The House by the Sea

Chapter 4

The House by the Sea

WHEN THE STARS FELL BETWEEN US · August 20, 2026

The house stood at the edge of the coast.

It was small, white, and surrounded by tall grass that moved with the ocean wind.

Emma stared through the car window.

Her heart was beating so fast she could barely breathe.

“She’s here,” she whispered.

Noah parked several meters away.

“Are you ready?”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

He smiled gently.

“Me neither.”

They walked toward the house together.

Emma stopped before the door.

For twenty years, she had imagined what her mother might look like.

In her memories, she was young.

Beautiful.

Always smiling.

But the woman behind this door had lived sixteen years without her.

Emma raised her hand.

Before she could knock, the door opened.

A woman stood there.

Her hair was gray.

Her face was older.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

Emma couldn’t move.

The woman covered her mouth.

“Emma?”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“Mom?”

Her mother stepped forward.

“My baby.”

Emma broke.

She ran into her mother’s arms.

They held each other tightly.

Neither could speak.

Twenty years of questions came out as tears.

“I’m sorry,” her mother whispered.

Emma shook her head.

“Why?”

“I’m sorry.”

“Why did you leave me?”

Her mother pulled back.

“I didn’t want to.”

“Then why?”

“Because your father begged me.”

Emma stared at her.

“My father?”

“He believed someone was trying to kill you.”

“Who?”

Her mother looked toward Noah.

“Come inside.”

They entered the house.

The living room was simple.

Old photographs covered the walls.

Emma noticed one immediately.

Her mother.

Her father.

And a much younger Noah.

She looked at him.

“You knew?”

“No.”

Her mother smiled sadly.

“Your grandmother brought him here once.”

Emma sat down.

“Tell me everything.”

Her mother looked at the ocean through the window.

“The night you were told I died, I was supposed to leave Bellmere.”

“Why?”

“Your father discovered that his brother, Richard, was involved in a criminal organization.”

Emma frowned.

“My uncle?”

“Yes.”

“He was stealing money from businesses.”

“And worse.”

Her mother’s voice became quiet.

“He was helping people disappear.”

Emma felt a chill.

“Disappear?”

“People who knew too much.”

Noah’s expression became serious.

“Was my father involved?”

“At first.”

Noah looked shocked.

“My father?”

“He helped Richard because he was threatened.”

“What happened?”

“Your father found out.”

Emma’s mother sat across from them.

“The two brothers fought.”

“Then?”

“Richard threatened your father.”

“He threatened me?”

“Yes.”

Her mother looked at Emma.

“He said he would hurt you if your father went to the police.”

Emma’s voice trembled.

“So Dad made everyone believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard was watching our family.”

Emma wiped her tears.

“But why didn’t you come back?”

Her mother looked down.

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Several times.”

“What stopped you?”

“Fear.”

Emma looked at her.

“You could have called.”

“I did.”

“How?”

“Through your grandmother.”

Emma’s eyes widened.

“My grandmother knew?”

“She knew everything.”

Emma stood.

“Then why did she never tell me?”

“Because she promised your father.”

Emma shook her head.

“Everyone kept making decisions for me.”

Her mother began crying.

“I know.”

Emma’s anger softened.

She sat beside her.

“I don’t hate you.”

Her mother looked at her.

“I just wish you had trusted me.”

“I know.”

They hugged again.

Noah stood near the window.

He watched them quietly.

After a while, Emma’s mother turned toward him.

“You should know something too.”

Noah looked at her.

“About my father?”

She nodded.

“Your father didn’t betray you.”

Noah froze.

“He didn’t?”

“He was forced to help Richard.”

“Then why did he disappear?”

“He tried to expose him.”

“What happened?”

“He was captured.”

Noah’s face went pale.

“Is he alive?”

Emma’s mother hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

“But you said—”

“I saw him once after he disappeared.”

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

Noah stepped closer.

“Where?”

“A private hospital.”

“Which hospital?”

“Saint Mary’s.”

Noah turned toward Emma.

“We need to go.”

Emma nodded.

But her mother grabbed her hand.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

She looked at Emma with fear.

“Richard knows you’re here.”

Emma’s heart stopped.

“What?”

“He has been watching this house.”

Noah moved toward the window.

A black car was parked on the road.

“Mom…”

Her mother stood.

“We have to leave.”

The car door opened.

Two men stepped out.

Noah locked the door.

“Back door?”

“Kitchen.”

They hurried through the house.

Emma grabbed her mother’s hand.

They reached the back door.

A loud crash came from the front.

Someone had broken the door.

“Go!” Noah shouted.

They ran toward the trees.

Footsteps followed.

Emma held her mother’s hand as they moved toward the cliff path.

Suddenly a man appeared in front of them.

Emma stopped.

The man smiled.

“Hello, Emma.”

She recognized him from an old family photograph.

Richard.

Her uncle.

Her mother’s face became pale.

“Richard.”

He looked at her.

“You look just like your father.”

Emma stepped backward.

“You killed my mother.”

Richard laughed.

“No.”

He looked toward Emma’s mother.

“She survived.”

“Then why did you keep her hidden?”

“Because she knew too much.”

Noah stepped between them.

“You ruined our lives.”

Richard smiled.

“Love was always your weakness.”

He looked at Emma.

“I knew you would come back.”

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

“You separated me from Noah.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father had something I wanted.”

“What?”

Richard looked toward the lighthouse in the distance.

“The original documents.”

Emma frowned.

“What documents?”

“Proof of everything.”

Her mother suddenly spoke.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Richard smiled.

“Your grandmother hid them.”

Emma remembered the silver key.

The letters.

The lighthouse.

Her eyes widened.

“The lighthouse.”

Richard’s expression changed.

“Where are the documents?”

Emma smiled faintly.

“You’ll never get them.”

Richard took a step forward.

“Then we’ll see.”

Noah grabbed Emma’s hand.

“Run!”

They ran.

Behind them, Richard shouted.

The three of them reached the car and drove away.

Only when they were several miles from the house did they stop.

Emma’s mother was crying.

Noah was breathing heavily.

Emma looked at both of them.

“We need to go back to the lighthouse.”

Her mother shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s where your grandmother hid the documents.”

Emma stared at her.

“You knew?”

Her mother nodded.

“She told me before she died.”

Emma looked at Noah.

“Then that’s where we’ll go.”

Noah took her hand.

“Together.”

Emma smiled.

For the first time, her mother smiled too.

But miles away, Richard stood beside the abandoned house.

He watched the road disappear.

Then he took out his phone.

“She’s going to the lighthouse.”

A voice answered.

“Are you sure?”

Richard smiled.

“Very.”

He looked toward the sea.

“And this time, she won’t leave with the truth.”
