The War Between Two Worlds

Chapter 5

The War Between Two Worlds

The Last Moonblade · July 21, 2026

The first thing Kael felt was warmth.

The second was pain.

The third was Lyra’s voice.

“Kael.”

He opened his eyes.

A pale blue sky stretched above him.

For one beautiful moment, he thought everything had ended.

Then he remembered.

The Void.

Arcturus.

The portal.

The battle.

He immediately sat up.

“Lyra!”

“I’m here.”

She was sitting beside him.

Alive.

Kael stared at her.

“You’re okay.”

Lyra smiled.

“Disappointed?”

Kael laughed.

“You have no idea.”

“That’s good.”

He looked around.

They were standing on a hill overlooking Aetheria.

The kingdom was still there.

But it had changed.

The sky was covered in dark clouds.

The black tower had disappeared.

The Void portal was gone.

But the city was damaged.

Smoke rose from the streets.

Kael’s mother stood nearby.

She was staring at the kingdom.

“How long were we gone?”

She turned.

“Three days.”

Kael froze.

“Three days?”

Lyra nodded.

“The battle in the Void affected time.”

Kael looked at the city.

“What happened?”

His mother didn’t answer.

Kael understood.

“Arcturus.”

She nodded.

“He attacked while we were gone.”

Kael stood.

“How many?”

“Too many.”

Kael’s hands tightened.

“Are they alive?”

“Some.”

“Then we go.”

Lyra stood.

“Where?”

“To Aetheria.”

His mother stopped him.

“Kael.”

He turned.

“Yes?”

“Arcturus is there.”

Kael’s heart stopped.

“What?”

“He didn’t disappear.”

Kael looked toward the city.

“Then where is he?”

His mother pointed.

Toward the capital.

The great palace.

A black cloud surrounded it.

Kael understood.

“The throne.”

His mother nodded.

“He has taken control of the kingdom.”

Kael’s eyes hardened.

“Then we take it back.”

Lyra stepped beside him.

“I’m coming.”

Kael looked at her.

“You’re injured.”

“I’m fine.”

“You almost died.”

“So did you.”

“That’s different.”

Lyra smiled.

“You always say that.”

Kael shook his head.

“You’re impossible.”

“And you’re annoying.”

His mother watched them.

For the first time in years…

She smiled.

“You remind me of us.”

Kael looked at her.

“Who?”

“Your father and me.”

Kael became quiet.

“Did you love him?”

His mother nodded.

“Very much.”

“Then why did you leave him?”

“Because sometimes love isn’t enough to defeat darkness.”

Kael looked at Lyra.

“Maybe it is this time.”

His mother looked at them.

“Maybe.”

They entered Aetheria at sunset.

The city was silent.

Too silent.

No children played in the streets.

No merchants called from their shops.

No music filled the air.

The people had locked themselves inside.

Kael walked through the empty streets.

He remembered this place.

His childhood.

His home.

The small market where his mother used to buy bread.

The fountain where he had met his first friend.

The training yard where he had dreamed of becoming a warrior.

Now everything was broken.

Kael stopped.

A little boy stood in the middle of the road.

He was holding a wooden sword.

Kael approached.

“Are you okay?”

The boy looked at him.

“Are you the Moonblade?”

Kael froze.

“Who told you that?”

“Everyone.”

The boy looked at the sword.

“Are you going to kill the Void King?”

Kael didn’t know what to say.

Then he knelt.

“I’ll try.”

The boy smiled.

“That’s good.”

Kael stood.

The boy ran away.

Lyra watched him.

“You like children.”

Kael looked at her.

“What?”

“You were gentle with him.”

“I was normal.”

“You’re never normal.”

Kael smiled.

“Neither are you.”

They continued walking.

Then the palace gates opened.

Soldiers marched out.

Hundreds.

Kael raised his sword.

Lyra drew hers.

His mother stepped forward.

“Wait.”

A soldier approached.

He removed his helmet.

Kael recognized him.

“Captain Riven?”

The captain looked exhausted.

“Kael.”

Kael lowered his sword.

“What happened?”

Riven looked toward the palace.

“Arcturus has taken the throne.”

“How?”

“Your father’s old army.”

Kael froze.

“My father’s?”

“Yes.”

“The man who raised me?”

Riven nodded.

“He was a Moonblade commander.”

Kael looked confused.

“Why would he serve Arcturus?”

“He doesn’t.”

Riven’s face became serious.

“He is fighting him.”

Kael’s heart jumped.

“Where?”

“Inside the palace.”

Kael immediately moved forward.

Riven stopped him.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“There is something you need to know.”

Kael turned.

Riven looked at Lyra.

Then at Kael.

“Arcturus has captured the Moonlight Temple.”

Lyra’s expression changed.

“No.”

Kael looked at her.

“What?”

“The temple.”

“Why is it important?”

“Because that’s where my power comes from.”

Kael’s mother stepped forward.

“Not just your power.”

Lyra looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“The temple contains the Heart of Moonlight.”

Lyra froze.

“What?”

Kael looked between them.

“What is the Heart of Moonlight?”

His mother answered.

“The only power capable of destroying Arcturus.”

Kael understood.

“And he has it.”

“Yes.”

Kael looked at the palace.

“Then we take it back.”

Lyra grabbed his arm.

“Kael.”

He turned.

She looked frightened.

“I don’t know if I can.”

“Can what?”

“Use the Moonlight.”

Kael stared.

“Why?”

“Because my father died trying.”

“Your father wasn’t you.”

“He was stronger.”

“Maybe.”

Kael stepped closer.

“But he wasn’t you.”

Lyra looked at him.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means you don’t have to be your father.”

He took her hand.

“You just have to be Lyra.”

She stared at him.

Then she smiled.

“You’re getting better at this.”

“At what?”

“Talking.”

“I always talk.”

“Yes.”

“Too much?”

“Definitely.”

Kael laughed.

Then the palace doors opened.

A voice echoed through the city.

“Kael Ardyn.”

Everyone froze.

Arcturus.

His voice filled the streets.

“You have returned.”

Kael raised his head.

“I have.”

“Come to me.”

“No.”

Silence.

Arcturus laughed.

“You think you can defeat me?”

Kael raised the Moonblade.

“I know I can.”

“You are my son.”

Kael’s expression hardened.

“I am not you.”

“Then prove it.”

The palace doors exploded.

A wave of darkness swept through the streets.

Kael blocked it.

The force pushed him backward.

Lyra grabbed his hand.

“Kael!”

“I’m okay.”

Arcturus appeared above the palace.

He wore a black crown.

His eyes burned silver.

Behind him stood Kael’s father.

He was wounded.

Blood covered his face.

“Father!”

The man looked at him.

“Kael.”

Arcturus held a blade against his throat.

“One step closer…”

Kael froze.

“…and he dies.”

Kael’s father shouted:

“Don’t listen to him!”

Arcturus pressed the blade closer.

Kael’s mother stepped forward.

“Arcturus!”

He looked at her.

“Ah.”

His smile became cold.

“The woman who started all this.”

Kael’s mother raised her head.

“Let him go.”

“Why?”

“Because this is between us.”

Arcturus laughed.

“It stopped being between us the day you chose him.”

Kael’s mother stared.

“You know why I chose him.”

Arcturus’s expression changed.

“Yes.”

“Then you know I did it for Kael.”

Arcturus looked at Kael.

“He was always the problem.”

Kael stepped forward.

“Leave my father alone.”

Arcturus smiled.

“Which one?”

Kael froze.

Arcturus looked at the wounded man.

“Do you still call him father?”

Kael’s voice became quiet.

“Yes.”

The man looked at him.

Tears filled his eyes.

Arcturus shook his head.

“Pathetic.”

Kael raised his sword.

“Let him go.”

“Come take him.”

Kael looked at Lyra.

She nodded.

He stepped forward.

The battle began.

The palace soldiers attacked.

Kael fought through them.

Lyra moved beside him.

Their movements were becoming synchronized.

Kael blocked.

Lyra struck.

He attacked.

She protected him.

They fought like they had trained together for years.

At the palace entrance, a massive creature appeared.

Kael recognized it.

The Void Knight.

The same creature he had fought before.

But this one was different.

Larger.

Stronger.

Covered in black armor.

Kael raised his sword.

“Again?”

Lyra looked at him.

“You know this thing?”

“It owes me a rematch.”

The Void Knight attacked.

Kael blocked.

The impact pushed him backward.

Lyra struck from behind.

The creature turned.

Kael attacked.

Their swords hit its armor.

Nothing.

Kael frowned.

“That’s new.”

Lyra looked at the creature.

“There’s a crystal in its chest.”

“Can you break it?”

“Maybe.”

“Then do it.”

“How?”

“I’ll distract it.”

“That’s your plan?”

“Yes.”

“It’s terrible.”

“You have a better one?”

“No.”

“Then let’s go.”

Kael charged.

The Void Knight attacked.

Kael jumped.

He landed on its shoulder.

The creature roared.

Kael climbed toward its head.

“Hey!”

The creature grabbed him.

Kael was thrown across the courtyard.

He crashed into a statue.

“Kael!”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re always saying that.”

“I am always fine.”

“You are literally bleeding.”

Kael looked at his arm.

“Oh.”

Lyra sighed.

“You’re impossible.”

The Void Knight charged.

Lyra raised her sword.

Moonlight filled the courtyard.

The creature stopped.

Kael stared.

“Lyra.”

She was glowing.

Her eyes had turned silver.

The mark on her chest burned brightly.

The Void Knight stepped backward.

Kael realized.

“It’s afraid of you.”

Lyra looked at her hands.

“I don’t understand.”

“You’re stronger than you think.”

“I don’t feel strong.”

Kael smiled.

“Neither do I.”

The Void Knight attacked.

Lyra raised her sword.

A beam of moonlight struck the creature.

Its armor shattered.

Kael saw the crystal.

He moved.

One strike.

The crystal broke.

The Void Knight disappeared.

Lyra fell.

Kael caught her.

“Are you okay?”

She opened her eyes.

“Did we win?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She closed her eyes.

Kael panicked.

“Lyra?”

“I’m sleeping.”

“Oh.”

She opened one eye.

“Idiot.”

Kael laughed.

“Welcome back.”

They entered the palace.

The halls were dark.

The walls were covered in black vines.

At the end stood the throne room.

Kael’s father was chained beside the throne.

Arcturus sat above him.

The Heart of Moonlight floated in his hand.

A glowing crystal.

Lyra stopped.

Her eyes widened.

“The Heart.”

Arcturus smiled.

“Yes.”

Kael raised his sword.

“Let him go.”

Arcturus looked at the wounded man.

“You still care about him.”

“He’s my father.”

“He is nothing.”

Kael’s father looked at him.

“Kael.”

“Yes?”

“Listen carefully.”

Arcturus stood.

“Don’t.”

Kael’s father ignored him.

“The Moonblade isn’t the sword.”

Kael froze.

“What?”

His father looked at Lyra.

“The Moonblade is the bond.”

Kael stared.

“Between what?”

“Between the human heart…”

He looked at Lyra.

“…and the Void.”

Kael’s eyes widened.

Arcturus attacked.

Kael blocked.

The impact sent him across the room.

Lyra screamed.

“Kael!”

Arcturus raised his hand.

Darkness surrounded him.

Kael stood.

The Moonblade began glowing.

“You can’t defeat me.”

Arcturus attacked.

Kael blocked.

Again.

Again.

The battle shook the palace.

Kael’s father shouted:

“Use the bond!”

Kael didn’t understand.

“What bond?”

“Your heart!”

Kael looked at Lyra.

She looked at him.

Everything became clear.

The Moonblade wasn’t power.

It wasn’t a weapon.

It was connection.

Trust.

Love.

Kael reached for Lyra.

She grabbed his hand.

The moment their fingers touched…

The Moonblade transformed.

The silver blade became pure white.

The Heart of Moonlight shattered in Arcturus’s hand.

Arcturus screamed.

“No!”

The entire palace shook.

Light filled the room.

Kael and Lyra stood together.

Their powers merged.

Moonlight and Void.

Human and darkness.

Two hearts.

One bond.

Arcturus attacked.

Kael blocked.

Lyra struck.

Arcturus fell.

For the first time…

The Void King was afraid.

Kael stepped toward him.

“It’s over.”

Arcturus laughed.

“No.”

He looked at Lyra.

“Ask her.”

Kael stopped.

“What?”

Arcturus smiled.

“Ask her what she must do.”

Kael turned.

Lyra’s face had gone pale.

“Lyra?”

She didn’t answer.

“Tell me.”

She looked at him.

Tears filled her eyes.

“The Heart of Moonlight was never meant to destroy Arcturus.”

Kael’s heart sank.

“Then what?”

“To seal him.”

“And?”

Lyra stepped closer.

“Someone has to stay inside the seal.”

Kael understood.

“No.”

“Kael.”

“No.”

“Someone has to.”

“Then I’ll do it.”

Lyra shook her head.

“You can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because the seal requires Moonlight blood.”

Kael stared.

“You’re the only one.”

Lyra nodded.

Kael grabbed her hand.

“Then we’ll find another way.”

“There isn’t one.”

“There has to be.”

“Kael.”

“No!”

The room fell silent.

Kael looked at Arcturus.

“Take me instead.”

Arcturus smiled.

“Interesting.”

Lyra shook her head.

“Kael, no.”

“I’ll stay.”

“You’ll die.”

“Then I’ll die.”

Lyra’s eyes filled with tears.

“You promised me.”

Kael froze.

“What?”

“You promised you wouldn’t become him.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

Lyra stepped closer.

“You are willing to sacrifice yourself for everyone.”

Kael couldn’t speak.

She touched his face.

“That’s what Arcturus did.”

Kael’s heart broke.

“I don’t know what else to do.”

Lyra whispered:

“Choose me.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“Choose us.”

Kael stared.

“Let the world burn?”

“No.”

She held his hand.

“Find another way.”

“How?”

Lyra smiled through her tears.

“You’re the Moonblade.”

Kael laughed sadly.

“That doesn’t help.”

“Then be Kael.”

He looked at her.

“Just Kael.”

For a moment, Kael didn’t know what to do.

Then he saw something.

The Moonblade.

The sword was glowing.

But the light wasn’t coming from him.

It was coming from Lyra.

Kael understood.

The Moonlight didn’t need a sacrifice.

It needed a choice.

Kael raised the sword.

“Arcturus.”

The Void King looked at him.

“I won’t become you.”

Arcturus laughed.

“You already have.”

Kael looked at Lyra.

“No.”

He took her hand.

“I choose her.”

The Moonblade exploded.

The Heart of Moonlight reformed.

But this time…

It was not a crystal.

It was a small light between Kael and Lyra.

The seal began forming.

Arcturus screamed.

“No!”

Kael and Lyra stood together.

The darkness surrounded the Void King.

Arcturus reached toward them.

“Kael!”

Kael stared.

For one second…

He saw the man behind the monster.

The father he never had.

The man who had once loved his mother.

The man who had wanted to protect his son.

Kael lowered his sword.

“Goodbye.”

Arcturus disappeared into the light.

The palace began collapsing.

Kael grabbed Lyra.

“Run!”

They raced through the halls.

His mother freed his father.

The four of them escaped the palace as it collapsed behind them.

The black clouds disappeared.

The sky became blue.

The Void portal closed.

The war was over.

But Kael knew something was wrong.

The Moonblade in his hand was fading.

Lyra looked at him.

“Kael.”

“What?”

“The sword.”

He looked down.

The blade was disappearing.

“Why?”

His mother stepped forward.

“The seal.”

Kael froze.

“What about it?”

She looked at Lyra.

“Someone still has to maintain it.”

Kael’s heart stopped.

“No.”

Lyra looked at him.

“Kael.”

“No.”

She smiled.

“Remember what you told me.”

“Don’t.”

“Stay you.”

Kael grabbed her.

“There’s another way.”

“Maybe.”

“Then we’ll find it.”

“Kael.”

“I’ll search every world.”

Lyra’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then search quickly.”

The light began surrounding her.

Kael held her tighter.

“No!”

His mother tried to stop him.

“Kael!”

Lyra touched his face.

“I love you.”

The words broke him.

“I love you too.”

The light exploded.

Lyra disappeared.

Kael fell to his knees.

The world became silent.

The war was over.

The Void was sealed.

Arcturus was defeated.

Aetheria was safe.

Everyone had survived.

Everyone except Lyra.

Kael stared at the empty space where she had stood.

His Moonblade was gone.

His power was gone.

The hero was gone.

Only Kael remained.

And for the first time…

He understood the terrible price of victory.

His mother placed a hand on his shoulder.

Kael didn’t move.

His father stood beside him.

Neither spoke.

The sun began rising.

A new day.

A new world.

But Kael couldn’t feel it.

He looked toward the sky.

“Lyra.”

Far away…

Beyond the world…

Beyond the stars…

A small voice whispered his name.

“Kael.”

He looked up.

The clouds moved.

For one brief moment…

He saw a silver moon.

And beneath it…

A girl with silver hair.

Smiling.

Then she disappeared.

Kael stood.

His heart was broken.

But not defeated.

He wiped his tears.

“Wait for me.”

His mother looked at him.

“Kael?”

He smiled.

“I’ll find her.”

His father stared.

“Where will you look?”

Kael looked toward the moon.

“Everywhere.”

And somewhere beyond the Void…

Lyra opened her eyes.

She was standing in a world of endless darkness.

The seal had closed.

But she wasn’t alone.

A voice echoed.

“Welcome, Moonlight Queen.”

Lyra turned.

Arcturus stood behind her.

She raised her sword.

“You’re alive.”

Arcturus smiled.

“So are you.”

Lyra looked around.

“Where is Kael?”

“Back in his world.”

“Then let me go.”

Arcturus laughed.

“You still don’t understand.”

“What?”

“The seal did not imprison me.”

Lyra froze.

“Then what did it do?”

Arcturus looked toward the darkness.

“It opened the door.”

Lyra’s heart stopped.

“What door?”

A massive red eye opened in the distance.

Something far older than Arcturus moved in the darkness.

Arcturus smiled.

“The true enemy.”

Lyra raised her sword.

“Who?”

The darkness answered.

A voice deeper than thunder.

“The Starborn.”

Lyra stared.

Arcturus laughed.

“Your lover will come for you.”

Lyra’s eyes hardened.

“And when he does…”

Arcturus looked at her.

“What?”

Lyra raised her sword.

“We’ll destroy you together.”

Far away, on Earth…

Kael looked at the moon.

He didn’t know what waited beyond it.

He didn’t know that the greatest war was yet to come.

But he knew one thing.

He would find Lyra.

Even if he had to cross every star.

Even if he had to fight every monster.

Even if the universe itself stood against him.

Because he had made her a promise.

And Kael Ardyn never broke a promise.
