The Truth Beneath the Lies
THE SUMMER YOU WALKED INTO MY LIFE · August 25, 2026
Rain covered the city the night Ethan finally told Emma everything.
They sat in his study, surrounded by old photographs, documents, and letters that had belonged to his father.
Emma held one photograph in her hands.
A younger version of Ethan stood beside his father.
“You look just like him,” she whispered.
Ethan smiled sadly.
“Everyone used to say that.”
“What happened to him?”
Ethan looked toward the window.
“My father was an architect. He discovered that one of his business partners was stealing money from several construction projects.”
“Lucas?”
“No.”
Ethan shook his head.
“Someone much more powerful.”
He opened an old file.
Inside were newspaper clippings.
Contracts.
Photographs.
Names.
Emma looked at the documents.
Then she saw one name.
Richard Vale.
“Who is he?”
“My father’s business partner.”
Ethan’s voice became colder.
“He disappeared the same week my father vanished.”
Emma looked at him.
“Did the police investigate?”
“Yes.”
“They found nothing.”
“And your mother?”
“She believed my father had abandoned us.”
Ethan looked down.
“I believed it too.”
Emma reached for his hand.
“Until now.”
He nodded.
“Until I found this.”
He handed her an old letter.
The handwriting was shaky.
Ethan,
If you ever read this, don’t trust the people who tell you I left willingly.
There is something hidden in the old summer house.
Only you can find it.
Protect your mother.
And never trust Richard.
Emma looked at Ethan.
“When did you find this?”
“Two weeks ago.”
“Before you met me?”
“Yes.”
“Then Lucas…”
Ethan nodded.
“Lucas may be working for Richard.”
Emma’s stomach tightened.
“Why would Lucas follow me?”
“Because he knew you were connected to me.”
“But how?”
Ethan looked at the photograph from the lake.
“I don’t know.”
A silence fell between them.
Then Emma remembered something.
“The night I met Lucas…”
Ethan looked at her.
“What?”
“He asked about your company.”
“Why?”
“I thought he was just being curious.”
Emma suddenly stood.
“He knew about you before I did.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
He picked up his phone.
“We’re going to the summer house.”
The old summer house stood beside a lake nearly two hours outside the city.
It had been abandoned for years.
The windows were dusty.
The doors were covered in vines.
Ethan unlocked the front door.
Emma followed him inside.
“Where do we start?”
“My father said something was hidden here.”
They searched every room.
Nothing.
Then Emma noticed something unusual.
A painting hung crookedly on the wall.
“Wait.”
She moved toward it.
“Ethan.”
He came over.
She touched the frame.
“It moves.”
Together, they removed the painting.
Behind it was a small safe.
Ethan stared at it.
“I don’t know the combination.”
Emma looked at the photograph.
“Maybe your father left a clue.”
She searched the room.
Then she noticed an old clock.
It had stopped at 11:17.
“11:17.”
Ethan entered the numbers.
The safe clicked.
Inside was a small black box.
Ethan opened it.
There were documents.
A USB drive.
And a photograph.
Ethan picked up the photograph.
His face went completely pale.
Emma looked at it.
It showed Ethan’s father standing beside Richard Vale.
And beside them stood Lucas.
Emma’s heart stopped.
“Lucas knew your father.”
Ethan stared at the photograph.
“He was a teenager.”
“Then this has been going on for years.”
Ethan picked up the USB drive.
“We need to see what’s on this.”
They returned to the city before midnight.
Ethan connected the USB drive to his laptop.
A video appeared.
His father’s face filled the screen.
Ethan stopped breathing.
“Hello, Ethan.”
His father’s voice sounded older.
Tired.
Afraid.
“If you’re watching this, I didn’t make it home.”
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
“I need you to understand something. I didn’t abandon you.”
Emma gently held his hand.
The video continued.
“Richard discovered that I had evidence against him. He threatened my family.”
His father paused.
“I had to disappear to keep you safe.”
Ethan whispered:
“Why didn’t you come back?”
The video continued.
“Because he told me that if I returned, he would hurt you.”
A second video appeared automatically.
This time, Richard was speaking.
“You should have kept your mouth shut.”
The screen went black.
Ethan stared at the laptop.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
Lucas’s voice came through.
“You found it.”
Ethan stood.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere close.”
“What do you want?”
“The drive.”
“Come get it.”
Lucas laughed.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
“The drive contains evidence that can destroy powerful people.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“Richard.”
“Among others.”
Emma moved closer.
Lucas continued.
“But I don’t want the drive.”
“Then what?”
“I want Emma.”
Ethan froze.
Lucas spoke calmly.
“Bring the drive to the old railway station.”
“You’ll let her go?”
“If you cooperate.”
Ethan looked at Emma.
She shook her head.
“No.”
Lucas laughed.
“I heard that.”
Ethan’s voice became cold.
“If you touch her…”
“What?”
“I’ll find you.”
“You already have.”
The call ended.
The old railway station was nearly empty when they arrived.
Ethan held the black box.
Emma stood beside him.
“You shouldn’t have come.”
“I wasn’t letting you go alone.”
“This could be dangerous.”
“So could losing you.”
He looked at her.
“I love you.”
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“I love you too.”
A voice came from behind them.
“Beautiful.”
They turned.
Lucas stood near the tracks.
Two men stood beside him.
Emma stepped closer to Ethan.
Lucas held out his hand.
“The drive.”
Ethan didn’t move.
“Where is Richard?”
Lucas smiled.
“You’re asking the wrong question.”
“What do you mean?”
“Richard isn’t the one running this.”
Ethan frowned.
“Then who is?”
Lucas looked toward Emma.
She suddenly understood.
“Lucas…”
He smiled.
“You finally figured it out.”
Ethan looked at Emma.
“What?”
She stared at Lucas.
“Who?”
Lucas pointed toward the station entrance.
A woman stepped from the shadows.
Emma’s face went white.
She knew her.
It was Mia.
Her best friend.
The person she had trusted more than anyone.
“Mia?”
Mia’s expression was cold.
“Hello, Emma.”
Ethan stepped in front of her.
“You betrayed her.”
Mia smiled.
“I didn’t betray anyone.”
Emma’s voice shook.
“Then why?”
Mia looked at her.
“Because you were never supposed to fall in love with Ethan.”
Silence.
Ethan stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
Mia’s smile disappeared.
“It means your father didn’t disappear because of Richard.”
She looked at Ethan.
“He disappeared because of my family.”
Ethan froze.
Then Mia said the words that destroyed everything they thought they knew.
“Your father is alive.”
Emma grabbed Ethan’s hand.
And somewhere beneath the old railway station, a door opened.
Someone was waiting for them.
Someone Ethan had spent his entire childhood believing was gone forever.
To be continued…
