chamber was destroyed.

Mia and Charlie stood among the ruins.

She smiled.

“You saved everyone.”

Charlie shrugged.

“Not bad for a ghost who couldn’t scare anyone.”

Suddenly…

A small sound came from behind them.

Knock. Knock.

They turned.

A tiny ghost appeared.

A little boy.

He looked nervous.

“Excuse me…”

“Can you help me?”

Charlie smiled.

Mia looked at him.

“Don’t tell me.”

“Another mystery?”

Charlie laughed.

“Looks like my ghost career is just beginning.”

But neither of them noticed…

Deep beneath the mansion…

A single glass container was still glowing.

And inside…

Something was still alive.
