The Thing Living Under the Roots
THE FOREST THAT NEVER LETS YOU LEAVE · August 11, 2026
The ground split beneath them.
Lena stumbled backward as enormous roots burst from the earth.
Maya grabbed her arm.
“Move!”
They ran.
Behind them, the black tree groaned.
Not like wood.
Like something alive.
Something waking from a very long sleep.
Ryan looked over his shoulder.
The faces trapped inside the tree were moving.
Hundreds of mouths opened at once.
They screamed without making a sound.
Evelyn shouted,
“Don’t listen to them!”
Lena covered her ears.
“What are they saying?”
“They’re calling your names.”
Lena froze.
She could hear it now.
Whispers.
Thousands of whispers.
Lena…
Lena…
Lena…
Then another voice joined them.
Maya…
Maya began crying.
Ryan shouted,
“Keep moving!”
They reached the stone doorway.
But it had disappeared.
There was only a solid wall.
Ryan slammed his hands against it.
“It’s gone!”
Evelyn looked behind them.
The black tree was moving.
Its roots crawled across the floor like giant snakes.
“Then we go deeper.”
Ryan stared at her.
“Deeper?”
“The exit is beneath the tree.”
“You’re insane.”
“Probably.”
She grabbed his arm.
“But I’m still alive.”
They ran through the underground forest.
There was no natural light.
The only illumination came from strange blue mushrooms growing from the roots.
Their light made everything look dead.
Lena noticed something moving beside her.
She turned.
A human face was growing from a tree trunk.
An old man.
His eyes were closed.
His mouth moved.
“Please…”
Lena stopped.
The man opened his eyes.
“Don’t let it remember you.”
“What?”
The face disappeared.
Maya pulled Lena forward.
“Don’t stop.”
They continued.
Then they heard footsteps.
Behind them.
One.
Two.
Three.
Ryan looked back.
Nothing.
The footsteps continued.
Closer.
Lena whispered,
“Who’s following us?”
Evelyn answered without turning.
“Something that doesn’t want us to leave.”
They reached a huge underground cavern.
A black river flowed through it.
On the other side stood a stone platform.
And on that platform was Ethan.
He was kneeling.
His body was covered with thin black roots.
“Ethan!”
Lena ran toward him.
Evelyn grabbed her.
“Wait.”
Ethan lifted his head.
His eyes were normal.
“Lena…”
She began crying.
“It’s really you.”
Ethan nodded.
“Don’t come closer.”
“Why?”
“The roots are inside me.”
Maya stepped forward.
“Can we remove them?”
Ethan shook his head.
“They’re connected to my heart.”
Ryan looked at Evelyn.
“How long?”
Evelyn stared at Ethan.
“Until midnight.”
Lena looked confused.
“What happens at midnight?”
Ethan answered.
“I stop being Ethan.”
A deep roar shook the cavern.
The black river began moving backward.
The blue mushrooms went dark.
Then something rose from the water.
At first, it looked like a tree.
Then it stood.
It was enormous.
Its body was made from roots, bones, and black bark.
Its head had no face.
Instead, hundreds of tiny mouths covered its chest.
Each mouth whispered a different name.
The creature looked toward Ethan.
Then toward Lena.
Evelyn whispered:
“The Root Keeper.”
Ryan raised his broken knife.
“How do we kill it?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You don’t.”
“Then what do we do?”
“You give it what it wants.”
Lena stared at her.
“What does it want?”
Evelyn looked at the creature.
“A guardian.”
The Root Keeper moved.
The cavern shook with every step.
Ethan’s roots tightened.
He screamed.
Lena ran toward him.
The creature raised one arm.
Ryan stepped in front of Lena.
The arm struck him.
He flew across the cavern and crashed against a tree.
“RYAN!”
He didn’t move.
Maya grabbed Lena.
“He’s alive.”
Ethan shouted,
“GET OUT!”
Lena shook her head.
“I’m not leaving you!”
“You have to!”
“No!”
Ethan’s voice broke.
“Lena, listen to me!”
She stopped.
He looked at her.
“I knew you before this forest.”
Lena stared.
“What?”
Ethan smiled weakly.
“Not here.”
He reached into his pocket.
A small silver pendant hung from his hand.
The same pendant the boy had been wearing.
Lena’s eyes widened.
“Where did you get that?”
Ethan looked at it.
“I found it in my backpack.”
Maya stepped closer.
“The boy said you gave it to him.”
Ethan shook his head.
“I’ve never seen him.”
Evelyn suddenly understood.
“The forest is changing time.”
Lena looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn pointed at Ethan.
“The pendant belongs to Ethan.”
“But the boy had it.”
“Exactly.”
Ethan stared at the pendant.
Then the truth hit him.
“The boy…”
He looked terrified.
“…is me.”
Nobody spoke.
The Root Keeper stopped moving.
Even it seemed to be watching.
Lena whispered,
“How?”
Ethan shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“The forest doesn’t just trap people.”
She looked at Ethan.
“It changes them.”
Maya understood.
“The boy is Ethan’s future.”
Evelyn nodded.
“If Ethan becomes the guardian…”
She looked toward the creature.
“…he becomes the boy.”
Lena stared at Ethan.
“Then we have to stop it.”
Ethan smiled sadly.
“You can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because the forest already chose me.”
The roots tightened.
Ethan screamed.
His eyes turned black.
For one terrifying second, Lena saw the little boy standing where Ethan had been.
Then his eyes returned to normal.
He whispered,
“There’s only one way.”
“What?”
“Someone has to take my place.”
Lena shook her head.
“No.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“If someone replaces me, the forest releases the others.”
“Then I’ll do it.”
Ethan stared at her.
“No.”
“I’ll take your place.”
“No!”
Lena stepped forward.
“I’ll do it.”
Ethan fought against the roots.
“Don’t!”
Maya grabbed Lena.
“Think!”
“I am thinking.”
“No, you’re sacrificing yourself.”
Lena looked at Ethan.
“He’s already sacrificing himself.”
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t know what you’re offering.”
“I know enough.”
“You’ll never leave.”
Lena smiled sadly.
“Then neither will you.”
Ethan stared at her.
The Root Keeper slowly moved closer.
The mouths on its chest whispered:
Choose.
Evelyn shouted,
“There’s another way!”
Everyone turned.
“What?”
“The first tree.”
Ryan slowly stood up.
He was bleeding from his forehead.
“What first tree?”
Evelyn pointed toward the cavern.
“The tree that created the forest.”
Maya frowned.
“Where?”
“At the center.”
Ryan looked around.
“We’re at the center.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed downward.
“Below us.”
Evelyn found a narrow opening beneath the black river.
They crawled through one by one.
The tunnel was barely large enough to fit.
Behind them, the Root Keeper followed.
The walls were covered in names.
Thousands of them.
Some were centuries old.
Some were fresh.
Then Lena saw something.
A name carved into the stone.
ELIAS BLACKWOOD.
She stopped.
Maya looked at her.
“Who is Elias?”
Lena shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Evelyn stared at the name.
Her face changed.
“You shouldn’t have seen that.”
“Why?”
“Because that’s my son’s name.”
Silence.
Lena looked at her.
“You said you were here for forty-two years.”
Evelyn nodded.
“My son entered the forest with me.”
“Where is he?”
Evelyn looked ahead.
“He’s the thing chasing us.”
A roar echoed through the tunnel.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“He’s been waiting for me.”
They reached the bottom.
A huge chamber opened before them.
In the center was a small tree.
It looked ordinary.
Thin trunk.
Small branches.
No leaves.
But around it were thousands of bones.
Human bones.
Animal bones.
Old bones.
Fresh bones.
Maya whispered,
“This is where it started.”
Evelyn nodded.
“The first tree.”
Ryan looked at it.
“How do we destroy it?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“We don’t.”
“Again?”
“We burn it.”
Ryan stared.
“Isn’t that the same thing?”
“No.”
Evelyn pointed at the roots.
“The forest feeds on fear.”
Lena looked at the tree.
“Then what does it fear?”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“Being forgotten.”
She took a match from her pocket.
Ryan stared.
“You’ve had that this whole time?”
“Forty-two years.”
She struck it.
The flame appeared.
The Root Keeper entered the chamber.
Evelyn looked at the creature.
“My son.”
The creature stopped.
For a moment, its body became still.
Then a human face appeared among the roots.
A young man’s face.
Elias.
His eyes were filled with tears.
“Mother…”
Evelyn walked toward him.
“I remember you.”
The creature trembled.
“I never forgot.”
She touched his face.
“I’m sorry.”
The Root Keeper screamed.
The chamber shook.
Evelyn turned toward the first tree.
She threw the burning match onto its roots.
The tree caught fire.
Immediately, the entire underground forest screamed.
The Root Keeper collapsed.
The roots around Ethan loosened.
Ethan fell.
Lena caught him.
“Maya!”
Maya helped pull him away.
The fire spread.
Everywhere.
Trees burned.
Names disappeared.
The black river turned red.
And above them, the entire forest began collapsing.
Ryan shouted,
“We have to get out!”
Evelyn looked at the burning tree.
She smiled.
“Go.”
Lena shook her head.
“No!”
“Go!”
“Evelyn!”
She looked at her.
“Someone has to make sure it stays dead.”
The ceiling began falling.
Maya grabbed Lena.
“We have to go!”
Lena looked back.
Evelyn stood alone beside the burning tree.
Behind her stood the fading shape of Elias.
Mother and son.
Together again.
Then the chamber collapsed.
Lena screamed.
“EVELYN!”
The tunnel filled with darkness.
Ethan grabbed her hand.
“Run!”
They ran.
Behind them came one final sound.
A scream.
Then silence.
They reached the surface just before sunrise.
The forest was burning behind them.
But strangely…
the flames produced no smoke.
Ethan collapsed on the grass.
Lena knelt beside him.
“Are you okay?”
He opened his eyes.
“I think so.”
Maya looked around.
Ryan checked the road.
“We made it.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Ethan laughed.
“We’re alive.”
Ryan smiled.
“Don’t celebrate yet.”
“Why?”
Ryan pointed toward the forest.
The fire had stopped.
The trees were still.
Completely still.
Then a small boy stepped out from between them.
Gray shirt.
Bare feet.
Black eyes.
Ethan froze.
The boy smiled.
He raised the silver pendant.
Then he whispered:
“You forgot one thing.”
Lena stared.
“What?”
The boy pointed toward the burning forest.
“The forest wasn’t the monster.”
His smile widened.
“The monster was underneath it.”
The ground began to shake again.
