The War Between Tomorrows

Chapter 4

The War Between Tomorrows

THE STAR THAT REMEMBERED TOMORROW · August 6, 2026

The Void Harvester struck with terrifying speed.

Its massive arm crashed through the shattered crystal wall, sending razor-like shards across the Library. Captain Elias tackled Kael to the floor just as the creature’s claws swept over them.

The shelves trembled.

Thousands of glowing books burst into the air, circling like a storm of living stars.

“The seal!” the older Kael shouted. “Protect the seal!”

Kael tightened his grip on the ancient key. The symbols engraved on its surface blazed with silver light, growing brighter with every heartbeat.

Outside, more Void Harvesters emerged from the cracks in reality. They surrounded the floating island, their towering forms blotting out the white sky.

Nova’s drone scanned them frantically.

“Warning. These entities are consuming space-time itself. Conventional weapons will have no effect.”

Captain Elias lowered his plasma rifle.

“Then we’ll find another way.”

The older Kael stepped into the center of the Library.

He raised both hands.

Every floating book opened at once.

Golden streams of light poured from their pages, weaving together into enormous chains that wrapped around the nearest Void Harvester.

The creature roared, shaking the entire realm.

For a brief moment…

it stopped moving.

“Run!” the older Kael commanded.

The crew sprinted through the collapsing Library toward the Aurora Dawn.

Behind them, the crystal floor cracked apart, revealing an endless black abyss beneath.

Professor Mira Solis stumbled.

Kael caught her arm before she fell.

“Go!” she urged.

“I’m not leaving you!”

Another deafening roar echoed behind them.

The chains of light shattered.

The imprisoned Harvester broke free.

Its countless glowing eyes locked onto Kael once again.

It wasn’t chasing the crew.

It was hunting him.

The team reached the ship just as another floating island disintegrated into silver dust.

Captain Elias sealed the hatch.

“Launch!”

The Aurora Dawn lifted off instantly.

Outside, the impossible realm was collapsing.

Rivers of light vanished.

Crystal forests crumbled.

Entire islands dissolved into nothingness.

Nova reported urgently,

“The dimensional gateway is destabilizing.”

“Can we escape?” Elias asked.

“Probability…”

A pause.

“…fourteen percent.”

Silence filled the bridge.

As the ship accelerated, Kael looked back through the observation dome.

The Library of Forgotten Futures was disappearing.

The older Kael still stood at its entrance.

He didn’t try to flee.

Instead, he smiled.

He raised one hand in farewell.

Then he pressed it against the glowing crystal floor.

The entire Library erupted into blinding silver light.

A massive shockwave swept through the realm.

The pursuing Void Harvesters were thrown backward.

The explosion created a narrow path toward the gateway.

Nova shouted,

“Route open!”

Captain Elias didn’t hesitate.

“Maximum speed!”

The Aurora Dawn raced toward the closing portal.

Behind them…

the older Kael and the Library vanished inside the expanding light.

Kael whispered,

“I’m sorry…”

No answer came.

Only silence.

The ship burst through the gateway.

Reality snapped back into place.

Stars returned.

The silver object floated silently behind them.

For several long moments, no one spoke.

Then Nova interrupted.

“I have detected an unauthorized life-form aboard the ship.”

Every crew member froze.

Captain Elias slowly turned.

“Location?”

“Deck Seven.”

“Cargo Hold Three.”

No one had entered the ship after they left the Library.

The security cameras activated.

A lone figure stood in the center of the cargo bay.

A little girl.

She looked no older than ten.

She wore a white dress that shimmered like starlight.

Kael recognized her instantly.

“Aria…”

She slowly looked up at the camera.

Then she smiled.

“I told you…”

“…you would remember me.”

The bridge fell silent.

Every monitor displayed the same image.

A young girl stood alone in Cargo Hold Three, barefoot on the cold metallic floor. Her white dress shimmered like moonlight, and tiny silver particles drifted around her as though gravity had forgotten she existed.

Captain Elias frowned.

“Seal Deck Seven.”

Nova replied immediately.

“Unable to comply.”

“Why?”

“The ship no longer recognizes her as an intruder.”

Professor Mira Solis stared at the screen.

“Then who is she?”

Nova’s answer chilled everyone.

“The ship identifies her as… Crew Member One.”

A heavy silence followed.

“The Aurora Dawn has never had a Crew Member One.”

Kael, Elias, Professor Solis, and two security officers descended to Deck Seven.

The corridor lights dimmed as they approached Cargo Hold Three.

The door slid open on its own.

Aria stood in the center of the room, gently tracing glowing patterns in the air with her fingertips. Every movement left behind tiny constellations that slowly faded.

She turned and smiled at Kael.

“You came.”

Kael took a cautious step forward.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Aria.”

“I know that.”

“No,” she said softly. “You only remember my name. You don’t remember me.”

Captain Elias raised his rifle.

“Stay back from her.”

Aria looked at the weapon with innocent curiosity.

“I’ve seen you do that before.”

Elias stiffened.

“What?”

“In forty-three timelines.”

His finger tightened on the trigger.

“How do you know that?”

She lowered her eyes.

“Because I watched every one.”

Professor Solis stepped forward.

“What are you?”

Aria looked almost hurt.

“I was human.”

The room became eerily quiet.

“A very long time ago.”

She touched the wall of the cargo bay.

The metal rippled like water.

Silver light spread across it, forming moving images.

The crew watched in stunned silence.

A beautiful civilization appeared beneath a silver sky.

Towering crystal cities.

Floating oceans.

Children laughing.

The same world Kael had glimpsed in his vision.

“It was called Elyndor,” Aria whispered.

“We believed time could heal everything.”

She paused.

“We were wrong.”

Darkness swept across the vision.

Towering shadow creatures—the Void Harvesters—descended from the sky.

The crystal cities crumbled.

Stars vanished one by one.

“Our people discovered that every possible future was connected.”

“We tried to protect them.”

“We built the Heart Star.”

The silver celestial object appeared in the vision.

“It wasn’t a weapon.”

“It was a memory.”

Kael frowned.

“A memory?”

“A place where every future was preserved.”

She looked directly at him.

“And where the Keepers were chosen.”

Kael instinctively gripped the ancient key.

“The Keeper…”

“…is me.”

Aria nodded.

“The last one.”

Captain Elias lowered his rifle.

“If that’s true… why doesn’t he remember?”

“Because each time he failed…”

“…he erased his own memories to give himself another chance.”

Professor Solis closed her eyes.

“The older Kael…”

“…was telling the truth.”

Suddenly, alarms blared across the ship.

Nova’s calm voice was replaced by urgency.

“Warning. Multiple dimensional ruptures detected.”

The bridge screens lit up.

Outside the observation dome, space itself was cracking.

Thin black fractures spread between the stars.

One crack became ten.

Ten became hundreds.

Then—

Gigantic hands emerged from the darkness.

The Void Harvesters had followed them.

Captain Elias rushed to the bridge.

“Battle stations!”

The Aurora Dawn accelerated as beams of silver energy fired from its hull.

The attacks struck the shadow creatures…

and passed straight through them.

“No effect!” Nova reported.

The largest Harvester slowly raised its head.

Its countless eyes focused on the ship.

Then every speaker aboard the Aurora Dawn activated simultaneously.

A single voice echoed through every corridor.

Deep.

Ancient.

Endless.

“Return the Keeper… and your universe will be spared.”

No one spoke.

Kael looked at Aria.

“If I go with them…”

She looked away.

“They won’t stop.”

“Then what do they want?”

Aria finally met his eyes.

“They don’t want you dead.”

“They want what you still carry.”

Kael looked down at the glowing key.

Its symbols were changing.

A hidden section unfolded, revealing a tiny crystal at its center.

Aria whispered,

“That isn’t a key.”

“It’s the last fragment…”

“…of the Heart Star.”

Outside, the Void Harvesters began surrounding the Aurora Dawn from every direction, cutting off every escape route.

Captain Elias gripped the controls.

“We’re trapped.”

And deep within the ship, the crystal inside the ancient key began to beat…

like a living heart.
