Years Without You

Chapter 4

Years Without You

The Love We Left Behind · August 8, 2026

Daniel barely slept that night.

The photograph lay on the table beside him.

Emily and Ethan.

A warning written on the back.

Leave her alone.

He read the words again and again.

By morning, he had made a decision.

He wasn’t going to disappear.

Not this time.

He drove straight to the bookstore.

Emily was unlocking the front door when she saw him.

“You’re early.”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

He handed her the photograph.

Her face went pale.

“Where did you get this?”

“It was under my hotel door.”

Emily stared at it.

Then she closed her eyes.

“It’s my father.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“Why would he do this?”

“Because he thinks he is protecting me.”

“From me?”

“From everything.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emily, you don’t have to face him alone.”

She looked at him with tired eyes.

“I’ve been facing him alone for years.”

“You don’t have to anymore.”

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered,

“That’s what scares me.”

Emily’s father arrived that afternoon.

His name was Richard Carter.

He was a serious man with silver hair and a cold expression.

He walked into the bookstore without greeting anyone.

Emily immediately became tense.

“Dad.”

Richard looked at her.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“So this is him.”

Daniel remained calm.

“I’m Daniel.”

“I know who you are.”

Emily stepped between them.

“Why are you here?”

Richard ignored the question.

“You promised me you would leave him in the past.”

Emily’s voice shook.

“I was eighteen when I made that promise.”

“You gave me your word.”

“And you gave me no choice.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“I did what was necessary.”

“You took my phone.”

“I protected you.”

“You separated me from the person I loved.”

“I saved this family.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“You saved everything except me.”

Silence filled the bookstore.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“You can’t control her anymore.”

Richard turned toward him.

“You know nothing about what happened.”

“Then tell me.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You think this is a love story?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Richard stepped closer.

“She had a sick mother. A family drowning in debt. A child on the way. She had responsibilities.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“A child?”

Emily’s eyes widened.

Richard realized what he had said.

Daniel looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

Richard went silent.

Emily whispered,

“Dad…”

Daniel turned toward her.

“You were pregnant when you left?”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I found out after I left.”

Daniel couldn’t breathe.

“Ethan…”

“He’s your son.”

Everything became silent.

Daniel stared at her.

For seven years, he had imagined all the reasons she might have left.

He had never imagined this.

“You knew?”

Emily nodded.

“I found out three weeks after I moved.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

“Emily…”

“I wrote it in a letter.”

She began crying.

“I wrote that I was pregnant.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

Richard looked away.

Daniel suddenly understood.

“You stopped her letters.”

Richard said nothing.

“You kept my son from me.”

“I protected my daughter.”

“You stole seven years from me.”

Richard’s face remained hard.

“You were a young man with no future.”

“I loved her.”

“Love doesn’t pay debts.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“No. But love doesn’t disappear because life becomes difficult.”

Emily was crying now.

Richard looked at his daughter.

“I thought I was doing the right thing.”

Emily wiped her tears.

“You were doing what you thought was right.”

She took Daniel’s hand.

“But you were wrong.”

Richard looked at their joined hands.

For the first time, his expression softened.

“Emily…”

“I spent seven years believing that I had to choose between my family and Daniel.”

She shook her head.

“I don’t want to choose anymore.”

Richard looked at Daniel.

“And what will you do?”

Daniel answered without hesitation.

“Love her.”

Richard sighed.

“And Ethan?”

Daniel looked toward the reading corner.

The little boy was sitting there with a book.

“I want to be his father.”

Richard was silent.

Then he walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped.

“I don’t know if I can forgive myself.”

Emily looked at him.

“Then start by giving me the freedom you took from me.”

Richard nodded slowly.

“I will.”

He left.

Emily stood quietly.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She looked down.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That you would think I trapped you.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“Emily, I would have married you.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“I would have stayed.”

“You were twenty.”

“I didn’t care.”

She began to cry again.

Daniel gently wiped a tear from her cheek.

“You should have given me the choice.”

“I know.”

“And now?”

Emily looked at him.

“Now I don’t want to lose you.”

“You won’t.”

She stepped closer.

“Promise?”

Daniel held her hand.

“I promise.”

That evening, Daniel sat with Ethan.

They were building the wooden airplane Daniel had brought him.

Ethan looked up.

“Are you going to leave?”

Daniel paused.

“No.”

“Are you going to visit again?”

“Yes.”

“Tomorrow?”

Daniel smiled.

“Yes.”

Ethan smiled too.

Then he asked,

“Why do you look like my mom when you smile?”

Daniel laughed softly.

“I don’t know.”

Ethan thought for a moment.

“Mom smiles differently when you’re here.”

Daniel looked toward Emily.

She was standing behind the counter, watching them.

Their eyes met.

She smiled.

And Daniel finally understood that some homes were not made of walls.

Some homes were people.

Later that night, Emily and Daniel walked beneath the stars.

The town was quiet.

“You know,” Emily said, “I used to come outside every night after you left.”

“What did you do?”

“Looked at the stars.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought you might be looking at the same sky.”

Daniel smiled.

“I was.”

“You didn’t know where I was.”

“No.”

“But you still looked?”

“Every night.”

Emily rested her head against his shoulder.

“I wish we had found each other sooner.”

“So do I.”

“Do you regret coming?”

Daniel turned toward her.

“Never.”

She smiled.

“I regret the years we lost.”

“So do I.”

He took her hand.

“But we can’t get them back.”

“I know.”

“We can only make sure we don’t waste the years ahead.”

Emily looked at him.

“You really mean that?”

“I do.”

She leaned closer.

Their foreheads touched.

For a moment, the world disappeared.

Seven years of pain.

Seven years of waiting.

Seven years of wondering.

All of it seemed smaller than the love standing between them.

Daniel whispered,

“I loved you when you were eighteen.”

Emily smiled through her tears.

“I loved you too.”

“I loved you when I thought you had forgotten me.”

“And I loved you when I thought you had moved on.”

He touched her cheek.

“And now?”

She looked into his eyes.

“Now I love you without being afraid.”

Daniel pulled her gently into his arms.

Emily closed her eyes.

For the first time, she felt safe.

The next morning, Daniel woke to a message from Sophie.

Your firm has been offered the biggest project of your career. Call me immediately.

Daniel smiled.

His life was changing.

But this time, he didn’t want success to cost him love.

He called Sophie.

“I’ll take the project.”

There was a pause.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“It’s in another city.”

Daniel looked toward the bookstore window.

Emily was inside, laughing with Ethan.

“Then I’ll build the project here.”

Sophie laughed.

“You’ve changed.”

Daniel smiled.

“Maybe I finally figured out what matters.”

He ended the call.

Emily walked outside.

“What happened?”

“I got a big project.”

“That’s wonderful.”

“There’s one condition.”

“What?”

“I don’t leave you.”

Emily smiled.

“Then we’ll figure it out.”

Daniel reached for her hand.

They stood together beneath the morning sun.

For the first time, their future didn’t feel like something they had to fear.

It felt like something they could build.

Together.

But across town, Richard Carter sat alone in his house.

On his desk was an old letter.

A letter he had hidden seven years ago.

The envelope was worn.

Daniel’s name was written across it.

Richard stared at it for a long time.

Then he whispered,

“They deserve to know.”

He picked up the phone.

Because there was one final truth about those missing years.

A truth Emily herself didn’t know.

And when Daniel discovered it, he would have to decide whether love was strong enough to forgive the person who had kept them apart.
