The Promise Beneath the Moon

Chapter 4

The Promise Beneath the Moon

A THOUSAND QUIET WAYS TO LOVE YOU · August 20, 2026

The old chapel stood at the edge of the cliffs.

Its stone walls were covered with ivy, and a single lantern burned beside the wooden door.

Mia stopped when she saw it.

“He’s here?”

Her mother nodded.

“Your father has been waiting for this day for fifteen years.”

Mia’s heart pounded.

She had imagined this moment countless times.

She had imagined her father walking through the door when she was a child.

She had imagined him calling her name.

She had imagined running into his arms.

But now that the moment was real, she was afraid.

“What if he doesn’t recognize me?”

Her mother touched her cheek.

“He has carried your photograph everywhere.”

Mia swallowed.

Julian stood beside her.

“You don’t have to be afraid.”

She looked at him.

“I’m terrified.”

He smiled softly.

“Then I’ll be terrified with you.”

She smiled through her tears.

Together, they entered the chapel.

A man stood near the window.

His back was toward them.

His hair was gray.

His shoulders were thinner than Mia remembered.

But somehow, she knew.

“Papa?”

The man turned.

Mia stopped breathing.

Her father stared at her.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then his eyes filled with tears.

“Mia.”

She ran to him.

He opened his arms.

She fell against his chest.

Her father held her like he had been waiting for that moment for his entire life.

“My little girl.”

Mia cried.

“You were alive.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You left me.”

“I know.”

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

She pulled away.

“You always say that.”

Her father looked at her.

“Because it was true.”

Mia wiped her tears.

“Tell me everything.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

They sat together inside the chapel.

Her father took a deep breath.

“Your uncle Daniel wanted something I discovered.”

“What?”

“A financial network.”

Mia frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Daniel had been stealing money from several companies. But the money wasn’t the worst part.”

“Then what was?”

“He was using those companies to hide something much bigger.”

Her mother spoke quietly.

“People.”

Mia looked at her.

“People?”

“People who needed to disappear.”

Her father nodded.

“Daniel helped powerful people erase identities and move money across countries.”

Mia stared at him.

“And you found out?”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

“I collected evidence.”

He looked toward Julian.

“Julian’s father helped me.”

Mia looked at Julian.

“That’s why your families were connected.”

Julian nodded.

“My father tried to expose Daniel.”

“What happened to him?”

“He disappeared.”

Julian’s voice was quiet.

“We never found him.”

Mia reached for his hand.

“I’m sorry.”

He squeezed her fingers.

Her father continued.

“Daniel discovered that I had the evidence.”

“So he tried to kill you?”

“Yes.”

“But why didn’t he kill Mom?”

“He thought she knew where the evidence was.”

Her mother looked down.

“I didn’t.”

“Daniel believed you did.”

Mia shook her head.

“Where is the evidence now?”

Her father looked at her.

“Your grandmother hid it.”

“Where?”

“In the bookstore.”

Mia remembered the blue book.

“The letters.”

Her father smiled.

“You found them.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Mia suddenly remembered something.

“Daniel has the blue book.”

Her father’s expression changed.

“What?”

“He took it.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Her father stood.

“We have to get there before he finds the evidence.”

Julian stood too.

“How do we know what he’s looking for?”

Mia thought about the letters.

“The hidden compartment.”

Her father shook his head.

“There’s something deeper.”

He reached into his coat.

He took out a small silver key.

Mia stared.

“The key.”

Her father nodded.

“Your grandmother gave this to me before I disappeared.”

“You had it all these years?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you use it?”

“Because the lock could only be opened by you.”

Mia frowned.

“Me?”

He nodded.

“Your grandmother designed it that way.”

They hurried back toward the town.

The bookstore was dark when they arrived.

The front door was open.

Mia’s heart sank.

“He’s inside.”

They entered quietly.

Books were scattered across the floor.

Drawers had been pulled open.

The blue book was lying on the counter.

Daniel was nowhere to be seen.

Mia picked it up.

The hidden compartment was empty.

Her father looked around.

“He found it.”

“What?”

“The evidence.”

Mia’s heart raced.

“Where would he go?”

Her mother suddenly pointed toward the back wall.

“The old reading room.”

Mia remembered.

Her father had taught her to read there.

She ran.

Behind the bookshelf was a small wooden door.

She inserted the silver key.

Click.

The door opened.

Inside was a tiny room.

There was a desk.

A chair.

And a single box.

Mia opened it.

Inside were documents, photographs, bank records, and a flash drive.

Her father sighed.

“That’s everything.”

Mia picked up a photograph.

Daniel stood beside several unfamiliar men.

Her face hardened.

“We need to give this to the police.”

“Yes.”

Then the lights went out.

Everyone froze.

A voice came from the darkness.

“You won’t.”

Daniel.

Mia’s heart raced.

Her father stepped in front of her.

“Daniel.”

A flashlight switched on.

Daniel stood near the entrance.

He held the blue book.

“You were always too stubborn.”

Mia’s father stared at him.

“You ruined everything.”

Daniel laughed.

“No.”

“You destroyed our family.”

“I gave this family a future.”

“You stole from innocent people.”

“I took what I deserved.”

Mia stepped forward.

“You made me believe my parents were dead.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I was protecting myself.”

“Not me.”

His expression hardened.

“You were never supposed to find out.”

Mia held the evidence box.

“But I did.”

Daniel reached for his coat.

Julian stepped forward.

“Don’t.”

Daniel stopped.

“You think you can stop me?”

Julian looked at him.

“No.”

He pointed toward the front door.

“But the police can.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Sirens echoed outside.

Mia’s father smiled.

“I sent the evidence ahead.”

Daniel looked around.

“You wouldn’t.”

“I did.”

Daniel suddenly ran toward the back door.

Julian chased him.

Mia followed.

They reached the alley.

Daniel tried to escape, but police officers surrounded him.

He stopped.

For a moment, he looked at Mia.

“You’ll regret this.”

Mia shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at her father.

“I already lost fifteen years.”

Then she turned away.

“I won’t lose another.”

Daniel was arrested.

The evidence was handed over.

The investigation that had begun fifteen years ago was finally over.

But Mia knew there was still one mystery.

Julian’s father.

They had never found him.

That night, Mia sat outside the bookstore with Julian.

The city was quiet.

She leaned against his shoulder.

“I thought finding the truth would make everything feel better.”

“Doesn’t it?”

“No.”

She smiled sadly.

“It just makes everything real.”

Julian looked at her.

“What do you need?”

She thought for a moment.

“You.”

He smiled.

“I’m here.”

Mia looked at their hands.

“When did you start loving me?”

Julian laughed softly.

“I think I was too young to understand it at first.”

“How young?”

“Seventeen.”

Mia looked surprised.

“Seventeen?”

“I saw you sitting beneath the oak tree.”

“The day I was crying?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you talk to me?”

“I wanted to.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because you looked like someone who needed silence.”

Mia smiled.

“You remembered.”

“I remember everything.”

He reached into his pocket.

There was a small folded piece of paper.

Mia opened it.

It was another letter.

Dear Mia,

I promised your father I would protect you.

But somewhere along the way, I stopped protecting you because I was afraid.

I was afraid that if you knew how much I loved you, you would run.

Mia looked at him.

“I wouldn’t have.”

“I know that now.”

She folded the letter.

“You should know something too.”

“What?”

“I think I fell in love with you before I realized it.”

Julian smiled.

“When?”

“The day you brought me coffee.”

He laughed.

“That early?”

“Maybe.”

They sat together beneath the night sky.

No secrets.

No lies.

No fear.

Just two people finally allowed to love each other.

Then Mia noticed something inside the envelope.

A final photograph.

She turned it over.

Her heart stopped.

It showed Julian’s father.

Alive.

Standing beside a woman Mia didn’t recognize.

On the back was a date.

Tomorrow.

Mia looked at Julian.

“He might still be alive.”

Julian took the photograph.

His face changed.

“Then tomorrow, we find him.”

Mia smiled.

“Together.”

He took her hand.

“Always.”

Above them, the moon shone softly over the quiet street.

And for the first time, Mia understood what the letters had been trying to teach her.

Love was not always loud.

Sometimes love was waiting.

Sometimes it was staying.

Sometimes it was a hand reaching for yours in the dark.

And sometimes…

It was a thousand quiet ways of saying,

I will never leave you again.
