The Letter I Never Sent

Chapter 3

The Letter I Never Sent

THE DAY YOU STOPPED WAITING · August 12, 2026

Maya didn’t open the letter that night.

She carried it home like it was something alive.

Something fragile.

Something dangerous.

She placed it on her bedside table and stared at it for almost an hour.

The envelope was old.

The edges were slightly worn.

Adrian’s handwriting was still the same.

She remembered that handwriting.

He used to leave little notes inside her books.

Eat something.

Don’t work too late.

I miss you.

Once, he had written on a piece of paper and slipped it into her coat pocket.

If I ever forget to tell you, remember this: you are my favorite part of every day.

Maya had kept that note for years.

Now she was holding a letter he had written when he had supposedly decided never to return.

Her fingers moved toward the envelope.

Then stopped.

She wasn’t ready.

Not yet.

Instead, she went to sleep.

Or at least she tried.

At 3:17 in the morning, she woke from a dream.

Adrian was standing beside the river.

He was smiling.

She ran toward him.

But just before she reached him, he disappeared.

Maya opened her eyes.

Her room was dark.

She touched her face.

Tears.

Again.

She turned toward the bedside table.

The letter was still there.

“Why did you come back?” she whispered.

There was no answer.

The next morning, Maya went to work.

She tried to behave normally.

She answered emails.

She attended meetings.

She smiled when people spoke to her.

But her mind kept returning to one thought.

Adrian is here.

At noon, her phone vibrated.

A message.

Adrian: Can I see you?

Maya stared at the screen.

Her heart said yes.

Her pride said no.

Her memories said run.

After several minutes, she typed:

Maya: Where?

His reply came immediately.

Adrian: The bookstore.

Her heart stopped.

The bookstore.

The place where they had first met.

She almost laughed.

Of all the places in the city, he had chosen the one place capable of making her remember everything.

When Maya arrived, Adrian was standing outside.

He looked nervous.

“You came.”

“I said I would.”

He smiled faintly.

“You always kept your promises.”

She looked away.

“Not all of them.”

His smile disappeared.

“I deserved that.”

They went inside.

The bookstore had changed.

The walls were painted differently.

The shelves were larger.

But the smell of old paper was the same.

Maya walked slowly toward the back.

“This place feels smaller.”

Adrian smiled.

“We were younger.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“We were happier.”

He didn’t answer.

They sat at a small table near the window.

For a few moments, neither spoke.

Then Adrian placed a cup of coffee in front of her.

Maya looked at it.

“Black coffee. No sugar.”

He nodded.

“You remembered.”

“I remember everything.”

She looked into his eyes.

“That’s the problem.”

He lowered his gaze.

“I know.”

Maya wrapped both hands around the cup.

“Tell me something.”

“Anything.”

“Did you ever love someone else?”

Adrian looked surprised.

“No.”

“Not even once?”

“No.”

“Three years is a long time.”

“I know.”

“You could have moved on.”

“I tried.”

Her eyes lifted.

“You tried?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought you had.”

Maya said nothing.

“I went on one date,” he continued.

She felt something twist inside her.

“What happened?”

“I spent the entire evening comparing her to you.”

Maya looked away.

“That wasn’t fair to her.”

“I know.”

“Did you tell her?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“She told me I was still in love with someone else.”

Maya smiled sadly.

“She was right.”

“Yes.”

Silence returned.

Then Adrian reached into his coat pocket.

He took out another envelope.

Maya stared at it.

“Another one?”

He nodded.

“I wrote this one the night I left.”

“You said you wrote hundreds.”

“I did.”

“Why are you showing me these now?”

“Because I don’t want there to be anything between us that you don’t understand.”

She didn’t take the envelope.

“I don’t need every detail.”

“I do.”

“Why?”

“Because if I have any chance of being part of your life again, I need to stop hiding behind silence.”

Maya looked at him for a long time.

Then she took the letter.

This time, she opened it.

The paper inside was folded several times.

Her eyes moved over the first line.

Dear Maya,

Her breath caught.

She continued.

If you’re reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth.

Her eyes filled with tears.

I am leaving because my family needs me. But that’s not the whole truth.

Maya’s hands began to shake.

The whole truth is that I am terrified.

I’m terrified that if you come with me, you’ll lose the life you deserve.

I’m terrified that I’ll become someone you have to save.

And I’m terrified that one day you’ll look at me and regret choosing a man whose life became a burden.

She stopped reading.

Adrian watched silently.

“Why didn’t you tell me this?”

“I couldn’t.”

She looked at him.

“You should have trusted my love.”

“I know.”

Maya continued.

You once told me that love means choosing someone even when life becomes difficult.

I believed you.

But I was too afraid to let you choose me.

Her vision blurred.

She wiped her tears and kept reading.

Maybe one day you’ll hate me.

Maybe you’ll meet someone who gives you everything I couldn’t.

If that happens, I hope you let yourself be happy.

Please don’t spend your life waiting for a man who doesn’t know how to come home.

Maya stopped.

The room disappeared around her.

She couldn’t hear the customers.

Couldn’t hear the rain outside.

Couldn’t hear anything except the sound of her own heart breaking all over again.

At the bottom of the letter were the final words.

I love you enough to leave.

Maya slowly lowered the paper.

Adrian looked at her.

She whispered,

“That wasn’t love.”

He looked confused.

“That was fear.”

“Yes.”

“You weren’t protecting me.”

“I thought I was.”

“You were protecting yourself from finding out whether I would stay.”

Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Maya folded the letter.

“You made the decision for both of us.”

“I know.”

“And you lost three years with me.”

“I know.”

She stood.

Adrian stood too.

“Maya.”

She looked at him.

“I loved you every day.”

She closed her eyes.

“Please don’t say things like that.”

“Why?”

“Because some part of me still believes you.”

He took one step closer.

“Then believe me.”

She opened her eyes.

“I don’t know how.”

“Then let me show you.”

For a moment, they stood only inches apart.

Maya could feel his breath.

She remembered everything.

The rain.

The river.

His hands.

His voice.

The way he used to say her name when he thought she wasn’t listening.

Her heart wanted to forget the pain.

But her heart also knew forgetting was not forgiveness.

Adrian slowly reached for her hand.

This time, she didn’t pull away.

His fingers touched hers.

A small touch.

Nothing more.

Yet it felt like three years of loneliness collapsing between them.

Maya whispered,

“I missed you.”

Adrian’s eyes closed.

“I missed you too.”

“I hated you.”

“I know.”

“I waited for you.”

“I know.”

“I stopped waiting.”

His eyes opened.

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“And now I don’t know what comes next.”

Adrian gently squeezed her hand.

“Neither do I.”

For the first time, that uncertainty didn’t frighten her.

Maybe love didn’t need promises anymore.

Maybe it needed truth.

As they walked out of the bookstore, rain began falling.

Maya smiled.

Adrian looked at her.

“You still love the rain?”

She looked up at the sky.

“More than ever.”

He opened his umbrella.

She laughed.

“It’s still too small.”

He smiled.

“I know.”

They stood beneath it together.

Just like the first day.

But this time, neither of them ran away.

And as Maya looked at him, she realized something.

She wasn’t waiting for Adrian anymore.

She was walking beside him.

There was a difference.

A painful, beautiful difference.

Because waiting had been about hope.

But choosing him again would have to be about trust.

And trust was something Adrian would have to earn.

One day at a time.
