THE THING BENEATH THE HOUSE

Chapter 3

THE THING BENEATH THE HOUSE

THE HOUSE THAT BREATHED · August 4, 2026

The scream stopped.

Mara Voss stood frozen.

Caleb Rook held his gun with both hands.

Father Elias Crowe stared at the floor.

No one spoke.

The last words Ethan had screamed continued echoing through the room.

IT’S COMING UP.

Then…

Something struck the floor beneath them.

BOOM!

Mara jumped.

Another strike.

BOOM!

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Father Elias stood suddenly.

“We have to leave.”

Mara stared at him.

“Where?”

“Anywhere.”

Caleb looked toward the door.

“Which way?”

Father Elias shook his head.

“Don’t ask me.”

Mara frowned.

“You’ve been studying this house for years.”

“I studied what was above.”

He looked at the floor.

“I never understood what was below.”

Another impact.

BOOM!

The floor cracked.

Mara stepped backward.

“Then tell us what you do know.”

Father Elias looked at her.

“The house was built in 1891.”

“By whom?”

“Edmund Blackthorn.”

Mara frowned.

“The Blackthorn family?”

Father Elias nodded.

“Edmund was a doctor.”

Caleb looked confused.

“A doctor built this?”

“Not just a doctor.”

Father Elias lowered his voice.

“He was obsessed with death.”

Mara stared.

“Death?”

“Yes.”

Father Elias walked toward the wall.

There was an old photograph hanging there.

It showed a tall man with a long beard.

His eyes were cold.

“Edmund Blackthorn believed death wasn’t natural.”

Mara crossed her arms.

“Then what did he believe?”

“That death was a door.”

Caleb frowned.

“A door to where?”

Father Elias looked at him.

“Somewhere else.”

The floor shook again.

BOOM!

Mara shouted:

“Can we discuss this while moving?”

Father Elias nodded.

“Yes.”

They ran.

The corridor outside had changed.

The door they had entered through was gone.

Instead…

There were three doors.

Mara stared.

“Which one?”

Father Elias looked at them.

“The left.”

Caleb pointed.

“Why?”

“Because the middle one leads down.”

“And the right?”

“Up.”

Mara frowned.

“We need to get outside.”

Father Elias shook his head.

“Outside no longer exists.”

Mara stared.

“What?”

He pointed toward the windows.

Mara looked.

The windows showed nothing.

No forest.

No sky.

No ground.

Only darkness.

A black void stretched beyond the glass.

Mara stepped backward.

“Where are we?”

Father Elias whispered:

“Inside.”

Mara shook her head.

“Inside what?”

Father Elias looked at the walls.

“The Hollow.”

Caleb raised his gun.

“So we’re not actually in the house anymore?”

Father Elias shook his head.

“We are.”

Then he pointed toward the darkness outside.

“And we aren’t.”

Mara stared.

“That makes no sense.”

Father Elias smiled sadly.

“Welcome to Blackthorn Manor.”

They entered the left door.

The corridor beyond was narrow.

The walls were wet.

Mara touched one.

Her fingers came away covered in something dark.

She smelled it.

Blood.

She immediately wiped her hand on her coat.

“Wonderful.”

Caleb looked at the wall.

“That’s not blood.”

Mara stared.

“Then what is it?”

Caleb looked closer.

“It looks like…”

He paused.

“Oil.”

Father Elias shook his head.

“No.”

He touched the wall.

His fingers became wet.

He smelled them.

“That’s blood.”

Caleb looked at him.

“You said it wasn’t.”

“I was wrong.”

Mara stared at him.

“That’s becoming a habit.”

Father Elias didn’t respond.

They continued walking.

Then…

They heard footsteps.

Behind them.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Mara stopped.

Caleb stopped.

Father Elias stopped.

The footsteps continued.

Mara whispered:

“Who’s there?”

Silence.

Then…

Step.

Step.

Step.

Caleb raised his gun.

“Show yourself.”

A voice answered.

“Mara.”

She froze.

It was Ethan.

“Ethan?”

Father Elias grabbed her.

“Don’t.”

The voice came again.

“Mara, please.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“That’s not him.”

Caleb nodded.

“Keep walking.”

They continued.

The footsteps followed.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Then the voice changed.

“Caleb.”

Caleb stopped.

A man’s voice.

“Caleb, help me.”

His face changed.

Mara looked at him.

“Your partner?”

Caleb nodded.

The voice became desperate.

“Caleb!”

Caleb looked back.

Mara grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.”

Caleb’s eyes filled with tears.

The voice whispered:

“You left me.”

Caleb closed his eyes.

“I know.”

The footsteps stopped.

Then…

The voice screamed:

“YOU LEFT ME TO DIE!”

Caleb fell to his knees.

Mara grabbed him.

“Caleb!”

He was shaking.

Father Elias shouted:

“KEEP MOVING!”

Mara pulled Caleb up.

They ran.

Behind them…

Something began running.

Fast.

BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM!

Mara didn’t look back.

They reached the end of the corridor.

A door.

Father Elias opened it.

They rushed inside.

Caleb slammed it shut.

The footsteps stopped outside.

Silence.

Mara breathed heavily.

“Is it gone?”

Father Elias shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what are we doing?”

“Waiting.”

“Waiting for what?”

Father Elias looked at the door.

“For it to choose someone else.”

The room was circular.

There was a large table in the middle.

On the table…

Were photographs.

Hundreds.

Mara stepped closer.

She recognized them.

The missing people.

Every person who had entered Blackthorn Manor.

Every person who had disappeared.

She picked up a photograph.

A young woman.

The date was written underneath.

1963.

Mara looked at Father Elias.

“She was one of the forty-seven.”

“Yes.”

Mara picked up another.

A little boy.

1971.

Another.

An old man.

1984.

Another.

1997.

Mara stared.

Then…

She saw Ethan.

His photograph was fresh.

Taken only hours ago.

Mara dropped it.

“He’s alive.”

Father Elias nodded.

“Yes.”

Caleb looked at the table.

“Where is he?”

Father Elias pointed.

Mara looked.

Every photograph had a number.

01.

02.

03.

The numbers continued.

Ethan’s photograph was marked:

47.

Mara frowned.

“Forty-seven.”

Father Elias nodded.

“The last one.”

Caleb looked around.

“Last one for what?”

Father Elias didn’t answer.

Mara picked up the photograph again.

On the back…

Something was written.

THE DOOR OPENS WHEN THE FORTY-SEVENTH ARRIVES.

Mara stared.

“What door?”

Father Elias looked at her.

“The door beneath the house.”

Caleb stepped closer.

“And what’s behind it?”

Father Elias whispered:

“The Hollow.”

Suddenly…

The room became cold.

Very cold.

Mara saw her breath.

Caleb raised his gun.

Father Elias began praying.

A dark shadow appeared on the wall.

Mara looked.

It wasn’t their shadow.

It was something else.

Tall.

Thin.

With long arms.

The shadow moved.

Slowly.

Toward them.

Mara stepped backward.

“Father.”

“I see it.”

The shadow reached the table.

It touched the photographs.

One by one…

They disappeared.

POP.

POP.

POP.

Mara screamed:

“Stop!”

The shadow stopped.

Then…

It turned toward her.

Mara froze.

There were no eyes.

No face.

Only darkness.

Father Elias whispered:

“The Whispering Man.”

Mara stared.

“The thing from the farmhouse?”

Father Elias nodded.

“He’s not the Hollow.”

“Then what is he?”

Father Elias looked terrified.

“The Hollow’s servant.”

The shadow moved.

It stepped out of the wall.

A tall figure stood before them.

It wore an old black coat.

Its head was covered by a hood.

Its face was completely empty.

Mara couldn’t breathe.

The figure raised one long finger.

And pointed at her.

Then it whispered:

“You’re next.”

Mara stepped backward.

Caleb fired.

BANG!

The bullet passed through the figure.

It disappeared.

Then reappeared behind Caleb.

Caleb turned.

The Whispering Man leaned toward him.

“Not you.”

He pointed toward Mara.

“Her.”

Mara screamed.

The creature disappeared.

The room became silent.

Father Elias looked at Mara.

“We have to move.”

Mara nodded.

“Now.”

They found another door.

Father Elias opened it.

A staircase descended.

Mara looked down.

“I thought the Hollow was below.”

“It is.”

“How far?”

Father Elias shook his head.

“We don’t know.”

Caleb looked at the darkness.

“Then let’s find out.”

They began descending.

One step.

Two.

Three.

The staircase seemed endless.

Mara counted.

“Twenty.”

Another step.

“Thirty.”

Another.

“Forty.”

Caleb looked at her.

“Why are you counting?”

“So I know how far we’ve gone.”

“Why?”

“So I can panic accurately.”

Caleb almost laughed.

Then stopped.

Mara stared at him.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You almost smiled.”

“I didn’t.”

“You did.”

“I absolutely didn’t.”

Father Elias looked back.

“Please don’t joke.”

Mara frowned.

“Why?”

“Because the house listens.”

They became silent.

Then…

Mara heard something.

A whisper.

Very close.

She turned.

Nothing.

She continued.

Another whisper.

“Mara.”

She froze.

“Did you hear that?”

Caleb shook his head.

“No.”

Mara looked at Father Elias.

He was staring at her.

“You heard it.”

Father Elias nodded.

“What did it say?”

Mara whispered:

“My name.”

Father Elias’s face changed.

“Don’t answer.”

“I know.”

The whisper came again.

“Mara…”

She closed her eyes.

Then…

Another voice.

“Ethan.”

Mara opened her eyes.

Caleb was looking at her.

“Did you hear that?”

Mara nodded.

“It’s using Ethan’s voice.”

The whisper came again.

“Mara…”

She stepped backward.

Father Elias shouted:

“KEEP GOING!”

They ran down the stairs.

The whispers became louder.

“Mara!”

“Caleb!”

“Father!”

“Help me!”

“Don’t leave me!”

The voices filled the staircase.

Then…

A new sound.

A deep rumbling.

The stairs began shaking.

Father Elias shouted:

“RUN!”

They ran.

The staircase suddenly ended.

They fell.

THUD!

Mara landed on a stone floor.

Caleb fell beside her.

Father Elias landed behind them.

Mara slowly stood.

She looked around.

They were underground.

A giant chamber stretched before them.

At the center…

Was a massive black door.

It was at least twenty feet tall.

Chains covered it.

Hundreds of them.

Mara stared.

“That’s it.”

Father Elias nodded.

“The door.”

Caleb looked at the chains.

“What’s behind it?”

Father Elias whispered:

“Nothing.”

Mara frowned.

“Nothing?”

“That’s what makes it dangerous.”

Suddenly…

A sound came from behind the door.

THUMP.

Everyone froze.

Another.

THUMP.

Mara stepped backward.

“What’s that?”

Father Elias shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Another.

THUMP.

The entire chamber shook.

Caleb raised his gun.

“Something is inside.”

Father Elias whispered:

“No.”

Mara looked at him.

“Then what?”

Father Elias’s face became white.

“Something is trying to get out.”

The chains began breaking.

CLINK.

One.

CLINK.

Two.

CLINK.

Three.

Mara shouted:

“Do something!”

Father Elias began praying.

Caleb looked around.

“Where’s the exit?”

Mara pointed behind them.

“The stairs.”

They turned.

The staircase was gone.

The stone wall was completely solid.

Caleb stared.

“We’re trapped.”

The black door shook.

BOOM!

A crack appeared.

Black smoke leaked through.

Mara covered her mouth.

The smoke moved like fingers.

It crawled across the floor.

Toward them.

Father Elias shouted:

“Don’t let it touch you!”

Mara jumped backward.

“Why?”

“Because it will show you your worst memory.”

Caleb froze.

The smoke touched his boot.

Caleb screamed.

Suddenly…

He wasn’t in the chamber anymore.

He was standing on a dark road.

Rain poured from the sky.

A police car was burning.

A man was lying on the ground.

Caleb’s partner.

James.

Caleb stared.

“No.”

James looked at him.

“You left me.”

Caleb stepped backward.

“I tried.”

“You ran.”

“I was trying to get help.”

“You ran.”

Caleb fell to his knees.

James stood.

His face was burned.

“You heard me calling.”

Caleb covered his ears.

“Stop.”

“You heard me.”

“STOP!”

“You left me.”

Caleb screamed.

“STOP!”

The vision disappeared.

Caleb fell onto the stone floor.

Mara grabbed him.

“Caleb!”

He was crying.

“He’s dead.”

Mara held his shoulders.

“I know.”

“He was calling me.”

“I know.”

“I left him.”

Mara shook her head.

“You survived.”

Caleb looked at her.

Mara continued:

“That’s not the same thing.”

The smoke moved away from him.

Then…

It came toward Mara.

Mara stepped backward.

“No.”

The smoke touched her foot.

Everything disappeared.

She was standing in a room.

A hospital.

Her mother was lying in a bed.

Mara was younger.

She was holding her mother’s hand.

“Don’t go.”

Her mother smiled.

“I have to.”

“Why?”

“Because everyone does.”

Mara cried.

“Don’t leave me.”

Her mother closed her eyes.

Mara screamed.

“No!”

The vision changed.

Now Mara was older.

She was standing outside a hospital.

A doctor was speaking to her.

“We’re sorry.”

Mara shook her head.

“No.”

The doctor continued.

“She didn’t suffer.”

Mara screamed:

“NO!”

The memory disappeared.

Mara fell to the floor.

She was crying.

Caleb grabbed her.

“Mara.”

She looked at him.

“I wasn’t there.”

“For what?”

“When she died.”

Mara covered her face.

“I wasn’t there.”

Caleb shook his head.

“That wasn’t your fault.”

The smoke moved away.

Father Elias stepped forward.

Mara looked at him.

“What about you?”

Father Elias stared at the black door.

The smoke moved toward him.

He didn’t move.

The smoke touched him.

Father Elias closed his eyes.

His worst memory appeared.

A church.

Fire.

People screaming.

A young Father Elias stood in the middle.

A little boy was trapped inside.

The boy screamed:

“Father!”

Elias ran toward him.

But the door collapsed.

The boy disappeared.

Elias fell to his knees.

“No.”

The memory ended.

Father Elias opened his eyes.

Tears ran down his face.

Mara stared.

“Who was he?”

Father Elias whispered:

“My son.”

Silence.

Mara stepped closer.

“You had a son?”

“Once.”

“What happened?”

“He died.”

“Because of the Hollow?”

Father Elias shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward the black door.

“Because of me.”

The black door suddenly exploded.

BOOOOOOM!

Everyone was thrown backward.

The chains shattered.

Black smoke filled the chamber.

Mara couldn’t breathe.

Caleb shouted:

“FATHER!”

Father Elias was gone.

Mara looked around.

“Father!”

No answer.

A deep voice came from the smoke.

“FORTY-SEVEN.”

Mara froze.

“Who are you?”

The voice answered:

“THE LAST DOOR.”

Caleb raised his gun.

“Show yourself!”

The voice laughed.

“YOU CANNOT KILL WHAT HAS NO BODY.”

Mara shouted:

“Where is Ethan?”

Silence.

Then…

A figure stepped from the smoke.

Ethan.

His face was pale.

His eyes were black.

Mara stared.

“Ethan?”

He smiled.

“Hello, Mara.”

Caleb raised his gun.

Mara stopped him.

“Wait.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“I told you to come back.”

Mara’s voice shook.

“Why?”

Ethan smiled.

“Because I need your help.”

“With what?”

Ethan pointed behind him.

The black door was open.

Beyond it…

Was complete darkness.

And inside that darkness…

Something was breathing.

Hhhhhhaaaaaaahhhhhh…

Ethan whispered:

“The Hollow is hungry.”

Mara stepped backward.

“What does it want?”

Ethan smiled.

“You.”

Mara froze.

Caleb grabbed her.

“Run!”

They turned.

But the chamber had changed.

The staircase was gone.

The walls were gone.

The ceiling was gone.

They were standing in an endless black space.

Ethan disappeared.

Father Elias was gone.

Only Mara and Caleb remained.

Then…

A light appeared.

A single door.

Mara stepped toward it.

Caleb grabbed her.

“Don’t.”

Mara stared.

“We have nowhere else to go.”

The door slowly opened.

Inside…

Was a room.

Mara recognized it immediately.

Her own childhood bedroom.

She froze.

“No.”

Caleb looked at her.

“What?”

Mara whispered:

“That’s my house.”

A little girl was sitting on the bed.

Mara stared.

It was her.

Eight years old.

The child looked up.

Then smiled.

She pointed toward the closet.

Mara’s blood ran cold.

The closet door slowly opened.

Something was standing inside.

A tall shadow.

Mara whispered:

“I remember this.”

Caleb stared.

“What?”

“When I was a child…”

Mara stepped backward.

“…I saw something in my closet.”

The shadow moved.

Mara remembered.

Her mother had told her:

“There’s nothing there.”

But there had been.

Something.

Waiting.

Watching.

Breathing.

Mara suddenly understood.

She looked at Father Elias’s missing book in her mind.

The names.

The dates.

The photographs.

Her own name.

Written seventy years ago.

Mara whispered:

“I’ve been here before.”

Caleb stared.

“What?”

Mara looked at him.

“Blackthorn Manor.”

The child version of Mara smiled.

Then whispered:

“Welcome home.”

The door slammed shut.

The darkness vanished.

Mara and Caleb were suddenly back in the underground chamber.

But everything had changed.

The black door was gone.

The chains were gone.

The smoke was gone.

And Father Elias stood before them.

He was holding something.

A small golden key.

Mara stared.

“Where did you get that?”

Father Elias looked at her.

“From Ethan.”

“Where is Ethan?”

Father Elias shook his head.

“He’s gone.”

“Where?”

Father Elias looked toward the ceiling.

“Up.”

Mara frowned.

“Up?”

Father Elias nodded.

“The house is changing again.”

Caleb looked around.

The chamber began shaking.

Father Elias handed Mara the key.

“Take this.”

Mara stared at it.

“What does it open?”

Father Elias whispered:

“The room where the Hollow was born.”

Mara looked at the key.

“Where is that?”

Father Elias pointed upward.

“At the top of the house.”

Mara’s face went pale.

“The house has six floors now.”

Father Elias shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward the darkness above.

“It has seven.”

A deep roar echoed through the earth.

The floor cracked.

Mara grabbed Caleb.

Father Elias shouted:

“RUN!”

They raced toward a staircase that had suddenly appeared.

They climbed.

One floor.

Two.

Three.

The house shook.

Four.

Five.

Six.

The stairs continued.

Seven.

Mara looked up.

At the top…

A door waited.

The door was covered in blood.

And written across it…

Were three words:

MARA REMEMBERS EVERYTHING.

Mara stopped.

Caleb looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Mara stared at the door.

“I don’t know.”

Then…

A voice came from behind it.

Her own voice.

“Mara.”

She stepped closer.

The voice whispered:

“Do you remember what happened here?”

Mara’s hand tightened around the golden key.

The door slowly opened.

A cold wind rushed past them.

Inside…

Was a room filled with hundreds of mirrors.

Every mirror showed Mara.

But each reflection was different.

One was a child.

One was old.

One was covered in blood.

One was smiling.

One was crying.

And in the center…

One reflection was standing completely still.

It wasn’t copying Mara.

It was watching her.

Mara stared.

The reflection smiled.

Then raised its hand.

And pointed behind Mara.

Mara slowly turned.

Caleb was gone.

Father Elias was gone.

The hallway was empty.

Mara turned back toward the mirror.

Her reflection was no longer there.

A whisper came from behind her.

“Now…”

Mara froze.

“…we can finally talk.”

She turned.

A tall woman stood in the darkness.

Her face was hidden beneath long black hair.

Mara stared.

“Who are you?”

The woman slowly lifted her head.

Mara screamed.

The woman had Mara’s face.

Exactly.

The same eyes.

The same scars.

The same expression.

The woman smiled.

“I am the first person who entered Blackthorn Manor.”

Mara stepped backward.

“Who?”

The woman whispered:

“Edmund Blackthorn’s daughter.”

Mara stared.

The woman leaned closer.

“And I have been waiting for you.”

Mara looked at the golden key.

“Why?”

The woman smiled.

“Because the Hollow didn’t choose you.”

Mara’s blood ran cold.

“It chose your mother.”

Mara froze.

The woman continued:

“But she escaped.”

Mara whispered:

“How?”

The woman pointed toward the darkness.

“She gave it a replacement.”

Mara’s heart stopped.

“Who?”

The woman smiled.

“Your mother gave the Hollow…”

She pointed at Mara.

“…you.”

The room went silent.

Mara couldn’t breathe.

Then…

Every mirror shattered at once.

CRAAAAASH!

And from beneath the house…

The Hollow screamed.
