The Last Whisper

Chapter 6

The Last Whisper

THE WHISPERING LAKE AT BLACKWATER · August 21, 2026

The house shook beneath Elena’s feet.

Glass fell from the broken mirror.

The walls groaned.

Somewhere downstairs, Jonah was shouting her name.

“ELENA!”

She ran toward the stairs.

Then stopped.

Two figures stood below.

One was Jonah.

The other looked exactly like him.

Both were staring at her.

“Come down!” one shouted.

“Don’t listen to him!” the other screamed.

Elena’s heart raced.

She remembered Clara’s warning.

Don’t choose either.

She closed her eyes.

“What is my favorite childhood memory?”

Both men went silent.

Elena opened her eyes.

The Jonah on the left smiled.

“The summer we came here.”

Wrong.

Jonah hated this place.

The other Jonah answered immediately.

“You and Clara used to sit beside your grandmother’s fireplace and make stories about the moon.”

Elena stared.

That was true.

She ran toward him.

The false Jonah screamed.

“You don’t know what you’re doing!”

His face changed.

His skin stretched.

His mouth opened impossibly wide.

Black water poured from it.

Elena screamed.

The creature lunged.

Jonah grabbed Elena and pulled her through the doorway.

They ran.

Behind them, the creature shrieked.

The sound shattered the windows.

They reached the village.

Nobody was outside.

Every house was dark.

The lake had become completely still.

Jonah looked at the sky.

“The moon is red.”

Elena looked up.

He was right.

A deep red moon hung above Blackwater.

“What does that mean?”

“The lake is opening.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Elena held Clara’s necklace.

“Then we go now.”

Jonah stared at her.

“Go where?”

“To the lake.”

“You heard what Clara said.”

“I know.”

“She wants you to find the mirror.”

“And destroy it.”

Jonah shook his head.

“You don’t know what will happen.”

“No.”

Elena looked at the lake.

“But I know what happens if I do nothing.”

They walked to the water.

The surface began moving before they reached the shore.

A narrow path appeared across the lake.

The water separated.

A stone road emerged from beneath it.

Jonah stared.

“The old church.”

Elena stepped forward.

The water walls stood on both sides.

They walked between them.

Fish floated motionless in the air.

Old photographs drifted through the water.

Faces stared from the darkness.

Some whispered.

Some screamed.

Then Elena saw Clara.

She was standing ahead.

“Clara!”

Clara smiled.

“Keep walking.”

They followed her.

The path descended.

Soon the water rose above their heads.

But Elena could breathe.

It was as if an invisible bubble surrounded them.

Jonah whispered:

“This isn’t real.”

Clara looked back.

“It is more real than anything you’ve ever known.”

They reached the old church.

It stood beneath the lake.

Its windows glowed faintly.

Clara opened the door.

Inside were hundreds of people.

They stood silently in the pews.

Elena recognized some faces from the photographs.

People who had disappeared decades ago.

At the front stood the Drowned Mother.

But she was different now.

She no longer wore a white dress.

She wore Elena’s mother’s clothes.

Her face was Elena’s mother’s face.

Elena stopped.

“Mom?”

The creature smiled.

“You always wanted to see me again.”

Elena’s heart broke.

“That’s not my mother.”

The creature laughed.

The sound echoed through the church.

“Good.”

Its face changed.

It became Clara.

Then Jonah.

Then Elena.

Then something ancient.

“You are learning.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Give me my sister.”

The creature pointed toward the altar.

Clara was standing there.

But she looked weak.

“Take her.”

Elena stared.

“What do you want?”

The creature smiled.

“Your name.”

Jonah grabbed Elena.

“Don’t answer.”

The creature laughed.

“Names are powerful.”

It walked toward them.

“Give me yours, Elena.”

“No.”

“Give it to me and Clara goes free.”

Elena looked at Clara.

Clara shook her head.

“Don’t.”

The creature whispered:

“You have seven seconds.”

Seven.

Six.

Five.

Elena stepped forward.

“I’ll give you my name.”

Jonah shouted:

“No!”

Clara screamed:

“LENA, DON’T!”

Elena smiled.

Then said:

“My name isn’t Elena.”

The creature stopped.

“What?”

Elena held up Clara’s necklace.

“My mother named me Elena.”

She looked at Clara.

“But Clara gave me another name.”

The creature became angry.

“What name?”

Elena smiled.

“Lena.”

The church shook.

The creature screamed.

“You cannot hide behind a nickname!”

Elena stepped forward.

“You don’t understand.”

She looked around at the trapped souls.

“You only have power over people who believe you own them.”

The creature’s face cracked.

Elena shouted:

“You don’t own me!”

The trapped souls began whispering.

Then louder.

“You don’t own us.”

The Drowned Mother screamed.

The church windows shattered.

Black water flooded inside.

The creature rose into the air.

Its body stretched.

Its face disappeared.

It became a mass of darkness.

Jonah grabbed Clara.

“Run!”

Elena grabbed her sister’s hand.

The old church began collapsing.

The souls moved toward the doors.

One by one, they disappeared into the light.

The Drowned Mother screamed behind them.

“You cannot destroy me!”

Elena turned.

The black mirror stood behind the altar.

The mirror from her grandmother’s house.

It had followed them.

Clara shouted:

“Break it!”

Elena ran toward it.

The creature lunged.

Jonah threw a broken wooden bench at it.

“NOW!”

Elena picked up a piece of stone.

She struck the mirror.

CRACK.

Nothing.

She struck it again.

CRACK.

The creature screamed.

“STOP!”

Elena raised the stone.

“For Clara.”

She struck it a third time.

CRASH!

The mirror shattered.

A wave of darkness exploded across the church.

The Drowned Mother screamed.

Every trapped soul screamed with her.

Then silence.

The lake became completely still.

Elena woke on the shore.

Morning sunlight warmed her face.

She opened her eyes.

Jonah was sitting beside her.

“You’re alive.”

She smiled weakly.

“So are you.”

He laughed.

Then Elena looked around.

“Clara?”

Jonah pointed.

Her sister was lying nearby.

Elena ran to her.

“Clara?”

Clara opened her eyes.

For a moment, Elena was afraid.

Then Clara smiled.

“Lena.”

Elena began crying.

She hugged her.

“You came back.”

Clara whispered:

“So did you.”

They held each other.

The lake behind them was silent.

For the first time in generations, Blackwater was calm.

Three days later, the village changed.

The old church bell was found on the shore.

The names carved beneath the lake disappeared.

The photographs turned blank.

The house at the end of Hollow Road collapsed.

And every person who had disappeared from Blackwater was finally remembered.

Some were never found.

Some were.

But Clara survived.

She had aged only a few months.

Not seven years.

Nobody could explain it.

Father Elias simply said:

“The lake doesn’t follow human time.”

Elena asked him one final question.

“What was the Drowned Mother?”

He looked toward the water.

“A guardian.”

“Of what?”

Father Elias smiled sadly.

“Something much older.”

Elena felt a chill.

“Is it gone?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what did we destroy?”

“The thing that was using the lake.”

Elena looked toward Blackwater.

The surface was calm.

But beneath it, something moved.

Father Elias whispered:

“Some evil doesn’t die.”

“It only goes quiet.”

That evening, Elena and Clara sat beside the lake.

Jonah joined them.

The sunset turned the water silver.

Clara looked at Elena.

“Do you remember the first photograph?”

“The one of us as children?”

“Yes.”

Elena nodded.

“Why was that woman standing behind us?”

Clara smiled.

“Because she was waiting.”

“For us?”

“No.”

Clara looked at the lake.

“For someone else.”

Elena frowned.

“Who?”

Clara didn’t answer.

A breeze moved across the water.

Then they heard it.

A whisper.

Very faint.

Almost impossible to hear.

“Elena…”

She froze.

Jonah looked at her.

“Did you hear that?”

Clara nodded.

The three of them stared at the lake.

Another whisper came.

This time, it was clearer.

“Clara…”

The water rippled.

Then everything stopped.

Elena slowly stood.

“It’s still there.”

Jonah shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward the opposite shore.

A little girl stood beneath the trees.

She was wearing a white dress.

Her face was hidden by long black hair.

Elena stared.

“Who is that?”

The girl slowly raised her head.

Then smiled.

Clara grabbed Elena’s hand.

“Don’t look at her.”

But it was too late.

The girl whispered:

“I know your name.”

The lake suddenly went black.

Then the girl disappeared.

Elena looked at Clara.

“What happens now?”

Clara squeezed her hand.

“We leave.”

“Where?”

“Anywhere but here.”

Jonah nodded.

They walked away from the lake together.

Behind them, the water remained silent.

But deep beneath Blackwater…

Something opened its eyes.

And for the first time in a hundred years—

It whispered a new name.

“Jonah.”

He stopped walking.

Elena turned.

“Jonah?”

He looked back at the lake.

His face had gone completely pale.

“What?”

Jonah slowly smiled.

But it wasn’t his smile.

His eyes turned black.

And somewhere beneath the water, the Drowned Mother began to laugh.
