The Truth Beneath the Silence

Chapter 3

The Truth Beneath the Silence

WHEN THE STARS REMEMBERED US · August 18, 2026

The next morning, Amelia woke before sunrise.

She hadn’t slept much.

Adrian’s message was still on her phone.

He will leave you again.

She had read it so many times that the words no longer looked real.

But the photograph did.

Someone had been watching her.

Someone knew where she lived.

And somehow, that someone was connected to Noah.

Amelia stood by the window, staring at the empty street.

Then her phone rang.

Noah.

She answered.

“Hello?”

“Are you okay?”

His voice sounded worried.

“How did you know something was wrong?”

“You didn’t answer my message.”

Amelia looked at her phone.

She hadn’t even noticed it.

“I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not.”

She sighed.

“Come over.”

There was silence.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

Twenty minutes later, Noah stood outside her door.

The moment Amelia opened it, he knew.

“What happened?”

She showed him the photograph.

His face went pale.

“Where did you get this?”

“Someone sent it.”

“Who?”

“Adrian.”

Noah closed his eyes.

“He’s getting closer.”

“To me?”

“To both of us.”

Amelia stepped aside.

“Come in.”

Noah entered.

She locked the door behind him.

“I want the truth.”

“You’ll have it.”

“Everything.”

“Everything.”

They sat across from each other.

Noah took a deep breath.

“Seven years ago, my father was involved in a company that was moving money illegally.”

Amelia listened.

“I discovered it by accident. I found documents that proved everything.”

“Did your father know?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he stop?”

“Because he was already trapped.”

Noah looked down.

“Adrian was the person controlling everything.”

Amelia frowned.

“Your father worked for him?”

“Not exactly.”

Noah paused.

“Adrian was an investor. He had connections everywhere. Politicians. Business owners. Lawyers.”

“And your father?”

“My father borrowed money from him.”

“What happened?”

“He couldn’t pay it back.”

Noah’s voice became quieter.

“So Adrian threatened him.”

Amelia swallowed.

“Where does your family fit into this?”

“My father wanted to confess.”

Noah looked at her.

“Adrian found out.”

“What did he do?”

“He threatened my family.”

Silence filled the room.

“And then?”

Noah looked toward the window.

“My father told me to leave.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian knew about you.”

Amelia’s heart tightened.

“He knew about me?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Noah gave a sad smile.

“You were the most important person in my life.”

Amelia looked away.

“And that made me a weakness.”

Noah nodded.

“Adrian told me that if I didn’t leave the city, you would suffer.”

Tears appeared in Amelia’s eyes.

“So you left.”

“I thought I was saving you.”

“You should have trusted me.”

“I was eighteen.”

He looked at her.

“I was terrified.”

Amelia’s anger softened.

She understood now.

Not completely.

But enough.

“What happened after you left?”

“I spent years trying to find proof against Adrian.”

“And your father?”

“He died two years later.”

Amelia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.”

Noah nodded.

“Before he died, he gave me a file.”

“What was inside?”

“Names.”

“Whose names?”

“Everyone involved.”

Amelia looked at him.

“And Adrian?”

“His name was at the top.”

Noah reached into his bag.

He pulled out a small black notebook.

“This is the original evidence.”

Amelia stared at it.

“You still have it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I couldn’t trust anyone.”

“Not even the police?”

“I didn’t know who was working for Adrian.”

She looked at the notebook.

“Why come back now?”

“Because the case has been reopened.”

Amelia’s eyes widened.

“By whom?”

“Someone finally found the missing financial records.”

“And you?”

“I’m the last witness.”

She understood.

“That’s why Adrian is back.”

Noah nodded.

“He wants the evidence destroyed.”

“And you?”

“I’m going to give it to the authorities.”

Amelia looked at him.

“Then why are you here?”

Noah’s expression softened.

“Because I couldn’t leave you again.”

Her heart ached.

She reached for his hand.

This time, he didn’t hesitate.

Their fingers intertwined.

“I was angry with you,” she whispered.

“I know.”

“I still am.”

“I know.”

“But I understand now.”

Noah looked at her.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

“I know.”

He gently squeezed her hand.

“Amelia…”

“Yes?”

“I need you to leave the city.”

She immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“Please.”

“No.”

“It’s dangerous.”

“I’m not running.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

She looked into his eyes.

“You left once to protect me.”

She paused.

“Don’t make the same mistake twice.”

Noah stared at her.

Then he smiled.

A small, broken smile.

“You haven’t changed.”

“Neither have you.”

That evening, they went to the old seaside house where Noah had lived as a teenager.

The house had been abandoned for years.

Dust covered the furniture.

Old photographs still hung on the walls.

Maya—no, Amelia corrected herself—walked slowly through the rooms.

She stopped at a bedroom door.

“This was yours?”

Noah nodded.

She entered.

A small wooden desk stood near the window.

On the wall were dozens of photographs.

Amelia stared.

There were pictures of the sea.

The old bookstore.

The train station.

And her.

Dozens of photographs of her.

Some were from when they were teenagers.

Others were photographs he had taken secretly from a distance during the years after he left.

She turned toward him.

“You kept these?”

“I couldn’t forget you.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Why didn’t you ever send them?”

“I thought it would put you in danger.”

She walked closer.

“You really thought about me all these years?”

“Every day.”

Amelia looked at him.

“Then why did you let me believe you didn’t care?”

“Because sometimes loving someone means letting them hate you if it keeps them alive.”

She couldn’t hold back her tears.

She stepped forward and hugged him.

Noah wrapped his arms around her.

For a long moment, they simply stood there.

Seven years of distance disappeared.

“I missed you,” Amelia whispered.

“I missed you more.”

She pulled away slightly.

“That’s impossible.”

He smiled.

“Then we’ll argue about it for the rest of our lives.”

She laughed softly.

“You’re assuming we’re going to have the rest of our lives.”

“I am.”

Their eyes met.

Slowly, Noah touched her cheek.

He hesitated.

Amelia closed the distance between them.

Their lips met.

It was gentle.

Careful.

Almost afraid.

Then Noah pulled her closer.

The kiss carried seven years of longing.

Seven years of unanswered questions.

Seven years of love that had never really disappeared.

When they finally pulled apart, Amelia rested her forehead against his.

“That was a long time coming.”

Noah smiled.

“Seven years.”

She laughed.

“Too long.”

Suddenly, Noah’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”

He didn’t answer.

The phone stopped.

Then a message appeared.

Noah opened it.

His face went completely pale.

Amelia looked at him.

“What?”

He handed her the phone.

There was a photograph.

The old seaside house.

Taken from outside.

Below it were six words.

I know where you are now.

Amelia’s heart stopped.

Noah immediately grabbed her hand.

“We have to go.”

They hurried downstairs.

But before they reached the front door, they heard a car outside.

Headlights appeared through the windows.

Noah turned off the lights.

“Stay behind me.”

The car stopped.

A door opened.

Footsteps approached the house.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Someone knocked.

Three times.

Amelia held Noah’s hand.

The knocking stopped.

Then a voice came through the door.

A voice she recognized.

“Good evening, Noah.”

Adrian.

Noah’s grip tightened around her hand.

Adrian continued.

“You’ve had seven years to disappear.”

A pause.

“But now you’ve come back.”

His voice became colder.

“And this time, I’m not letting you leave.”

Noah looked at Amelia.

She looked back at him.

For the first time, they both understood.

Their love story had returned.

But so had the danger.

And before the night ended, one of them would have to make a choice that could change everything.
