THE LAST BATTLE FOR LOVE

Chapter 5

THE LAST BATTLE FOR LOVE

THE LAST LETTER I WROTE FOR YOU · August 4, 2026

The first bullet shattered the cabin window.

Elena screamed.

Adrian grabbed her and pulled her to the ground.

“Stay down!”

Another bullet struck the wooden wall.

Victor fired back through the broken window.

Adrian looked toward his mother.

She was standing outside.

Unprotected.

“Mom!”

She didn’t move.

The man beside her did.

He grabbed her arm and pulled her behind a black car.

Adrian stared at him.

His brother.

The stranger who looked like him.

The man who had just claimed they shared the same blood.

The man who had threatened Elena and his unborn child.

Adrian’s heart raced.

“Who is he?”

Victor shouted:

“Adrian, move!”

Adrian grabbed Elena’s hand.

They ran toward the back door.

Victor followed.

Bullets tore through the walls.

The cabin was no longer safe.

They escaped into the forest.

Adrian held Elena’s hand as they ran.

Her breathing was becoming faster.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Can you keep running?”

“I have to.”

Adrian stopped.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

He pulled her close.

“We don’t run anymore.”

“Adrian.”

“I’m done running.”

“We have to survive.”

“We will.”

“How?”

He looked into her eyes.

“Together.”

Elena shook her head.

“Your brother has an army.”

“Then we’ll find a way.”

“Your father wants us dead.”

“Then we’ll stop him.”

“Your mother created The Circle.”

“We’ll expose her.”

“Victor may have killed my father.”

“We’ll find out.”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“And if we don’t survive?”

Adrian touched her face.

“Then I’ll spend every second I have left loving you.”

She closed her eyes.

“Don’t say that.”

“Why?”

“Because I can’t lose you.”

Adrian pulled her into his arms.

“You won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

He kissed her forehead.

“But I know this.”

“What?”

“If the whole world stands against you…”

He held her tighter.

“I will stand against the whole world.”

Elena cried against his chest.

“And if they come for our baby?”

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“Then they will learn what a father is capable of.”

Elena looked at him.

“Adrian.”

He softened immediately.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

She touched his face.

“That’s the man I fell in love with.”

“The angry one?”

“The protective one.”

“I’ve always been protective of you.”

“I know.”

She smiled through her tears.

“That’s why I loved you.”

Adrian kissed her.

For a moment, the forest disappeared.

There were no guns.

No enemies.

No secrets.

Only two people who had spent seven years trying to find their way back to each other.

When they separated, Elena whispered:

“I wish we had more time.”

Adrian looked at her.

“We do.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Because I refuse to believe otherwise.”

She smiled.

“You always were stubborn.”

“Only when it comes to you.”

A gunshot echoed through the trees.

Adrian immediately pulled her behind him.

Victor appeared between the trees.

“Move!”

They ran again.

This time they reached an old road.

A black car waited.

Victor opened the door.

“Get in!”

Adrian helped Elena inside.

He followed.

Victor drove away.

The forest disappeared behind them.

For several minutes, no one spoke.

Then Adrian looked at Victor.

“Who is my brother?”

Victor’s hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“His name is Julian.”

“Julian Vale?”

“Yes.”

“How old is he?”

“Twenty-nine.”

Adrian froze.

“He’s older than me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did I never know about him?”

Victor didn’t answer.

Adrian’s voice became harder.

“Victor.”

“He was taken from your mother when he was a baby.”

“By whom?”

“Your grandfather.”

Adrian stared.

“Why?”

“Because he wanted an heir.”

“You mean Julian?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did my father raise me?”

Victor looked at him through the mirror.

“Because Julian wasn’t enough.”

Adrian felt sick.

“What does that mean?”

“Your grandfather wanted a perfect successor.”

“And Julian wasn’t?”

“He was too rebellious.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

She was silent.

Victor continued.

“Your grandfather wanted someone who would obey.”

“And that’s me?”

“Yes.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“They chose the wrong son.”

Victor nodded.

“That’s why Julian hates you.”

“Because he thinks I stole his life?”

“Because he thinks you were given everything he was denied.”

Adrian looked away.

“He doesn’t know me.”

“No.”

Victor’s voice became quiet.

“But he knows your father’s love.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

“Your father chose you.”

“Why?”

“Because Julian refused to become like him.”

Adrian stared.

“Then why does Julian work with him now?”

“Because your father promised him something.”

“What?”

Victor looked at Elena.

“Power.”

Elena’s face changed.

“Power over The Circle.”

Victor nodded.

“Julian wants to become its leader.”

Adrian looked out the window.

“So he wants me dead.”

“Yes.”

“Because I’m the heir.”

“No.”

Victor’s voice became serious.

“Because you’re the only person who can stop him.”

Adrian turned.

“Why?”

“Because The Circle has a rule.”

“What rule?”

“The leader must be chosen by blood.”

Adrian frowned.

“Julian is my brother.”

“Half-brother.”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

Victor looked at him.

“Your mother and Julian share the bloodline.”

Adrian froze.

“And me?”

“You’re different.”

“How?”

Victor hesitated.

“Because your father isn’t your biological father.”

Adrian stared.

“What?”

“You already know that.”

“Then who is?”

Victor looked at Elena.

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Adrian’s heart raced.

“Then why does The Circle consider me the heir?”

Victor didn’t answer.

Adrian grabbed his shoulder.

“Stop hiding things from me.”

Victor finally spoke.

“Because your father adopted you.”

Adrian froze.

“Adopted?”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

“Because your father knew your biological father.”

“Who?”

Victor looked ahead.

“Daniel.”

Elena gasped.

Adrian stared.

“Daniel?”

Victor nodded.

“Your biological father was Daniel’s closest friend.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

“Then why did my mother marry the man who killed him?”

Victor’s voice became quiet.

“Because she didn’t know.”

“Didn’t know what?”

“That your father was involved.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

She was staring at the floor.

Victor continued.

“Your mother believed he was protecting the family.”

“And when did she find out?”

“Seven years ago.”

Adrian froze.

“The night Elena disappeared.”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s mind raced.

Everything had happened on the same night.

Elena disappeared.

Daniel died.

His mother disappeared.

His father took control of The Circle.

And Adrian was left alone.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Because you were the key.”

Adrian frowned.

“The key to what?”

Victor looked at him.

“The Circle’s greatest secret.”

Silence.

Elena whispered:

“What secret?”

Victor didn’t answer.

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“Tell us.”

Victor took a deep breath.

“The Circle isn’t just an organization.”

“What is it?”

“A legacy.”

“Explain.”

“Every generation has one heir.”

“Why?”

“To protect the family.”

“From what?”

Victor looked at him.

“From the world.”

Adrian laughed.

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

Victor stopped the car.

They had reached an abandoned train station.

Adrian looked outside.

“Why are we here?”

“Because we need to wait.”

“For what?”

“Your mother.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“You trust her?”

“No.”

“Then why wait?”

“Because she has the evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“The evidence that can destroy The Circle.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“What evidence?”

Elena shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Victor looked at her.

“You do.”

She stared at him.

“What?”

“The letter.”

Elena’s face changed.

Victor continued:

“The final letter you wrote to Daniel.”

Elena stepped backward.

“You have it?”

“No.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Because I saw it.”

“When?”

“The night Daniel died.”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“You saw him.”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t save him.”

Victor looked away.

“I tried.”

“No.”

Elena’s voice broke.

“You stood there.”

“I was too late.”

“You were holding the gun.”

“I wasn’t the one who fired.”

“Then who?”

Victor looked at her.

“Your mother.”

Elena froze.

“My mother?”

Victor nodded.

“She shot Daniel.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“She did.”

“No!”

Elena began crying.

“You’re lying.”

“I saw it.”

“Why would she?”

“Because Daniel was going to expose her.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Adrian stepped toward her.

“Elena.”

She shook her head.

“My mother loved him.”

“People can love someone and still destroy them.”

She looked at Adrian.

“Is that what your father did?”

Adrian had no answer.

Victor continued:

“Your mother didn’t kill Daniel because she hated him.”

“Then why?”

“Because she believed killing him would save you.”

Elena froze.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“What did I have to do with it?”

“Everything.”

Victor looked at Adrian.

“Daniel wasn’t just your father’s enemy.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

“He knew the truth about you.”

“What truth?”

Victor hesitated.

Then he said:

“You were born with a rare genetic condition.”

Adrian stared.

“That’s what Elena’s medical records were about.”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

“But Elena isn’t sick.”

“No.”

“Then why did she have my medical records?”

Victor looked at Elena.

“Because she was trying to save you.”

Adrian turned toward her.

“Save me from what?”

Elena began crying.

“Adrian…”

“Tell me.”

She looked at him.

“Your father wanted to use you.”

“For what?”

“Your blood.”

Adrian froze.

Victor continued.

“The Circle has a genetic disease.”

“What disease?”

“One that passes through the bloodline.”

Adrian’s heart raced.

“Then why am I healthy?”

“Because you aren’t part of the bloodline.”

“Then why does my father want me?”

“Because you carry something they don’t.”

“What?”

Victor looked at Elena.

She whispered:

“The cure.”

Adrian stared.

“What?”

“Your blood can cure the disease.”

Silence.

Adrian felt sick.

“My father adopted me because of my blood?”

Victor nodded.

“He wanted to use you.”

“To cure The Circle?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“And you knew?”

“Yes.”

“That’s why you came back?”

“Yes.”

“To protect me?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because they would have killed you.”

Adrian turned away.

His mind was spinning.

All his life.

His father’s love.

His mother’s protection.

His family’s secrets.

None of it had been real.

He had been a tool.

A body.

A source of blood.

Nothing more.

Elena came toward him.

“Adrian.”

He stepped away.

“Don’t.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Please.”

“I need time.”

“You don’t have time.”

“Why?”

She looked terrified.

“Because your father has already taken the samples.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

“Your medical records.”

“Those were stolen?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Seven years.”

Adrian stared.

“Then why am I still alive?”

Elena whispered:

“Because they haven’t found the right treatment.”

Adrian looked at her.

“And the baby?”

Elena’s face changed.

“They believe the baby has the same blood.”

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

“No.”

“Adrian.”

“No one is touching my child.”

Elena grabbed his hand.

“I know.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I swear to you.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I will burn The Circle to the ground before I let them touch you or our baby.”

Elena began crying.

Adrian pulled her into his arms.

She held him tightly.

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop saying that.”

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

“I should have trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“I was afraid.”

“I know.”

She looked up.

“I love you.”

Adrian touched her face.

“I love you too.”

“Even now?”

“Especially now.”

She cried.

“Why?”

“Because now I know how much you’ve sacrificed.”

Adrian kissed her.

Then he whispered:

“We’re going to survive this.”

Elena nodded.

“We are.”

Suddenly, headlights appeared.

Victor stood.

“They’re here.”

Adrian reached for his gun.

“Who?”

Victor looked toward the station.

“Your brother.”

Julian stepped from the darkness.

He was alone.

He raised his hands.

“I’m not here to fight.”

Adrian didn’t lower his weapon.

“Then why are you here?”

Julian looked at Elena.

“To warn you.”

“About what?”

“Your father.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What about him?”

Julian’s voice became serious.

“He knows about the baby.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“We know.”

“No.”

Julian shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

“He doesn’t want the baby.”

Adrian froze.

“Then what?”

Julian looked at Elena.

“He wants you.”

Adrian stared.

“Why?”

“Because you’re the only person who can unlock the final vault.”

“What vault?”

Julian smiled bitterly.

“The one our grandfather built.”

Adrian’s heart raced.

“What is inside?”

“Everything.”

“The Circle’s records?”

“Yes.”

“Names?”

“Yes.”

“Money?”

“Yes.”

“Weapons?”

“Yes.”

Adrian stared.

“Then why does he need me?”

Julian’s face changed.

“Because the vault can only be opened by one person.”

“Who?”

Julian looked directly at Adrian.

“You.”

Adrian felt the room spin.

“Why?”

Julian whispered:

“Because you’re not the heir.”

Adrian frowned.

“Then what am I?”

Julian smiled sadly.

“The punishment.”

Silence.

Adrian didn’t understand.

Julian continued.

“Your grandfather created The Circle.”

“Yes.”

“He knew it would eventually destroy the family.”

“Then why create it?”

“To protect the family.”

“From what?”

Julian looked at Elena.

“From the people who wanted to destroy them.”

Adrian shook his head.

“This makes no sense.”

“It will.”

Julian stepped closer.

“Your grandfather made a final decision.”

“What decision?”

“To end The Circle.”

Adrian froze.

“Then why didn’t he?”

“Because he died.”

“How?”

“Your father killed him.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

Julian continued:

“Your father took control.”

“And my mother?”

“She helped him.”

Adrian stared.

“Then why is she fighting him now?”

“Because she realized what he had become.”

“Why didn’t she stop him?”

“She tried.”

“And failed.”

Julian nodded.

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at him.

“And you?”

“What about me?”

“Why are you helping us?”

Julian smiled.

“Because I don’t want to be my father’s son anymore.”

Adrian stared.

“You’re his son.”

“Yes.”

“Then why help me?”

Julian’s eyes became cold.

“Because you are the only person who can destroy him.”

Silence.

Adrian lowered his gun.

“What do you want?”

“Nothing.”

“That’s a lie.”

Julian looked at him.

“I want freedom.”

“From what?”

“The Circle.”

Adrian stared.

“Then help me destroy it.”

Julian nodded.

“That’s why I’m here.”

Suddenly, a car exploded outside.

The station shook.

Elena screamed.

Adrian grabbed her.

Victor shouted:

“GET DOWN!”

Gunfire erupted.

Julian pulled out his weapon.

“He’s here.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Who?”

Julian’s face became pale.

“Our father.”

Adrian froze.

His father stepped through the smoke.

Behind him were dozens of armed men.

And beside him stood Adrian’s mother.

Adrian stared.

“Mom?”

She looked at him.

“I’m sorry.”

Adrian’s heart broke.

“Why?”

She raised a gun.

“Because this is the only way.”

Elena stepped in front of Adrian.

His mother aimed at Elena.

“Move.”

Adrian stepped between them.

“No.”

His mother looked at him.

“Adrian.”

“Put the gun down.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because you won’t listen.”

“Then explain.”

His mother looked at Elena.

“She has to die.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

“No.”

“She knows too much.”

“No.”

“She knows where the vault is.”

“I know.”

“Then she has to die.”

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“You’re not touching her.”

His mother raised the gun.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“Adrian.”

“You’re choosing The Circle.”

His mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

“Then prove it.”

She couldn’t.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Put the gun down.”

His mother shook her head.

“I’m sorry.”

She fired.

Adrian jumped.

The bullet hit someone else.

Julian.

He fell.

Adrian screamed.

“JULIAN!”

Chaos erupted.

Victor returned fire.

Adrian pulled Elena behind him.

His mother stared at Julian.

Her face changed.

“Julian.”

Julian looked at her.

“You always choose him.”

She froze.

“What?”

“You always chose Adrian.”

“Julian…”

“You abandoned me.”

“No.”

“You let them take me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“Then why did you shoot me?”

His mother dropped the gun.

“I didn’t.”

Everyone froze.

Adrian looked at the weapon.

His mother wasn’t holding it.

A man stood behind her.

His father.

He had fired.

Adrian’s father smiled.

“Family reunions are always so emotional.”

Adrian raised his gun.

“Put yours down.”

His father laughed.

“Or what?”

Adrian stepped forward.

“I’ll kill you.”

His father stared.

“Now you sound like me.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice became steady.

“I sound like a father.”

His father frowned.

“What?”

Adrian looked at Elena.

Then at his mother.

Then at Julian.

“Because I’m fighting for my family.”

His father raised his gun.

“And I am too.”

He fired.

Adrian pulled Elena down.

The bullet missed.

Victor shot one of the guards.

Julian crawled toward his weapon.

Adrian grabbed Elena.

“Run!”

They ran.

Behind them, the station erupted into chaos.

They escaped through a side door.

Adrian and Elena ran toward the car.

Suddenly, Elena stopped.

Adrian turned.

“What?”

She looked behind them.

“Where’s Victor?”

Adrian froze.

Victor wasn’t there.

Neither was Julian.

His mother was gone.

And his father was gone.

Adrian’s heart raced.

Then he heard a voice behind him.

“Adrian.”

He turned.

His father stood at the end of the road.

Holding Victor at gunpoint.

Adrian’s blood turned cold.

“Let him go.”

His father smiled.

“Bring me Elena.”

“No.”

“Then Victor dies.”

Elena grabbed Adrian’s arm.

“Don’t.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I won’t trade you.”

His father laughed.

“You always were selfish.”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“She’s not a thing.”

“Everything is a thing.”

“Not her.”

His father raised the gun.

“Then choose.”

Adrian stared.

His father continued:

“Victor.”

He pointed the gun at him.

“Or Elena.”

Adrian’s heart shattered.

Elena stepped forward.

“Adrian.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I love you.”

“No.”

“I need you to listen.”

“Don’t.”

“If you have to choose…”

“Elena.”

“…choose Victor.”

Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.

“I can’t.”

“You have to.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“Because our baby needs you.”

Adrian grabbed her.

“No.”

She touched his face.

“Promise me.”

“No.”

“Promise.”

“I can’t.”

“Adrian.”

He cried.

“I can’t lose you again.”

She kissed him.

Softly.

Gently.

Like a goodbye.

Then she whispered:

“You never lost me.”

She turned.

And walked toward his father.

Adrian screamed.

“ELENA!”

She stopped.

Looked back.

And smiled.

“I’ll always be yours.”

Then she stepped into the darkness.

Adrian stood frozen.

His father pulled her away.

Victor shouted.

“ADRIAN!”

Adrian looked at him.

“Don’t let them take her!”

His father laughed.

“You should have chosen.”

Adrian’s eyes filled with rage.

He raised his gun.

“You made one mistake.”

His father stopped.

“What?”

Adrian’s voice became deadly calm.

“You thought I would choose.”

He fired.

The bullet struck the ground beside his father’s feet.

His father stepped back.

Adrian lowered the gun.

“I don’t choose.”

His father stared.

“I take back what belongs to me.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“She is mine.”

His voice broke.

“My family is mine.”

He looked at Victor.

“And I will destroy anyone who tries to take them.”

His father smiled.

“Then come to the Black House.”

Adrian froze.

“Tomorrow night.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s where the vault is.”

Adrian stared.

His father pointed at Elena.

“Bring her.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

“Why?”

His father smiled.

“Because she is the only one who knows the code.”

He disappeared into the darkness.

Adrian stood in the rain.

Alone.

His love was gone.

His brother was wounded.

His mother had betrayed him.

Victor was captured.

And his father had demanded one final meeting.

The Black House.

Tomorrow night.

Adrian looked toward the darkness.

He knew this was the end.

Or the beginning.

He picked up the white rose Elena had dropped.

There was a small piece of paper wrapped around its stem.

He opened it.

Three words.

TRUST NO ONE.

Then, beneath them, one final sentence.

EXCEPT YOUR HEART.

Adrian closed his eyes.

He remembered Elena.

Her smile.

Her voice.

Her hands.

Her love.

The woman he had lost seven years ago.

The woman he had found again.

The woman carrying his child.

He whispered:

“I am coming for you.”

Then he looked toward the Black House.

“And this time…”

His eyes became cold.

“…I’m bringing the truth with me.”

The next night came too quickly.

Adrian stood outside the Black House.

The place where his childhood had died.

The place where his father had built his empire.

The place where his family had buried its secrets.

He carried the final letter in his pocket.

The key around his neck.

And Elena’s ring in his hand.

He put the ring on his finger.

Then he walked inside.

The doors closed behind him.

A voice echoed through the darkness.

“Welcome home.”

Adrian looked up.

His father stood at the top of the stairs.

Elena stood beside him.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes met Adrian’s.

He saw fear.

But beneath the fear…

He saw hope.

Adrian smiled.

His father noticed.

“Why are you smiling?”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“Because I know something you don’t.”

“What?”

Adrian stepped forward.

“You think this is your ending.”

His father laughed.

“You’re wrong.”

Adrian’s eyes never left Elena.

“This is mine.”

His father frowned.

“Your what?”

“My beginning.”

Adrian took the key from around his neck.

He held it up.

“I know what the vault contains.”

His father’s smile disappeared.

Adrian continued:

“And I know how to destroy it.”

Silence.

Elena’s eyes widened.

Adrian had a plan.

But there was one thing he hadn’t told anyone.

Not Elena.

Not Victor.

Not his mother.

Not even Julian.

He had discovered the truth.

The final letter wasn’t written by Elena.

It had been written by his real father.

And the last sentence said:

ADRIAN, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, DO NOT TRUST THE WOMAN YOU LOVE.

Adrian looked at Elena.

His heart broke.

Because he knew the truth.

Someone had betrayed them.

And before sunrise…

He would discover who.

The doors locked behind him.

The lights went out.

And in the darkness, Elena whispered:

“Adrian…”

He answered:

“I’m here.”

Then her voice broke.

“Please forgive me.”

Adrian froze.

A gunshot echoed.

And Elena disappeared into the darkness.
