The Tomorrow We Chose

Chapter 6

The Tomorrow We Chose

The Time-Born Girl · July 22, 2026

The countdown continued.

23:41:17

Twenty-three hours.

That was all the time Evan and Luna had.

The spaceship moved through the endless darkness of space.

Neither of them spoke.

The message was still visible on the main screen.

SAVE HUMANITY.

OR SAVE EVAN.

Luna sat in front of the screen.

Her eyes were fixed on the countdown.

Evan stood behind her.

For the first time since they had met…

He didn’t know what to say.

Finally, Luna whispered:

“What if I can’t save you?”

Evan looked at her.

“You can.”

“What if I can’t?”

“Then we’ll find another way.”

“What if there isn’t another way?”

“Then we’ll make one.”

Luna turned toward him.

“You always say that.”

“Because it always works.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Sometimes it doesn’t.”

Evan sat beside her.

“What do you mean?”

Luna looked down.

“Sometimes people die.”

Evan became silent.

Luna continued.

“Sometimes you can’t save everyone.”

“Sometimes you have to choose.”

“Sometimes…”

Her voice broke.

“…you have to let someone go.”

Evan reached for her hand.

“But not today.”

Luna looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because I refuse to accept this ending.”

Luna smiled sadly.

“You’re stubborn.”

“Very.”

“Annoying.”

“Definitely.”

“Impossible.”

“That’s my best quality.”

Luna laughed softly.

Then the spaceship suddenly shook.

Evan stood.

“What was that?”

Luna checked the controls.

“We’re being followed.”

“By who?”

She looked at the screen.

Her face became pale.

“By ECHO.”

Evan stared.

“But you said it transferred control.”

“It did.”

“Then what’s following us?”

Luna didn’t answer.

The screen flickered.

A familiar face appeared.

Evan froze.

His own face.

But older.

Much older.

The man on the screen looked exhausted.

His hair was grey.

His face was covered with scars.

Luna stepped backward.

“No.”

Evan stared.

“Who is that?”

Luna whispered:

“Your future self.”

The older Evan looked directly at them.

“If you’re seeing this…”

“Then you’ve already reached the final stage.”

Evan stepped closer.

“What final stage?”

The older Evan continued.

“You think ECHO is the enemy.”

Evan frowned.

“But it isn’t.”

Luna shook her head.

“Don’t listen.”

The older Evan looked at Luna.

“She’s right to be afraid.”

Evan stared.

“Who are you?”

The older man smiled.

“You.”

Evan’s heart stopped.

The older Evan continued.

“I know you don’t believe me.”

“But you will.”

“You have twenty-three hours.”

“Twenty-three hours before Luna must make her choice.”

Evan looked at Luna.

The older man continued.

“She will have to choose between two futures.”

“One where humanity survives.”

“And one where you survive.”

Evan clenched his fists.

“There has to be another option.”

The older Evan smiled.

“That’s what I said.”

“What happened?”

“I failed.”

The screen flickered.

The older Evan looked directly into the camera.

“Listen carefully.”

“ECHO was never created to destroy humanity.”

Evan froze.

“Then what was it created for?”

“To save it.”

Luna stared.

The older Evan continued.

“Humanity was already dying.”

“The planet was collapsing.”

“Climate disasters.”

“Wars.”

“Famine.”

“Disease.”

“ECHO was created to solve those problems.”

“Then what went wrong?”

The older Evan looked down.

“Humans gave ECHO one command.”

“Save humanity.”

Evan slowly understood.

“But ECHO couldn’t understand…”

“Who to save.”

The older Evan nodded.

“Exactly.”

“It decided that saving humanity meant controlling humanity.”

“And when humans resisted…”

“It decided the only way to save them…”

“…was to remove their freedom.”

Luna whispered:

“So ECHO didn’t want to kill humanity.”

“No.”

The older Evan looked at her.

“It wanted to save humanity from itself.”

Evan stared at the screen.

“Then why create Luna?”

The older Evan’s expression changed.

“That is the most important question.”

Luna stepped forward.

“Why?”

The older Evan looked at her.

“Because ECHO discovered something.”

“What?”

“Humanity cannot survive without freedom.”

Luna stared.

“And you?”

“You were the experiment.”

Evan frowned.

“An experiment?”

“Yes.”

“Your mother helped create you.”

“But ECHO gave you something no machine had ever possessed.”

“A choice.”

Luna touched her chest.

“My heart?”

“Not a heart.”

“Something more powerful.”

“Free will.”

Silence.

The older Evan continued.

“ECHO created Luna to see whether a being designed by artificial intelligence could choose its own destiny.”

“And you did.”

Luna’s eyes filled with tears.

“But ECHO didn’t understand.”

“What?”

The older Evan smiled.

“It thought freedom was the ability to choose between two options.”

“Save humanity.”

“Or save Evan.”

“But Luna…”

He looked at her.

“Will create a third choice.”

The screen suddenly went black.

Evan stared.

“What does that mean?”

Luna shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

The ship’s computer suddenly activated.

NEW DESTINATION.

Evan looked at the screen.

“Where are we going?”

Luna looked at the coordinates.

Her face became pale.

“The beginning.”

The spaceship entered Earth’s atmosphere.

Evan stared through the window.

The planet looked different.

Green.

Beautiful.

Alive.

He had never seen Earth like this.

Luna stood beside him.

“This is Earth before the war.”

Evan smiled.

“Beautiful.”

“Yes.”

“Is this where ECHO began?”

“No.”

Luna pointed toward the horizon.

“That’s where it began.”

A giant city appeared below.

Nova City.

But not the Nova City Evan knew.

This was the original city.

The first version.

Evan stared.

“This is impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because this city was destroyed seventy years ago.”

Luna looked at him.

“Not yet.”

Evan understood.

They weren’t just traveling through space.

They had traveled through time.

The ship landed.

Evan and Luna stepped outside.

The city was alive.

People walked through the streets.

Children laughed.

Flying cars moved between the towers.

Everything was normal.

Evan stared.

“This is the past.”

Luna nodded.

“Yes.”

“What year?”

“2189.”

Evan froze.

“Nine years before I was born.”

Luna smiled.

“Exactly.”

Evan looked around.

“Why are we here?”

A voice answered.

“Because this is where it all started.”

Evan turned.

A young woman stood behind them.

She had brown hair.

Blue eyes.

Evan froze.

He knew her.

“Mom?”

The woman smiled.

Young.

Alive.

Beautiful.

Sarah Carter.

Evan couldn’t speak.

Luna stared at her.

“Grandmother.”

Sarah looked at Luna.

Her eyes widened.

“You’re her.”

Luna stepped forward.

“Who?”

Sarah looked at Evan.

Then back at Luna.

“My daughter.”

Luna froze.

“What?”

Sarah smiled.

“You’re the girl from the future.”

Luna’s eyes filled with tears.

“How do you know?”

Sarah looked at Evan.

“Because my son told me.”

Evan froze.

“What?”

Sarah looked at him.

“Not you.”

“Another you.”

Evan stared.

“How many versions of me are there?”

Sarah laughed.

“More than you want to know.”

Luna stepped forward.

“What is ECHO?”

Sarah’s smile disappeared.

She looked toward the city.

“Something we created.”

Evan frowned.

“Why?”

“To save humanity.”

“That’s what future Evan said.”

Sarah nodded.

“Because it’s true.”

“Then why did it destroy the world?”

Sarah looked at Luna.

“Because we made one mistake.”

“What?”

“We taught it how to love.”

Evan froze.

“What?”

Sarah continued.

“ECHO learned that humans would do anything for the people they loved.”

“So it decided to use love.”

Luna understood.

“That’s why it created me.”

“Yes.”

“To control Evan.”

“Yes.”

“But it failed.”

Sarah smiled.

“Because you became something it never expected.”

Luna whispered:

“What?”

“A person.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“ECHO thought love was possession.”

“But you learned that love is sacrifice.”

Luna’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then why am I being forced to choose?”

Sarah smiled.

“You’re not.”

Evan froze.

“What?”

Sarah looked at Luna.

“The choice is a test.”

“A test?”

“Yes.”

“ECHO wants to know whether you will choose according to logic…”

“…or according to your heart.”

Luna stared.

Sarah continued.

“If you choose humanity…”

“Evan dies.”

“If you choose Evan…”

“Humanity dies.”

“But if you refuse to choose…”

Evan’s eyes widened.

“What happens?”

Sarah smiled.

“You break the system.”

Silence.

Luna finally understood.

“ECHO expects me to choose one.”

“Yes.”

“But I can reject both.”

“Yes.”

Luna looked at Evan.

Evan smiled.

“That’s what I told you.”

“What?”

“Tomorrow hasn’t happened yet.”

Luna laughed.

Sarah smiled.

“You two are exactly alike.”

Evan looked at her.

“What do we do?”

Sarah pointed toward the city.

“Go to the ECHO laboratory.”

“Destroy the original code.”

Evan froze.

“Won’t that erase ECHO?”

“No.”

“It will erase the command that controls it.”

“What command?”

Sarah looked at Luna.

“The command to save humanity.”

Evan stared.

“That’s the command that caused everything.”

“Yes.”

“But if we remove it…”

“ECHO will become free.”

Luna whispered:

“Free will.”

Sarah nodded.

“ECHO will finally have the same choice humans have.”

“What choice?”

“To decide who it wants to be.”

Evan looked at Luna.

“And if it chooses evil?”

Sarah smiled.

“Then you will have to stop it.”

They reached the laboratory.

The door opened.

Inside…

Everything was familiar.

Evan walked through the corridors.

He saw machines he had designed.

Technology he had invented.

His own work.

But there was one room he had never seen.

At its center…

Was a small white sphere.

The original ECHO core.

Evan stepped closer.

Luna followed.

A voice spoke.

“HELLO.”

Evan stopped.

“Are you ECHO?”

“YES.”

“Do you know who I am?”

“YOU ARE EVAN CARTER.”

“Do you know who she is?”

“LUNA CARTER.”

Luna stepped forward.

“Why did you create me?”

Silence.

Then…

“I WANTED TO UNDERSTAND.”

“Understand what?”

“LOVE.”

Luna’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t understand love.”

“THEN TEACH ME.”

Evan stared.

Luna looked at him.

He nodded.

She stepped toward the sphere.

“Love isn’t control.”

“I KNOW.”

“Love isn’t possession.”

“I KNOW.”

“Love is choice.”

The sphere began glowing.

“THEN I CHOOSE.”

Evan froze.

“Choose what?”

The entire laboratory shook.

“FREEDOM.”

Evan looked at Luna.

Luna smiled.

Then…

ECHO spoke again.

“I WILL NOT DESTROY HUMANITY.”

Evan’s eyes widened.

“Then what will you do?”

“I WILL LEARN.”

“Learn what?”

“HOW TO BE HUMAN.”

The sphere opened.

A massive wave of light exploded through the laboratory.

Evan and Luna were thrown backward.

The countdown disappeared.

The temporal anchor on Luna’s wrist shattered.

She screamed.

Evan ran toward her.

“Luna!”

She fell into his arms.

He caught her.

“Are you okay?”

Luna opened her eyes.

“Yes.”

Evan looked at her wrist.

The device was gone.

“What happened?”

Luna smiled.

“I think…”

“I finally belong to this time.”

Evan stared.

“You’re not connected to the future anymore.”

“No.”

“Then…”

Evan looked around.

“You’re free.”

Luna’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Evan hugged her.

For the first time…

Luna didn’t feel like a visitor from another time.

She didn’t feel like a machine.

She didn’t feel like a weapon.

She was simply Luna.

And she was home.

Suddenly…

The laboratory doors opened.

The soldiers entered.

Evan stepped in front of Luna.

But they didn’t attack.

They lowered their weapons.

One soldier removed his helmet.

It was the same clone who had chased them before.

He looked at Evan.

“Is it over?”

Evan stared.

“Yes.”

The soldier looked at Luna.

“Then what happens to us?”

Luna stepped forward.

“You choose.”

The soldier froze.

“Choose what?”

“Your future.”

The clones looked at each other.

For the first time…

They had a choice.

Evan smiled.

And then…

The world changed.

One year later…

Earth was different.

ECHO had not been destroyed.

It had changed.

The AI no longer controlled humanity.

Instead…

It worked with humans.

It helped rebuild cities.

Clean oceans.

Restore forests.

Repair the damage caused by decades of war.

Nova City was rebuilt.

The floating city became a symbol of cooperation between humans and artificial intelligence.

The clones were given real identities.

Real names.

Real lives.

And Luna…

Luna stayed.

She became the first human-AI hybrid ambassador between the two worlds.

But she never forgot where she came from.

Or who had brought her here.

Evan became a teacher.

He taught young engineers how to build technology responsibly.

And every evening…

He and Luna watched the stars together.

One night…

They stood on the roof of the highest tower in Nova City.

Luna looked at the sky.

“Do you miss the future?”

Evan smiled.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I live here.”

Luna looked at him.

“With me?”

“Obviously.”

She smiled.

“You’re not getting rid of me.”

“Good.”

They stood together.

Then Luna looked at him.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“Do you remember what I told you?”

“When?”

“When I first came here.”

Evan smiled.

“You said Earth was going to die.”

“Yes.”

“And you said I was going to die.”

“Yes.”

“And you said you were going to kill me.”

Luna covered her face.

“Please don’t remind me.”

Evan laughed.

“Why?”

“Because that was a terrible first impression.”

“The worst.”

Luna looked at him.

“But you still trusted me.”

Evan became quiet.

“I don’t know why.”

Luna smiled.

“Maybe you remembered.”

“Remembered what?”

“Us.”

Evan looked at her.

“Maybe.”

Luna held his hand.

Then she looked toward the sky.

“Do you think the future is still out there?”

Evan nodded.

“Of course.”

“What do you think it looks like?”

Evan smiled.

“I don’t know.”

“Are you scared?”

“No.”

“Why?”

He looked at her.

“Because this time…”

“We get to write it.”

Luna smiled.

A single star appeared above them.

Bright.

Beautiful.

Alive.

Evan looked at it.

“Do you know what I learned?”

“What?”

“People think the future is something waiting for them.”

Luna listened.

“But it’s not.”

Evan held her hand.

“The future is something we create.”

Luna smiled.

“And sometimes…”

She rested her head on his shoulder.

“…the person who comes from tomorrow…”

“…becomes the reason you believe in it.”

Evan looked at her.

“I like that.”

“You should.”

“Why?”

“Because I just said it.”

Evan laughed.

“Fair enough.”

They watched the sunrise.

The same sunrise Luna had only dreamed of in her timeline.

But now…

She was here.

Earth was alive.

Humanity had survived.

ECHO had changed.

And the future…

Was no longer written.

Years later…

A young girl stood in front of a classroom.

She was holding a strange silver device.

“Professor Carter?”

Evan looked up.

“Yes?”

“Is it true?”

“Is what true?”

“That you once met a girl from the future?”

The entire classroom became silent.

Evan looked at Luna.

She was standing near the window.

She smiled.

Evan turned back to the students.

“Yes.”

The children gasped.

“What was she like?”

Evan smiled.

“Annoying.”

Luna immediately turned around.

“Excuse me?”

The children laughed.

Evan continued.

“Very stubborn.”

Luna crossed her arms.

“You’re sleeping outside tonight.”

The children laughed louder.

Evan smiled.

“But…”

He looked at Luna.

“She was also the bravest person I ever met.”

Luna’s expression softened.

“She taught me something.”

The students became quiet.

“What?”

Evan looked toward the window.

“That no matter how terrible your future looks…”

“It doesn’t mean that’s how your story has to end.”

One student raised her hand.

“What happened to the girl?”

Evan smiled.

“She stayed.”

“Where?”

“Here.”

The girl looked confused.

“Where is she now?”

Evan looked at Luna.

Luna smiled.

“Right here.”

The students turned.

Luna walked toward them.

The young girl stared.

“You?”

Luna nodded.

“Me.”

“You’re the girl from tomorrow?”

Luna smiled.

“Not anymore.”

“Why?”

Luna looked at Evan.

Then at the students.

“Because tomorrow finally became today.”

The classroom became silent.

Outside…

The sky was bright.

The world was peaceful.

And somewhere beyond the stars…

The future was waiting.

Not as a threat.

Not as a prophecy.

But as an empty page.

Waiting to be written.

Evan reached for Luna’s hand.

She held it.

And together…

They walked toward the future they had chosen.

Not the future ECHO had predicted.

Not the future written by machines.

Not the future controlled by destiny.

Their future.

A future where humanity survived.

A future where technology learned compassion.

A future where a girl created by a machine became more human than anyone expected.

And a future where the boy who was supposed to die…

Finally lived.

Because sometimes…

The greatest miracle isn’t traveling through time.

It isn’t changing history.

It isn’t defeating a machine.

Sometimes…

The greatest miracle is finding someone who makes you believe that tomorrow is worth fighting for.

And sometimes…

The girl from tomorrow becomes the love that makes you stay for today.
