What Came Home With Us

Chapter 5

What Came Home With Us

THE GIRL WHO LIVED IN THE WALLS · August 13, 2026

For three days, Nora and Adam said nothing about the shadow.

They returned to town before sunrise.

The police asked what had happened.

Nora told them the house had collapsed.

That was all.

There was no evidence of anything supernatural.

No bodies.

No explanation for the strange damage.

And when the police visited the property, they found only a pile of old stones surrounded by trees.

Blackthorn House was gone.

Everyone believed the story was over.

Nora wanted to believe it too.

But on the fourth night, she woke at exactly 2:13 a.m.

She opened her eyes.

Her bedroom was dark.

For a few seconds, everything seemed normal.

Then she heard it.

Knock.

She froze.

Another knock came from inside the wall.

Knock.

Knock.

Nora sat up.

“No.”

She switched on the lamp.

Nothing.

The room was empty.

She looked at the wall.

Perfectly normal.

Then a whisper came from behind it.

“Nora.”

Her blood turned cold.

She jumped out of bed and ran into the hallway.

“Adam!”

His bedroom door opened immediately.

He was already awake.

“I heard it.”

Nora stared at him.

“You heard the knocking?”

He nodded.

“And the voice.”

“What did it say?”

He looked frightened.

“Your name.”

They spent the rest of the night sitting together in the living room.

Neither wanted to return to their bedrooms.

At sunrise, Adam finally spoke.

“We brought something back.”

Nora looked at him.

“The ribbon?”

“No.”

“What then?”

He pointed toward the wall.

“The house.”

Nora shook her head.

“The house was destroyed.”

“Maybe the house wasn’t the building.”

She stared at him.

“What do you mean?”

Adam lowered his voice.

“Maybe it was something else.”

Before Nora could answer, the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the television switched on by itself.

Static filled the screen.

Nora stood.

“Adam…”

A picture appeared.

An old photograph.

Ella.

Standing beside her mother.

Nora stepped closer.

The photograph changed.

Now it showed their aunt Margaret.

Then their parents.

Then Nora and Adam as children.

Nora’s heart stopped.

The final image appeared.

It showed Nora sleeping in her bedroom.

Taken from inside the wall.

She screamed.

The television went black.

Adam unplugged it.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Nora whispered:

“It followed us.”

That afternoon, they went to the town library.

They searched for everything they could find about the Vale family.

Old newspapers.

Property records.

Deaths.

Missing persons.

Eventually, Adam found something.

A newspaper from 1968.

The headline read:

FAMILY DISAPPEARS FROM BLACKTHORN HOUSE

Nora read the article.

A man named Jonathan Vale had disappeared along with his wife and eight-year-old daughter.

But there was something strange.

The newspaper claimed the family had disappeared on October 19.

Nora remembered Ella’s diary.

Her mother had been trapped in the wall.

Ella had been trapped later.

But another article from 1971 caught her attention.

BLACKTHORN HOUSE SOLD TO MARGARET VALE

Nora stared at the page.

“Why would Aunt Margaret buy the house?”

Adam frowned.

“She knew what was inside.”

“Then why go there?”

They searched further.

Another article.

LOCAL WOMAN CLAIMS HOUSE WHISPERS AT NIGHT

Then another.

MARGARET VALE MISSING

The date was twenty-three years earlier.

Nora’s hands began shaking.

“Margaret didn’t die.”

Adam looked at her.

“She disappeared.”

“She became part of the house.”

“But we saw her.”

Nora shook her head.

“No.”

She remembered the hallway.

The photographs.

Margaret’s warning.

“She was never really alive.”

That evening, they returned home.

Nora placed Ella’s ribbon on the table.

She stared at it.

“Maybe we need to find out why it followed us.”

Adam nodded.

“Where do we start?”

Nora looked at the ribbon.

“With her.”

“Ella?”

“Yes.”

Suddenly, the ribbon moved.

Neither of them touched it.

It slowly slid across the table.

Then fell onto the floor.

A trail of red dust appeared beneath it.

The dust moved across the wooden floor.

Toward the hallway.

Nora and Adam followed.

The trail stopped outside Nora’s bedroom.

She looked at the wall.

A small crack had appeared.

Adam whispered:

“That’s new.”

Nora touched it.

The wall was warm.

Then something inside whispered:

“Help me.”

Nora stepped back.

“That isn’t Ella.”

“How do you know?”

“Ella never sounded afraid of us.”

The voice came again.

“Please…”

Adam shook his head.

“Don’t answer.”

Nora nodded.

Then the crack widened.

A small piece of wallpaper fell away.

Behind it was a photograph.

Nora picked it up.

It showed a young woman.

She looked exactly like their mother.

Nora’s breath stopped.

“Mom…”

Adam took the photograph.

On the back was a date.

Two weeks before the accident.

Underneath was a message:

She knew.

They spent hours searching through their mother’s old belongings.

Eventually, Nora found a locked wooden box.

Inside was a letter.

It was addressed to her.

For Nora, if the house ever finds you.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Her mother’s handwriting filled the page.

Nora,

If you are reading this, then I failed to keep the house away from you.

Your father and I discovered the truth years ago.

The house does not belong to our family.

Our family belongs to it.

Every generation, someone is chosen.

The house chooses someone who can hear the voices inside its walls.

That person becomes its next keeper.

I was chosen first.

I escaped.

But escaping was never enough.

Nora’s eyes filled with tears.

She continued reading.

The house follows the bloodline.

If you ever hear your name from inside a wall, do not answer.

If you see the girl, trust her.

And if you see your own reflection smiling when you are not… run.

Nora slowly lowered the letter.

Adam stared at her.

“What?”

She looked toward the mirror.

Her reflection was standing there.

Smiling.

Nora wasn’t.

Adam saw it too.

“Nora…”

The reflection lifted one finger.

It pointed behind them.

They turned.

Nothing.

When they looked back, the reflection was normal.

Nora’s heart pounded.

Then the mirror cracked.

A single line ran from top to bottom.

And a voice whispered:

“Your mother lied.”

The room became freezing cold.

The mirror began fogging.

Words appeared across the glass.

SHE DID NOT ESCAPE.

Nora stepped closer.

“What does that mean?”

Another sentence appeared.

SHE BECAME THE DOOR.

Adam grabbed Nora.

“Don’t go near it.”

But Nora couldn’t move.

The mirror changed.

Instead of their reflections, it showed a dark room.

A woman stood inside.

Nora recognized her immediately.

Their mother.

“Mom?”

The woman looked directly at her.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

She placed her hand against the other side of the glass.

Nora raised hers.

Their palms touched through the mirror.

Tears filled Nora’s eyes.

“Mom…”

Her mother whispered:

“Don’t let him in.”

Nora shook her head.

“Who?”

Her mother looked behind herself.

Fear crossed her face.

Then something tall appeared in the darkness behind her.

The faceless man.

Nora screamed.

The mirror shattered.

Glass exploded across the room.

Adam pulled Nora backward.

The pieces fell to the floor.

But her mother’s voice remained.

“Find the first door.”

Nora looked around.

“What door?”

Her mother’s voice became weaker.

“The one beneath the house.”

Adam frowned.

“The house is gone.”

“No.”

Nora stared at the floor.

“Maybe the house isn’t.”

A deep heartbeat came from beneath them.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

The floor began vibrating.

Then a thin black crack appeared.

It stretched across the room.

Straight toward Nora.

She backed away.

The crack opened.

A staircase appeared beneath the floor.

It led downward.

Far deeper than any basement could possibly be.

Adam stared.

“That wasn’t there before.”

Nora looked at him.

Her mother’s final words echoed in her mind.

Find the first door.

Ella suddenly appeared at the end of the hallway.

She looked frightened.

“Nora.”

Nora turned.

“Ella?”

The girl shook her head.

“You shouldn’t have opened it.”

“What is down there?”

Ella looked toward the staircase.

“The beginning.”

“The beginning of what?”

“The house.”

Nora’s heart raced.

“Can we destroy it?”

Ella shook her head.

“Not anymore.”

“Why?”

Ella’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because the house isn’t chasing you.”

Nora stared at her.

“Then what is it doing?”

Ella whispered:

“It is building itself inside you.”

Silence.

Adam stepped forward.

“What does that mean?”

Ella looked directly at Nora.

“The house is becoming you.”

The staircase beneath them suddenly became darker.

And from somewhere below came Nora’s own voice.

Calling her name.

“Nora…”

She looked down.

A second Nora was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

Smiling.
