The Groom Who Wasn’t the Groom

Chapter 4

The Groom Who Wasn’t the Groom

The Mystery of the Missing Wedding Cake · July 22, 2026

For three full seconds, nobody moved.

Maya stared at the empty spot where the groom had been standing.

Rayyan stood beside her.

Zoya stood behind them.

And the wedding guests…

Well, they were mostly confused.

One auntie was still eating samosas.

Another was taking pictures.

Someone near the entrance whispered:

“Is this part of the wedding?”

Maya slowly turned around.

“Where did he go?”

Zoya pointed toward the empty space.

“He was literally standing there!”

“I know!”

“Then where is he?”

“I don’t know!”

Rayyan looked around.

“Everyone stay calm.”

Zoya looked at him.

“You’re saying that while looking like you’re about to faint.”

“I’m not about to faint.”

“You look pale.”

“That’s my natural complexion.”

Maya ignored them.

She looked toward the hotel entrance.

Nothing.

The windows.

Nothing.

The stairs.

Nothing.

The groom had vanished.

Again.

“Nobody leaves this hotel,” Maya announced.

A man near the buffet looked at her.

“Who are you?”

Maya paused.

Good question.

She didn’t know either.

“I’m…”

She looked at Rayyan.

“Who am I?”

Rayyan stared at her.

“That’s a philosophical question.”

“Rayyan!”

“Sorry.”

Zoya stepped forward.

“She’s the detective.”

The man looked confused.

“Is she a detective?”

“No.”

Maya glared at Zoya.

“Then why did you say that?”

“Because it sounds impressive.”

Rayyan nodded.

“She’s right.”

Maya sighed.

“Never mind.”

She turned toward the wedding guests.

“Everyone stay here.”

An elderly woman raised her hand.

“Can I go to the bathroom?”

Maya stared.

“Yes.”

The woman nodded.

“Thank you.”

Then she walked away.

Zoya whispered:

“This is going well.”

“Shut up.”

Maya turned toward the cake.

The red writing had disappeared.

The cake was completely white again.

She stepped closer.

“What?”

Rayyan looked at her.

“It’s gone.”

“What?”

“The message.”

He looked.

She was right.

I KNOW YOU REMEMBER

was gone.

There was no stain.

No writing.

Nothing.

Zoya slowly approached.

“Okay.”

She looked at the cake.

“Maybe I’m going crazy.”

Rayyan nodded.

“Maybe.”

Maya glared at him.

“Don’t encourage her.”

“I’m just being supportive.”

“You’re terrible at it.”

Suddenly, Zoya pointed toward the cake.

“Wait!”

Everyone looked.

She reached inside the cake.

Maya screamed.

“What are you doing?”

“Relax!”

Zoya pulled out something.

A small plastic bag.

Inside was a silver ring.

Maya stared.

“That’s not the diamond ring.”

“No.”

Zoya turned it over.

There was an engraving.

A + M

Rayyan frowned.

“A and M?”

Maya looked at him.

“Who is A?”

“I don’t know.”

Zoya suddenly looked nervous.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“Maybe A is the bride’s real name.”

Maya frowned.

“The bride’s name is Sarah.”

“Then who is A?”

Maya looked at the ring.

The answer came to her.

“Ayla.”

Silence.

Rayyan looked at her.

“Who is Ayla?”

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Zoya’s eyes widened.

“But the mysterious third child in the photograph…”

Maya slowly looked at her.

“What about her?”

“Maybe her name was Ayla.”

Rayyan stepped closer.

“Wait.”

Maya turned.

“What?”

“The photograph.”

“What about it?”

“The third child.”

He looked at Maya.

“She wasn’t a child.”

Maya frowned.

“What?”

“Look at the picture again.”

Maya took out her phone.

She had photographed it earlier.

She zoomed in.

The third child was standing slightly behind the others.

Maya stared.

Rayyan was right.

The girl looked different.

She wasn’t smiling.

She was scared.

And around her neck…

Was a silver locket.

The same locket Maya had found.

Maya’s heart started beating faster.

“She was afraid.”

Zoya nodded.

“Of what?”

Maya looked at Rayyan.

“I don’t know.”

Rayyan stared at the photograph.

“Maybe we should find out.”

They went to the hotel office.

The manager was a nervous man named Mr. Bashir.

He was sweating so much that Maya began to feel sorry for him.

“Mr. Bashir,” she said.

“Yes?”

“We need information.”

“About?”

“The hotel.”

He blinked.

“What about it?”

“Everything.”

He stared at her.

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“How long do you have?”

Maya looked at Rayyan.

“Maybe five hours.”

Mr. Bashir nearly fainted.

“Five hours?”

Zoya smiled.

“She’s joking.”

Maya wasn’t.

“Do you have old hotel records?”

Mr. Bashir nodded.

“Of course.”

“Fifteen years ago.”

His face changed.

Maya noticed.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

Rayyan leaned toward him.

“Sir.”

Mr. Bashir looked nervous.

“What?”

“You’re sweating.”

“It’s hot.”

“The air conditioner is on.”

“Maybe I’m sick.”

Maya crossed her arms.

“Tell us about the fire.”

Mr. Bashir immediately stood.

“I have work.”

Maya grabbed his arm.

“Sit.”

He sat.

Zoya looked impressed.

“Nice.”

Maya ignored her.

“What happened fifteen years ago?”

Mr. Bashir sighed.

“There was a fire.”

“We know.”

“One woman disappeared.”

“Her name?”

He hesitated.

“Mrs. Nadia.”

Maya’s eyes widened.

“The bride’s mother.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“Was she killed?”

“No.”

“Then where did she go?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who was responsible?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who was the third child?”

Mr. Bashir froze.

Maya saw it.

“You know.”

“No.”

“You do.”

“No.”

“Tell us.”

“No.”

Maya leaned forward.

“Mr. Bashir.”

He looked terrified.

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because I promised.”

“To whom?”

He looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“Her.”

“Who?”

“Mrs. Nadia.”

Maya froze.

“She’s alive?”

Mr. Bashir didn’t answer.

“Where is she?”

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

He whispered:

“Because she knows.”

“Knows what?”

Mr. Bashir looked at Maya.

“Who started the fire.”

Maya felt cold.

“Who?”

He opened his mouth.

But before he could speak…

A loud crash came from outside.

Everyone jumped.

They rushed into the hallway.

A large vase had fallen.

No one was there.

Except…

A note.

Maya picked it up.

STOP ASKING QUESTIONS.

Rayyan sighed.

“Someone really needs to improve their vocabulary.”

Maya looked at him.

“What?”

“Every note is basically the same.”

She stared.

He was right.

Every clue said the same thing.

Stop.

Leave.

Don’t ask.

Don’t remember.

Maya suddenly smiled.

Rayyan looked confused.

“Why are you smiling?”

“Because they’re scared.”

“Who?”

“Whoever is doing this.”

Zoya nodded.

“She’s right.”

Maya looked at the notes.

“Someone is trying to stop us.”

“Yes.”

“Which means…”

“They know we’re close.”

Rayyan smiled.

“Now you’re thinking.”

Maya looked at him.

“Was that a compliment?”

“Don’t get used to it.”

She smiled.

For a second, everything felt normal.

Then Rayyan’s expression changed.

“Maya.”

“What?”

“I found something.”

He held up a security photograph.

It showed the hotel entrance.

Time stamped fifteen years ago.

A little girl was walking into the hotel.

Maya.

Beside her was a boy.

Rayyan.

And behind them…

The third child.

Maya’s heart stopped.

She looked closer.

The third child was holding something.

A cake knife.

Maya’s eyes widened.

“Why was she holding that?”

Rayyan shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Then Maya saw something else.

A man was standing behind the children.

His face was hidden.

But Maya recognized his clothes.

Black suit.

Black gloves.

The same man from the cake.

The mysterious old man.

Maya pointed.

“That’s him.”

Rayyan looked.

“Who?”

“The man we’ve been seeing.”

“How old is this photograph?”

“Fifteen years.”

“So he was here.”

“Yes.”

Maya suddenly remembered.

The woman in the recording.

The fire.

The third child.

The cake.

The groom.

Everything was connected.

Then she remembered something else.

A voice.

From fifteen years ago.

A woman’s voice.

“Maya, don’t tell anyone.”

Maya’s eyes widened.

She dropped the photograph.

Rayyan grabbed her.

“What happened?”

Maya whispered:

“I remember.”

“What?”

“The third girl.”

“Who was she?”

Maya looked at him.

“Her name was Ayla.”

Zoya gasped.

“Who was she?”

Maya’s face became pale.

“She was the bride’s sister.”

Silence.

Rayyan frowned.

“Then why didn’t anyone mention her?”

“Because…”

Maya struggled to remember.

“Because she disappeared.”

“When?”

“The night of the fire.”

Rayyan’s expression changed.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“The bride said her mother disappeared.”

Maya stared.

“She never said anything about a sister.”

“Exactly.”

Zoya stepped closer.

“Why would everyone hide her?”

Maya looked at the wedding hall.

“Because maybe Ayla didn’t disappear.”

Rayyan’s eyes widened.

“Then where is she?”

Maya slowly turned.

“Maybe she’s still here.”

They returned to the wedding hall.

The guests were still there.

Maya looked around.

Everyone seemed normal.

Too normal.

Then she noticed someone.

A young woman.

Standing near the kitchen.

She was wearing a simple black dress.

Maya had never seen her before.

The woman looked directly at her.

Then turned away.

Maya followed.

“Hey!”

The woman started walking faster.

Maya ran after her.

Rayyan shouted:

“Maya!”

She ignored him.

The woman entered the kitchen.

Maya followed.

Empty.

She was gone.

Maya looked around.

“Where did she go?”

Rayyan entered behind her.

“Why do you keep running after mysterious people?”

“Because they keep running away!”

“Maybe they have somewhere to go.”

“Not helping.”

Zoya entered.

“I found something.”

Maya turned.

Zoya was holding a white wedding veil.

There was blood on it.

Maya’s eyes widened.

“Where did you find that?”

“Near the back door.”

Rayyan took it.

“Is it real?”

Maya stared at the blood.

“I don’t know.”

Suddenly…

Someone knocked on the kitchen door.

Three times.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Everyone froze.

Maya slowly approached.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

She opened the door.

Nobody.

But there was something on the floor.

A black envelope.

Maya picked it up.

Her name was written on it.

MAYA RAHMAN

Her hands shook.

She opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Maya stared.

It was her.

Fifteen years ago.

Standing in front of the burning hotel.

And beside her…

Was Ayla.

But the most terrifying part wasn’t the photograph.

It was the message written on the back.

“YOU DIDN’T SEE THE MURDER.”

Maya’s heart stopped.

Rayyan looked over her shoulder.

“What does that mean?”

Maya turned the photograph around.

There was another line.

“YOU WERE THE MURDERER.”

Silence.

Zoya’s face went pale.

“No.”

Maya shook her head.

“That’s impossible.”

Rayyan immediately took the photograph.

“You’re eight years old here.”

“I know.”

“You couldn’t have killed anyone.”

“I know!”

Maya’s voice broke.

Then another memory appeared.

Fire.

Screaming.

A knife.

A woman.

And Maya holding something.

Maya gasped.

The photograph fell from her hands.

Rayyan caught her.

“Maya?”

She looked at him.

“I remember the knife.”

“What?”

“I was holding it.”

Rayyan’s eyes widened.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

“I can’t!”

“Try!”

“I was scared!”

“Why?”

“I don’t know!”

Maya began crying.

Rayyan immediately softened.

“I’m sorry.”

He gently held her face.

“Don’t force yourself.”

“But what if I did it?”

“You didn’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know you.”

“You knew me fifteen years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me.”

Rayyan stared at her.

“I saw you that night.”

Maya stopped.

“What did you see?”

Rayyan’s eyes filled with emotion.

“You were crying.”

“Why?”

“You were holding the knife.”

Maya’s heart stopped.

“And?”

“You were standing beside the woman.”

“Was she dead?”

“No.”

Maya breathed again.

“Then what happened?”

Rayyan looked away.

“Someone came.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Rayyan!”

“I swear!”

“Then why won’t you tell me?”

“Because I was scared.”

“Of what?”

Rayyan looked into her eyes.

“Of losing you.”

Maya stared.

“What does that mean?”

Rayyan took a breath.

“That night, someone attacked you.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then what happened?”

“You fell.”

“Then?”

“I thought you were dead.”

Maya covered her mouth.

Rayyan continued.

“I ran to get help.”

“And when you came back?”

“You were gone.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then how did I survive?”

Rayyan shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Maya was silent.

Then Zoya whispered:

“Guys.”

They turned.

The wedding hall was empty.

Everyone was gone.

Maya frowned.

“Where did everyone go?”

Rayyan looked around.

“I don’t know.”

Then they heard a sound.

A slow clap.

Clap.

Clap.

Clap.

The groom appeared at the end of the hall.

Maya froze.

“You.”

He smiled.

“Hello, Maya.”

Rayyan stepped in front of her.

“Stay away from her.”

The groom laughed.

“You still protect her.”

Rayyan’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

The groom looked at Maya.

“Ask him.”

Maya stared at Rayyan.

“Ask me what?”

The groom smiled.

“Ask him why he remembers everything.”

Rayyan’s face changed.

Maya turned toward him.

“Rayyan?”

The groom took one step forward.

“Ask him why he lied.”

Rayyan grabbed Maya’s hand.

“Don’t listen to him.”

“Why?”

“Because he’s trying to confuse you.”

The groom laughed.

“Am I?”

He pulled out a photograph.

And threw it onto the floor.

Maya picked it up.

Her heart stopped.

The photograph showed Rayyan.

Fifteen years ago.

Standing beside the burning hotel.

Holding the mysterious black key.

And beside him…

Was the bride’s mother.

Alive.

Maya looked at Rayyan.

“You knew her.”

Rayyan didn’t answer.

“Rayyan.”

Silence.

“You knew her.”

He slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

Maya stepped backward.

“Why?”

“Because she asked me to protect you.”

Maya’s eyes widened.

“Protect me from what?”

Rayyan looked toward the groom.

“From him.”

The groom smiled.

“Too late.”

He suddenly pulled out a small black device.

The lights went out.

A loud explosion shook the hotel.

Zoya screamed.

Maya grabbed Rayyan.

Smoke filled the room.

And when the lights came back…

The groom was gone.

But on the floor…

Was the mysterious black key.

This time, there was a new message engraved on it.

THE DOOR IS OPEN.

Maya stared.

“Which door?”

Rayyan looked toward the far end of the hall.

A door had appeared there.

A door that had never been there before.

And standing beside it…

Was the mysterious old man.

He looked directly at Maya.

Then slowly opened the door.

Inside was complete darkness.

The old man whispered:

“Come.”

Maya looked at Rayyan.

“Should we?”

Rayyan stared at the door.

“No.”

Maya raised an eyebrow.

“You’re scared again?”

“Absolutely.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re coming with me.”

Rayyan sighed.

“I knew you’d say that.”

They walked toward the door.

Zoya followed.

“Wait!”

Maya turned.

“What?”

Zoya pointed at the wedding cake.

“Shouldn’t we take that?”

Everyone stared at her.

“Why?” Maya asked.

Zoya shrugged.

“Because it’s still the most important clue.”

Rayyan nodded slowly.

“She’s right.”

Maya sighed.

“Fine.”

Zoya grabbed a knife.

Rayyan grabbed the cake.

Maya grabbed the black key.

Together, they stepped through the mysterious door.

The door closed behind them.

And in the darkness…

A woman’s voice whispered:

“Welcome back, Maya.”

Maya froze.

She knew that voice.

She had heard it fifteen years ago.

It was the voice of the woman everyone believed was dead.

Maya whispered:

“Mrs. Nadia?”

The voice laughed softly.

“No, my dear.”

A figure stepped out of the darkness.

Maya’s heart stopped.

The woman looked exactly like the photograph.

Alive.

Older.

But unmistakable.

The bride’s mother.

Maya stared.

“You’re alive.”

The woman smiled.

“Yes.”

“Why did you disappear?”

“To protect my daughter.”

“From whom?”

The woman looked at Rayyan.

Then at the cake.

Then at Maya.

“From the person who has been standing beside you all night.”

Maya slowly turned toward Rayyan.

Her heart sank.

Rayyan’s face had gone pale.

The woman whispered:

“Your real enemy isn’t the groom.”

Maya stared.

“Then who is it?”

The woman pointed at Rayyan.

“Ask him what happened to Ayla.”

Maya’s blood ran cold.

Rayyan closed his eyes.

Maya whispered:

“Rayyan…”

He opened his eyes.

And for the first time that night…

He looked genuinely afraid.

Because somewhere in the darkness…

A little girl’s voice began laughing.

And Maya suddenly realized…

Ayla had never disappeared.

She had been watching them.

All along.
