The Town Beneath the Town
THE LAST TRAIN TO MIDNIGHT · August 18, 2026
Nora stood frozen.
Her father was alive.
Her brother was alive.
Her mother was standing beside her.
And yet none of them felt real anymore.
The man who looked like her father smiled.
“Nora.”
She couldn’t move.
Her mother pulled her backward.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Her father laughed softly.
“She deserves the truth.”
Nora looked between them.
“Then tell me.”
The room became silent.
“What happened seven years ago?”
Her father looked at her.
“Daniel discovered the town.”
“What town?”
“The one beneath Hollow Creek.”
Nora frowned.
“We’re already in Hollow Creek.”
Her father shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed toward the floor.
“This is only the first layer.”
Nora stared at him.
“First layer?”
“There’s another town beneath this one.”
Her mother whispered,
“And another beneath that.”
Nora felt sick.
“How many?”
Her father smiled.
“Nobody knows.”
A deep vibration passed through the chamber.
The walls moved.
The floor opened.
A staircase appeared beneath them.
Her father stepped toward it.
“Come.”
Nora didn’t move.
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
His answer shocked her.
Her father smiled.
“Trust nobody here.”
Then he disappeared down the stairs.
Nora looked at her mother.
“Is that really him?”
Her mother shook her head.
“No.”
“Then where is Dad?”
“Somewhere below.”
Nora looked at Daniel.
He was still standing near the red door.
His black eyes stared at her.
“Nor…”
She backed away.
“You aren’t Daniel.”
He smiled.
“No.”
The creature’s face began changing.
Its features shifted.
Daniel.
Her mother.
Her father.
Then Nora.
Finally, it became a blank face.
“We are what you remember.”
“What do you want?”
“To remember you.”
Nora grabbed her mother’s hand.
They ran down the stairs.
The staircase seemed to continue forever.
They passed doors.
Hundreds of them.
Each door had a date.
1994
2001
2007
2019
2026
Nora stopped at the last one.
2026
She opened it.
A small town appeared beyond it.
But this wasn’t the Hollow Creek she had just seen.
It was beautiful.
Bright streets.
Fresh flowers.
Children playing.
Cars moving.
People laughing.
Nora stepped forward.
“This looks normal.”
Her mother grabbed her arm.
“Don’t.”
A little girl ran past them.
Nora recognized her.
“Lily.”
The girl stopped.
She turned.
Then smiled.
“You’re finally here.”
Nora walked toward her.
“Where is everyone?”
Lily pointed toward the center of town.
“They’re waiting.”
“Who?”
“Everyone you’ve forgotten.”
Nora looked around.
Faces began appearing in windows.
People she recognized.
Her old teacher.
Her childhood neighbor.
Her first friend.
People who had died years ago.
They were all watching her.
Her mother whispered,
“The memory town.”
“What does that mean?”
“Every person who disappeared left a memory behind.”
“And those memories became this place.”
Nora stared at Lily.
“Are you a memory?”
Lily nodded.
“I died here in 2019.”
Nora felt a chill.
“How?”
Lily’s smile disappeared.
“The train.”
A loud whistle echoed through the town.
Nora turned.
At the end of the street, a train appeared.
The same black train.
The Last Train to Midnight.
It moved slowly through the town.
But there were no tracks.
The train stopped.
Its doors opened.
Someone stepped out.
Nora’s heart stopped.
Daniel.
The real Daniel.
He looked exactly as she remembered him.
He ran toward her.
“Nor!”
Nora cried.
“Daniel!”
They hugged.
This time, she knew.
This was her brother.
No black eyes.
No strange smile.
Just Daniel.
Alive.
Her mother began crying.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom?”
She nodded.
“I’ve been waiting for you.”
Nora looked at him.
“You’re alive.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not completely.”
“What does that mean?”
He looked toward the train.
“I’ve been trapped between worlds.”
“Can we leave?”
“Yes.”
Nora’s heart filled with hope.
“Then let’s go.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Not all of us.”
Nora frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the train only takes one person back.”
Silence.
Nora looked at her mother.
“What?”
Daniel explained.
“The train needs a memory to replace the person who leaves.”
Nora stared.
“Someone has to stay?”
Daniel nodded.
“Forever.”
Her mother stepped forward.
“Take me.”
Nora shook her head.
“No.”
Her mother smiled.
“You’ve already lost enough.”
“I won’t lose you again.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“I’ll stay.”
“No.”
“Nor—”
“No!”
Nora looked toward the train.
“There has to be another way.”
Daniel pointed toward the center of town.
“There is.”
“What?”
“The first memory.”
Nora frowned.
“What is the first memory?”
Daniel’s face became serious.
“Your memory.”
Nora froze.
“My memory?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Hollow Creek was built around you.”
Nora shook her head.
“That makes no sense.”
Daniel looked at their mother.
“Tell her.”
Their mother looked down.
Nora’s voice became quiet.
“Tell me what?”
Her mother finally spoke.
“When you were six years old, you disappeared for three days.”
Nora stared.
“I don’t remember.”
“Exactly.”
“What happened?”
“You came back.”
“Where was I?”
Her mother began crying.
“Here.”
Nora looked around the strange town.
“Here?”
“Below Hollow Creek.”
Nora couldn’t breathe.
Her mother continued.
“You were the first person to return.”
“What did I see?”
“You saw the people beneath the town.”
Nora’s mind suddenly filled with flashes.
A dark hallway.
A red door.
A train.
A little girl.
A man without a face.
And a voice.
WE WILL REMEMBER YOU.
Nora stumbled backward.
“I remember.”
Daniel grabbed her hand.
“You remembered too much.”
The town began shaking.
Buildings started collapsing.
The sky turned black.
Lily screamed:
“They’re coming!”
Nora looked toward the train.
People began running toward it.
Thousands of memories.
All trying to escape.
Her mother grabbed Nora.
“We have to go.”
“Where?”
“To the first station.”
“Where is it?”
Her mother pointed toward the horizon.
A giant clock tower appeared.
Its clock showed:
11:59
Daniel whispered:
“Midnight is coming.”
Nora looked at the train.
“What happens at midnight?”
Daniel’s face became pale.
“The town resets.”
“And?”
“Everyone forgets.”
“Everyone?”
“Everyone except you.”
Nora stared.
“Why me?”
Daniel answered:
“Because you’re not just a memory.”
The clock began ticking.
11:59:10
11:59:11
11:59:12
Nora looked at her hands.
They were beginning to glow.
Daniel stared at her.
“You are the key.”
“To what?”
The clock reached:
11:59:30
Her mother whispered:
“The door between life and death.”
The train whistle screamed.
The town went completely dark.
Then a voice echoed through the streets.
“NORA BLAKE.”
She looked up.
A huge shadow appeared above the town.
“COME HOME.”
Nora squeezed Daniel’s hand.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
The clock reached:
11:59:59.
And the entire town disappeared.
To be continued…
