THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MIRROR

Chapter 3

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MIRROR

THE LAST LETTER I WROTE FOR YOU · August 4, 2026

Adrian had spent the entire night searching.

Every road.

Every abandoned building.

Every place Elena had once loved.

Nothing.

She had vanished again.

But this time, he refused to believe she was dead.

He couldn’t.

Not after finding her.

Not after holding her.

Not after hearing her say those three words he had waited seven years to hear.

I love you.

Those words were still alive inside him.

They were stronger than fear.

Stronger than doubt.

Stronger than the terrible possibility that he might lose her again.

Adrian stood alone in the rain outside the old lighthouse.

The police had arrived hours ago.

They had searched the area.

They had questioned Victor.

They had found nothing.

And Adrian trusted none of them.

Not after everything Elena had told him.

He looked at his phone.

One message remained.

THE LAST LETTER WAS NEVER FOR YOU.

He had read it hundreds of times.

He couldn’t understand it.

Until another message appeared.

COME TO THE PLACE WHERE YOU FIRST KISSED HER.

Adrian’s heart stopped.

He knew the place.

The old greenhouse.

Seven years ago.

The night before Elena disappeared.

They had been seventeen.

It had been raining.

Elena had been crying.

Adrian had asked her why.

She had told him she was afraid of the future.

He had kissed her.

And she had whispered:

“Promise me you’ll never forget this.”

He had promised.

He had kept that promise.

Now he wondered if someone else had remembered it too.

Adrian drove through the storm.

The greenhouse stood behind the abandoned estate where Elena had grown up.

The glass walls were broken.

The flowers were dead.

But the old wooden door was still there.

Adrian stepped inside.

“Elena?”

Silence.

He walked forward.

The air smelled like wet earth.

His memories returned.

Elena laughing.

Elena running between the flowers.

Elena holding his hand.

Elena kissing him beneath the glass ceiling.

He closed his eyes.

For seven years, he had tried to forget this place.

Now every memory felt like a wound reopening.

Then he saw it.

A small white envelope lying on the floor.

His name was written on it.

ADRIAN.

He picked it up.

His hands trembled.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Adrian and Elena.

The photograph had been taken on their seventeenth birthday.

They were smiling.

Young.

Happy.

In love.

On the back of the photograph were six words.

SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE.

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

A voice spoke behind him.

“She wasn’t.”

Adrian turned.

Victor stood in the doorway.

Adrian immediately raised his gun.

“Where is she?”

Victor looked exhausted.

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“You were there.”

“Where?”

“The lighthouse.”

Victor’s expression changed.

“Yes.”

“You knew she was there.”

“I knew she was coming.”

“Then you knew she would be taken.”

Victor shook his head.

“I didn’t know.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Then tell me what you do know.”

Victor looked at the photograph.

“She was never supposed to come back.”

“Why?”

“Because the people who were hunting her believed she was dead.”

Adrian stared.

“Then why did she return?”

Victor’s eyes moved toward him.

“Because of you.”

Adrian’s heart tightened.

“She came back for me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you stop her?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

Adrian froze.

Victor continued.

“I told her to stay away from you.”

“Why?”

“Because your father was watching.”

“My father?”

Victor nodded.

“Not the man who raised you.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Then who?”

Victor hesitated.

“Your real father.”

“Who is he?”

Victor looked away.

“You aren’t ready.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“I’m standing in a greenhouse looking for a woman who disappeared for seven years.”

He stepped closer.

“I found out my father isn’t my father.”

“Yes.”

“My mother is alive.”

“Yes.”

“My uncle is alive.”

“Yes.”

“The woman I love is being held by people who want me dead.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re telling me I’m not ready?”

Victor looked at him.

“You are ready.”

“Then tell me.”

Victor sighed.

“Your real father’s name was Daniel Vale.”

Adrian froze.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Why have I never heard that name?”

“Because your father disappeared before you were born.”

“My mother said he died.”

“Your mother lied.”

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Everyone says they’re protecting me.”

“Because they are.”

“Then why does protecting me always look like destroying my life?”

Victor had no answer.

Adrian looked at the photograph.

“What happened to Daniel?”

Victor’s expression changed.

“He found out about Blackwood.”

“Then what?”

“He tried to expose them.”

“Who?”

“The organization behind it.”

Adrian’s heart raced.

“What’s its name?”

Victor whispered:

“The Circle.”

Adrian frowned.

“What is The Circle?”

“A network of powerful people.”

“Politicians?”

“Some.”

“Businessmen?”

“Many.”

“Police?”

“Some.”

Adrian stared.

“How powerful are they?”

Victor looked at him.

“Powerful enough to make a man disappear.”

“Like my father.”

“Yes.”

“And Elena?”

Victor nodded.

“Like Elena.”

Adrian’s hands tightened.

“Why was she targeted?”

“Because her father knew too much.”

“Then why was I targeted?”

Victor hesitated.

“Because Daniel left something behind.”

“What?”

“The evidence.”

“Where?”

Victor looked at him.

“With you.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

“You’ve had it your entire life.”

“Where?”

Victor pointed at the photograph.

“Look at the picture.”

Adrian stared.

“What am I looking for?”

“Your necklace.”

Adrian looked at the photograph.

He was wearing a small silver chain.

He had worn it since childhood.

His mother had given it to him.

Adrian touched his neck.

The necklace was still there.

Victor said:

“Your father hid a key inside it.”

Adrian froze.

He pulled the necklace from his neck.

A tiny metal piece hung from the chain.

He had always thought it was decoration.

He examined it.

There was a small symbol engraved on it.

A circle.

Broken in the middle.

Victor whispered:

“The symbol of The Circle.”

Adrian stared.

“Why would my father give this to me?”

“Because he knew they would search everyone else.”

“And not me.”

“Exactly.”

Adrian looked at Victor.

“Then why did they leave me alive?”

“Because they didn’t know you had it.”

Adrian’s heart raced.

“Until now.”

Victor nodded.

“Until now.”

Adrian looked around the greenhouse.

“So they know.”

“Yes.”

“Then Elena knew.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why she came back.”

“Yes.”

“She was trying to find the key.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

Adrian stared.

“Then what?”

Victor’s voice became quiet.

“She came back to protect you.”

Adrian’s heart broke.

Again.

And again.

The woman he had spent seven years believing had abandoned him had been protecting him all along.

She had watched him from a distance.

She had loved him in silence.

She had stayed away because she believed her presence would destroy him.

Adrian closed his eyes.

“She should have told me.”

“She was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing you.”

Adrian laughed sadly.

“She lost me anyway.”

Victor looked at him.

“No.”

Adrian opened his eyes.

“She didn’t.”

“Because you still love her.”

It wasn’t a question.

Adrian looked away.

“I never stopped.”

Victor nodded.

“Then you have to understand something.”

“What?”

“If you find her…”

He paused.

“…you may not be able to bring her home.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Why?”

“Because she has been hiding something.”

“What?”

Victor looked at him.

“She knows who killed your father.”

Adrian froze.

“Who?”

Victor didn’t answer.

“Victor.”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because the person who killed Daniel is still alive.”

Adrian stared.

“Who?”

Victor looked toward the broken windows.

Then he whispered:

“Elena.”

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

“No.”

“Adrian.”

“No.”

“Listen.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“Elena loved my father.”

“Yes.”

“She would never kill him.”

“She didn’t.”

Adrian froze.

“Then why did you say she knows who did?”

“Because she was there.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

“Where?”

“The night Daniel died.”

Adrian stepped backward.

“Elena was there?”

“Yes.”

“Then what happened?”

Victor looked at him.

“She saw everything.”

“Who killed him?”

Victor opened his mouth.

Before he could speak, a gunshot shattered the glass.

Victor fell.

Adrian screamed.

“Victor!”

He dropped beside him.

Blood spread across Victor’s shirt.

Adrian looked toward the broken window.

Someone was running.

He grabbed his gun and chased them.

Through the greenhouse.

Across the garden.

Into the darkness.

But the person disappeared.

Adrian returned.

Victor was still alive.

Barely.

“Who was it?”

Victor coughed.

“Go.”

“Where?”

“Find Elena.”

“Tell me who shot you.”

Victor grabbed his arm.

“She knows.”

“Knows what?”

“Everything.”

“Victor.”

He looked at Adrian.

“The last letter.”

“What about it?”

“Read the last page.”

Adrian froze.

“What last page?”

Victor smiled weakly.

“The page you never received.”

Then Victor’s eyes closed.

Adrian’s heart stopped.

“Victor!”

No response.

He called an ambulance.

Then he searched the greenhouse.

Nothing.

No letter.

No Elena.

Only the photograph.

And the necklace.

Adrian returned home before sunrise.

He went directly to his study.

The room had belonged to his father.

Adrian had never liked being there.

Now he understood why.

His father’s desk.

His father’s books.

His father’s photographs.

Everything had been waiting for him.

He opened every drawer.

Nothing.

Then he remembered Victor’s words.

Read the last page.

Adrian searched through Elena’s letter.

Page after page.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something.

The envelope was thicker than it should have been.

He held it against the light.

There was something hidden inside.

Adrian carefully opened the seam.

A small folded paper fell out.

His heart raced.

He unfolded it.

There was only one sentence.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, I AM ALREADY GONE.

Adrian’s hands shook.

Below it:

But there is something I never told you.

He continued reading.

The night I disappeared, I didn’t run away from you.

I ran toward you.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Tears filled them.

I found out who was responsible for everything.

I found out who killed Daniel Vale.

I found out who destroyed your family.

And I found out why they wanted you dead.

Adrian’s heart pounded.

Then he reached the final line.

The person you have been searching for is the person you have trusted your entire life.

Adrian froze.

He read it again.

Then again.

His mother?

His father?

Victor?

Someone else?

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Adrian answered.

Silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

“Adrian.”

His heart stopped.

“Elena?”

“Don’t speak.”

“Where are you?”

“Listen to me.”

“Are you hurt?”

“I’m okay.”

“Who has you?”

“That’s not important.”

“It is to me.”

“Adrian.”

“Tell me where you are.”

“I can’t.”

“Then tell me who took you.”

Silence.

“Elena.”

Her voice became quiet.

“You need to leave the city.”

“No.”

“Adrian.”

“I’m not leaving without you.”

“You have to.”

“Never.”

“Please.”

“I love you.”

Silence.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Then he heard her whisper:

“I love you more than my own life.”

The call ended.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Then a message appeared.

SHE’S LYING TO YOU.

Another.

SHE WAS THE ONE WHO KILLED YOUR FATHER.

Adrian’s hands shook.

Then another message.

COME TO THE HOTEL. ROOM 317.

Adrian knew the hotel.

It belonged to Blackwood.

He grabbed his coat.

Before leaving, he looked at the photograph.

He whispered:

“Elena, I don’t care what you did.”

He touched her face in the picture.

“I will find you.”

The hotel was empty.

Too empty.

Adrian entered Room 317.

The door was unlocked.

Inside was a single chair.

A table.

And a mirror.

On the table was a small black box.

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a ring.

He recognized it.

Elena’s ring.

The one he had given her when they were seventeen.

He had thought it was buried with her.

Adrian picked it up.

His hands trembled.

Then he noticed a photograph beneath it.

Elena.

Standing beside a man.

Adrian stared.

The man was young.

Handsome.

And familiar.

Adrian knew him.

He had seen him in photographs.

He had heard his name.

Daniel Vale.

His father.

But Elena wasn’t just standing beside him.

She was holding his hand.

Adrian’s heart shattered.

A voice came from behind him.

“You finally found it.”

Adrian turned.

Elena stood in the doorway.

Alive.

Beautiful.

Terrified.

Adrian couldn’t speak.

She looked at the photograph.

Then at him.

“You know.”

Adrian’s voice was barely a whisper.

“How long?”

Elena’s face changed.

“How long what?”

“How long were you with my father?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Adrian.”

“Answer me.”

“I wasn’t.”

“Then explain the photograph.”

“I can explain.”

“Then do it.”

She stepped closer.

Adrian stepped back.

“I loved you.”

“You still do.”

“Yes.”

“Then why were you with him?”

“I wasn’t.”

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

“Elena!”

She began crying.

“I was seventeen.”

“So was I.”

“Your father wasn’t your father.”

“What does that mean?”

She looked at him.

“Daniel wasn’t your father.”

Adrian froze.

“Then why is he in the photograph?”

“Because he was mine.”

Silence.

Adrian stared.

“Your father?”

Elena nodded.

“Daniel Vale was my father.”

Adrian couldn’t breathe.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

“He was my father.”

Adrian looked at the photograph.

The world suddenly made sense.

Daniel wasn’t his father.

Daniel was Elena’s.

The man who had disappeared.

The man who had been hunted.

The man who had tried to expose The Circle.

And the man Elena had been protecting.

Adrian looked at her.

“Then who is my father?”

Elena stepped closer.

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

“Then why did everyone say Daniel was my father?”

“Because they wanted you to believe it.”

“Who?”

“The Circle.”

“Why?”

“Because they needed you to believe your father was dead.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Then where is he?”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“He’s alive.”

Adrian froze.

“Who?”

Elena whispered:

“The man who raised you.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

“No.”

“He’s your biological father.”

Adrian stepped backward.

“That’s impossible.”

“He lied.”

“Why?”

“Because he killed Daniel.”

Adrian stared at her.

His entire world collapsed.

Elena stepped forward.

“He killed my father.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“All these years?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you love me?”

Her face broke.

“Because you are not him.”

Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.

“You should have hated me.”

“I tried.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because you looked at me the way he never did.”

Adrian didn’t understand.

Elena whispered:

“Your father saw people as things he could own.”

She stepped closer.

“But you…”

Her voice trembled.

“You loved me as if I were something precious.”

Adrian cried.

“You should have told me.”

“I wanted to.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because the night I was going to tell you…”

She stopped.

Adrian waited.

“…your father killed mine.”

Silence.

Adrian looked at her.

“And you?”

“I saw him.”

“Where?”

“At the lighthouse.”

Adrian froze.

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“You saw him kill Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you tell the police?”

“Because he threatened to kill you.”

Adrian’s heart broke.

“He threatened me?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

Elena looked at him.

“He said if I ever told you the truth…”

Her voice broke.

“…you would die.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

For seven years, he had believed Elena had abandoned him.

For seven years, he had hated the woman he loved.

And all that time, she had been carrying the truth alone.

Adrian opened his eyes.

“Come with me.”

She stared.

“What?”

“Come home.”

“Adrian.”

“Come home.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because they will kill you.”

“Let them try.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

“I’m the last person standing between them and you.”

“What does that mean?”

Elena stepped closer.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

“The Circle doesn’t want you dead.”

Adrian froze.

“Then what do they want?”

She whispered:

“They want you to become their leader.”

Adrian stared.

“What?”

“Your father is the head of The Circle.”

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he try to kill me?”

“Because you refused him.”

“Refused what?”

Elena looked into his eyes.

“Your inheritance.”

Adrian shook his head.

“What inheritance?”

“The Circle.”

Silence.

Elena touched his face.

“Adrian, your father built the organization.”

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“And now he wants you to take his place.”

Adrian stared.

“Never.”

Elena smiled sadly.

“I knew you would say that.”

“Then why are you smiling?”

“Because that’s why I love you.”

Adrian pulled her into his arms.

She cried against him.

“I thought I lost you.”

“I thought I lost you too.”

“Don’t leave me again.”

“I can’t promise.”

“Why?”

“Because there’s something else.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

Elena pulled away.

She took his hand.

And placed it gently against her stomach.

Adrian froze.

His eyes widened.

“Elena.”

She whispered:

“I’m pregnant.”

The world disappeared.

Adrian couldn’t breathe.

“You’re…”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Is it mine?”

Elena smiled through her tears.

“Whose else could it be?”

Adrian laughed.

Then he cried.

He pulled her into his arms.

For the first time in seven years, his heart felt alive.

He held her as if she were the most precious thing in the universe.

“Our baby.”

Elena nodded.

“Our baby.”

Adrian kissed her forehead.

“We’re going home.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I hope so.”

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?”

She looked toward the mirror.

Adrian followed her gaze.

There was something written on the glass.

In red.

Three words.

WELCOME HOME, ADRIAN.

Adrian froze.

The lights went out.

Elena screamed.

A gunshot echoed.

Adrian pulled her to the floor.

Then a voice came through the darkness.

His father’s voice.

“Congratulations, son.”

Adrian’s blood turned cold.

“Your family is finally complete.”

The lights came back.

Elena was gone.

Again.

But this time, there was blood on the floor.

Adrian stared at it.

And beside the blood was a single white rose.

The same flower Elena had carried on the day everyone believed she died.

Adrian picked it up.

His hands trembled.

Then he whispered:

“Elena.”

Somewhere in the darkness, a woman screamed.

And Adrian knew the game had only just begun.
